Chapter 8 — The Man Waiting Outside the Hospital

Chapter 8 — The Man Waiting Outside the Hospital

The hospital had become a trap.

That was the first thing Raymond understood when the emergency lights came back on.

The second was worse.

Someone outside already knew they were trying to escape.

“Which exit?” Raymond asked.

The security director checked his tablet.

“North entrance is compromised.”

“South?”

“Unknown.”

“Parking garage?”

“Blocked.”

Raymond looked at Daniel.

“You said your family was coming.”

Daniel nodded.

“They'll seal the obvious exits first.”

Adrian stood beside Emily.

“Then we don't use an obvious exit.”

Raymond looked at him.

“What do you suggest?”

“The loading dock.”

The security director shook his head.

“That's three floors below us.”

“Exactly.”

Raymond nodded.

“Move.”

They reached the service corridor just as the first gunshot echoed through the hospital.

Emily froze.

Daniel grabbed her hand.

“Don't stop.”

She pulled away.

“Don't touch me.”

Daniel released her immediately.

“I'm sorry.”

Raymond raised his hand.

Everyone stopped.

Another gunshot.

Then shouting.

Security officers were moving through the opposite corridor.

“They're inside,” Raymond said.

Adrian looked at Emily.

“Stay close.”

She nodded.

For the first time, she didn't question him.

Not because she trusted him completely.

But because something in his voice told her he had done this before.

Survived before.

Run before.

Lost people before.

And he wasn't about to lose her.

They reached the stairwell.

The elevator was no longer safe.

Raymond opened the door.

“Down.”

They started descending.

One floor.

Two.

Three.

Emily's breathing became heavier.

The baby moved.

She pressed a hand against her stomach.

Adrian noticed.

“Are you okay?”

“Yes.”

“Pain?”

“No.”

“Dizziness?”

“No.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Do you need to stop?”

She glared.

“I said I'm fine.”

He nodded.

“Okay.”

Raymond glanced back.

“Save the arguments for when we're alive.”

They continued.

At the fourth-floor landing, a door suddenly opened.

A man stepped through.

Everyone froze.

He was wearing a hospital maintenance uniform.

His hands were raised.

“Don't shoot.”

Raymond immediately drew his weapon.

“Who are you?”

“Maintenance.”

“Name.”

“Thomas.”

“Last name.”

The man hesitated.

Raymond's expression hardened.

“Last name.”

“Thomas Reed.”

Daniel suddenly went pale.

“That's not maintenance.”

Raymond looked at him.

“What?”

“He works for my mother.”

The man's face changed.

He reached inside his jacket.

Adrian moved first.

He slammed the man's arm against the wall.

A weapon fell to the floor.

Security tackled him.

Raymond stared at Daniel.

“How did you know?”

Daniel swallowed.

“I've seen him before.”

“Where?”

“My mother's private estate.”

Emily looked at him.

“How many people does your family have inside this hospital?”

Daniel shook his head.

“I don't know.”

Raymond looked at him coldly.

“Find out.”

They finally reached the loading dock.

The metal doors opened.

Cold air hit Emily's face.

For one second, freedom seemed close.

Then Adrian stopped.

“Wait.”

Raymond looked at him.

“What?”

Adrian pointed toward the street.

A black SUV was parked across from the entrance.

Engine running.

Lights off.

Nobody moved inside.

Raymond narrowed his eyes.

“How long has it been there?”

The security officer checked.

“Forty minutes.”

Daniel's face went pale.

“That isn't my mother's car.”

Raymond looked at him.

“Then whose?”

Daniel stared through the glass.

“I don't know.”

Adrian whispered:

“I do.”

Emily turned.

“Who?”

Adrian's expression became unreadable.

“Someone who has been waiting for me.”

The SUV door opened.

A man stepped out.

He was tall.

Gray-haired.

Wearing a dark coat.

He didn't carry a weapon.

He simply stood there.

Waiting.

Adrian went completely still.

Raymond looked at him.

“Who is that?”

Adrian didn't answer.

Emily stepped closer.

“Dad?”

Adrian finally spoke.

“His name is Marcus Vale.”

Daniel frowned.

“Vale?”

Adrian nodded.

“He was my partner.”

Raymond's eyes narrowed.

“You had a partner?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you mention him?”

“Because I thought he was dead.”

The man across the street smiled.

Then raised one hand.

Not a weapon.

A photograph.

Emily couldn't see it clearly.

Marcus held it up.

Then turned it around.

The image faced them.

Adrian's expression collapsed.

Emily stared.

Even from a distance, she recognized the woman.

Her mother.

Anna.

Standing beside Adrian.

And between them was a baby.

Emily.

Adrian walked toward the glass.

Marcus remained still.

Raymond grabbed Adrian's arm.

“Don't.”

Adrian looked at him.

“He has proof.”

“Of what?”

“My life before I disappeared.”

Emily stared at the photograph.

“Go.”

Raymond turned toward her.

“What?”

“Let him come.”

Adrian shook his head.

“No.”

Emily looked at him.

“He knows something.”

“So do I.”

“You've kept secrets from me.”

Adrian flinched.

“Emily…”

“I need the truth.”

Raymond looked at the man outside.

Then at Emily.

“Fine.”

He motioned to security.

“Bring him in.”

Marcus entered the loading dock alone.

He stopped several feet away.

His eyes moved to Adrian.

“You got old.”

Adrian stared.

“You're alive.”

“So are you.”

“I watched them bury you.”

“They buried the wrong man.”

Adrian's jaw tightened.

“You knew where I was.”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“Twenty years.”

Emily stepped forward.

Marcus looked at her.

His expression changed.

“Anna's daughter.”

Emily frowned.

“Everyone keeps calling me that.”

Marcus smiled sadly.

“You look exactly like her.”

“Who are you?”

“Someone who failed your mother.”

Emily's eyes narrowed.

“How?”

Marcus looked at Adrian.

“Tell her.”

Adrian shook his head.

Marcus sighed.

“You still haven't changed.”

“What happened?”

Marcus looked at Emily.

“Your mother trusted me.”

“And?”

“I betrayed her.”

Silence.

Emily felt her stomach tighten.

“How?”

Marcus looked toward the hospital.

“By telling the Blackwells where she was hiding.”

Adrian lunged.

Raymond stopped him.

“You betrayed Anna?”

Marcus didn't defend himself.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“They had my son.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“You had a son?”

Marcus nodded.

“They threatened to kill him.”

Emily stared.

“Is he alive?”

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“No.”

Daniel's expression changed.

Marcus continued.

“They killed him anyway.”

Silence.

“They promised me they'd spare him.”

His voice cracked.

“I believed them.”

Adrian lowered his eyes.

“That was how they controlled all of us.”

Emily looked at Marcus.

“Then why are you here?”

Marcus reached into his coat.

Raymond raised his weapon.

Marcus slowly removed a small envelope.

He handed it to Emily.

“This belongs to you.”

She stared at it.

“What is it?”

“Your mother's final letter.”

Emily's hands shook.

“My father already found one.”

“This is different.”

“How?”

“It was written after she realized Adrian was alive.”

Emily looked at Adrian.

He stared at the envelope.

“I never saw that.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

“Because she gave it to me.”

Adrian's face changed.

“What did she say?”

Marcus looked at him.

“She told me not to give it to you unless you returned.”

Adrian whispered:

“I'm here.”

Marcus nodded.

“That's why I'm here.”

Emily opened the envelope.

Inside was a single sheet.

Her mother's handwriting.

She read silently.

Then her eyes widened.

“What?”

Raymond asked.

Emily handed him the letter.

He read.

His face went pale.

“What does it say?”

Emily's voice trembled.

“My mother knew I was going to inherit the Mercer trust.”

Raymond nodded.

“What else?”

“She knew the Blackwells would come after my child.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“And?”

Emily continued.

“She said there was one person who could stop them.”

Everyone waited.

“Who?”

Emily looked up.

“Me.”

Silence.

Raymond frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“I don't know.”

Marcus spoke.

“She didn't mean you alone.”

Emily turned.

“Then who?”

Marcus looked at Adrian.

“She meant your bloodline.”

Daniel shook his head.

“This doesn't make sense.”

Marcus looked at him.

“You're a Blackwell.”

“So?”

“Your family knows exactly what the Mercer bloodline can do.”

Daniel frowned.

“Do what?”

Marcus smiled.

“Open the original trust.”

Daniel's face changed.

“The trust requires DNA verification.”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“The current trustees are Blackwells.”

“Yes.”

“But the original succession clause allows a direct Mercer descendant to challenge the trustees.”

Raymond suddenly understood.

“That's why they want Emily declared unfit.”

“Yes.”

“Because if Emily challenges them…”

“She could take control.”

Emily stared.

“And my baby?”

Marcus answered.

“Your child is the next direct descendant.”

“So if I die…”

“The baby inherits everything.”

Daniel's voice became quiet.

“And if both die…”

Marcus looked at him.

“The Blackwells take control permanently.”

Emily stepped backward.

“They want me dead.”

“Yes.”

“They've been trying to take my baby.”

“Yes.”

“And the hospital…”

Marcus nodded.

“Was only the beginning.”

A siren sounded outside.

Everyone turned.

Marcus looked toward the street.

“They're here.”

Raymond immediately moved.

“How many?”

“Enough.”

Daniel looked terrified.

“My mother?”

Marcus shook his head.

“No.”

“Then who?”

Marcus looked at Adrian.

“Your old enemy.”

Adrian's expression changed.

“Dimitri?”

Marcus nodded.

“Dimitri Blackwell.”

Daniel stared.

“There's no Dimitri Blackwell.”

Marcus smiled.

“That's what they wanted everyone to believe.”

Raymond looked confused.

“Who is he?”

Marcus answered:

“The real head of the family.”

The loading dock doors suddenly shook.

Someone was trying to force them open.

Security officers raised their weapons.

Emily stood behind Raymond.

Adrian moved beside her.

Daniel looked at the door.

“That's him.”

Emily looked at him.

“You've met him?”

Daniel nodded.

“Once.”

“What did he look like?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Old.”

“Anything else?”

“He had one eye.”

Adrian's face hardened.

“Dimitri.”

The door shook again.

Then a voice came through.

“Adrian.”

Everyone froze.

The voice was calm.

Almost gentle.

“Twenty years.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“Dimitri.”

The man outside laughed.

“You were always difficult to kill.”

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

“You should have tried harder.”

Dimitri laughed again.

“I don't need to kill you.”

“Then what do you want?”

“The girl.”

Emily's blood ran cold.

Dimitri continued.

“She belongs to us.”

Adrian answered:

“She belongs to herself.”

Silence.

Then Dimitri said:

“No.”

His voice became colder.

“She belongs to the bloodline.”

Raymond looked at Emily.

“Get her out.”

Daniel nodded.

“Where?”

Marcus pointed toward a hidden passage.

“There.”

Raymond frowned.

“Where does it go?”

“To the old underground rail.”

Raymond stared.

“This hospital has an underground rail?”

“Built during the war.”

“Where does it lead?”

Marcus looked at Emily.

“To Anna's house.”

Emily froze.

“My mother's house?”

“Yes.”

Adrian looked at Marcus.

“You knew about it.”

“I helped build the entrance.”

Raymond immediately understood.

“Move.”

They ran.

Emily was between Adrian and Raymond.

Daniel followed behind.

Marcus stayed at the rear.

The passage was narrow and dark.

Emily's breathing became faster.

“Are we safe?”

Adrian answered:

“Not yet.”

“Will we ever be?”

He looked at her.

“Yes.”

She stared.

“You sound certain.”

“I spent twenty-eight years believing the wrong thing.”

“What?”

“That hiding you would keep you safe.”

He took her hand.

“I won't make that mistake again.”

Behind them, the loading dock doors finally broke.

Dimitri's men flooded inside.

Security fired.

The corridor erupted with noise.

Marcus closed the steel gate.

“Go!”

They ran deeper underground.

Emily looked back once.

Marcus stood alone at the gate.

“Come with us!”

He shook his head.

“Someone has to slow them down.”

Adrian stopped.

“Marcus.”

His old friend looked at him.

“Take care of her.”

Adrian nodded.

“I will.”

Marcus smiled.

“Then I finally did one thing right.”

The gate slammed shut.

Emily heard the first impact from the other side.

Then another.

Then gunfire.

She covered her ears.

Adrian pulled her close.

“Don't look back.”

They reached the end of the tunnel.

A steel door waited.

Daniel entered a code.

The lock clicked.

The door opened.

Emily stepped outside.

She froze.

A small house stood beyond the trees.

Old.

Weathered.

Hidden beneath thick branches.

She recognized it immediately.

Not from memory.

From photographs.

Her mother's house.

Anna's secret home.

The place where her mother had lived during the final months of her pregnancy.

Emily walked toward it slowly.

Adrian followed.

“She brought me here once,” he said.

“When?”

“Before I disappeared.”

“What happened?”

“She told me if anything happened to her, this house would protect you.”

Emily looked at the door.

“Then why didn't anyone find it?”

Adrian smiled sadly.

“Because your mother trusted people nobody else noticed.”

He reached into his coat.

Removed a key.

And handed it to Emily.

She stared.

“Where did you get this?”

“Your mother gave it to me.”

“When?”

“Twenty-eight years ago.”

Emily inserted the key.

The lock turned.

The door opened.

Dust floated through the sunlight.

A piano stood in the corner.

Old photographs covered the walls.

Emily walked inside.

Then stopped.

There, above the fireplace, was a photograph.

Her mother.

Adrian.

And a newborn Emily.

Her father was holding her.

He was smiling.

Emily stared at the image.

Then looked at Adrian.

“You were there.”

“Yes.”

“You held me.”

“Yes.”

“Why don't I remember?”

“You were three days old.”

Emily laughed through her tears.

“I hate you.”

Adrian smiled sadly.

“I know.”

“I don't.”

“I know.”

She looked at the photograph again.

Then, slowly, she reached for his hand.

Adrian looked down.

Emily whispered:

“Don't disappear again.”

His eyes filled.

“I won't.”

Behind them, Daniel stood in silence.

Raymond entered last.

He looked around the room.

Then noticed something on the desk.

A sealed envelope.

His name was written on it.

He picked it up.

The handwriting was Anna's.

Raymond opened it.

Inside were six words.

The child is not the inheritance.

Raymond's heart stopped.

He looked at Emily.

Then at Adrian.

He read the next line.

The child is the key.

A final sentence appeared beneath it.

And if they ever find her, they will know where the real fortune is hidden.

Raymond slowly folded the letter.

Emily looked at him.

“What did she write?”

Raymond stared toward the dark hallway of the house.

“I think your mother left us one more secret.”

“What secret?”

Raymond's expression hardened.

“The Blackwells aren't trying to control the trust.”

Emily frowned.

“Then what?”

Raymond looked at the photograph of baby Emily.

“They're trying to find something your mother hid before she died.”

Adrian's face went pale.

“What?”

Raymond whispered:

“The original Mercer fortune.”

Outside, headlights appeared between the trees.

May you like

Someone had followed them.

And this time, there was nowhere left to run.
