Chapter 9 — The Man Behind the Conspiracy

Chapter 9 — The Man Behind the Conspiracy
Charlotte couldn't breathe.
The face on the screen had frozen in place.
A familiar face.
A face she had seen at Christmas dinners.
Corporate celebrations.
Family photographs.
Funerals.
A face that had smiled at her when she was a child.
A face she had never thought to question.
Marcus Vale.
Elena stood behind her, trembling.
Charlotte whispered:
"Who is he?"
Elena didn't answer immediately.
She stared at the frozen image as though she were looking at a ghost.
Finally, she said:
"He was your grandfather's younger brother."
Charlotte's eyes widened.
"Another brother?"
"Yes."
"Why have I never heard of him?"
"Because Thomas erased him."
Charlotte looked back at the screen.
"Then why was he everywhere?"
"Because Thomas couldn't erase someone who looked exactly like him."
Charlotte felt sick.
"What does that mean?"
Elena pulled a chair toward her.
"Sit down."
Charlotte remained standing.
"No."
"Charlotte—"
"I've spent my entire life being lied to."
Her voice shook.
"I want the truth."
Elena nodded.
"Then you need to hear all of it."
Twenty-Nine Years Earlier
Marcus Vale was the forgotten son.
Thomas was the heir.
Theodore was the brilliant one.
Marcus was the angry one.
He grew up believing the family had cheated him.
When Thomas inherited the Vale fortune, Marcus received almost nothing.
When Thomas built Solmere, Marcus was excluded.
When Thomas married into power, Marcus disappeared.
But he didn't leave.
He watched.
He studied.
And eventually, he built something of his own.
A network inside Blackwell.
Unlike Thomas and Theodore, Marcus didn't want money.
He wanted control.
"Control over what?"
Charlotte asked.
Elena looked at her.
"People."
Charlotte frowned.
"What does that mean?"
"Marcus collected secrets."
"Like Blackwell?"
"Worse."
Elena's voice dropped.
"He collected weaknesses."
Politicians.
Judges.
Executives.
Lawyers.
Police officers.
Anyone who could be useful.
Then he began using those secrets to manipulate decisions.
Companies changed hands.
Executives disappeared.
Court cases were suddenly dismissed.
Competitors went bankrupt.
And nobody understood why.
"Your mother discovered him," Elena said.
"And that's why she died."
"Yes."
Charlotte sat down.
"What about Gabriel?"
"Gabriel discovered him too."
"Then why did Gabriel help build Blackwell?"
"Because he thought he could control it."
Charlotte laughed bitterly.
"Nobody could control it."
"No."
Elena looked at the screen.
"Except Marcus."
Charlotte replayed the footage.
Marcus entered Victoria's house.
He wasn't wearing a mask.
He wasn't hiding.
He walked directly into the room.
Victoria stood waiting.
She looked frightened.
But not surprised.
Marcus said something.
Charlotte increased the volume.
The audio was damaged.
Then—
A sentence became clear.
"You should have stayed dead."
Charlotte froze.
Victoria answered:
"I was never afraid of you."
Marcus smiled.
Then the footage cut.
Charlotte stared at Elena.
"What happened next?"
"We don't know."
"You were there."
"I arrived afterward."
"Why?"
"Victoria called me."
"Then why did you run?"
Elena looked away.
"Because I was holding you."
Charlotte froze.
"What?"
Elena began crying.
"You were six months old."
"I thought you were at the hospital."
"I was."
"But you said—"
"I lied."
Charlotte stood.
"You had me?"
Elena nodded.
"After Marcus left, I found you in the nursery."
"What happened to Victoria?"
"She was alive."
Charlotte's heart stopped.
"Alive?"
"Yes."
"Then who killed her?"
Elena whispered:
"She told me to take you."
"Where?"
"To the hospital."
"Why?"
"Because she knew Marcus would come back."
Charlotte's hands shook.
"And then?"
"I drove."
"You left her?"
"She made me."
"Why didn't you save her?"
Elena's voice broke.
"Because I believed she was already dead."
Charlotte closed her eyes.
All these years.
All those lies.
All because everyone had believed the same thing.
A loud crash came from the front of the bookstore.
Elena immediately stood.
"Someone's here."
Charlotte turned.
"Who?"
"I don't know."
The lights went out.
A second later, glass shattered.
Someone fired through the front window.
Charlotte dropped to the floor.
Elena grabbed her arm.
"Back door."
They ran.
Another shot.
The bullet struck the wall beside Charlotte.
They reached the alley.
A black SUV was waiting.
The door opened.
Adrian stepped out.
"Get in!"
Charlotte stopped.
"You lied to me."
"We don't have time."
"You said you were with my mother."
"I was."
"You said you weren't there."
"I wasn't there when she died."
"Where were you?"
Adrian looked toward the bookstore.
"Inside the house."
Charlotte stared.
"What were you doing?"
"I was trying to get her out."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because she made me promise."
"Everyone uses my mother as an excuse."
Adrian grabbed her hand.
"Charlotte, if you stay here, you're going to die."
She looked behind her.
The bookstore was on fire.
Elena stood frozen.
Charlotte pulled her toward the SUV.
"Come with us."
Elena shook her head.
"No."
"You're my mother."
"And that's exactly why."
She kissed Charlotte's forehead.
"Go."
"Elena—"
"Go!"
Charlotte climbed into the SUV.
Adrian accelerated away.
Elena watched them disappear.
Then someone stepped from the burning bookstore.
Marcus.
He looked at Elena.
"You're still alive."
Elena stared at him.
"For now."
Marcus smiled.
"Where is she?"
Elena said nothing.
He walked closer.
"Where is Charlotte?"
Elena looked directly into his eyes.
"You'll never have her."
Marcus smiled.
"That's what Victoria said."
Then he raised his gun.
The Safe House
Charlotte sat in silence.
Adrian drove for nearly an hour before pulling into an abandoned estate outside the city.
The house was surrounded by trees.
No neighbors.
No lights.
No signs of life.
Charlotte stepped out.
"What is this?"
"One of your grandfather's properties."
"Which grandfather?"
Adrian didn't answer.
Charlotte walked inside.
The house was empty except for a single desk.
On it sat a laptop.
Adrian opened it.
"This is where Thomas kept the original Blackwell records."
Charlotte looked at him.
"How many secrets are in there?"
"Enough to destroy half the city."
"And Marcus?"
"Enough to destroy him."
Charlotte sat.
"Show me."
Adrian opened the files.
Thousands of names appeared.
Politicians.
Business leaders.
Judges.
Bankers.
Then Charlotte saw something familiar.
MARGARET VALE.
She clicked.
A document opened.
Her grandmother had received millions from an offshore account.
Charlotte's heart sank.
"She worked for Marcus."
Adrian shook his head.
"Not exactly."
"Then what?"
"She was blackmailed."
"With what?"
Adrian opened another file.
A photograph appeared.
Charlotte froze.
It showed Margaret holding a baby.
Charlotte.
Beside her stood Marcus.
The date was twenty-nine years earlier.
Charlotte stared.
"Why was she holding me?"
Adrian didn't answer.
She opened the next document.
A medical report.
Then another.
Then a birth certificate.
Her name was different.
Charlotte Marlowe.
Her biological mother's surname.
Charlotte whispered:
"My name wasn't Vale."
"No."
"Marcus changed it."
"Yes."
"Why?"
Adrian looked at her.
"Because he wanted to control the trust."
Charlotte frowned.
"How?"
"If you legally remained a Marlowe, the trust would pass to Elena."
Charlotte's eyes widened.
"And Marcus wanted Elena gone."
"Yes."
"So he changed my identity."
"With forged records."
Charlotte looked at the documents.
"He erased me."
"Yes."
"Then made me a Vale."
"Yes."
"And everyone believed it."
"Almost everyone."
Charlotte stared at Adrian.
"You knew."
"I knew there was a conspiracy."
"You didn't know the details."
"No."
"Why?"
"Because your mother kept the truth divided between us."
Charlotte looked away.
For the first time, she understood Victoria's strategy.
No one person had known everything.
That way, if someone was captured, the entire plan couldn't be exposed.
A notification suddenly appeared on the laptop.
NEW MESSAGE.
Charlotte clicked it.
A video opened.
Marcus appeared on screen.
He was sitting behind a desk.
Calm.
Smiling.
"Charlotte."
She stared.
Marcus continued.
"By now, you've learned enough to be dangerous."
Charlotte leaned closer.
"You killed my mother."
Marcus shook his head.
"No."
"You destroyed my identity."
"No."
"You manipulated my family."
"Yes."
Charlotte froze.
Marcus smiled.
"Finally."
"Why?"
"Because your mother was hiding something from me."
"What?"
"You."
Charlotte's expression hardened.
"Why do you want me?"
"Because you own something that belongs to me."
"The trust."
"Not the money."
Marcus leaned forward.
"The key."
Charlotte touched the black key in her pocket.
Marcus smiled.
"Your grandfather designed the trust so that only your original identity could unlock it."
Charlotte stared.
"Then why did you erase my name?"
"Because I needed to know where the key was."
"You didn't know?"
"No."
Marcus's smile disappeared.
"Your mother hid it."
Charlotte's heart pounded.
"Where?"
Marcus didn't answer.
Instead, the video changed.
A photograph appeared.
Victoria.
Pregnant.
Standing outside a hospital.
Marcus spoke:
"Your mother didn't just hide your identity."
The image changed.
A newborn baby.
Then another.
Then another.
Three babies.
Charlotte stared.
"What is this?"
Marcus smiled.
"You're not the only beneficiary."
Charlotte's blood turned cold.
"There were three children."
"Yes."
"Who are they?"
Marcus leaned toward the camera.
"One of them is dead."
Another image appeared.
A little boy.
"One disappeared."
Another image.
A young woman.
"And one..."
The screen went black.
Then a final photograph appeared.
A young man.
Charlotte stared at him.
She knew that face.
She had seen it recently.
In the hotel.
At the board meeting.
Standing beside Adrian.
Her breath stopped.
"No."
Adrian looked at the screen.
His face went pale.
Charlotte turned toward him.
"Who is that?"
Adrian didn't answer.
"Who is he?"
Finally, Adrian whispered:
"Your brother."
Charlotte stared.
"That's impossible."
Adrian looked at her.
"He has been working inside Solmere for years."
Charlotte shook her head.
"What's his name?"
Adrian's voice was barely audible.
"Daniel."
Charlotte froze.
Daniel.
The security chief.
The man who had helped her recover the footage.
The man she had trusted.
The man who had access to every camera in the hotel.
The man who had been helping her uncover the conspiracy.
Her own brother.
Charlotte slowly stood.
"Where is he?"
Adrian checked his phone.
His face changed.
"He's gone."
Charlotte's heart dropped.
"Where?"
"Solmere."
"Why?"
Adrian looked at the security feed.
Daniel was standing alone in the lobby.
He looked directly into Camera 17.
Then he removed his security badge.
Placed it on the desk.
And walked toward the private elevator.
Charlotte whispered:
"He's going to the vault."
Adrian nodded.
"Why?"
Charlotte stared at the black key in her hand.
"Because he knows where the trust is."
Then her phone vibrated.
One message.
From Daniel.
You were never supposed to find me this soon, sister.
A second message appeared.
But now that you have...
May you like
Then the final line.
We need to talk before Marcus finds out I'm alive.
