CHAPTER 8: THE BABY THEY WANTED TO CONTROL

CHAPTER 8: THE BABY THEY WANTED TO CONTROL

The ballroom had already witnessed enough betrayal to destroy any ordinary person.

A husband who lied.

A mother who manipulated.

A family that planned a woman's downfall.

But the newest revelation was different.

Because this time...

They were not trying to take Amelia's money.

They were not trying to take her company.

They were trying to take her child.

The words remained on the screen.

EMERGENCY GUARDIANSHIP REQUEST.

The document that had been prepared before the wedding.

The document designed to remove Amelia's rights as a mother.

Everyone stared at it.

Even the people who had helped create the plan looked uncomfortable.

Because there was a line nobody wanted to cross.

Money could be stolen.

Companies could be taken.

Reputations could be destroyed.

But using an unborn child as a weapon was something far darker.

Amelia placed her hand over her stomach.

Her baby.

The only innocent person in this entire nightmare.

A child who had done nothing except exist.

And yet, before even being born...

People had already created a plan to control its future.

Her eyes moved toward Daniel.

The question was impossible to avoid.

"Did you know?"

Daniel looked at her.

The pain on his face appeared immediately.

"Amelia..."

"Did you know?"

Her voice was stronger this time.

Daniel remained silent.

And silence was enough.

A wave of anger moved through the room.

The guests who had watched her humiliation earlier now looked at Daniel differently.

Because they finally understood.

The ring accusation was cruel.

But the custody plan was calculated.

They had planned her emotional destruction.

They had planned to make her look unstable.

They had planned to use the consequences of their own attack against her.

Daniel finally spoke.

"I knew there was a legal strategy."

Amelia's expression changed.

"A strategy?"

He swallowed.

"I didn't know they would actually file it."

She stared at him.

"You knew they were preparing to take my baby."

"I thought I could stop it."

The answer made her laugh.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

"You thought."

She shook her head.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

"You thought you could fix it."

"You thought you could protect me."

"You thought you were different."

A pause.

"But every time you thought..."

Her voice cracked.

"I was the one who suffered."

Daniel looked down.

Because there was nothing he could say.

Every excuse sounded smaller than the damage.

The investigator opened another file.

"This petition was not just prepared."

Everyone looked at him.

"It was supported by evidence."

Amelia frowned.

"What evidence?"

The investigator hesitated.

"False evidence."

The screen displayed several documents.

Medical reports.

Psychological evaluations.

Statements from witnesses.

All claiming Amelia was emotionally unstable.

Unable to make decisions.

Unable to care for a child.

Amelia felt sick.

"They fabricated my medical records?"

The investigator nodded.

"Yes."

Another file opened.

A recording.

The voice belonged to Margaret.

"Once the baby is born, Amelia will be exhausted."

A pause.

"People will believe she cannot handle the pressure."

Another voice responded.

"Then the court will appoint temporary guardianship."

Margaret continued:

"Daniel will have control."

The recording stopped.

The room was silent.

Daniel looked at his mother.

"You were going to take my child too?"

Margaret did not answer.

That answer was enough.

For years, Daniel had believed his family wanted success.

Power.

Money.

But now he saw the truth.

They did not care about anything except control.

Not even him.

Not even his child.

Amelia looked at Margaret.

"I want to understand something."

Margaret slowly looked up.

"Why?"

The question was quiet.

"Why did you hate me so much?"

Margaret's face changed.

For the first time, she seemed tired.

Not evil.

Just broken.

"My family lost everything because of people like your father."

Amelia frowned.

"My father?"

Margaret laughed bitterly.

"You think Richard Carter was innocent?"

The room changed instantly.

Because that was the first time someone had questioned Amelia's father.

Margaret continued.

"Your father destroyed people too."

Amelia shook her head.

"No."

"You never knew everything."

The words hit harder.

Because everyone had secrets.

Everyone.

Margaret looked toward the screen.

"Victor told us the Carter family ruined his life."

Daniel interrupted.

"Mother, Victor lied."

Margaret looked at him.

"You still don't understand."

A pause.

"He lied to everyone."

The investigator stepped forward.

"We found something."

Everyone turned.

Another file appeared.

This one was not from Victor.

Not from Daniel.

Not from Elena.

It was from Richard Carter.

Amelia's father.

The title appeared:

MESSAGE FOR MY DAUGHTER.

Amelia's breathing became unsteady.

Another message from her father.

Another piece of the truth.

The video opened.

Richard Carter appeared.

Older.

Tired.

But still the father she remembered.

"Amelia."

His voice alone almost broke her.

"If you are watching this..."

He paused.

"Then they came for you."

Amelia covered her mouth.

Her father continued.

"I need you to understand something."

"I made mistakes."

The room became silent.

"I trusted the wrong people."

"I believed loyalty could protect me."

A sad smile appeared.

"I was wrong."

Richard looked directly into the camera.

"But there is one thing I never regretted."

A pause.

"Having you."

Amelia's eyes filled with tears.

The first genuine tears of the night.

"I know people will try to tell you who I was."

"Some will say I was a villain."

"Some will say I was a victim."

"The truth is more complicated."

He continued:

"Power changes people."

"And fear changes people."

"But my greatest mistake..."

He lowered his head.

"Was believing I could keep you away from this world forever."

The video showed a document.

Richard continued:

"I created the Carter Archive because I knew someone would eventually come after what I built."

"But the archive is not just evidence."

"It contains the truth about everyone involved."

A new file appeared.

ARCHIVE SECTION ONE: THE BEGINNING.

Amelia stared.

The investigator tried opening it.

ACCESS DENIED.

"Why?"

The investigator looked confused.

"Because it requires a second authorization."

"What second authorization?"

Nobody answered.

Then the system displayed a message.

SECOND KEY HOLDER REQUIRED.

Everyone froze.

Amelia looked at the screen.

"Who?"

The answer appeared.

A name.

DANIEL HALE.

The entire ballroom turned toward him.

Amelia's expression changed.

"No."

Daniel looked shocked.

"I didn't know."

The investigator checked again.

"The system recognizes you."

Daniel stepped closer.

"That's impossible."

But the evidence was there.

The Carter Archive required two people.

Amelia.

And Daniel.

The meaning was terrifying.

Her father had known Daniel would enter her life.

He had known the Hale family would come.

And somehow...

He had still chosen Daniel as part of the protection system.

Why?

Amelia looked at Daniel.

"Did my father trust you?"

Daniel shook his head.

"I don't know."

"Then why are you the key?"

Daniel had no answer.

Suddenly, Daniel's phone rang.

Everyone looked at him.

He hesitated.

The caller ID appeared.

UNKNOWN NUMBER.

The investigator signaled.

"Answer it."

Daniel slowly picked up.

A distorted voice spoke.

"Congratulations, Daniel."

Daniel's face turned pale.

"Victor."

Everyone froze.

The voice continued:

"You finally became useful."

Daniel gripped the phone.

"What do you want?"

A quiet laugh.

"Your wife."

Amelia's expression hardened.

The voice continued:

"Bring Amelia to the archive."

"Or you will never learn why your father chose you."

The call ended.

Nobody spoke.

Daniel looked at Amelia.

For the first time that night...

He wasn't looking at her like a target.

He wasn't looking at her like a wife.

He was looking at her like someone he needed to protect.

But Amelia had learned one painful lesson.

Protection could be another form of control.

She stepped back.

"No."

Daniel looked at her.

"What?"

"I am not going anywhere with you."

"Amelia, listen..."

"No."

Her eyes were cold.

"You lost the right to decide my safety."

The screen suddenly flashed again.

A new message appeared.

ARCHIVE LOCATION CONFIRMED.

Below it:

ACCESS WINDOW: 24 HOURS.

Amelia looked at the countdown.

Twenty-four hours.

That was all they had.

Twenty-four hours before Victor Hale reached the archive.

Twenty-four hours before the final secret of her father's legacy was exposed.

May you like

And somewhere inside that archive...

Was the truth about why Daniel Hale was chosen.
