CHAPTER 5: THE MAN BEHIND DANIEL

CHAPTER 5: THE MAN BEHIND DANIEL

The photograph remained frozen on the giant screen.

A man standing beside Victor Hale.

A man Amelia had not seen in fifteen years.

A man whose name appeared beneath the image.

THOMAS REED.

The ballroom was silent.

But this silence was different.

The silence before had been filled with shock.

Pain.

Betrayal.

Now it was filled with fear.

Because Amelia knew that name.

Everyone in her family knew that name.

Thomas Reed had been her father's closest business partner.

The man who had built Carter Enterprises alongside her father.

The man who had disappeared after a massive financial scandal.

The man everyone believed had abandoned everything and fled.

Including Amelia.

She stared at the photograph.

"No..."

The word escaped her lips.

Daniel looked at her.

"You know him?"

Amelia slowly turned.

"You don't?"

Daniel's expression changed.

"No."

She looked back at the screen.

"Thomas Reed was my father's best friend."

A pause.

"Before he betrayed him."

The room listened.

For the first time that night, Amelia was not just a victim.

She was the person who knew the history behind the war.

Fifteen years earlier.

Before Amelia inherited anything.

Before she became the CEO of Carter Enterprises.

Before she understood how dangerous the business world could be.

Her father, Richard Carter, and Thomas Reed had been unstoppable.

Two men who started with nothing.

Two men who built an empire together.

People called them brothers.

Not partners.

Brothers.

But then everything changed.

A financial collapse nearly destroyed Carter Enterprises.

Millions disappeared.

Documents were forged.

Accounts were manipulated.

And all evidence pointed toward one person.

Thomas Reed.

Amelia remembered that night.

She was sixteen.

She remembered her father sitting alone in his office.

The lights were off.

The man who had always seemed invincible looked broken.

She remembered asking:

"Dad, what's wrong?"

And he had smiled.

A fake smile.

The kind adults used when they didn't want children to see their pain.

"Nothing, sweetheart."

But it was never nothing.

The next morning, Thomas Reed disappeared.

And Amelia's father never spoke his name again.

Until now.

The security officer looked at Daniel.

"You said Victor Hale destroyed your family."

Daniel nodded.

"He did."

"Explain."

Daniel remained quiet.

Amelia watched him.

Waiting.

Because she was tired of discovering pieces of the truth one by one.

She wanted everything.

Now.

Daniel finally spoke.

"My father worked with Thomas Reed."

The guests exchanged looks.

Daniel continued.

"Years ago, Victor helped Thomas hide the money from the Carter scandal."

Amelia's eyes widened.

"Wait."

She looked at him.

"You mean..."

Daniel nodded.

"The scandal that destroyed my father's reputation was not caused by Thomas alone."

A pause.

"Victor was involved."

The ballroom erupted.

Because suddenly the story changed.

Thomas Reed was not just a thief.

Victor Hale was not just a powerful businessman.

They were connected.

And Amelia's family had been targeted long before Daniel ever entered her life.

Daniel continued.

"My father knew something about Richard Carter."

Amelia frowned.

"What?"

"Your father discovered what they were doing."

The room became quiet.

"What were they doing?"

Daniel looked at the screen.

"Stealing from companies."

"Creating fake debts."

"Destroying competitors."

"Buying companies after forcing them into bankruptcy."

Amelia felt her stomach tighten.

Her father had not just been betrayed.

He had discovered a criminal operation.

And because he discovered it...

They destroyed him.

The screen suddenly changed.

A new recording appeared.

This time, it was Victor Hale.

Older.

Cold.

Sitting in an office.

Across from him was Thomas Reed.

Victor spoke first.

"Richard knows too much."

Thomas looked nervous.

"He has evidence."

Victor leaned back.

"Then take away his credibility."

Thomas hesitated.

"And if that doesn't work?"

Victor smiled.

"Then take away everything else."

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Because the meaning was clear.

Amelia's father's downfall had been planned.

Not a mistake.

Not a misunderstanding.

A deliberate attack.

And now Amelia understood.

The reason they wanted her company.

The reason they wanted control.

The reason they needed her powerless.

Because she might find the evidence her father left behind.

Daniel looked at her.

"There is something else."

Amelia's expression hardened.

"Another secret?"

He looked ashamed.

"Yes."

She almost laughed.

"Of course."

Daniel accepted the anger in her voice.

"I found out six months ago."

"About Victor?"

Daniel nodded.

"About everything."

Amelia stared at him.

"And you still married me?"

The question destroyed him.

"I thought I could fix it."

"You thought?"

Her voice rose.

"You thought you could manipulate the people who were manipulating you?"

Daniel lowered his head.

"I thought if I stayed close to Victor, I could find proof."

"And instead?"

Silence.

"Instead, I became exactly like him."

The honesty hurt.

Because Amelia hated that a part of her still recognized the man she loved.

The man who used to make her coffee every morning.

The man who held her hand during doctor's appointments.

The man who talked about their child's future.

But love did not erase betrayal.

And betrayal did not disappear because someone felt guilty.

Suddenly, one of the investigators interrupted.

"Mrs. Carter."

Everyone turned.

"We found another file."

Amelia looked exhausted.

"What now?"

The investigator hesitated.

"This one is different."

"How?"

"It was created before your relationship with Daniel began."

The screen displayed:

PROJECT AMELIA.

Everyone froze.

The investigator opened the file.

Inside were photographs.

Amelia leaving work.

Amelia meeting friends.

Amelia visiting her father’s grave.

Amelia at her company.

Someone had been watching her.

Long before Daniel.

Long before the wedding.

The next page appeared.

TARGET PROFILE:

AMELIA CARTER.

AGE: 21.

STATUS:

HEIR TO CARTER ENTERPRISES.

VULNERABILITIES:

TRUSTING.

FAMILY-ORIENTED.

EMOTIONALLY ATTACHED.

Amelia stared.

They had studied her.

Not as a person.

As a target.

Then the final document appeared.

ASSIGNED AGENT:

DANIEL HALE.

Date assigned:

Five years ago.

Amelia stopped breathing.

Daniel closed his eyes.

The room exploded with whispers.

Because now the truth was even worse.

Daniel had not accidentally entered her life.

He had been sent there.

Amelia slowly turned toward him.

"Five years."

Daniel didn't respond.

"You were assigned to me five years ago."

"Yes."

The answer was quiet.

Honest.

And devastating.

"Every moment?"

Daniel swallowed.

"At first."

"At first?"

She laughed painfully.

"So some of it was real?"

Daniel looked at her.

"Yes."

"How am I supposed to know which parts?"

He had no answer.

Because there was no answer.

Then the screen suddenly went black.

A final message appeared.

INCOMING MESSAGE.

The security system received a live transmission.

Everyone looked upward.

A man's face appeared.

Older.

Confident.

Cold.

Victor Hale.

For the first time, the mastermind behind everything appeared.

He looked directly at Amelia.

Not Daniel.

Not the investigators.

Only Amelia.

"Congratulations."

His voice echoed through the ballroom.

"You finally found the truth."

Amelia stared at the screen.

Victor smiled.

"But you made one mistake."

A pause.

"You thought Daniel was the enemy."

The room became silent.

Victor leaned closer.

"Daniel was only the door."

Another pause.

"I am the person standing behind it."

The transmission ended.

And Amelia realized something terrifying.

The wedding disaster was not a plan to steal her fortune.

It was a plan to uncover something.

Something hidden.

Something her father had protected until his death.

And Victor Hale was willing to destroy anyone...

May you like

Including his own son...

To find it.
