Chapter 12 — The Boardroom Betrayal

Chapter 12 — The Boardroom Betrayal
The boardroom had never felt so small.
Charlotte stood at the center of the long marble table, staring at the woman she had called Mother for her entire life.
The recording still played in her mind.
Evelyn is not the woman you think she is.
Arthur stood near the doors.
Nathan was frozen beside the window.
Adrian had one hand resting on the table.
Vivian was crying silently.
And Lily clung to Charlotte's sleeve.
Nobody dared speak.
Finally, Charlotte looked at Evelyn.
“Tell me.”
Evelyn swallowed.
“Charlotte…”
“No.”
Charlotte's voice was quiet.
“Not another lie.”
Evelyn nodded.
“Then I'll tell you everything.”
Before she could continue, the doors opened.
The board entered.
All twelve directors.
Behind them came lawyers, security officers, and representatives of the shareholders.
At the center was Julian.
He smiled.
“Perfect.”
Charlotte turned.
“What do you want?”
“The vote.”
“What vote?”
“The one that decides who owns Solmere.”
Charlotte looked at the ownership screen.
Her mother's name still appeared.
EVELYN VALE — CONTROLLING OWNER.
Julian laughed.
“That's what we're here to correct.”
Adrian stepped forward.
“You don't have the authority.”
Julian placed a document on the table.
“I do now.”
Charlotte picked it up.
It was a board resolution.
Twenty-four hours earlier, twelve directors had signed it.
The document declared Evelyn legally incompetent to control the company.
Charlotte's face hardened.
“Who authorized this?”
Julian smiled.
“The board.”
Charlotte looked around the room.
One by one, the directors avoided her eyes.
She understood.
This was the betrayal.
Not one person.
Everyone.
The chairman stood.
“Miss Vale, we strongly recommend that you leave the building.”
Charlotte stared at him.
“You're removing me from my own company?”
“You have no legal authority.”
“My mother owns it.”
“Your mother has been declared incapable of managing the corporation.”
“She hasn't been examined.”
“We have medical documentation.”
Charlotte looked at Evelyn.
“Is this real?”
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.”
Adrian grabbed the document.
“This is forged.”
The chairman frowned.
“Careful.”
Adrian threw it onto the table.
“The physician listed here died six years ago.”
The room went silent.
Julian's smile disappeared.
Adrian continued.
“Whoever prepared this didn't realize the medical license number belongs to a dead man.”
The chairman looked toward Julian.
Julian shrugged.
“An administrative error.”
Charlotte laughed.
“An administrative error that determines control of a billion-dollar empire?”
Nobody answered.
Then another director stood.
“Miss Vale, whether the document is authentic or not, the board has lost confidence in your family.”
Charlotte looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because Solmere has been unstable for years.”
“Because someone made it unstable.”
He didn't respond.
Charlotte looked at the board.
“Who has been stealing from the company?”
Silence.
“Who created shell corporations?”
Silence.
“Who forged my signature?”
Silence.
“Who declared me dead?”
Still silence.
Charlotte placed both hands on the table.
“You know.”
Her voice became colder.
“And you're all afraid.”
Julian stepped forward.
“Enough.”
Charlotte looked at him.
“You want control.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I can save Solmere.”
“You mean control it.”
“Yes.”
“Like Arthur?”
Julian smiled.
“Better.”
Charlotte shook her head.
“You're no different.”
Julian's expression hardened.
“I am exactly what your family created.”
He looked at Nathan.
“You were given everything.”
Then at Charlotte.
“You were protected.”
Then at Evelyn.
“You were trusted.”
His voice became bitter.
“I was erased.”
Charlotte studied him.
“So this is revenge.”
“This is justice.”
“No.”
She stepped closer.
“Justice doesn't require destroying innocent people.”
Julian laughed.
“You still think innocence matters.”
Then he snapped his fingers.
A screen descended from the ceiling.
A video began.
Charlotte watched herself.
Three years earlier.
The night of the crash.
She was sitting inside a car.
Alive.
Terrified.
A man stood beside the driver's door.
Julian.
Charlotte's breathing stopped.
The video continued.
Julian opened the door.
“Get out.”
Young Charlotte screamed.
“Who are you?”
Julian grabbed her.
Then the video ended.
Charlotte turned.
“You.”
Julian didn't deny it.
“You took me.”
“Yes.”
“You caused the crash.”
“Yes.”
Nathan lunged forward.
Adrian stopped him.
Charlotte stared at Julian.
“Why?”
“Because I needed leverage.”
“Against whom?”
Julian looked at Evelyn.
“Her.”
Evelyn's face went pale.
“You were going to kill Charlotte.”
“No.”
“You kidnapped her.”
“To force you to surrender the company.”
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
“You promised you wouldn't hurt her.”
“I didn't.”
“Then who attacked the car?”
Julian hesitated.
Charlotte noticed.
“Who?”
Julian looked away.
Charlotte repeated:
“Who?”
Finally he answered.
“Arthur.”
Charlotte's blood ran cold.
“He ordered the crash.”
“Yes.”
“And you?”
“I was supposed to take you.”
“To where?”
“A safe house.”
Charlotte stared.
“But the car crashed.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Arthur changed the instructions.”
Adrian stepped forward.
“He ordered the driver to kill her.”
Julian looked at him.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn't you stop it?”
“I did.”
Charlotte looked at Adrian.
“You pulled me from the car.”
“Yes.”
Everything came together.
The night she disappeared.
The crash.
The false death.
The three years.
All of it.
Charlotte looked at Julian.
“You were trying to save me.”
Julian shook his head.
“Don't romanticize it.”
“You didn't want me dead.”
“No.”
“You wanted my mother to surrender.”
“Yes.”
“But when Arthur ordered my death…”
“I disobeyed him.”
Charlotte stared.
“So you betrayed Arthur.”
“Yes.”
“And then everyone thought you were dead.”
Julian smiled bitterly.
“Exactly.”
The boardroom doors suddenly locked.
The chairman looked toward the security panel.
“What's happening?”
Adrian checked his phone.
“The building has gone into lockdown.”
Julian frowned.
“I didn't order that.”
Everyone looked at Arthur.
He smiled.
“Of course not.”
Charlotte's stomach tightened.
Arthur had remained strangely quiet.
Now he stepped forward.
“You've all been fighting over Solmere.”
He looked around the room.
“None of you understand.”
Charlotte stared.
“Understand what?”
“Solmere was never the prize.”
He pressed a button.
The main screen changed.
A massive financial network appeared.
Thousands of names.
Companies.
Governments.
Private accounts.
Arthur pointed to the center.
“The empire is only one node.”
Charlotte stepped closer.
“What are the others?”
“Banks.”
“Energy companies.”
“Media companies.”
“Political organizations.”
“Private security firms.”
Charlotte stared.
“You built a global network.”
Arthur smiled.
“Your mother wanted to destroy it.”
Evelyn stepped forward.
“And I did.”
Arthur laughed.
“You tried.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
She pointed at the screen.
“Look again.”
Arthur's smile disappeared.
The network began turning red.
One company after another.
Accounts frozen.
Ownership transferred.
Directors removed.
Charlotte watched.
“What is happening?”
Adrian looked at the data.
“She's dismantling the network.”
Arthur stared at Evelyn.
“You couldn't.”
Evelyn smiled.
“I already did.”
The board erupted.
Directors shouted.
Lawyers demanded explanations.
Phones rang.
Security officers received conflicting orders.
Charlotte looked at her mother.
“How?”
Evelyn stepped toward the center screen.
“I spent three years preparing.”
“You knew this would happen.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Arthur would come for Solmere.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Julian would return.”
“Yes.”
“You knew I would come back.”
Evelyn looked at Charlotte.
“I hoped.”
Charlotte shook her head.
“You planned my entire life.”
“No.”
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
“I tried to leave you one choice.”
“What choice?”
“To walk away.”
Charlotte stared.
“And if I didn't?”
“Then I would give you the truth.”
The chairman suddenly grabbed the emergency phone.
“Security!”
Nothing happened.
He tried again.
Nothing.
Adrian smiled.
“The security system isn't yours anymore.”
The chairman looked horrified.
“Whose is it?”
Adrian looked at Charlotte.
“Hers.”
Charlotte frowned.
“What?”
Adrian pointed toward the ownership console.
“Your mother transferred control.”
“When?”
“Three years ago.”
Charlotte stared.
Evelyn nodded.
“The moment you disappeared.”
“Why?”
“Because I knew Arthur would try to seize Solmere.”
“So you transferred it to me?”
“Yes.”
“But I was declared dead.”
“Exactly.”
Charlotte understood.
The company had technically been hers for three years.
Arthur had only controlled the visible structure.
The legal ownership had been hidden.
The entire board had been operating on a lie.
Julian stared at the documents.
“No.”
Adrian smiled.
“You lost.”
Julian's face hardened.
“Not yet.”
He pulled a gun.
Everyone froze.
He pointed it at Charlotte.
Nathan moved immediately.
Julian shouted:
“Stay back!”
Charlotte stared at the weapon.
“Why?”
“Because if I can't control Solmere…”
His hand trembled.
“…no one will.”
Charlotte looked into his eyes.
“That's not justice.”
Julian's face twisted.
“Don't tell me about justice.”
“You were erased.”
“Yes.”
“You were betrayed.”
“Yes.”
“You were used.”
“Yes.”
“But you're becoming exactly like them.”
Julian's breathing became unsteady.
Arthur smiled.
“Do it.”
Charlotte looked at Arthur.
He wanted it.
He wanted blood.
He wanted everyone divided.
Charlotte suddenly understood.
Arthur didn't need to control the company anymore.
He only needed them to destroy each other.
She stepped toward Julian.
Nathan shouted:
“Charlotte!”
She raised one hand.
“It's okay.”
Julian's gun remained pointed at her.
“You're not afraid.”
“I am.”
“Then why are you moving?”
“Because you're not going to shoot me.”
“How do you know?”
“Because if you wanted me dead…”
She stopped a few feet away.
“You would have done it three years ago.”
Julian's eyes filled with tears.
Charlotte continued.
“You don't want to kill me.”
“You want someone to admit you mattered.”
Julian's gun lowered slightly.
Arthur's face changed.
“No.”
Julian looked at him.
“You erased me.”
Arthur's voice hardened.
“You were weak.”
Julian laughed.
“And you created me.”
He lowered the gun.
Security rushed forward.
Julian didn't resist.
The boardroom fell silent.
Charlotte looked at Arthur.
“You're finished.”
Arthur smiled.
“You think this ends with my arrest?”
“Yes.”
“No.”
He looked toward Evelyn.
“Ask her.”
Charlotte turned.
Evelyn looked devastated.
“Mom?”
Arthur smiled.
“She knows.”
“What?”
Arthur pointed at Evelyn.
“Ask her who Charlotte's biological mother really is.”
Charlotte's blood ran cold.
“She's my mother.”
Arthur laughed.
“No.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Charlotte stared.
“Mom?”
Evelyn whispered:
“I wanted to tell you.”
“Tell me what?”
“You aren't my biological daughter.”
Charlotte stopped breathing.
Arthur smiled.
“You never were.”
The room fell silent.
Charlotte stared at Evelyn.
“Then who is?”
Evelyn began to cry.
“Your mother was Rebecca.”
Charlotte's heart stopped.
The missing daughter.
The woman everyone believed was dead.
Rebecca Vale.
Arthur's firstborn.
Charlotte looked at Lily.
Lily was crying too.
Arthur spoke softly.
“Rebecca was your real mother.”
Charlotte's world collapsed.
“And Evelyn?”
Arthur smiled.
“Evelyn was the woman who raised you.”
Charlotte turned toward Evelyn.
Her voice broke.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“For how long?”
“Since the day you were born.”
Charlotte stepped backward.
All the pieces.
The hidden identity.
The false death.
The secret sister.
The fake mother.
The recordings.
The board.
The empire.
None of it was what she believed.
Then the lights suddenly flickered.
A final screen appeared.
A woman's face filled it.
Charlotte recognized her immediately.
Older.
Alive.
Terrified.
Rebecca.
Charlotte's biological mother.
The woman everyone said had disappeared decades ago.
Rebecca looked directly into the camera.
“Charlotte.”
Charlotte stopped breathing.
Rebecca whispered:
“If you're seeing this, then Arthur has finally told you the truth.”
A pause.
“But he's lying about one thing.”
Charlotte stared.
Rebecca continued:
“I wasn't the one who disappeared.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I was the one who was kidnapped.”
Then the screen went black.
And beneath it appeared one final message:
REBECCA VALE — LOCATION CONFIRMED.
SOLMERE UNDERGROUND LEVEL 9.
Charlotte looked toward the floor.
May you like
There was no Level 9.
At least, there wasn't supposed to be.
