CHAPTER 3: A MOTHER'S BETRAYAL

CHAPTER 3: A MOTHER'S BETRAYAL

The ballroom had witnessed betrayal before.

A stolen ring.

A false accusation.

A carefully planned humiliation.

But nothing prepared anyone for this.

Not even Amelia.

Because there was a difference between being betrayed by someone who pretended to love you...

And being betrayed by someone who taught you what love was.

Her mother.

Elena Carter.

The woman who had held her hand through childhood.

The woman who had comforted her after every heartbreak.

The woman who had told her:

"Family is the only thing you can always trust."

Now her own voice filled the ballroom.

And every word destroyed another piece of Amelia's reality.

The video continued playing.

Elena sat across from Daniel in a quiet restaurant.

The recording was old.

Five years old.

Before the wedding.

Before the promises.

Before Amelia ever believed Daniel was the man she would spend her life with.

Elena looked calm.

Almost emotionless.

"If you want Amelia to give you everything..."

She paused.

"You cannot rush her."

Daniel leaned forward.

"What do you mean?"

Elena smiled.

"You have to become the person she needs."

The ballroom remained silent.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Daniel's younger self asked:

"How long?"

Elena answered without hesitation.

"As long as necessary."

Amelia felt a wave of nausea.

Five years.

Five years of pretending.

Five years of lies.

Five years of someone building a fake love story around her.

On the screen, Daniel looked uncertain.

"She trusts me."

Elena nodded.

"Good."

"But she loves me."

A small smile appeared on Elena's face.

"That is even better."

The sentence made Amelia's blood run cold.

Because her mother had not sounded angry.

She had not sounded desperate.

She had sounded proud.

Proud of destroying her own daughter.

The video changed.

A different conversation appeared.

This time inside the Carter family home.

Elena was sitting with Daniel and Margaret.

A large folder was placed on the table.

The same folder Amelia had seen before.

Her inheritance.

Her company shares.

Her father's assets.

Everything she owned.

Everything she had spent years building.

Elena opened the folder.

"After Amelia's marriage, control becomes easier."

Margaret asked:

"And you are certain she won't suspect?"

Elena laughed softly.

"My daughter has one weakness."

Daniel looked curious.

"What weakness?"

Elena answered:

"She believes people are good."

The words hurt more than any insult.

Because they were true.

Amelia had believed in people.

She had believed in love.

She had believed family meant safety.

And those beliefs had been used against her.

The video suddenly stopped.

The ballroom remained frozen.

Then Amelia spoke.

Quietly.

"Why?"

Everyone looked at her.

Not Daniel.

Not her mother.

Her eyes were fixed on Elena.

The woman standing near the back of the room.

Elena looked smaller now.

The confidence she had shown in the video was gone.

"Amelia..."

"No."

Amelia shook her head.

"Don't say my name like you still have the right."

The room became uncomfortable.

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

"I can explain."

Amelia smiled bitterly.

"Everyone keeps saying that tonight."

Daniel.

Her mother.

Everyone who destroyed her.

Everyone who lied.

Everyone who thought an explanation could repair years of betrayal.

Amelia walked toward her mother.

The guests stepped aside.

For the first time that night, nobody stopped her.

"Did you ever love me?"

The question was simple.

But it carried years of pain.

Elena's lips trembled.

"Of course I loved you."

"Then why?"

Silence.

"Why did you give my husband instructions to destroy me?"

Elena looked down.

And that was the answer.

Amelia closed her eyes.

A single tear escaped.

Not because she was weak.

Because she was grieving.

She was grieving the mother she thought she had.

Daniel suddenly stepped forward.

"Elena wasn't supposed to be involved this much."

Everyone turned.

Amelia looked at him.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel hesitated.

Margaret immediately looked angry.

"Daniel, stop."

But it was too late.

The room had already heard.

Amelia's voice became colder.

"What are you hiding now?"

Daniel looked at the flash drive.

Then at Elena.

Then back at Amelia.

"You think I planned everything."

A pause.

"I did."

Nobody expected him to admit it.

"But I wasn't the one who started it."

Amelia stared at him.

"Then who did?"

Daniel looked toward Elena.

"Your mother."

Elena immediately shook her head.

"No."

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"You told me about her father's company."

"You told me about the inheritance."

"You told me Amelia was the key."

The guests looked between them.

The situation was becoming more complicated.

Because the betrayal was no longer just a husband's crime.

It was a family conspiracy.

Daniel continued.

"Five years ago, I was struggling."

He looked at Amelia.

"I had debts."

"I was losing everything."

Amelia said nothing.

"I met your mother."

The room waited.

"She offered me a deal."

Elena's face turned pale.

Daniel continued.

"She said if I married you, gained control of your assets, and helped her remove you from power..."

A pause.

"She would pay me."

A wave of disgust moved through the ballroom.

Amelia stared at Elena.

Her own mother had paid someone to enter her life.

To make her fall in love.

To become her husband.

But then Daniel said something unexpected.

"But I changed."

Amelia looked at him.

"What?"

Daniel lowered his head.

"At first, it was fake."

His voice became quieter.

"But then I actually fell in love with you."

Nobody expected those words.

Not even Amelia.

Daniel looked at her.

"Somewhere along the way, you stopped being a target."

"Then what happened?"

Amelia asked.

"Why did you still do this?"

Daniel closed his eyes.

Because that was the question.

The question that mattered.

"If you loved me..."

"Why?"

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Then he said:

"Because I was trapped."

A new file suddenly appeared on the screen.

Everyone turned.

Another hidden recording.

This one was not from Daniel's investigation.

It was from Elena's personal files.

The title appeared:

LEVERAGE.

Daniel looked at the screen.

And his face changed.

"No..."

The video opened.

Elena's voice appeared.

But this time, she wasn't speaking to Daniel.

She was speaking to someone else.

A man.

A powerful man.

A man Amelia had never seen before.

The stranger placed a document on the table.

"Once Amelia signs, everything belongs to us."

Elena nodded.

"And Daniel?"

The man smiled.

"He is replaceable."

Amelia stared.

Because there was something strange.

Daniel was not the mastermind.

He was not even the final enemy.

He was only another piece on the board.

The man on the screen leaned closer.

"After we take control..."

A pause.

"Amelia Carter will have nothing left."

The video ended.

The ballroom lights came back on.

Nobody spoke.

Then the security system displayed one final message.

UNKNOWN SUBJECT IDENTIFIED:

VICTOR HALE.

Daniel's father.

The man who had been missing from the entire night.

The man who had never appeared in any recording.

Until now.

Amelia slowly turned toward Daniel.

"Who is Victor Hale?"

Daniel looked at her.

And for the first time...

He looked afraid for her.

Not afraid of losing everything.

Afraid because Amelia was finally seeing the real enemy.

"The man who destroyed my family."

May you like

A pause.

"And the man who is trying to destroy yours."
