Chapter 5 — The Man Who Controlled the Solmere Empire

Chapter 5 — The Man Who Controlled the Solmere Empire
By sunrise, Charlotte knew one thing for certain.
Adrian Mercer had lied about everything.
The question was no longer whether he controlled the Solmere Empire.
The question was how much of it he controlled.
Charlotte stood in the executive boardroom with a folder pressed against her chest.
Across the table sat the seven directors.
No one spoke.
At the far end stood Adrian.
He looked completely calm.
That frightened her more than anger would have.
“You forged my signature,” Charlotte said.
Adrian didn't blink.
“That accusation is absurd.”
“I have forensic evidence.”
“You have a preliminary report.”
“A report proving the transfer documents were manufactured.”
“Not proving I manufactured them.”
Charlotte smiled.
“You're very careful with your words.”
“It's how I became CEO.”
“No.”
She placed the folder on the table.
“You became CEO because everyone who could stop you disappeared.”
The room went silent.
Adrian's expression finally changed.
Only slightly.
But Charlotte saw it.
She had learned something important about Adrian Mercer.
He wasn't dangerous because he shouted.
He was dangerous because he rarely needed to.
He had spent years building a system where other people did the shouting for him.
Adrian walked toward the window.
Below them, the Solmere lobby was already filling with guests.
Thousands of people entered the hotel every day.
Almost none knew what was happening above them.
“Do you know why your father trusted me?” Adrian asked.
Charlotte didn't answer.
“Because he understood something your mother never did.”
“What?”
“An empire isn't controlled by the person whose name appears on the building.”
Adrian turned.
“It's controlled by the person who controls the people inside it.”
Charlotte stared at him.
“You've been running Solmere.”
“For eleven years.”
“Illegally.”
Adrian smiled.
“Legality is often a matter of documentation.”
“You forged my signature.”
“Allegedly.”
“You stole from my family.”
“Allegedly.”
“You declared me dead.”
His smile disappeared.
“That wasn't my decision.”
“Whose was it?”
Adrian looked toward Gideon.
“Ask your father's attorney.”
Charlotte turned.
Gideon said nothing.
Adrian smiled again.
“There are questions your lawyer has been avoiding for years.”
Charlotte looked at Gideon.
“Is that true?”
Gideon remained silent.
Charlotte's voice hardened.
“Tell me.”
Gideon finally spoke.
“Yes.”
Her heart sank.
“I knew your father was alive.”
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“For how long?”
“Since the night your mother died.”
Charlotte felt as though the room had shifted.
“And you never told me?”
“Your mother made me promise.”
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
Gideon lowered his eyes.
Charlotte turned back to Adrian.
“Then tell me the truth.”
Adrian shook his head.
“You aren't ready.”
Charlotte laughed.
“I was dragged across my own lobby.”
She stepped closer.
“I think I'm ready for anything.”
Adrian opened a drawer.
He removed a black leather folder.
Then placed it on the table.
“This is the real Solmere structure.”
Charlotte opened it.
The first page showed a complicated network of companies.
Holding corporations.
Trusts.
Offshore subsidiaries.
Private investment funds.
Charlotte read the names.
Some were familiar.
Most weren't.
At the top was a company called North Vale Holdings.
“What is this?”
“Your father's private company.”
“My father doesn't own Solmere.”
Adrian looked at her.
“He doesn't need to.”
Charlotte continued reading.
North Vale Holdings owned forty-two percent of another company.
That company owned thirty-seven percent of another.
And that company—
owned shares in Solmere.
Charlotte's eyes widened.
“How much?”
“Enough.”
Gideon leaned closer.
“Forty-eight percent.”
Charlotte looked at Adrian.
“You control forty-eight percent of my company.”
“No.”
He pointed to the final page.
“I control fifty-two.”
Charlotte froze.
“How?”
Adrian smiled.
“Your family trusts.”
The room seemed to stop breathing.
Charlotte read the documents again.
The Vale Family Trust had been divided into multiple voting entities.
Some shares were controlled by her mother.
Some by her father.
Some by a trustee.
And the trustee—
was Adrian Mercer.
Charlotte looked up.
“You made yourself trustee.”
“No.”
“Then who did?”
“Your mother.”
Charlotte shook her head.
“My mother would never.”
“She did.”
“Why?”
Adrian's expression became strangely quiet.
“Because she believed I could protect the company.”
Charlotte stared at him.
“From what?”
He didn't answer.
“From my father?”
Silence.
Charlotte's pulse quickened.
“Is that why she hired you?”
“Yes.”
“To protect Solmere from him?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did you betray her?”
Adrian's eyes hardened.
“Because she betrayed me first.”
Charlotte frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“She changed the succession plan.”
“When?”
“Six months before her death.”
Charlotte remembered the video.
Her mother's warning.
The hidden documents.
The diamonds.
The vault.
“What did she change?”
Adrian looked at Gideon.
Gideon whispered:
“She removed Adrian as trustee.”
Charlotte stared.
Adrian nodded.
“And that is why she had to die.”
Silence.
Charlotte felt sick.
“You're admitting it?”
“No.”
His voice remained calm.
“I'm telling you what you believe.”
“You expect me to believe your mother was killed because she removed you?”
Charlotte looked at Gideon.
“Was she?”
Gideon didn't answer.
That was enough.
The boardroom doors suddenly opened.
Vivian entered.
She was holding a tablet.
“Charlotte.”
Charlotte turned.
“What?”
Vivian looked at Adrian.
“We have a problem.”
Adrian's expression tightened.
“What?”
“The financial records were accessed.”
“By whom?”
Vivian looked at Charlotte.
“Her.”
Charlotte frowned.
“I didn't access anything.”
Vivian shook her head.
“Your biometric credentials did.”
Charlotte's blood ran cold.
“My credentials?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“The underground archive.”
Charlotte stared.
The vault.
Someone had used her identity.
Again.
Adrian stood.
“Lock the building.”
Charlotte looked at him.
“You can't.”
He smiled.
“Watch me.”
He turned toward the directors.
“Effective immediately, nobody leaves the Solmere.”
Charlotte stood.
“You're holding people hostage?”
“I'm protecting company property.”
“From whom?”
Adrian looked at her.
“From you.”
The security system activated.
Every elevator stopped.
The doors to the underground levels locked.
Phones inside the boardroom lost signal.
Charlotte looked around.
Gideon whispered:
“He's done this before.”
“How many times?”
“Enough.”
Adrian walked toward the center of the room.
“You came here expecting to take control.”
Charlotte said nothing.
“You thought showing a few documents would make everyone kneel.”
“No.”
“You thought being the heir would make you powerful.”
“No.”
“Then what did you come here for?”
Charlotte looked at him.
“The truth.”
Adrian smiled.
“The truth is dangerous.”
“I've noticed.”
“You should leave.”
Charlotte laughed.
“You really need a new line.”
Adrian leaned closer.
“This isn't a game.”
“Neither is murder.”
His face changed.
For the first time, she saw genuine fear.
Only for a second.
Then it disappeared.
A loud alarm sounded.
Everyone looked toward the hallway.
A security officer rushed inside.
“Sir.”
Adrian turned.
“What?”
“There's been a breach.”
“Where?”
“The underground archive.”
Adrian's face went pale.
Charlotte noticed.
“What is in the archive?”
He didn't answer.
She turned to Gideon.
“What is in there?”
Gideon looked terrified.
“Everything.”
“What does that mean?”
“Every original contract.”
“Every transaction?”
“Yes.”
“Every recording?”
“Yes.”
“Your mother's private files?”
“Yes.”
Charlotte looked at Adrian.
“That's why you're afraid.”
Adrian said nothing.
Charlotte walked toward the elevator.
Two guards blocked her.
“Move.”
They didn't.
She looked at Adrian.
“You're going to stop me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because if you enter that archive…”
He paused.
“You'll learn why your father has been controlling Solmere.”
Charlotte stared.
“My father?”
Adrian nodded.
“He never lost control.”
“What are you saying?”
Adrian looked directly at her.
“Your father owns the empire.”
Charlotte's face went cold.
“That isn't possible.”
“He has controlled it from the beginning.”
“Then what are you?”
Adrian smiled bitterly.
“The man who was supposed to keep it safe.”
The archive door was thirty feet underground.
Charlotte stood before it with Gideon and Vivian.
The security panel showed:
ACCESS DENIED.
Gideon entered his credentials.
Nothing.
Vivian tried hers.
Nothing.
Charlotte touched the screen.
The system immediately changed.
WELCOME, CHARLOTTE VALE.
The door unlocked.
Gideon stared.
“That's impossible.”
Charlotte looked at him.
“Apparently not.”
The door opened.
Inside were hundreds of boxes.
Documents.
Hard drives.
Photographs.
Legal records.
Everything the Vale family had accumulated for decades.
Charlotte walked slowly through the room.
Then she saw a wall covered with photographs.
Her childhood.
Her mother.
Her father.
Adrian.
Vivian.
Nathan.
And Charlotte herself.
Hundreds of photographs.
Some taken recently.
Some taken when she was a child.
She stepped closer.
“Someone has been watching me my entire life.”
Gideon whispered:
“Yes.”
Charlotte looked at the photographs.
Then one caught her attention.
It was taken three years earlier.
The night of her supposed death.
Charlotte stared.
In the photograph, her car sat at the edge of the mountain road.
But beside it stood a second vehicle.
A black sedan.
And a man was visible beside it.
Charlotte zoomed in.
Her father.
Alive.
Standing beside her wrecked car.
Charlotte's hands began to shake.
“He was there.”
Gideon looked.
“Yes.”
“He was there when I disappeared.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Gideon didn't answer.
Charlotte turned toward him.
“Why?”
Before he could speak, the archive lights went out.
A voice came through the darkness.
“You weren't supposed to find that.”
Charlotte froze.
The voice came from behind the shelves.
She knew it.
Her father's.
“Dad?”
A shadow moved.
Then he stepped into the emergency light.
Older.
Calm.
Alive.
He looked at Charlotte.
“I hoped you'd stay away.”
Charlotte stared at him.
“You watched me die.”
“I watched you survive.”
“You let everyone believe I was dead.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Her father looked at the photographs.
“Because if they knew you were alive…”
He paused.
“They would have come for you.”
Charlotte stepped closer.
“Who?”
Her father's eyes moved toward Adrian.
Then toward the ceiling.
Finally, he whispered:
“The people who really own the Solmere.”
Charlotte frowned.
“My family owns it.”
Her father shook his head.
“No.”
He pointed to the deepest part of the archive.
“Your family built it.”
Then he looked directly at her.
“But someone else built the system controlling it.”
Charlotte followed his gaze.
Behind a row of old filing cabinets stood a steel door.
Unlike the other doors, it had no electronic lock.
Only a keyhole.
Her mother's key.
Charlotte took it from her pocket.
Her father stepped back.
“Don't.”
She looked at him.
“You told me to stay away from the truth.”
“Yes.”
“I'm done listening.”
She inserted the key.
The lock turned.
The steel door opened.
Inside was a single desk.
On the desk sat an old tape recorder.
Beside it was a photograph.
Charlotte picked it up.
It showed her mother.
Her father.
Adrian.
And another man.
Charlotte didn't recognize him.
Her father did.
His face changed.
Charlotte looked at him.
“Who is that?”
Her father whispered:
“The man who actually controls the Solmere Empire.”
Charlotte stared at the photograph.
Then the tape recorder clicked.
A voice began to play.
Her mother's voice.
Terrified.
“If Charlotte ever finds this…”
A pause.
“Tell her the truth.”
Charlotte leaned closer.
Her mother's next words were barely audible.
“Adrian isn't the enemy.”
Charlotte's eyes widened.
“He's the only person who knows where the real owner is.”
The recording crackled.
Then came the final sentence.
And Charlotte realized the conspiracy was far larger than she had imagined.
“The man controlling Solmere…”
May you like
Her mother's voice trembled.
“…is Charlotte's grandfather.”
