The mother didn’t move.
Her hand stayed on the phone, but her attention was fully back on her daughter now.
“What did he take?” she asked again, slower this time.
The girl’s breathing turned uneven.
“He… he said it was just to scare you,” she whispered. “But then he took it anyway.”
A pause.
Then, barely audible:
“The black case… from your office.”
The mother’s expression tightened.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
The room seemed to lose temperature.
“That case,” she said quietly.
The girl nodded, tears forming again. “He said it proves everything.”
The mother slowly lowered the phone from her ear.
The line was still connected.
But she didn’t care anymore.
Because now this wasn’t just an attack.
