CHAPTER 7: THE ENEMY INSIDE THE MANSION

CHAPTER 7: THE ENEMY INSIDE THE MANSION

The Anderson mansion had always been designed to impress people.

The enormous entrance.

The crystal chandeliers.

The priceless paintings.

The perfectly maintained gardens.

Every detail existed for one purpose.

To show the world that the Anderson family was untouchable.

But Daniel Anderson finally understood something.

The most dangerous things inside a mansion were never the locked doors.

They were the people who had keys.

The underground archive was located beneath the eastern wing of the mansion.

A place almost nobody knew existed.

Not even most employees.

The official explanation was simple.

The room had been closed after a renovation fifteen years ago.

Nothing important was stored there.

Just old documents.

Old furniture.

Old memories.

But Daniel had stopped believing simple explanations.

Not after everything he discovered.

He walked beside Emily through the dark hallway beneath the mansion.

Their footsteps echoed against the stone floor.

Neither of them spoke.

Because both understood something.

They were not just searching for answers.

They were searching for something someone had tried very hard to erase.

"You don't have to come with me."

Daniel said.

Emily looked at him.

"You know that isn't true."

A pause.

"This started because of my family."

Emily lowered her eyes.

"It started because someone wanted the truth hidden."

Daniel looked at her.

"And you think that person is still here."

Emily nodded.

"Yes."

The words followed them down the hallway.

Because they both knew the same thing.

Whoever destroyed the Carter family fifteen years ago

might still be living under the Anderson name.

The archive door was at the end of the corridor.

A massive steel door covered in dust.

Daniel entered the security code.

Nothing happened.

He tried again.

Still nothing.

Emily stepped forward.

"Move."

Daniel looked at her.

She reached toward the old keypad.

Then typed six numbers.

The door unlocked.

Daniel stared.

"How did you know that?"

Emily hesitated.

"My father used it."

"For what?"

She looked at the door.

"To protect things he didn't trust anyone else with."

The door opened slowly.

Cold air escaped.

The room smelled like old paper and forgotten years.

Inside were hundreds of files.

Boxes.

Documents.

Photographs.

Everything someone had hidden away.

Daniel walked deeper.

Then stopped.

Because on the first shelf was a label.

CARTER INVESTIGATION

Emily froze.

She touched the box carefully.

Almost afraid.

"This is it."

Daniel opened it.

Inside were documents.

Financial records.

Emails.

Meeting notes.

And one folder marked:

FINAL AGREEMENT

Daniel opened it.

The first page made his face change.

Because it contained signatures.

Thomas Carter.

And Richard Anderson.

Daniel's father.

Emily saw his expression.

"What?"

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

He kept reading.

The document was a partnership agreement.

Between Carter Group and Anderson Industries.

But it wasn't a normal business agreement.

It was a transfer.

A transfer of technology ownership.

Daniel frowned.

"My father bought Carter Group?"

Emily shook her head.

"No."

She pointed at the document.

"He stole it."

Silence.

Daniel continued reading.

The agreement showed something impossible.

Richard Anderson had promised to protect Thomas Carter's research.

Instead, weeks later, the Carter Group collapsed.

And Anderson Industries released a similar technology.

Technology that made them billions.

Daniel stepped back.

"No."

Emily looked at him.

"You don't want to believe it."

Daniel's voice became quiet.

"Because if this is true..."

A pause.

"My entire family's success was built on this."

Before Emily could answer

A sound came from outside.

A door closing.

Both froze.

Someone was there.

Daniel immediately turned off the lights.

They stood silently in the darkness.

Footsteps approached.

Slow.

Careful.

Someone knew exactly where they were.

The footsteps stopped outside the archive.

A hand touched the door.

Daniel reached for his phone.

But before he could call anyone

the person outside spoke.

"Emily."

Her blood went cold.

Because she recognized the voice.

Vanessa.

Daniel looked confused.

Why would Vanessa be there?

The door opened.

Vanessa stepped inside.

Her expression was different.

No arrogance.

No perfect smile.

Only exhaustion.

"You shouldn't have found this."

Daniel stared at her.

"You knew this room existed."

Vanessa said nothing.

"You knew about the documents."

Another silence.

"How long have you known?"

Vanessa looked at the files.

"Since I was a child."

Emily stepped forward.

"Then you knew my father was innocent."

Vanessa looked at her.

And for the first time

she looked ashamed.

"Yes."

The answer hit Emily harder than any accusation.

"You knew?"

Her voice trembled.

"You knew what happened to my family?"

Vanessa looked away.

"I knew something was wrong."

"That is not an answer."

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"My father told me never to ask questions."

Daniel's expression changed.

"Your father?"

Vanessa nodded.

"Richard Anderson."

The room became silent.

"My father wasn't the only one involved."

Vanessa whispered.

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

"Who else?"

Vanessa looked directly at him.

"Your mother."

The words destroyed the last piece of Daniel's certainty.

His mother.

The woman who taught him kindness.

The woman he trusted more than anyone.

"No."

Daniel whispered.

Vanessa stepped closer.

"You still want to believe the lie."

"Because the truth is too painful."

Emily looked at Vanessa.

"Why did you frame me?"

Vanessa's face changed.

And Daniel saw something he never expected.

Regret.

"Because I was trying to scare you away."

Emily stared.

"You tried to destroy my life."

"I know."

Vanessa's voice broke.

"I know."

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then the lights suddenly turned off.

The entire archive went dark.

A second later

a loud crash echoed from the hallway.

Someone had forced the door shut.

Daniel rushed forward.

Locked.

They were trapped.

Emily looked at him.

"Someone knew we were here."

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

The fear in her eyes confirmed it.

This was not about old documents anymore.

Someone inside the mansion was actively protecting the secret.

Someone who knew the archive.

Someone who knew their location.

Someone who was willing to trap them to keep the truth buried.

Daniel stared into the darkness.

For years, he believed enemies came from outside.

Business rivals.

Competitors.

Strangers.

But he was wrong.

The greatest threat had always been inside his own walls.

May you like

And now the enemy knew they had found the truth.
