Chapter 14 — The Price of Betrayal

Chapter 14 — The Price of Betrayal

The house was exactly as I remembered it.

White columns.

Black shutters.

A long gravel driveway disappearing beneath ancient oak trees.

But I hadn't seen it since I was a child.

Back then, I believed it was my mother's home.

Now I knew it had been a crime scene.

A hiding place.

And perhaps the place where my family had been destroyed.

Victoria sat beside me in the car.

She hadn't spoken for twenty minutes.

Daniel drove.

Elena sat in the passenger seat.

I watched my mother staring through the window.

"Mom."

She didn't answer.

"Was Alexander killed here?"

Her fingers tightened around the old wedding ring.

"Yes."

"By Richard?"

She closed her eyes.

"Not directly."

I frowned.

"Then who?"

Victoria looked at me.

"Someone I trusted."

The same words again.

Someone she trusted.

Someone close enough to hurt her.

Someone who had been standing beside our family while secretly destroying it.

I felt a chill.

"Who?"

Victoria looked toward the house.

"You'll see."

The front door opened without resistance.

No alarm.

No security.

No dust.

That frightened me more than anything.

Someone had been maintaining the house.

Daniel noticed it too.

"This place isn't abandoned."

I looked around.

Fresh flowers stood on the dining table.

A fire had recently burned in the fireplace.

And there were four cups of coffee.

Still warm.

Elena whispered:

"He's expecting us."

Victoria nodded.

"Yes."

"Who?"

She looked at me.

"The man who betrayed Alexander."

We moved deeper into the house.

The hallway seemed smaller than I remembered.

Then I saw it.

A photograph hanging crookedly on the wall.

My mother.

Alexander.

Gabriel.

Margaret.

And a fifth person.

I stared.

I knew him.

Everyone did.

The man who had once served as chairman of Solmere.

The man who had publicly defended my family for decades.

The man who had always claimed to be loyal.

Samuel Cross.

Adrian's father.

My stomach dropped.

"That's him."

Victoria nodded.

"He betrayed us."

Daniel turned.

"Then Adrian knew?"

"No."

Victoria's answer was immediate.

"Adrian was a child."

I stared at the photograph.

"Then what did Samuel do?"

Victoria looked at me.

"He sold Alexander."

The Night Everything Was Lost

Victoria walked into the old study.

She stood beside the fireplace.

"This was where Alexander kept the original trust."

I looked at the walls.

"Where is it?"

"Here."

She pressed a hidden panel.

A section of the wall opened.

Inside was a narrow compartment.

Empty.

Daniel frowned.

"Someone already took it."

Victoria nodded.

"Samuel."

"When?"

"The night Alexander died."

She looked at the fireplace.

"Alexander discovered that Samuel had been working with Richard."

"Why?"

"Money."

"How much?"

"Enough to destroy a family."

I opened an old ledger.

The numbers were staggering.

Millions.

Then tens of millions.

Samuel had been paid to provide Richard with confidential information.

But there was something worse.

A handwritten note.

PAYMENT FOR ALEXANDER'S LOCATION.

I stared at it.

"He told Richard where Alexander was."

"Yes."

"Why didn't Alexander leave?"

"Because he trusted Samuel."

My hands tightened.

"That was the betrayal."

Victoria nodded.

"But Samuel wasn't alone."

I looked at her.

"Who else?"

She didn't answer.

Then Daniel found a second ledger.

He opened it.

The final payment had been made to:

ADRIAN CROSS.

I stared.

"No."

Daniel looked at me.

"The payment was made twenty-nine years later."

The date was only months ago.

Adrian had received money from the same network.

Again.

And again.

And again.

My stomach turned.

I had accused Adrian before.

He had admitted taking money from Marcus.

But this was different.

These payments came directly from Richard.

I whispered:

"He was still working for them."

My phone rang.

Adrian.

I answered.

"Where are you?"

Silence.

Then:

"Charlotte."

His voice sounded broken.

"You found the house."

"Yes."

"You found the ledger."

"Yes."

"I can explain."

"No."

"Please."

"You lied to me."

"I was protecting you."

"Everyone says that."

Adrian exhaled.

"Your mother asked me to do it."

I froze.

"What?"

"She asked me to work for Richard."

Victoria's face changed.

I turned toward her.

"Mom?"

She closed her eyes.

Adrian continued.

"I had to make Richard believe I was still loyal."

"Why?"

"Because he had Elena."

I looked at Elena.

She nodded.

Adrian's voice cracked.

"He threatened to kill her."

I stared at my mother.

"You knew?"

Victoria whispered:

"Yes."

I felt betrayed all over again.

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

"Because every person who knew the plan became a target."

I shook my head.

"That doesn't make it right."

"No."

She stepped closer.

"It doesn't."

Adrian arrived twenty minutes later.

He walked into the study alone.

He looked exhausted.

Older than I had ever seen him.

He placed a small metal box on the desk.

"This is what Richard paid me to find."

I stared at it.

"What's inside?"

"The evidence."

"Why bring it here?"

"Because I finally decided whose side I was on."

Daniel opened the box.

Inside was a flash drive.

And a photograph.

Adrian picked up the photograph.

"This was taken the night Alexander died."

The image showed Alexander standing beside a car.

Behind him was Samuel Cross.

And beside Samuel—

Richard.

But there was another person.

A woman.

Her face was partially hidden.

I stared.

"Who is she?"

Adrian looked at me.

"That's the person you need to fear."

"Who?"

He turned the photograph over.

There was a handwritten name.

MARGARET VALE.

I stared.

"No."

Victoria stepped forward.

"She was there."

"She betrayed you?"

Victoria shook her head.

"No."

"Then why was she standing with Richard?"

"Because she was trying to stop him."

Adrian looked at me.

"But she failed."

Daniel connected the flash drive to the old computer.

A video appeared.

The date:

Twenty-nine years ago.

The camera showed Alexander in the study.

He was arguing with Samuel.

"You sold me."

Samuel looked furious.

"I had no choice."

"You always have a choice."

"Not when Richard has my daughter."

Alexander froze.

"Adrian?"

Samuel nodded.

"He's holding him."

Alexander's face changed.

"Then we go to the police."

"He'll kill him."

"We can't give him the empire."

"I know."

"Then why?"

Samuel broke down.

"Because I'm a father."

Alexander stared at him.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Samuel whispered:

"I'm sorry."

The video cut.

A second recording began.

Margaret entered.

She was holding a gun.

Alexander looked at her.

"What are you doing?"

"Saving you."

"From whom?"

She pointed toward the door.

"Everyone."

Then Richard entered.

He smiled.

"You're all so predictable."

The recording ended.

I stared at the screen.

"That's it?"

Daniel shook his head.

"There are more."

He opened another file.

The next recording showed Richard arguing with Margaret.

"You promised me the key."

"I gave you a fake."

Richard slapped her.

Margaret fell.

"You think you can fool me?"

"I already did."

Richard raised his gun.

Then—

A gunshot.

The screen went black.

I covered my mouth.

"Who fired?"

Daniel checked the next file.

A final recording opened.

The camera showed Alexander running through the hallway.

Behind him—

Samuel.

Then Margaret.

Then Richard.

And finally—

Victoria.

Alexander stopped.

He looked at Victoria.

"Take the children."

Victoria nodded.

"I will."

Alexander turned toward Richard.

"You'll never get the trust."

Richard smiled.

"No."

He raised his gun.

"I don't need the trust."

He looked toward Victoria.

"I only need your daughter."

The recording ended.

I stared at the screen.

"He wanted me."

Victoria nodded.

"He always wanted you."

"Why?"

"Because you were the legal heir."

"Then why didn't he kill me?"

"Because dead heirs are inconvenient."

I frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Victoria looked at me.

"He needed you alive."

"Why?"

"Because only you could unlock the trust."

Suddenly, headlights appeared outside.

Daniel looked through the window.

"Cars."

"How many?"

"Six."

Adrian checked his phone.

"Richard."

Victoria stood.

"He's here."

I looked at her.

"What do we do?"

She reached into the desk.

Pulled out a pistol.

"We finish it."

The front doors exploded inward.

Men in black entered.

Daniel pulled me behind the desk.

Gunfire filled the room.

Glass shattered.

Elena screamed.

Adrian fired back.

Victoria stood in the center of the room.

Calm.

Focused.

She fired once.

A man dropped.

Then twice.

Another fell.

I stared at her.

This wasn't the mother I remembered.

This was the woman who had survived twenty-nine years of war.

Then a voice echoed through the house.

"Victoria!"

Richard.

She looked toward the hallway.

He stepped into view.

Holding a gun.

Beside him was a terrified young woman.

I froze.

I knew her.

She worked at Solmere.

My assistant.

Richard pressed the gun against her head.

"Drop yours."

Victoria slowly lowered her weapon.

Richard smiled.

"You always were predictable."

I stepped forward.

"Let her go."

Richard looked at me.

"Charlotte."

He smiled.

"Come here."

"No."

"Then she dies."

The young woman began crying.

I looked at Daniel.

He shook his head.

Don't.

But I couldn't let her die.

I stepped forward.

Richard lowered his weapon slightly.

"That's better."

I stopped three feet away.

"What do you want?"

"The key."

I pulled it from my pocket.

Richard smiled.

"Give it to me."

I held it up.

Then dropped it.

Richard looked down.

At the same moment, Daniel fired.

Richard ducked.

I grabbed the young woman.

Victoria tackled Richard.

Everything became chaos.

Then a gunshot.

Silence.

I turned.

Victoria was on the floor.

Blood spread across her chest.

"Mom!"

I ran toward her.

Richard was gone.

Again.

I knelt beside her.

"No."

She grabbed my hand.

"Don't cry."

"You're going to be okay."

She smiled.

"Charlotte."

"What?"

"There is one final truth."

"Tell me."

She looked at Daniel.

Then Elena.

Then me.

"The man who betrayed Alexander..."

She coughed.

"...wasn't Samuel."

I froze.

"What?"

Victoria whispered:

"Samuel was protecting Adrian."

I stared.

"Then who?"

She closed her eyes.

"Gabriel."

I couldn't breathe.

"My father?"

Victoria nodded.

"He made the deal with Richard."

"But why?"

"To save you."

I shook my head.

"Why would he betray Alexander?"

Victoria's voice became faint.

"Because Gabriel wasn't your father."

I froze.

"What?"

She looked at me.

"Your biological father..."

A pause.

"...was Richard Blackwell."

The room disappeared.

I couldn't hear anything.

Couldn't breathe.

My entire identity shattered again.

Richard wasn't simply the man behind the conspiracy.

He was my biological father.

The man who had spent twenty-nine years hunting me...

had been the reason I existed.

Victoria squeezed my hand.

"I'm sorry."

I stared at her.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I wanted you to hate him."

She smiled weakly.

"Not yourself."

Then her eyes closed.

"Mom!"

I screamed.

Daniel rushed toward us.

Elena began crying.

Adrian stood frozen.

And somewhere outside, sirens grew louder.

Richard was gone.

But now I knew why he had never killed me.

Why he had manipulated the trust.

Why he had spent twenty-nine years watching me.

Why he had wanted me alive.

Not merely because I was the heir.

Not merely because I controlled forty-seven billion dollars.

Because I was his daughter.

And as I held my mother's hand, I realized something even more terrifying.

Richard had not been trying to destroy my family.

May you like

He had been trying to reclaim it.

And now that he knew I finally understood who he was, he would come for me—not as his enemy, but as his daughter.
