Chapter 11 — The Recording They Couldn't Destroy

Chapter 11 — The Recording They Couldn't Destroy

The little girl stood inside the elevator.

Nobody moved.

She was perhaps twelve years old.

Too young to understand why a room full of powerful adults had suddenly become silent.

Too old to mistake the fear in their faces for surprise.

Charlotte stared at her.

“What did you say?”

The girl tightened her grip around the photograph.

“My mother said you're my sister.”

Evelyn went completely still.

Nathan whispered:

“No.”

Charlotte looked at him.

“You know her.”

Nathan shook his head.

“I know the photograph.”

“Who is she?”

Nobody answered.

Charlotte walked toward the elevator.

The girl didn't move.

“What's your name?”

“Lily.”

“Lily what?”

The girl hesitated.

“Vale.”

Charlotte's breath caught.

“Who is your mother?”

Lily looked toward Evelyn.

Then Nathan.

Then Adrian.

Finally, she looked back at Charlotte.

“She said I shouldn't tell anyone.”

Charlotte crouched carefully in front of her.

“You can tell me.”

Lily's eyes filled with tears.

“She said if I ever found you, I should give you this.”

She held out the photograph.

Charlotte took it.

It showed two little girls.

One was unmistakably Charlotte at approximately six years old.

The other stood beside her.

Same eyes.

Same dark hair.

Same small dimple beneath the left cheek.

Charlotte stared.

“I don't remember her.”

Lily whispered:

“You weren't supposed to.”

A sound came from behind them.

Evelyn.

She was crying.

Charlotte stood.

“You knew.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“I knew she survived.”

“You knew I had a sister.”

“Yes.”

“And you never told me.”

“I was trying to protect her.”

Charlotte laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

Nathan stepped forward.

“Charlotte, listen.”

“No.”

She turned toward him.

“I am done listening to explanations that begin with protection.”

Lily looked frightened.

Charlotte immediately softened.

She knelt again.

“I'm not angry with you.”

Lily nodded.

“Your mother said you would be.”

“My mother?”

“Yes.”

“What's her name?”

Lily looked toward the corridor.

“Bianca.”

Charlotte's blood ran cold.

“Bianca is your mother?”

Lily nodded.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Charlotte stood slowly.

“Then Bianca isn't dead.”

Adrian's face hardened.

“No.”

“She was here.”

“Yes.”

“She knew Lily.”

“Yes.”

Charlotte looked at the photograph again.

“Then why did Bianca tell everyone she hated my family?”

Nathan answered:

“Because she had to.”

Lily suddenly reached into her jacket.

“There is something else.”

She pulled out a small cassette recorder.

Old.

Scratched.

Wrapped in plastic.

Charlotte stared.

“What is that?”

“My mother said never to play it unless I found you.”

“Why?”

“She said it would explain everything.”

Charlotte took the recorder.

The device had no batteries.

Adrian checked it.

“There's a battery compartment.”

He opened it.

A fresh battery was already inside.

Charlotte looked at him.

“Someone prepared this.”

“Yes.”

She pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then a woman's voice.

Evelyn's.

Charlotte froze.

“Charlotte, if you're hearing this, then the plan failed.”

Evelyn's face went pale.

The recording continued.

“I need you to understand something before you hear the rest.”

Static.

“I lied to you.”

Charlotte looked at her mother.

Evelyn whispered:

“I know.”

The recording continued.

“I told you your sister died.”

Charlotte's eyes widened.

“I told you because Arthur believed she died.”

A pause.

“She didn't.”

Lily stepped closer.

Charlotte took her hand.

The voice continued.

“Your sister was born eighteen months after you.”

Charlotte stared at Lily.

“She was hidden because Arthur had discovered the succession documents.”

Another pause.

“He believed that if I had another child, I would name that child as my heir.”

Evelyn's voice became weaker.

“So I gave him what he wanted.”

A recording of a baby's cry played faintly in the background.

“I told him she was dead.”

Charlotte looked at Evelyn.

“You had her hidden.”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Under another name.”

The recording continued.

“Her name became Lily Hart.”

Lily looked down.

Charlotte squeezed her hand.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

The recording answered.

“Because Arthur had spies inside our home.”

Static.

“Someone was reporting every conversation.”

Charlotte's stomach tightened.

Then the voice said something that made everyone freeze.

“The spy was your father.”

Charlotte looked at Evelyn.

“No.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Charlotte…”

“No.”

The recording continued.

“Thomas didn't betray us willingly.”

Charlotte stopped breathing.

“He was blackmailed.”

A long silence.

“Arthur had evidence that Thomas had killed someone.”

Charlotte stared.

“Who?”

The recording didn't answer.

Instead, Evelyn said:

“If Thomas refused to cooperate, Arthur would have him arrested.”

Charlotte's voice trembled.

“Who did Dad kill?”

Evelyn whispered:

“His own brother.”

Nathan stepped backward.

“That isn't possible.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“You were too young.”

“Dad had no brother.”

“He did.”

“Who?”

Evelyn stared at the recorder.

“Julian.”

Charlotte's heart stopped.

The man who had appeared in the hotel.

The man claiming to be their grandfather's discarded grandson.

The man who had demanded control of Solmere.

Charlotte looked at Nathan.

“He said he was your twin.”

Nathan shook his head.

“He was.”

“But you said he died.”

“I was told he did.”

Evelyn's face was devastated.

“Arthur told us Julian died.”

Charlotte looked toward the dark hallway.

“Then Julian is alive.”

“Yes.”

“And Dad killed him?”

“No.”

Evelyn's voice cracked.

“Arthur made everyone believe Thomas killed him.”

Charlotte stared.

“Why?”

“Because Julian had discovered something.”

“What?”

“The recording.”

The cassette clicked.

Another voice appeared.

Thomas.

Charlotte's father.

“Evelyn, if you're hearing this, I've failed.”

Charlotte covered her mouth.

She hadn't heard his voice in years.

The warmth.

The hesitation.

The familiar rhythm.

It almost broke her.

Thomas continued.

“I found the account.”

A pause.

“Arthur's private account.”

Another pause.

“It isn't money.”

Charlotte frowned.

“What?”

Thomas continued.

“It is people.”

Charlotte looked at Adrian.

“What does that mean?”

The recording explained.

Arthur had been paying people to change identities.

Birth certificates.

Death certificates.

Medical records.

Adoption files.

Court records.

Everything.

People could disappear.

People could be created.

People could become someone else.

Charlotte felt sick.

“That means…”

“Yes,” Evelyn whispered.

“Your identity was erased.”

Charlotte looked at Lily.

“And hers was created.”

“Yes.”

The recording continued.

“I discovered that Arthur had used this network to control Solmere for decades.”

Thomas breathed heavily.

“Politicians. Judges. Executives. Police officers.”

Then his voice dropped.

“And one other thing.”

Static.

“He had another heir.”

Charlotte frowned.

“Who?”

Thomas said:

“Not Julian.”

Everyone froze.

Evelyn stared at the recorder.

Charlotte whispered:

“Then who?”

The recording continued.

“Arthur's first heir wasn't his grandson.”

A pause.

“She was his daughter.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Charlotte looked at her.

“Mom?”

“No.”

Thomas continued.

“Her name was Rebecca.”

Charlotte's heart pounded.

“Rebecca Vale.”

Lily stepped backward.

Evelyn looked at her.

“Rebecca was Arthur's firstborn.”

Charlotte stared.

“What happened to her?”

“She disappeared.”

“When?”

“Before you were born.”

“Why?”

“Because she refused to cooperate.”

Charlotte looked at the screen.

A file appeared.

REBECCA VALE — STATUS: DECEASED.

Then the system changed.

STATUS: UNKNOWN.

Charlotte stared.

“She's alive.”

Adrian nodded.

“Apparently.”

The recording suddenly changed.

The sound quality became clearer.

Thomas was whispering.

“If something happens to me, don't trust the person who claims to be Rebecca.”

Charlotte frowned.

“Why?”

“Because Arthur created a replacement.”

Evelyn's eyes widened.

“Thomas knew.”

Charlotte looked at her.

“You knew too.”

Evelyn nodded slowly.

“Not everything.”

The recording continued.

“Someone has been impersonating Rebecca for years.”

Charlotte whispered:

“Bianca.”

The recorder clicked.

Thomas said:

“Bianca is not Rebecca.”

Charlotte froze.

The recording continued.

“Bianca is Rebecca's daughter.”

Silence.

Charlotte looked at Lily.

Lily's eyes widened.

“Then Bianca is…”

“Your cousin,” Evelyn whispered.

Charlotte stared.

The entire family history seemed to collapse.

Bianca wasn't her mother.

She wasn't her enemy.

She was family.

But why had she attacked Charlotte?

Why had she humiliated her?

Why had she pretended to hate her?

Charlotte suddenly remembered the lobby.

Bianca had dragged her across the marble floor.

But when Charlotte had fallen, Bianca had whispered something.

At the time, Charlotte thought it was an insult.

Now she remembered the exact words.

Look at me. Don't look at the cameras.

Charlotte's blood ran cold.

She turned toward Vivian.

“She was protecting me.”

Vivian nodded.

“Yes.”

“From what?”

“Being identified.”

The recorder clicked again.

Thomas's voice returned.

“Charlotte, if you ever meet Bianca, don't trust her.”

Charlotte froze.

“Why?”

“Because she will do whatever it takes to survive.”

The recording stopped.

Charlotte stared at the recorder.

“That doesn't make sense.”

Adrian took it.

“There may be another track.”

He examined the casing.

“There is.”

He opened the device.

A hidden microchip was inside.

He connected it to the computer.

A folder appeared.

FINAL RECORDING.

Charlotte stared.

“Play it.”

Adrian hesitated.

Then pressed the button.

Thomas appeared on the screen.

This time, he was terrified.

“Charlotte.”

He looked directly into the camera.

“If you are seeing this, then Arthur knows you survived.”

Charlotte's breathing stopped.

“He will tell you that your mother betrayed him.”

A pause.

“He will tell you that I betrayed your mother.”

Another pause.

“He will tell you that Nathan betrayed you.”

Thomas shook his head.

“None of that matters.”

Charlotte leaned closer.

“What matters is the person you haven't suspected.”

The screen flickered.

Thomas whispered:

“The person who has been controlling Arthur.”

Charlotte's eyes widened.

“Someone is above him.”

“Yes.”

“The person who controls Solmere.”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Thomas looked directly into the camera.

Then said:

“Your mother.”

Charlotte froze.

Evelyn stood perfectly still.

The room erupted in confusion.

Charlotte slowly turned toward her.

“No.”

Evelyn's face had gone white.

Thomas continued:

“Evelyn is not the woman you think she is.”

Charlotte stared.

The recording ended.

Silence.

Nobody moved.

Charlotte looked at her mother.

“Who are you?”

Evelyn didn't answer.

Charlotte stepped backward.

“Who are you?”

Evelyn finally whispered:

“My name is Evelyn.”

Charlotte's eyes filled with tears.

“But?”

Evelyn looked at her daughter.

“But I am not your mother.”

Charlotte's world shattered.

Lily began crying.

Nathan stood frozen.

Adrian looked toward the door.

And from somewhere in the darkness came a slow clap.

Everyone turned.

Arthur stepped into the light.

He smiled.

“Finally.”

Charlotte stared at him.

“Finally what?”

Arthur looked at Evelyn.

“Finally, she knows.”

Charlotte's voice shook.

“Who is my mother?”

Arthur smiled.

“That's the question.”

May you like

Then he looked at Lily.

“And that little girl has the answer.”
