Chapter 11 — The Security Footage

Chapter 11 — The Security Footage
The security room was three floors beneath the hospital.
No windows.
No phones.
No visitors.
Only rows of monitors showing every corridor, elevator, entrance, and restricted room in the building.
Raymond stood in the center of it all.
Emily sat beside Adrian.
Daniel stood across from them.
Nobody had spoken for nearly a minute.
The photograph remained on the table.
HE KNOWS WHO THE FATHER IS.
Emily finally broke the silence.
“Play the footage.”
Raymond looked at the security director.
“From when?”
“The night my medical records were changed.”
The director nodded.
“We've already pulled everything.”
“Then show me.”
The largest monitor flickered.
A timestamp appeared.
02:13 A.M.
The maternity corridor was empty.
At first, nothing happened.
Then a woman entered the frame.
Emily leaned forward.
“That’s her.”
Catherine Blackwell.
She was wearing a dark coat.
Walking calmly.
Not hiding.
Not rushing.
As though she belonged there.
Raymond's jaw tightened.
“She used an executive access card.”
“Whose?”
The director checked the system.
“Dr. Vincent Shaw.”
Emily stared.
“The doctor who was supposed to perform the procedure.”
“Yes.”
Raymond looked at Daniel.
“Your family prepared this.”
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
The footage continued.
Catherine entered the medical records room.
Six minutes later, another person arrived.
Emily's breathing stopped.
“Daniel.”
He stepped closer.
“That isn't me.”
Emily looked at him.
“It looks like you.”
“I wasn't there.”
The figure turned slightly.
The camera captured his face.
Emily froze.
Adrian stepped toward the screen.
“That isn't Daniel.”
Raymond narrowed his eyes.
“Who is it?”
Adrian whispered:
“His brother.”
Daniel's face went white.
“I don't have a brother.”
Nobody moved.
Emily looked at him.
“You don't?”
Daniel shook his head.
“My mother told me I was an only child.”
Adrian stared at the screen.
“He has your face.”
Daniel walked closer.
The footage showed the man entering the records room.
He used Daniel's access code.
Then he looked directly at the camera.
He smiled.
Emily felt a chill run through her.
“He knew he was being recorded.”
Raymond nodded.
“That's deliberate.”
The man held up a small black device.
Then the footage cut to static.
The director frowned.
“That's strange.”
“What?”
“The cameras were disabled for forty-seven seconds.”
“By whom?”
“We don't know.”
Raymond looked at the screen.
“Restore the missing footage.”
“We're trying.”
“Try harder.”
Eight minutes later, the screen flickered.
A new image appeared.
The records room.
The mysterious man stood beside a computer.
Catherine entered.
They spoke.
There was no audio.
The director enhanced the video.
Emily watched their lips.
The man said something.
Catherine responded.
Then he pointed toward the maternity files.
Catherine shook her head.
The man became angry.
He grabbed her wrist.
Emily gasped.
“Who is he?”
Daniel stared.
“I don't know.”
Adrian shook his head.
“Yes, you do.”
Daniel looked at him.
“What?”
Adrian pointed at the man's left hand.
A scar ran across the knuckles.
“Your father had that scar.”
Daniel froze.
“My father died when I was twelve.”
Adrian nodded.
“That's what your mother told everyone.”
Daniel's face went blank.
“She lied.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because your father wasn't dead.”
Silence.
Daniel stared at the screen.
“Then who is that?”
Adrian answered:
“Richard Blackwell.”
Emily looked at Daniel.
“Your father is alive?”
Daniel nodded slowly.
“I thought he was dead.”
Raymond looked at the security director.
“Find him.”
The director began typing.
“There's no current record.”
“Of course there isn't.”
“Where do we start?”
Adrian pointed at the screen.
“Follow the money.”
They spent the next hour tracing transactions connected to Richard Blackwell.
Every account had been closed.
Every property had been transferred.
Every company listed him as deceased.
But one payment remained.
A monthly transfer.
Small.
Consistent.
Sent to a private medical facility.
Emily stared at the address.
“What is that?”
Raymond answered:
“A psychiatric hospital.”
Daniel shook his head.
“My father isn't sick.”
Adrian looked at him.
“Maybe that's why they put him there.”
They drove to the facility under heavy security.
Emily stayed in the armored vehicle.
Adrian sat beside her.
Daniel sat across from them.
Nobody spoke.
Finally Daniel whispered:
“If he's alive…”
Emily looked at him.
“What?”
“If my father is alive, then everything my mother told me was a lie.”
Adrian nodded.
“Not everything.”
Daniel looked at him.
“What do you mean?”
“Your mother probably told you exactly what she needed you to believe.”
Daniel looked away.
Emily watched him.
For the first time, she realized something.
Daniel wasn't just the man who had betrayed her.
He was another victim of the same family.
That didn't excuse what he'd done.
But it explained why he looked so broken.
The psychiatric facility was surrounded by trees.
A nurse met them at the entrance.
“Mr. Raymond.”
“Richard Blackwell.”
The nurse's expression changed.
“You know him?”
“I need to see him.”
“He has restricted visitation.”
“I'm his legal representative.”
She hesitated.
Then nodded.
“Follow me.”
They entered a quiet hallway.
At the end was a locked room.
The nurse opened it.
A man sat beside the window.
Older.
Thinner.
Gray-haired.
He turned slowly.
His eyes landed on Daniel.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he whispered:
“My son.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
“Dad?”
Richard stood.
His knees nearly gave out.
Daniel caught him.
Richard stared at his face.
“You look like me.”
Daniel's voice broke.
“I thought you were dead.”
Richard closed his eyes.
“I was.”
“What?”
“Not physically.”
He looked toward Raymond.
“Your mother killed the man I used to be.”
Emily entered.
Richard looked at her.
His expression changed.
“Anna's daughter.”
Emily swallowed.
“You knew my mother?”
Richard nodded.
“I loved her.”
Adrian's face hardened.
Richard noticed.
“And you.”
Adrian stepped forward.
“You betrayed her.”
Richard lowered his eyes.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Catherine had Daniel.”
Daniel froze.
Richard continued.
“She threatened to kill him.”
“I was twelve.”
“Yes.”
“You abandoned me.”
“I was trying to keep you alive.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You let me believe you were dead.”
“I thought that was safer.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“You all thought hiding was protection.”
Adrian looked at him.
“I know.”
Daniel stared.
“You do.”
Richard sat down.
“I need to tell you what happened.”
Everyone gathered around.
“Your mother discovered the Mercer evidence.”
Emily listened.
“She found documents proving the Blackwells had manipulated succession records for decades.”
Raymond nodded.
Richard continued.
“She planned to expose them.”
“What happened?”
“Catherine found out.”
“And?”
“She ordered me to stop Anna.”
Richard looked at Emily.
“I refused.”
“So she threatened Daniel.”
“Yes.”
“And you betrayed my mother.”
Richard nodded.
“I told Catherine where Anna was.”
Emily's face hardened.
“Then what?”
Richard's voice trembled.
“I went back.”
“When?”
“The night you were born.”
Emily froze.
“You were there?”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
“Anna had already disappeared.”
Adrian looked shocked.
“What?”
Richard nodded.
“She left the hospital with you.”
Adrian stared.
“I was told she died.”
“She didn't.”
Emily's heart pounded.
“Where did she go?”
Richard looked at her.
“To the house.”
Emily whispered:
“My mother's house.”
“Yes.”
“Then why did everyone say she died?”
Richard's face became pale.
“Because Catherine needed her dead.”
Emily stepped closer.
“What happened to her?”
Richard hesitated.
“She wasn't killed.”
Emily's breath caught.
“She survived?”
“For several months.”
Adrian looked at Richard.
“You're saying Anna was alive?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I was being watched.”
“You could have contacted me.”
“I tried.”
“When?”
Richard looked toward Daniel.
“Through him.”
Daniel's face changed.
“I don't remember.”
“You were twelve.”
Richard's eyes filled.
“I left you a message.”
“What message?”
“Tell Adrian to find the green door.”
Daniel stared.
“I never gave it to him.”
Richard closed his eyes.
“Catherine stopped you.”
Emily felt dizzy.
“The green door.”
Adrian looked at her.
“The house.”
“Yes.”
“But there was no green door.”
Richard shook his head.
“Not the front door.”
Emily frowned.
“Then where?”
Richard looked at Raymond.
“Basement.”
Raymond immediately stood.
“There was a sealed room.”
Adrian nodded.
“We never found the entrance.”
Richard smiled sadly.
“Because you were looking for a door.”
“What should we have looked for?”
“A wall.”
Back at the house, they went straight to the basement.
Richard's instructions were precise.
“Three stones left of the fireplace.”
Raymond counted.
“Here.”
He pushed.
Nothing.
“Try again.”
The stone moved.
A hidden mechanism clicked.
The wall opened.
Emily stared.
Behind it was a small room.
Inside was a desk.
A chair.
A camera.
And dozens of videotapes.
Adrian stepped inside.
“Anna.”
He picked up the first tape.
Emily touched his arm.
“Play it.”
They found an old television.
Raymond connected the equipment.
The screen flickered.
Anna appeared.
Emily covered her mouth.
Her mother looked tired.
But alive.
“If you're watching this, then someone finally found the room.”
Emily began crying.
Anna looked directly into the camera.
“I don't know how much time I have.”
Adrian stood frozen.
Anna smiled faintly.
“Adrian, if you're there…”
His eyes filled.
“I am sorry.”
She continued.
“I never wanted you to believe I left you.”
Adrian whispered:
“Anna.”
“She will tell you that I betrayed you.”
Anna's expression hardened.
“She will tell you that I died.”
A pause.
“She will lie.”
Emily stepped closer.
Anna looked into the camera.
“Because Catherine isn't afraid of the Mercer fortune.”
“She is afraid of the evidence.”
The video paused.
Then resumed.
Anna held up a file.
“This contains every name.”
“Every payment.”
“Every false medical record.”
“Every child whose identity was changed.”
Emily stared.
The hospital.
The records.
The babies.
Everything.
Anna continued.
“And there is one final document.”
She looked frightened.
“The document that proves who controls the Mercer trust.”
She lowered her voice.
“If Catherine gets it, she controls everything.”
“If Emily gets it, the Blackwell empire ends.”
The video stopped.
Then another began automatically.
This one was shorter.
Anna was crying.
“Emily, if you're watching this…”
She smiled.
“I hope you know I loved you.”
Emily fell to her knees.
Adrian caught her.
Anna continued.
“You were never a mistake.”
“You were never a burden.”
“You were the reason I survived.”
Emily cried harder.
Then Anna said the words that changed everything.
“And your father never abandoned you.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
“He was trying to save you.”
The screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
Daniel suddenly noticed another file.
He picked it up.
“What's this?”
Raymond took it.
A medical record.
He opened it.
His face changed.
“It's a paternity test.”
Emily looked at him.
“From when?”
“Twenty-eight years ago.”
Adrian stepped forward.
“Open it.”
Raymond read.
“Anna Mercer.”
“Adrian Moretti.”
“Biological child.”
Emily's heart stopped.
Then Raymond turned the page.
His expression changed again.
“What?”
Emily stepped closer.
“What does it say?”
Raymond whispered:
“The baby wasn't born at the hospital listed in the record.”
Emily froze.
“Then where?”
He read the final line.
“Private Mercer facility.”
Adrian looked at Richard.
“You knew.”
Richard nodded.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because the child wasn't supposed to survive.”
Emily stared.
“What?”
Richard looked at her.
“Catherine ordered the doctor to falsify the records.”
Daniel whispered:
“Why?”
Richard answered:
“Because she believed the baby carried the final Mercer marker.”
Emily touched her stomach.
“The same marker my baby has?”
Richard nodded.
“Yes.”
Emily looked down.
For the first time, she understood.
The child inside her wasn't simply an heir.
It was proof.
Proof that the Mercer bloodline had survived.
Proof that the Blackwell succession was built on lies.
And proof that the woman who had spent months trying to control her had been afraid of one thing above all else.
The truth.
The security director suddenly ran into the room.
“Mr. Raymond!”
“What?”
“We have a problem.”
“What now?”
He held up a tablet.
“The hospital footage was leaked.”
“To whom?”
“Every major news outlet.”
Emily froze.
“What footage?”
“The footage of Catherine entering the medical records room.”
Raymond stared.
“Who leaked it?”
The director shook his head.
“We don't know.”
Then another alert appeared.
LIVE NEWS — BLACKWELL FAMILY MEDICAL FRAUD EXPOSED.
Daniel stared at the screen.
“My mother is finished.”
Adrian shook his head.
“No.”
Everyone looked at him.
“This is only the beginning.”
“Why?”
“Because whoever leaked the footage wants the Blackwells exposed.”
Raymond nodded.
“And they want Emily protected.”
Emily frowned.
“Who would do that?”
Adrian looked at the final security image.
A shadowed figure stood outside the hospital.
The same figure from the footage.
The man with Daniel's face.
Adrian whispered:
“Your brother.”
Daniel shook his head.
“I don't have a brother.”
Adrian looked at him.
“You do.”
He pointed at the screen.
“And now we need to find out why he wants your family destroyed.”
Emily looked toward the dark forest beyond the house.
The truth was no longer hiding.
It was coming toward them.
And somewhere in the city, a man who looked exactly like Daniel Blackwell had just released the first piece of evidence capable of bringing down an empire.
But he hadn't revealed his identity.
Not yet.
May you like
Because he was waiting for one thing.
For Emily to discover exactly who he was.
