CHAPTER 5: THE GIRL FROM THE FORGOTTEN FAMILY

CHAPTER 5: THE GIRL FROM THE FORGOTTEN FAMILY

The name had disappeared from every record.

Every newspaper article.

Every business archive.

Every family history document.

But Daniel Anderson found it.

Hidden beneath layers of forgotten files.

A name that should have been erased forever.

The Carter Family.

Daniel sat alone in his office long after midnight.

The city lights outside his window reflected against the glass.

Usually, this was the hour when he made decisions.

When he reviewed contracts.

When he negotiated deals.

When he controlled problems before they became disasters.

But tonight was different.

Because for the first time

he was not dealing with a business problem.

He was dealing with a family secret.

On his desk were three things.

The hidden memory card.

The old photograph of a young Emily beside his mother.

And a file containing one name.

Emily Carter.

A woman everyone believed was a simple housekeeper.

But every piece of evidence suggested something else.

Daniel opened the old records again.

Twenty years earlier, the Carter family was one of the most respected families in the country.

Not as famous as the Andersons.

Not as wealthy.

But powerful in a different way.

They built their reputation on honesty.

Integrity.

Trust.

Three things that wealthy families often claimed to have.

But rarely possessed.

The Carter Group was known for its technology research division.

A company that created security systems, encryption technology, and advanced data protection.

Technology that could protect information from almost anyone.

Including powerful people.

And that was where the problem began.

Fifteen years ago, the Carter Group collapsed overnight.

Not slowly.

Not because of bad investments.

Not because of poor management.

It simply disappeared.

The founder, Thomas Carter, was accused of financial crimes.

The company was investigated.

Assets were frozen.

Employees lost their jobs.

The Carter name became a symbol of failure.

Then Thomas Carter vanished.

Officially

he ran away.

But Daniel noticed something.

There was no proof.

No confirmed location.

No body.

No final message.

Just a story everyone accepted.

And Daniel had learned something from years in business.

The easiest stories to believe were often the ones someone wanted you to believe.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Daniel asked.

Emily sat across from him.

The office was quiet.

She had finally agreed to talk.

Not because she trusted him completely.

Because she was tired of carrying the truth alone.

"Tell you what?"

"Who you are."

Emily looked down.

"I am Emily Carter."

Daniel stared.

"But that name disappeared."

A faint smile crossed her face.

"That was the point."

Emily remembered the night her life changed.

She was twelve years old.

Young enough to believe adults always knew what they were doing.

Old enough to remember every painful detail.

Her family lived in a beautiful house.

Not a mansion like the Anderson estate.

But a home filled with warmth.

Her father worked late nights.

Her mother cooked every Sunday.

They were not perfect.

But they were happy.

Until the night strangers arrived.

Emily remembered waking up to voices downstairs.

Angry voices.

Her father shouting.

Her mother crying.

She remembered hiding behind the staircase.

Watching people search through her father's office.

Taking documents.

Taking computers.

Taking everything.

Then she saw someone.

A man standing calmly in the doorway.

A man who did not look like an investigator.

He looked like someone giving orders.

She never forgot his face.

"Who was he?"

Daniel asked.

Emily hesitated.

Then answered.

"I don't know his name."

A pause.

"But my mother knew."

Daniel leaned forward.

"What did she tell you?"

Emily looked at the memory card.

"She said there were people who would destroy everything to keep one file hidden."

"The file inside the necklace?"

Emily nodded.

"My father discovered something."

"What?"

"I don't know."

Her voice became quieter.

"That is why my mother spent years trying to find it."

Daniel studied her.

"So you came here because of the necklace."

Emily didn't answer immediately.

Then:

"Yes."

The honesty surprised him.

"I wasn't hired because I needed a job."

A pause.

"I needed access."

Daniel's expression changed.

"You lied to get into this house."

Emily looked at him.

"Yes."

The admission hurt more than he expected.

Because after everything

he wanted to believe she had been completely honest.

"But I never planned to hurt anyone."

Emily continued.

"I cleaned rooms because it allowed me to see things."

"I learned schedules."

"I learned who visited."

"I learned what people were hiding."

Daniel stood.

"You used my home to investigate my family."

Emily looked at him.

"I used your home because my mother's last words were connected to your family."

Silence.

Daniel wanted to be angry.

He had every reason.

But then he remembered something.

The night she was accused.

The entire mansion judged her without knowing her.

And he realized

he had almost done the same thing.

"Why didn't you tell me the truth after I proved you innocent?"

Emily looked away.

"Because I didn't know if you were different from them."

The answer hit him.

Different from them.

His family.

The people who had destroyed hers.

Later that night, Daniel accessed the memory card.

The screen opened.

A single encrypted file appeared.

No name.

No description.

Only one date.

October 14 — Fifteen Years Ago

Daniel's heart stopped.

Because he knew that date.

The date his father announced the biggest business expansion in Anderson history.

The date his family celebrated their greatest success.

The same date the Carter Group collapsed.

He opened the file.

A password screen appeared.

"Any ideas?"

Daniel asked.

Emily stared at it.

Then slowly whispered:

"My father used only one password for important things."

"What?"

She looked at him.

"The name of the person he trusted most."

Daniel waited.

Emily typed.

One word.

LUCAS

The screen unlocked.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then a video appeared.

A man sitting in a dark room.

Older.

Tired.

Afraid.

But Daniel recognized him immediately.

Thomas Carter.

Emily's missing father.

The video began.

"To whoever finds this..."

Thomas looked directly into the camera.

"If you are watching this, it means they failed to stop the truth."

He paused.

"The Anderson family will tell you I was a criminal."

His expression became painful.

"They are lying."

Daniel felt his blood run cold.

Thomas continued:

"The collapse of Carter Group was not an accident."

"It was planned."

Emily covered her mouth.

"And the person responsible..."

Thomas looked down.

Then said the words that changed everything.

"Was someone inside the Anderson family."

The video stopped.

The room became silent.

Daniel looked at Emily.

Emily looked back.

Neither of them spoke.

Because the truth they had been searching for

was no longer hidden.

It was waiting.

May you like

And it was much more dangerous than either of them expected.
