Chapter 13 — The Truth About My Mother's Death

Chapter 13 — The Truth About My Mother's Death

The floor moved beneath us.

Not a tremor.

Not an earthquake.

Something mechanical.

Something enormous was shifting underneath the vault.

Daniel grabbed my arm.

"Move!"

"Where?"

"Anywhere away from the center!"

Elena pulled me toward the wall.

A deep metallic groan echoed through the room.

Then the floor split open.

A circular platform descended into darkness.

Cold air rushed upward.

I stared into the opening.

Beneath the vault was another chamber.

A chamber no one had mentioned.

No one had even known existed.

Daniel whispered:

"There's another level."

Elena closed her eyes.

"Your grandfather built it."

"Alexander?"

She nodded.

"Before he disappeared."

I looked into the darkness.

"Then that's where the truth is."

Daniel shook his head.

"Charlotte, we don't know what's down there."

I looked at the screen where Richard Blackwell's face had disappeared.

"We know exactly what's down there."

I stepped onto the platform.

"The truth."

The Room Beneath the Room

The platform carried us downward.

Twenty feet.

Forty.

Sixty.

The walls were made from thick steel.

No windows.

No doors.

Only cables and old ventilation pipes.

The deeper we went, the colder it became.

Finally, the platform stopped.

A door opened.

We entered.

The chamber was enormous.

And in the center stood a glass case.

Inside was a single object.

A wedding ring.

My mother's wedding ring.

I stared at it.

"Why is that here?"

Elena began crying.

"Because your mother left it for you."

I walked toward the case.

There was a small screen beneath it.

A message appeared.

PLAY RECORDING?

I pressed yes.

Static.

Then Victoria's face appeared.

She looked older than in the previous recording.

Tired.

Frightened.

But alive.

The date on the recording was twenty-nine years earlier.

The night before she died.

I stopped breathing.

Victoria looked directly at the camera.

"Charlotte."

I covered my mouth.

"If you're seeing this, then I didn't survive."

My eyes filled with tears.

"But you deserve to know what happened."

She paused.

Then said the words that destroyed everything I thought I knew.

"I wasn't killed by Marcus."

I looked at Elena.

She lowered her eyes.

Victoria continued.

"I wasn't killed by Thomas."

"I wasn't killed by Gabriel."

"And I wasn't killed by Elena."

"Your mother's death was caused by someone I trusted."

The screen flickered.

Then Victoria said:

"Margaret."

I froze.

"My grandmother?"

Victoria nodded.

"Your grandmother betrayed me."

Elena whispered:

"No..."

Victoria continued.

"But not because she wanted money."

"Because she believed she was saving you."

I stared at the screen.

"What did she do?"

The recording continued.

"Margaret discovered that Richard Blackwell had found you."

"She knew he wanted the trust."

"She knew he would kill you to get it."

"She came to me."

Victoria took a breath.

"She offered a deal."

My heart pounded.

"She would give Richard the identity of one child."

"In exchange, he would leave the other alive."

I whispered:

"No."

Victoria looked heartbroken.

"Margaret chose you."

I felt dizzy.

"She gave him Daniel."

Daniel froze.

"What?"

Victoria continued.

"Margaret believed Richard would take Daniel and leave Charlotte alone."

"But Richard broke the agreement."

"He took Daniel."

"And he came for you."

Daniel stared at the screen.

His face had gone completely blank.

"I was the child she gave him."

Elena nodded through tears.

"Yes."

Daniel stepped backward.

"She sacrificed me."

"She thought she was saving you both," Elena said.

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"She didn't save anyone."

Victoria continued.

"Margaret realized her mistake too late."

"She tried to undo the deal."

"Richard demanded the trust."

"I refused."

"So he threatened Charlotte."

Victoria looked down.

"I knew I couldn't fight him alone."

"That's when I asked Elena for help."

The screen changed.

A photograph appeared.

Elena holding two babies.

Charlotte.

Daniel.

Victoria's voice continued.

"We created a plan."

"Elena would take Charlotte."

"Daniel would remain hidden."

"Gabriel would pretend to abandon the family."

"And I would disappear."

I stared.

"Disappear?"

Victoria nodded.

"Yes."

"The world needed to believe I was dead."

"Because Richard was searching for me."

"If he found me, he would find Charlotte."

I shook my head.

"So my mother wasn't murdered?"

Elena whispered:

"Not then."

The recording continued.

"On the night everyone believes I died, Richard found me."

"He came to the house."

"But I escaped."

My heart stopped.

"Then who died?"

The screen changed.

A photograph appeared.

A woman.

Unidentified.

Victoria continued:

"I left a body behind."

"Richard believed it was mine."

"Margaret helped me."

"Elena helped me."

"Gabriel helped me."

"But someone betrayed us."

The recording stopped.

The screen went black.

I stared at it.

"Who?"

No answer.

Then the screen turned on again.

A new recording.

Victoria looked terrified.

"This is the final message."

"If you have found this room, then Richard knows."

"He's coming."

She leaned toward the camera.

"Charlotte, listen carefully."

"The person who betrayed us was not Margaret."

"Not Elena."

"Not Gabriel."

"Not Marcus."

I felt my heart pounding.

Victoria whispered:

"It was someone inside the hospital."

The recording ended.

The Hospital

Daniel immediately searched the old hospital records.

"We need the night your mother supposedly died."

He connected his laptop to the vault's database.

Thousands of archived documents appeared.

"Here."

The hospital.

Twenty-nine years ago.

Emergency admission.

Female patient.

Unknown identity.

Time of death: 11:52 p.m.

Daniel opened the file.

His face changed.

"What's wrong?"

"The body wasn't identified."

"What?"

"The hospital never confirmed the identity."

"Then why did everyone believe it was Victoria?"

Daniel clicked again.

"Because someone signed the identification form."

"Who?"

He turned the screen toward me.

I stared at the signature.

Dr. Samuel Reed.

Elena gasped.

"Samuel."

"Who is he?"

"My father's closest friend."

Daniel looked through the database.

"He died ten years ago."

I frowned.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

Then he opened another record.

A photograph appeared.

Dr. Samuel Reed.

Standing beside Victoria.

And beside him—

Richard Blackwell.

My stomach turned.

"How did he know Richard?"

Elena whispered:

"He was working for him."

We found the doctor's private archive hidden inside the hospital database.

It contained hundreds of files.

The final file was labeled:

VICTORIA — FINAL NIGHT.

I opened it.

A video appeared.

A hospital corridor.

11:18 p.m.

A nurse pushed a stretcher through the doors.

On it was a woman.

Her face was covered.

Behind her walked Dr. Reed.

Then Richard.

Then—

Margaret.

I stared.

"What?"

Daniel leaned closer.

"Why was Margaret there?"

We watched.

Richard entered a private room.

Margaret followed.

Dr. Reed closed the door.

The video continued.

Ten minutes later, Margaret walked out.

Alone.

She looked devastated.

Then she handed something to Dr. Reed.

A small envelope.

Daniel froze.

"That's the trust key."

I stared.

Margaret had given Richard the key.

Or so we thought.

Then the footage showed something unexpected.

Margaret looked directly at the security camera.

She moved her lips.

No sound.

Daniel enhanced the audio.

Her voice became audible.

"She's alive."

I froze.

Margaret had been telling Richard that Victoria was alive.

She hadn't betrayed her.

She had been warning him.

Then Richard turned toward the camera.

His face became furious.

He grabbed Margaret.

The footage ended.

I stared at the screen.

"Grandmother was protecting my mother."

Elena nodded.

"Yes."

"Then who betrayed them?"

Daniel opened another file.

The answer appeared.

A payment record.

SAMUEL REED — $10,000,000

Paid by:

RICHARD BLACKWELL.

The date was the night Victoria disappeared.

Daniel whispered:

"He helped Richard fake the death."

"Why?"

"Because Richard needed everyone to believe Victoria was dead."

I shook my head.

"Then why did he leave the body?"

Daniel looked at me.

"Because someone else was supposed to die."

"Who?"

He opened the final document.

The name appeared.

ELENA MARLOWE.

My mother had never been the intended victim.

Elena was.

Richard had planned to kill Elena.

But Victoria had discovered the plan.

So she switched identities.

She became the woman Richard believed he had killed.

Elena survived.

Victoria disappeared.

And everyone believed Victoria was dead.

I stared at the screen.

"My mother sacrificed herself."

Elena nodded.

"To save me."

The Woman Who Came Back

The vault door suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

A woman stood there.

Older.

Gray-haired.

Wearing a simple black coat.

I recognized her immediately.

My heart stopped.

"Mom?"

Elena gasped.

Victoria smiled.

"Hello, Charlotte."

I couldn't move.

For twenty-nine years, I'd believed she was dead.

I had cried over her grave.

I had dreamed about her.

I had spent my entire life wondering why she had abandoned me.

And now she was standing ten feet away.

Alive.

I whispered:

"You're alive."

Victoria nodded.

"I'm sorry."

I ran toward her.

She caught me.

I collapsed against her chest.

She held me tightly.

For the first time in my life, I heard my mother's heartbeat.

I cried like a child.

"You left me."

"I know."

"You let me think you were dead."

"I know."

"Why?"

"Because every person who knew I was alive became a target."

I pulled away.

"Then why come back now?"

Victoria looked at Richard's image on the screen.

"Because he's no longer hiding."

She looked at Daniel.

"And because my children are finally strong enough to fight him."

Daniel approached slowly.

"You knew?"

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

"I knew where you were."

"You knew what he did to me."

"I did."

"Why didn't you save me?"

Victoria broke down.

"Because if I came for you, Richard would have found Charlotte."

Daniel's face hardened.

"You chose her."

Victoria shook her head.

"I chose both of you."

"Then why did I grow up believing you abandoned me?"

"Because Richard made sure you hated me."

Daniel looked away.

Silence filled the room.

Then Victoria walked toward him.

"I am sorry."

Daniel finally looked at her.

For several seconds, he didn't speak.

Then he hugged her.

I watched them.

For the first time, my family stood together.

Broken.

Damaged.

But together.

Then the lights suddenly went out.

Victoria's expression changed.

"He's here."

A slow clap echoed through the chamber.

Everyone turned.

Richard Blackwell stepped from the shadows.

Two armed men stood behind him.

He smiled.

"Beautiful."

Victoria stepped in front of us.

"Richard."

"Victoria."

She stared at him.

"You should have stayed dead."

Richard laughed.

"I've been waiting twenty-nine years to hear you say that."

He looked at me.

"Charlotte."

I stood beside my mother.

"You lost."

"No."

He smiled.

"You just found out the truth."

He raised a remote.

The walls lit up.

Every screen showed the same image.

Solmere Hotel.

Every entrance.

Every hallway.

Every elevator.

Then one final screen appeared.

A live feed of the street outside.

Police vehicles.

Federal agents.

News reporters.

Richard smiled.

"Do you know what happens when the world learns that Victoria Marlowe is alive?"

I stared at him.

"The truth comes out."

"No."

He pressed the button.

A file appeared.

VICTORIA MARLOWE — MURDER CHARGES.

I froze.

Richard smiled.

"Your mother isn't the victim anymore."

He looked at the police feeds.

"She's the suspect."

Victoria went pale.

Richard continued:

"I spent twenty-nine years building evidence that she murdered the woman whose body was found that night."

Daniel stepped forward.

"That's impossible."

Richard smiled.

"I don't need it to be true."

He looked at me.

"I only need the authorities to believe it long enough."

Sirens echoed above us.

Victoria looked at me.

"Charlotte..."

I grabbed her hand.

"We're not running."

Richard smiled.

"Then you'll lose her."

I looked directly into his eyes.

"No."

I held up the master key.

"We have the evidence."

Richard's smile disappeared.

"Not all of it."

"What are you talking about?"

He pointed toward the floor.

"The real evidence isn't here."

I frowned.

"Where?"

He smiled.

"At the place where your mother actually died."

Victoria's face went white.

Richard whispered:

"The house."

Then the lights came back on.

But Richard and his men were gone.

Only one thing remained on the floor.

A photograph.

Victoria's old house.

And beneath it, a handwritten address.

I looked at my mother.

She was trembling.

"Mom?"

She stared at the photograph.

Then whispered:

"That's where I buried the truth."

I picked it up.

"Then we're going there."

Victoria shook her head.

"No."

"Why?"

Her eyes filled with fear.

"Because the last time I went there..."

She swallowed.

"...your father died."

I froze.

"Gabriel?"

Victoria looked at me.

"No."

"Your real grandfather."

"Alexander."

And suddenly I understood.

The truth about my mother's death wasn't the end of the story.

It was only the beginning.

Because if Alexander had died that night—

then the man who claimed to be my grandfather...

had been impersonating him for twenty-nine years.

And somewhere inside that old house was the evidence proving exactly who had stolen my family.

Who had stolen Solmere.

May you like

And who had been waiting all these years...

for me to come home.
