CHAPTER 9: THE PRICE OF THE TRUTH

CHAPTER 9: THE PRICE OF THE TRUTH
The message remained on Daniel Anderson's phone.
Six words.
Six words that changed everything.
STOP SEARCHING, OR EMILY CARTER WILL DISAPPEAR.
Daniel had received threats before.
From competitors.
From angry investors.
From people who lost everything because of decisions he made.
He understood threats.
He knew how to handle enemies.
But this was different.
Because the person behind the message knew exactly where to hurt him.
They did not threaten his company.
They did not threaten his money.
They threatened the one person who had spent years searching for a truth his family buried.
Emily.
"Daniel?"
Emily's voice pulled him back.
She stood in the hallway watching him carefully.
She already knew something was wrong.
"What happened?"
Daniel locked his phone.
"Nothing."
Emily stared at him.
She had spent three years studying people inside the Anderson mansion.
She knew when someone was lying.
Especially now.
"Don't do that."
Daniel frowned.
"Do what?"
"Protect me by hiding things."
The words surprised him.
Because they sounded exactly like something he would have said to someone else.
"I received a message."
Daniel finally admitted.
Emily's expression changed.
"From who?"
"I don't know."
"What did it say?"
Daniel hesitated.
Then showed her.
Emily read the message.
Her face became completely still.
Too still.
Daniel noticed.
"Emily."
She looked up.
"He's scared."
"Who?"
"The person who sent this."
Daniel looked confused.
"How does threatening you mean he's scared?"
Emily looked at the phone again.
"Because fifteen years ago, they thought the truth was gone."
A pause.
"They thought nobody would ever find it."
She handed the phone back.
"Now they know someone did."
Daniel understood.
The threat was not confidence.
It was panic.
Someone was afraid.
But fear could make dangerous people even more dangerous.
That evening, Daniel called an emergency meeting.
Not with executives.
Not with lawyers.
With security.
The entire mansion was placed under surveillance.
Every entrance.
Every hallway.
Every employee.
Nobody entered.
Nobody left.
Vanessa watched from the corner.
"You think this will protect her?"
Daniel turned.
"Protect who?"
"Emily."
The way Vanessa said her name bothered him.
Not with hatred.
With concern.
"You actually care what happens to her."
Daniel said.
Vanessa looked away.
"I should have cared sooner."
The answer surprised him.
For years, Vanessa had been the person everyone feared.
The person who controlled rooms with a smile.
But now Daniel saw something else.
A woman who had spent years living with a secret.
A woman who knew the truth and was too afraid to speak.
"Why did you frame her?"
Daniel asked.
Vanessa remained silent.
"I want the real answer."
Finally, Vanessa spoke.
"Because I knew someone was watching her."
Daniel froze.
"What?"
"When Emily started searching, I noticed."
"Someone else noticed too."
"Who?"
Vanessa looked toward the window.
"The person who destroyed her family."
Daniel stepped closer.
"You knew someone was following her?"
Vanessa nodded.
"Yes."
"Then why make her look guilty?"
Vanessa's eyes filled with regret.
"Because I thought if everyone hated her..."
A pause.
"Nobody would think she mattered."
Daniel stared at her.
It was a terrible plan.
A cruel plan.
But for the first time, he understood the reason behind it.
Vanessa was not trying to destroy Emily.
She was trying to hide her.
UnfortunatelyâŠ
she had almost destroyed her in the process.
Later that night, Emily returned to the room where she had been staying.
She expected Daniel to follow.
He didn't.
Instead, he stood alone in the hallway.
Thinking.
He had spent his whole life protecting the Anderson name.
The family reputation.
The legacy.
But now he had to make a choice.
Protect the familyâŠ
or protect the truth.
And he finally understood why his father had been so powerful.
Because powerful people were not afraid of lies.
They were afraid of losing control over the story.
At midnight, Daniel received another message.
This time, it contained a photograph.
His hands tightened around the phone.
The image showed Emily.
Taken from outside the mansion.
Only hours earlier.
Someone had been watching them.
Inside the estate.
Close enough to take pictures.
Below the image was another message.
YOU HAVE UNTIL MORNING.
Daniel immediately called security.
"Find the person who took this."
The security chief hesitated.
"Sir..."
"What?"
"The camera footage."
Daniel's expression changed.
"What about it?"
"Someone deleted three hours of recordings."
Silence.
Only someone with access could do that.
Someone inside the mansion.
Daniel looked toward the hallway.
Toward the rooms.
Toward the people who had lived beside him for years.
The enemy was not only inside the family.
The enemy was inside the house.
The next morning, Daniel gathered everyone.
Staff.
Security.
Family members.
Everyone stood in the grand hall.
The same place where Emily had once been judged.
The same place where Vanessa's lie had almost destroyed her.
Daniel walked to the center.
His expression was cold.
"Someone inside this mansion has been hiding the truth for fifteen years."
Nobody moved.
"Someone inside this mansion tried to silence Emily."
Whispers spread.
"And before today ends..."
Daniel looked at every person in the room.
"I will find out who."
Then the doors opened.
A man entered.
Older.
Calm.
Confident.
Daniel's blood turned cold.
Because he knew him.
Everyone knew him.
The man who had helped build the Anderson empire.
The man who disappeared after Richard Anderson died.
His father's closest advisor.
Victor Hale.
Victor smiled.
"Daniel."
A pause.
"I heard you were looking for answers."
Daniel stared.
"How did you get inside?"
Victor looked around the mansion.
Then smiled.
"Because, Daniel..."
"I never left."
The entire room went silent.
And Daniel finally understood.
The person controlling everything was not someone who entered the mansion.
May you like
It was someone who had been living there all along.
