Chapter 10 — The Boardroom Betrayal

Chapter 10 — The Boardroom Betrayal

The message from Daniel remained on Charlotte's screen.

We need to talk before Marcus finds out I'm alive.

Charlotte read it three times.

Then she looked at Adrian.

"He's alive."

Adrian nodded.

"And he's my brother."

"Apparently."

"Do you know where he is?"

Adrian checked the security system.

"He's inside Solmere."

Charlotte stood.

"Then we're going there."

Adrian caught her arm.

"No."

She turned.

"You keep telling me not to do things."

"Because every time you do, someone tries to kill you."

"My brother just told me Marcus doesn't know he's alive."

"Exactly."

"Which means Daniel has been hiding from Marcus."

"Yes."

"And now he's exposed."

Adrian's expression hardened.

"Which means Marcus will come for him."

Charlotte grabbed her coat.

"Then we'd better get there first."

Solmere Hotel was strangely quiet.

Too quiet.

Charlotte entered through the underground parking garage.

Adrian followed.

No security guards.

No employees.

No cameras.

Charlotte looked up.

"Where is everyone?"

"Evacuated."

"By whom?"

Adrian checked his phone.

"Daniel."

They entered the service elevator.

The doors closed.

Charlotte stared at the floor indicator.

"Seventh floor."

"Yes."

"That's where the boardroom is."

Adrian nodded.

"Why would Daniel go there?"

Charlotte's phone vibrated.

Another message.

BOARDROOM. COME ALONE.

She showed Adrian.

He immediately shook his head.

"You're not going alone."

Charlotte looked at him.

"He said alone."

"He doesn't get to give me orders."

The elevator stopped.

The doors opened.

The corridor was dark.

Charlotte stepped out.

"Daniel?"

No answer.

She walked toward the boardroom.

The doors were open.

Inside, every light was on.

Someone was sitting at the head of the table.

Charlotte stopped.

Daniel looked up.

For the first time, she saw him without his security uniform.

He was wearing a dark suit.

He looked older.

More serious.

And strangely familiar.

Charlotte slowly entered.

"You're my brother."

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because you weren't ready."

"That's what everyone says."

Daniel looked down.

"I'm sorry."

"Sorry isn't enough."

"I know."

Charlotte stared at him.

"Who is our mother?"

"Elena."

"I know."

Daniel looked surprised.

"She told you?"

"Yes."

"And Victoria?"

"She raised us."

Daniel's eyes filled with emotion.

"She raised you."

Charlotte frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel hesitated.

"I wasn't raised by Victoria."

"Who raised you?"

"Marcus."

Charlotte's blood turned cold.

Daniel explained.

After Charlotte was taken away from the hospital, Marcus discovered there had been another child.

Daniel.

He was Charlotte's twin brother.

Marcus couldn't find Charlotte.

So he kept Daniel.

Raised him.

Educated him.

Trained him.

And eventually placed him inside Solmere.

"He made me believe Victoria abandoned us."

Charlotte stared.

"And you believed him?"

"For years."

"When did you learn the truth?"

"When I was twenty-one."

"Why didn't you leave?"

"Because Marcus threatened Elena."

Charlotte's heart tightened.

"Where is she?"

"I don't know."

"What do you mean?"

"Marcus moves her every few months."

Charlotte sat down.

"Then why did he let you work here?"

"Because he thought I belonged to him."

"And you didn't?"

Daniel shook his head.

"I've been gathering evidence against him for eight years."

Charlotte looked around the boardroom.

"That's why you helped me."

"Yes."

"The footage."

"I recovered it."

"The files."

"I found them."

"The security cameras."

"I gave you access."

Charlotte stared at him.

"You've been helping me from the beginning."

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

"Then why did you tell me to come alone?"

"Because there's something you need to know."

"What?"

Daniel opened a folder.

Inside was a list of names.

Every member of the Solmere board.

Next to each name was a number.

Charlotte looked closer.

Payments.

Millions.

Her eyes widened.

"The board."

Daniel nodded.

"They're all compromised."

"Everyone?"

"Almost."

Charlotte scanned the names.

Then stopped.

One name was circled.

Adrian Cross.

She looked up.

"Adrian."

Daniel's expression changed.

"He has been taking money from Marcus for eleven years."

Charlotte's heart sank.

"No."

"I have bank records."

"He's been protecting me."

"Sometimes."

"Sometimes?"

"Because Marcus ordered him to."

Charlotte stared at the page.

"You're lying."

Daniel pushed the documents toward her.

"Look."

She did.

Transfers.

Shell companies.

Offshore accounts.

Repeated payments.

One payment was made the night Victoria died.

Charlotte's hands began trembling.

"How much?"

"Two million."

"For what?"

Daniel looked at her.

"Your mother's location."

Charlotte couldn't breathe.

Adrian had sold her mother's location.

The night she died.

The boardroom doors suddenly opened.

Adrian walked in.

Charlotte turned.

His eyes moved from her to Daniel.

Then to the documents.

He stopped.

"Charlotte."

She stood.

"You took money from Marcus."

Adrian's face went pale.

"Listen to me."

"You sold my mother's location."

"No."

"Two million dollars."

"I didn't know what he was going to do."

"You knew."

Adrian stepped closer.

"I thought he wanted to negotiate."

"You thought?"

"I was trying to save your family."

"By selling them?"

Adrian closed his eyes.

"Yes."

Charlotte stared at him.

He looked broken.

"I was wrong."

"That's not enough."

"I know."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Tell her the rest."

Adrian looked at him.

"What do you want?"

"The truth."

Adrian laughed bitterly.

"The truth?"

He looked at Charlotte.

"The board has been controlled by Marcus for years."

"Why?"

"Because your grandfather's trust was worth more than anyone understood."

Daniel interrupted.

"Tell her about the vote."

Charlotte frowned.

"What vote?"

Adrian didn't answer.

Daniel opened another file.

"Tomorrow morning, the board is voting to remove Charlotte as controlling heir."

Charlotte stared.

"They can't."

"They can if they prove you're not legally a Vale."

Daniel pointed at the documents.

"And they have enough forged evidence to do it."

Charlotte's stomach tightened.

"Who organized it?"

Adrian looked at her.

"Marcus."

The boardroom doors opened again.

This time, six directors entered.

Charlotte recognized all of them.

They looked uncomfortable.

One of them spoke.

"Miss Vale."

Charlotte turned.

"What?"

"We need you to leave the building."

"Why?"

"Your authority over Solmere is currently disputed."

"By whom?"

The director hesitated.

"The board."

Charlotte laughed.

"The board?"

"Yes."

Daniel stepped forward.

"You know she's the beneficiary."

"We know."

"Then you know the trust activates in ninety days."

"We also know she may not be legally entitled to it."

Charlotte stared.

"So that's the plan."

"What plan?"

"Erase me again."

No one answered.

Charlotte looked around the table.

"You tried once."

"Now you're trying again."

The oldest director finally spoke.

"Charlotte, this isn't personal."

"It became personal when you forged my birth records."

Silence.

Daniel placed a folder on the table.

"I have copies."

The director's face changed.

"You don't understand what you're doing."

"I understand perfectly."

Daniel opened the folder.

"You all took money from Marcus."

One director stepped backward.

"That's impossible."

"Your offshore accounts say otherwise."

Another director whispered:

"Where did you get those?"

"From the system you thought you controlled."

Daniel looked at Charlotte.

"There's more."

He opened another file.

"Every board member signed a document transferring voting rights to Marcus."

Charlotte stared.

"So Marcus already controls the board."

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

Then one of the directors suddenly pulled out a gun.

Everything happened at once.

Adrian tackled Charlotte to the floor.

The gun fired.

The bullet struck the ceiling.

Daniel rushed forward.

Security guards stormed the room.

The director tried to run.

He was tackled.

Charlotte remained on the floor, breathing hard.

Adrian pulled her upright.

"Are you hurt?"

She pushed him away.

"Don't touch me."

His face fell.

Daniel looked at the captured director.

"Who sent you?"

The man laughed.

"You think this changes anything?"

Daniel grabbed the gun.

"Who sent you?"

The director smiled.

"You're already too late."

"Why?"

"Because Marcus has the trust."

Charlotte froze.

"What?"

The director looked at her.

"Your precious billion-dollar trust."

He smiled.

"It's already been transferred."

Charlotte's face went white.

"Transferred to whom?"

The director laughed.

"To the only person legally capable of receiving it."

"Who?"

He looked toward the door.

Then said:

"Daniel."

Charlotte turned.

Daniel froze.

"What?"

The director continued:

"Marcus found a way to make Daniel the primary beneficiary."

Charlotte stared at her brother.

"Is that true?"

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

The director smiled.

"Check the trust."

Daniel immediately opened the secure database.

His face changed.

Charlotte walked toward him.

"What do you see?"

He didn't answer.

She looked at the screen.

The beneficiary field had changed.

PRIMARY BENEFICIARY: DANIEL MARLOWE

SECONDARY BENEFICIARY: CHARLOTTE MARLOWE

Charlotte stared.

"How?"

Daniel looked horrified.

"I didn't do this."

"Then who did?"

Adrian answered quietly:

"Marcus."

Charlotte looked at him.

"How?"

"Identity manipulation."

Daniel shook his head.

"He must have obtained my original records."

Charlotte understood.

Daniel had spent his life hiding from Marcus.

Marcus had spent his life collecting Daniel's identity.

Now he had used it to attack the trust.

The board director laughed.

"Once Daniel signs the transfer documents, Marcus controls everything."

Daniel looked at Charlotte.

"I won't sign."

"You don't have to."

Everyone turned.

A voice came from the doorway.

Calm.

Cold.

Familiar.

Marcus.

He walked into the boardroom.

No guards stopped him.

No one questioned him.

He simply entered as though the building belonged to him.

Charlotte stared.

"You."

Marcus smiled.

"Hello, Charlotte."

Daniel stepped in front of her.

"Stay away from her."

Marcus looked at him.

"My son."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"I'm not your son."

Marcus smiled.

"That's where you're wrong."

He looked at Charlotte.

"Neither of you understands what your mother did."

Charlotte's voice was cold.

"She protected us."

"She stole you from me."

"You kidnapped Daniel."

"I raised him."

"You manipulated him."

"I educated him."

"You destroyed our family."

Marcus laughed.

"Your family destroyed itself."

He walked toward the table.

Then placed a document in front of Charlotte.

"Your mother signed this."

Charlotte looked down.

It was Victoria's signature.

Below it:

TRANSFER OF PARENTAL RIGHTS

Charlotte's hands shook.

"What is this?"

Marcus smiled.

"Proof that your mother willingly gave you to me."

Charlotte stared at the document.

"No."

"Read it."

She did.

The signature looked real.

The date was correct.

Everything appeared legitimate.

Daniel whispered:

"It's fake."

Marcus looked at him.

"You always were the sentimental one."

Charlotte looked up.

"Why would you want the trust?"

Marcus leaned closer.

"Because the trust isn't four billion dollars."

Charlotte frowned.

"Then what is it?"

Marcus smiled.

"Forty-seven billion."

The room went silent.

Charlotte stared at him.

"That's impossible."

"No."

Marcus tapped the document.

"Your grandfather hid the real Blackwell fortune inside the trust."

"The hotels are only the surface."

"The trust owns the debt."

"The patents."

"The land."

"The controlling shares."

"Forty-seven billion dollars."

Charlotte felt dizzy.

Marcus leaned close.

"And in ninety days, it all becomes yours."

He smiled.

"Unless you're legally declared someone else."

Charlotte finally understood.

This entire conspiracy wasn't about four billion.

It wasn't even about Solmere.

It was about controlling the largest hidden financial empire in the country.

And Marcus had spent twenty-nine years preparing for one moment.

Her thirtieth birthday.

The day the trust became active.

Marcus turned toward the board.

"Tomorrow morning, the vote begins."

Then he looked at Charlotte.

"And by tomorrow night..."

He smiled.

"...you won't be Charlotte Vale anymore."

He walked out.

The doors closed behind him.

Charlotte looked at Daniel.

Then Adrian.

Then the documents scattered across the table.

Her voice was barely audible.

"He plans to erase me again."

Daniel nodded.

"But this time..."

Charlotte picked up the forged document.

"...he won't get the chance."

Her eyes hardened.

"Because we're going to expose him first."

Daniel looked at her.

"How?"

Charlotte stared at the security footage still playing on the screen.

Then she noticed something.

A timestamp.

11:47 P.M.

The exact minute her mother had called Adrian.

Charlotte's eyes widened.

"Wait."

She rewound the footage.

A figure entered Victoria's house.

She paused it.

Zoomed in.

The figure turned toward the camera.

Charlotte stared.

It wasn't Marcus.

It wasn't Gabriel.

It wasn't Theodore.

It wasn't Adrian.

It was someone else.

Someone Charlotte knew.

Someone who had been standing beside her mother during the final minutes of her life.

Charlotte whispered:

"Grandmother."

Daniel looked at her.

"What?"

Charlotte pointed at the screen.

"Margaret wasn't just there."

She zoomed in further.

Margaret was holding something.

A small black key.

The same key Charlotte had been carrying.

Daniel's face changed.

"That's impossible."

Charlotte shook her head.

"No."

She looked at the timestamp.

Then at the key.

Then at the photograph of Victoria.

Suddenly, everything connected.

"The trust wasn't hidden from Marcus."

Daniel frowned.

"Then where was it hidden?"

Charlotte looked at him.

"Inside someone."

Daniel stared.

"What?"

Charlotte touched the black key.

"My mother didn't hide the trust."

"She hid the access."

"And she gave it to someone Marcus would never suspect."

Daniel whispered:

"Who?"

Charlotte looked at the security footage.

At Margaret.

And finally understood why her grandmother had been terrified.

"Me."

The room fell silent.

Charlotte smiled for the first time in days.

Because for the first time—

May you like

she wasn't running from the conspiracy.

She was finally ready to destroy it.
