Chapter 12 — The Family Behind the Hospital

Chapter 12 — The Family Behind the Hospital

The news spread before sunrise.

By six in the morning, every television in the city was showing the same footage.

Catherine Blackwell entering the hospital.

Catherine using Dr. Shaw's access card.

Catherine standing outside Emily's maternity room.

And beneath the footage, a headline repeated over and over:

BLACKWELL FAMILY ACCUSED OF MANIPULATING MEDICAL RECORDS

Emily watched from the small television in her mother's house.

She expected to feel relieved.

Instead, she felt afraid.

Because the more the Blackwells collapsed, the more desperate they became.

Raymond stood behind her.

“They're going to retaliate.”

Emily nodded.

“I know.”

Adrian sat nearby, staring at the screen.

“They won't retaliate against the hospital.”

Emily looked at him.

“Then who?”

He answered quietly.

“You.”

The front door opened.

Daniel walked inside.

His face was pale.

“It's happening.”

Raymond turned.

“What?”

“My mother is calling everyone.”

“Who?”

“Lawyers. Politicians. Hospital trustees.”

Daniel dropped a phone onto the table.

“She wants to declare Emily medically unstable.”

Emily stared.

“Why?”

“To invalidate your decisions.”

Raymond's expression hardened.

“On what grounds?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Pregnancy complications.”

Emily laughed bitterly.

“I've never had a complication.”

“I know.”

“Then they'll create one.”

Daniel nodded.

“That is exactly what she's trying to do.”

Adrian stood.

“How?”

Daniel looked at him.

“She has people inside the hospital.”

Raymond shook his head.

“We removed them.”

Daniel's expression darkened.

“No.”

He pointed toward the television.

“You removed the people you knew about.”

Silence.

“My family has been connected to that hospital for forty years.”

Raymond stared at him.

“Explain.”

Daniel sat down.

“My grandfather founded the medical foundation.”

Raymond's eyes narrowed.

“What foundation?”

“The Blackwell-Mercer Medical Foundation.”

Emily turned.

“Mercer?”

Daniel nodded.

“That's why your mother's records were stored there.”

Adrian frowned.

“You told me the hospital was independent.”

“It is.”

Daniel looked at Raymond.

“Legally.”

Raymond understood.

“Financially?”

“Not even close.”

Daniel continued.

“My family owns several buildings around the hospital.”

“Through shell companies?”

“Yes.”

“Doctors?”

“Some.”

“Nurses?”

“Some.”

“Administrators?”

Daniel nodded.

“Most of them don't even know who they work for.”

Emily felt cold.

“So when Catherine changed my records…”

“She didn't break into the system.”

Daniel looked at her.

“She used the system.”

Raymond immediately called the hospital security director.

“Lock down every restricted floor.”

A voice answered.

“Already done.”

“Who has access?”

“We're reviewing it.”

“Review faster.”

The line went silent.

Then the director said:

“Sir.”

“What?”

“There is something you need to see.”

They returned to the hospital under armed protection.

The building looked normal from outside.

Too normal.

Patients entered through the main doors.

Visitors stood at reception.

Doctors walked through the lobby.

Nobody looked frightened.

But Emily knew better.

She had learned that danger didn't always look dangerous.

Sometimes it wore a white coat.

Sometimes it carried a clipboard.

Sometimes it smiled.

They entered the security room.

The director pulled up a file.

“This is the hospital's ownership structure.”

Raymond stared.

Emily looked over his shoulder.

Companies.

Trusts.

Foundations.

Holding corporations.

Names she didn't recognize.

Then she saw one name.

Blackwell Medical Holdings.

Emily's stomach dropped.

“They own thirty-eight percent.”

Raymond nodded.

“Indirectly.”

“That's enough to control the board.”

“Yes.”

Adrian pointed at another line.

“What's this?”

The director zoomed in.

Mercer Legacy Foundation — 12%.

Emily stared.

“My mother.”

“Yes.”

“But I thought she lost everything.”

Raymond shook his head.

“She didn't.”

“Then why did she live like she had nothing?”

“Because she was hiding the ownership.”

Emily looked at the screen.

“So my mother secretly owned part of this hospital.”

“Correct.”

“And Catherine wanted control of it.”

Raymond nodded.

“That is why she needed you.”

Emily's face hardened.

“Not just because of my baby.”

“No.”

Raymond pointed to the trust documents.

“Because once you are recognized as the Mercer heir, you control the twelve percent.”

Emily understood.

“That gives me voting power.”

“Yes.”

“And if I combine it with the other shares…”

“You could remove the Blackwell trustees.”

Daniel whispered:

“That's why my mother is terrified of you.”

A hospital administrator entered.

He was sweating.

“Mr. Raymond.”

“What?”

“We found something.”

He placed a folder on the table.

Emily recognized the logo.

Blackwell Medical Foundation.

“What is that?”

The administrator looked at Daniel.

“I don't know how to explain it.”

“Try.”

“There were patient transfers.”

“Transfers?”

“Children.”

Emily's blood went cold.

“What kind of children?”

“Newborns.”

Silence.

Raymond opened the folder.

There were dates.

Hospital numbers.

Birth certificates.

Transfer orders.

Dozens.

Some records had the same notation.

IDENTITY CORRECTION.

Emily stared.

“How many?”

The administrator whispered:

“Twenty-seven.”

Adrian's expression hardened.

“Twenty-seven children?”

“Yes.”

“Where did they go?”

“We don't know.”

Emily looked at Daniel.

His face had gone white.

“This is what my mother was hiding.”

Daniel nodded.

“Probably.”

Raymond turned the page.

One name appeared.

ANNA MERCER.

Beside it:

INFANT TRANSFER — PRIVATE FACILITY.

Emily stopped breathing.

“That was me.”

Raymond nodded.

“Yes.”

The administrator looked confused.

“Then who was the other baby?”

Emily looked at him.

“What?”

“The transfer order says two infants were involved.”

Raymond looked up sharply.

“Two?”

The administrator nodded.

“Your mother gave birth to one baby.”

He turned the page.

“But the hospital received two.”

Nobody spoke.

Emily felt dizzy.

“Two babies?”

“Yes.”

“One was me?”

“According to the record.”

“And the other?”

The administrator shook his head.

“Unknown.”

Daniel whispered:

“That's impossible.”

Raymond looked at him.

“Not anymore.”

Adrian stared at the documents.

“The boy in the footage.”

Everyone turned.

Adrian continued.

“The man who looks like Daniel.”

Emily's heart began racing.

“You think…”

“He may have been the other child.”

Daniel stared at the papers.

“No.”

Adrian looked at him.

“Your mother said you were an only child.”

Daniel nodded.

“What if that was another lie?”

A phone rang.

Raymond answered.

“Raymond.”

A voice came through.

“Sir, we found the doctor.”

“Which doctor?”

“Dr. Vincent Shaw.”

“Where?”

“He's at a private clinic.”

“Send security.”

A pause.

“There's a problem.”

“What?”

“He isn't alone.”

“Who is with him?”

The officer hesitated.

Then:

“Catherine Blackwell.”

Raymond's expression hardened.

“Don't approach.”

“Sir?”

“Wait for me.”

They arrived twenty minutes later.

The clinic was abandoned.

The front door stood open.

Lights flickered inside.

Raymond entered first.

Adrian followed.

Emily remained in the armored vehicle.

Daniel stayed with her.

Inside the clinic, they found Dr. Shaw tied to a chair.

Alive.

Barely conscious.

Raymond cut the restraints.

“Where is Catherine?”

Shaw coughed.

“She left.”

“When?”

“Five minutes ago.”

“Where?”

Shaw looked terrified.

“I don't know.”

Adrian grabbed his shoulder.

“Tell me where.”

“She said she had to finish something.”

“What?”

Shaw looked at him.

“The baby.”

Emily heard the commotion through the vehicle radio.

She immediately opened the door.

Daniel grabbed her.

“No.”

“She has my baby.”

“We don't know that.”

“I heard him.”

Daniel stared at her.

“What?”

Emily pointed toward the clinic.

“I heard the doctor say baby.”

Daniel's face changed.

“Stay here.”

“No.”

“Emily.”

“My child is in there.”

Daniel looked toward the building.

Then at her.

“Then I'll go.”

Emily stared.

“You're coming with me?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Because if my mother is inside, she may try to use me.”

Emily looked at him.

“And?”

“I don't want to be used anymore.”

They entered the clinic.

The hallway was empty.

Daniel stopped at a door.

“Here.”

Emily looked at him.

“How do you know?”

“I remember this place.”

“What?”

“My mother brought me here when I was a child.”

Emily stared.

“What happened?”

Daniel touched the door.

“I don't remember.”

Then something clicked inside his mind.

“A white room.”

Emily frowned.

“What?”

“I remember a white room.”

He closed his eyes.

“A baby crying.”

Emily's blood ran cold.

“Daniel.”

“I remember someone saying…”

He opened his eyes.

“Take the boy.”

Emily stared.

“Boy?”

Daniel looked horrified.

“I was here.”

The door opened.

Inside was an old medical archive.

Boxes covered the floor.

Photographs.

Records.

Birth certificates.

Daniel walked slowly through the room.

Then stopped.

A photograph lay on the desk.

Two newborn babies.

One wrapped in pink.

One wrapped in blue.

Emily picked it up.

On the back:

MERCER TWINS — CONFIDENTIAL.

She stared.

“Twins.”

Daniel looked at the photograph.

“My God.”

Raymond entered.

He saw the photograph.

His expression changed.

“Anna never had twins.”

Adrian walked in behind him.

“Apparently she did.”

Emily looked at Adrian.

“Why didn't anyone tell me?”

He shook his head.

“I didn't know.”

Raymond looked at the birth records.

“Your mother gave birth to two children.”

Emily stared at the blue blanket.

“Where is he?”

Nobody answered.

Daniel suddenly pointed toward a record.

“Here.”

The file listed:

INFANT B — TRANSFERRED TO BLACKWELL PRIVATE FACILITY.

Emily's eyes widened.

“That's him.”

Adrian took the file.

The child's name had been removed.

Only one designation remained.

SUBJECT B.

Raymond whispered:

“They didn't raise him as family.”

Emily understood.

“They raised him as an asset.”

Daniel looked sick.

“Or a weapon.”

A noise came from the hallway.

Everyone turned.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Deliberate.

A man appeared in the doorway.

Daniel stared at him.

The man's face was almost identical to his.

Same eyes.

Same jaw.

Same scar across the left eyebrow.

Emily stopped breathing.

The man smiled.

“Hello, brother.”

Daniel whispered:

“Who are you?”

The man looked at Emily.

Then at her stomach.

“My name is Michael.”

He smiled.

“And I'm the reason your mother spent twenty-eight years hiding the truth.”

Emily stepped back.

“Are you my brother?”

Michael nodded.

“Your twin.”

Daniel stared.

“How?”

Michael laughed softly.

“You were the child they wanted.”

He looked at Emily.

“I was the child they kept.”

Michael took one step forward.

Raymond raised his weapon.

“Stop.”

Michael stopped.

“You don't understand.”

Emily stared.

“Then explain.”

Michael's smile disappeared.

“I wasn't born to inherit the Mercer fortune.”

“Then why?”

“To protect it.”

“How?”

Michael looked toward the old records.

“By becoming what the Blackwells needed.”

Daniel whispered:

“A spy.”

Michael nodded.

“I spent twenty-eight years inside their family.”

Emily's eyes widened.

“Then why expose them now?”

Michael looked at her.

“Because Catherine made one mistake.”

“What?”

“She tried to take your baby.”

Emily's hand tightened over her stomach.

Michael's voice became cold.

“She doesn't understand something.”

“What?”

He looked directly at Emily.

“The baby isn't the key.”

Raymond frowned.

“Then what is?”

Michael smiled.

“You.”

Silence.

Emily stared.

“Me?”

Michael nodded.

“Your blood opens the trust.”

“That's what we've been told.”

“No.”

He stepped closer.

“Your blood does more than open it.”

“What does it do?”

Michael looked at Daniel.

Then at Adrian.

Finally at Emily.

“It identifies the person who can destroy the Blackwell empire.”

Emily swallowed.

“Who?”

Michael smiled.

“You.”

May you like

Then every light in the clinic went out.

And in the darkness, a single gunshot echoed.
