Chapter 10 — The Second Recording

Chapter 10 — The Second Recording
For three full seconds, nobody breathed.
The man standing beneath the headlights looked exactly like the photographs of Thomas Harrington.
The same silver hair.
The same narrow face.
The same cold eyes.
The same scar beneath his left ear.
Mark stared at him as if he were looking at a ghost.
“Dad?”
The man smiled.
Not warmly.
Not sadly.
With the quiet satisfaction of someone who had just watched an impossible secret become visible.
Richard Sloan stumbled backward.
“No…”
Adrian Black raised his weapon.
“Don't move.”
Thomas laughed.
“You still point a gun like a frightened boy.”
Adrian's jaw tightened.
“You should have stayed dead.”
Mark stepped forward.
“What happened to you?”
Thomas looked at his son.
“That is the question you should have been asking for fifteen years.”
Hannah stood behind Mark.
Her hands were shaking.
She looked at Thomas.
Then Adrian.
Then Sloan.
Nothing made sense anymore.
Her entire life had been built around a dead man.
Now that man was standing twenty feet away.
Alive.
And everyone else looked terrified of him.
Thomas slowly turned his attention to Hannah.
His expression changed.
For the first time, there was something almost like recognition.
“You look exactly like your mother.”
Hannah swallowed.
“You knew my mother?”
Thomas smiled.
“I knew everything about your mother.”
Adrian stepped forward.
“Don't speak to her.”
Thomas looked at him.
“Still protective.”
“You lost the right to call yourself her father.”
Thomas laughed.
“I never called myself her father.”
Hannah stared at Adrian.
“What does that mean?”
Adrian didn't answer.
Thomas did.
“It means, Hannah, that you've been lied to by every person standing in this room.”
The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
Harris raised his weapon.
“Thomas Harrington, you're under arrest.”
Thomas looked amused.
“For what?”
“Murder. Kidnapping. Conspiracy.”
Thomas smiled.
“Then arrest me.”
Harris hesitated.
Thomas spread his arms.
“Go ahead.”
No one moved.
Because everyone knew the problem.
There was no evidence.
Not yet.
Thomas looked toward Sloan.
“You should have destroyed the archive.”
Sloan's face went pale.
“I tried.”
“You failed.”
“I didn't know Hannah had the key.”
Thomas's eyes moved toward her.
“You were always the key.”
Hannah clenched her fists.
“What did you do to me?”
Thomas's expression softened.
“I saved you.”
“No.”
Her voice grew stronger.
“You erased my life.”
“I protected you.”
“You stole my mother.”
“I protected you.”
“You destroyed my father.”
Thomas looked at Adrian.
“He was never your father.”
Adrian's face darkened.
Thomas continued.
“You want the truth?”
Hannah stared at him.
“Yes.”
“Then stop trusting the people who tell you what you want to hear.”
Mark stepped between them.
“Enough.”
Thomas looked at his son.
“You still protect her.”
Mark frowned.
“Who?”
Thomas smiled.
“You don't even know what you're protecting.”
The Second Recording
Daniel suddenly appeared from the trees.
Everyone turned.
He was carrying a small black case.
Mark looked at him.
“What is that?”
Daniel held it up.
“The second recording.”
Sloan's face collapsed.
Thomas's smile disappeared.
Adrian looked surprised.
“Where did you get it?”
Daniel answered:
“Your father's vault.”
Thomas's eyes narrowed.
“You opened it?”
“No.”
Daniel looked at Hannah.
“She did.”
Hannah frowned.
“I've never been there.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You opened it twenty-three years ago.”
Hannah stared.
“I was a baby.”
“No.”
Daniel looked at Mark.
“Not that vault.”
He opened the case.
Inside was an old cassette recorder.
A red indicator light blinked.
Mark stared.
“What is that?”
Daniel pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then a man's voice.
Thomas.
Younger.
Angrier.
“If Hannah survives, the entire empire falls.”
Hannah covered her mouth.
The recording continued.
“She cannot be allowed to reach the archive.”
Sloan whispered:
“No.”
Then Eleanor's voice appeared.
“You can't kill your own daughter.”
Thomas answered:
“She's not my daughter.”
Everyone froze.
Mark looked at Hannah.
Adrian closed his eyes.
The recording continued.
“Then why are you so afraid of her?”
Thomas answered:
“Because she is Adrian's daughter.”
Hannah looked at Adrian.
He didn't deny it.
The recording ended.
Silence.
Hannah's eyes filled with tears.
“You knew.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I wanted you to have a childhood.”
“You let me believe I had no father.”
“I thought that was safer.”
Hannah laughed bitterly.
“Safer?”
She pointed toward Thomas.
“He's been hunting me my entire life!”
Adrian looked at Thomas.
“And now he can't hide anymore.”
Thomas smiled.
“You think the recording proves anything?”
Daniel stepped forward.
“It proves enough.”
Thomas's expression hardened.
“You don't know what you're doing.”
Daniel smiled.
“I know exactly what I'm doing.”
What Happened Fifteen Years Ago
Mark turned toward Thomas.
“You were declared dead fifteen years ago.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Thomas looked at Sloan.
“Tell him.”
Sloan shook his head.
“No.”
Thomas's voice became cold.
“Tell him.”
Sloan swallowed.
“Thomas disappeared voluntarily.”
Mark stared.
“Why?”
“Because the police were closing in.”
“For what?”
Sloan hesitated.
“Murder.”
Mark's jaw tightened.
“Whose?”
Sloan looked at Adrian.
“Your father's.”
Mark froze.
“What?”
Sloan continued.
“Thomas arranged the death of the former trust administrator.”
Mark shook his head.
“My father was the administrator.”
“No.”
Sloan corrected him.
“Your grandfather was.”
Mark felt the world tilt.
“My grandfather?”
Thomas spoke.
“He discovered what I had done.”
“What did you do?”
Thomas stared at his son.
“I transferred the trust.”
“To yourself?”
“No.”
He looked at Hannah.
“To her.”
Hannah froze.
“What?”
Thomas nodded.
“The trust was supposed to belong to you from the day you were born.”
Mark looked at Sloan.
“Then why was it hidden?”
Sloan answered:
“Because Thomas tried to take it.”
The Real Betrayal
Thomas walked closer.
“You want to know what your father did?”
Mark stared.
“My father is standing right there.”
Thomas smiled.
“Exactly.”
Mark looked confused.
Thomas pointed toward Adrian.
“Adrian Black betrayed me.”
Adrian laughed.
“You stole his company.”
“I built that company.”
“With stolen money.”
“With his money.”
Adrian's expression hardened.
Thomas continued.
“He was weak.”
“No.”
Adrian shook his head.
“You were greedy.”
Thomas looked at Hannah.
“And she is the consequence.”
Hannah stepped forward.
“What happened the night I was born?”
Thomas's expression changed.
For the first time, he looked tired.
“Your mother tried to run.”
“With me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because she discovered the truth.”
“What truth?”
“That I had already signed the trust over to you.”
Hannah stared.
“You signed it?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did you try to destroy it?”
Thomas looked toward the recorder.
“Because someone changed the terms.”
“Who?”
Thomas said nothing.
Daniel answered.
“Victoria.”
Everyone turned.
Thomas's face hardened.
“She altered the final document.”
Mark stared.
“Why?”
Daniel looked at Hannah.
“To make herself the beneficiary.”
Hannah whispered:
“She wanted the trust.”
“Yes.”
“And she used Leo?”
“Yes.”
Mark's fists tightened.
“Where is Victoria now?”
No one answered.
Then a gunshot came from the trees.
Victoria's Escape
Everyone dropped.
Thomas moved first.
He grabbed Sloan and pulled him behind the vehicle.
Adrian fired toward the forest.
Daniel dragged Hannah behind a tree.
Mark shielded Leo.
Harris shouted:
“Stay down!”
Another shot.
Then silence.
Mark looked toward the road.
Victoria was running.
She reached a black SUV.
Mark recognized the driver.
Gabriel.
He started after them.
“Mark!”
Harris grabbed him.
“Don't!”
“That woman has my son!”
“Leo is here!”
Mark stopped.
He looked down.
Leo was still in his arms.
Alive.
Safe.
Mark's breathing slowed.
But Victoria was escaping.
And she wasn't alone.
The Woman in the Back Seat
Inside the SUV, Victoria looked terrified.
Gabriel drove at full speed.
“We have to get out of the state.”
“No.”
“What?”
“Go to the old house.”
Gabriel looked at her.
“Which one?”
“The lake house.”
“Why?”
“Because Hannah will go there.”
Gabriel frowned.
“You think she'll follow?”
“She always does.”
Victoria pulled out a photograph.
It showed Hannah as a baby.
Beside her was Eleanor.
And behind them—
Thomas.
Gabriel stared.
“That's impossible.”
Victoria shook her head.
“No.”
She turned the photograph over.
A message had been written on the back.
THE SECOND RECORDING IS NOT THE FINAL ONE.
Gabriel looked at her.
“What does that mean?”
Victoria's hands trembled.
“It means Thomas lied.”
The Third Voice
Back at the cabin, Daniel restarted the recorder.
Everyone watched.
Mark looked at him.
“Why did you say this was the second recording?”
Daniel didn't answer.
He pressed another button.
A hidden track began.
At first there was only static.
Then Eleanor's voice.
Very softly:
“Thomas is not Hannah's father.”
Hannah closed her eyes.
Mark looked at Adrian.
Adrian looked away.
The recording continued.
“Adrian believes he is.”
Hannah opened her eyes.
“What?”
Eleanor's voice trembled.
“But I have never told either man the truth.”
Daniel stopped the recording.
Hannah stared.
“Why did you stop it?”
“Because the rest is dangerous.”
“No.”
She stepped forward.
“Play it.”
“Hannah—”
“Play it!”
Daniel looked at Mark.
Mark nodded.
Daniel pressed play.
Eleanor continued.
“Hannah's biological father is the only person who can legally activate the original trust.”
Mark's face changed.
The recording continued.
“If he is still alive, he must never be allowed to meet her.”
Hannah whispered:
“Who is he?”
Eleanor answered.
“His name is…”
Static.
The recording distorted.
Everyone leaned closer.
Then the voice returned.
“…Samuel.”
Mark frowned.
“Samuel who?”
The tape clicked.
A final sentence emerged.
“Samuel was the man who taught Thomas how to disappear.”
The recording stopped.
Daniel stared at the machine.
Adrian looked horrified.
Thomas smiled.
Mark saw the expression.
“You know him.”
Thomas said nothing.
Mark stepped closer.
“You know Samuel.”
Thomas finally looked at him.
“Yes.”
“Who is he?”
Thomas's eyes moved toward Hannah.
Then he whispered:
“He's the reason I faked my death.”
The Man in the Cell
Far away, beneath an abandoned courthouse, a steel door opened.
A man sat alone inside a concrete cell.
His hair was gray.
His hands were cuffed.
His face was hidden in shadow.
A guard entered.
“Someone wants to see you.”
The man didn't move.
“Who?”
The guard placed a photograph on the table.
Hannah.
The man looked at it.
For the first time in years, his expression changed.
“She's alive.”
“Yes.”
“Does she know?”
“No.”
The man closed his eyes.
“Then Thomas failed.”
The guard asked:
“Do you want to see her?”
The man shook his head.
“Not yet.”
“Why?”
He looked at Hannah's photograph.
“Because if she learns who I am…”
He paused.
“…she'll hate the wrong person.”
Hannah's Decision
At dawn, Hannah stood alone beside the lake.
Mark approached.
“You should sleep.”
“I can't.”
“I know.”
She looked at the water.
“My whole life is a lie.”
“No.”
She turned.
“You don't know that.”
“I know one thing.”
“What?”
“You're not the lies other people told about you.”
Hannah's eyes filled with tears.
“Then who am I?”
Mark answered:
“You're Hannah.”
She smiled sadly.
“That's not enough anymore.”
“It is to me.”
She looked at him.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Leo appeared behind Mark.
“Aunt Hannah?”
She turned.
Leo held a small cassette.
“I found this.”
Hannah frowned.
“Where?”
“In Grandma's room.”
Mark took it.
“What is it?”
Leo shook his head.
“Mommy said never to let anyone hear it.”
Hannah stared.
“Which mommy?”
Leo looked at her.
“Your mommy.”
Hannah's heart stopped.
Eleanor's final recording.
Mark inserted the cassette.
Static.
Then Eleanor's voice.
“Hannah, if you are hearing this, I am probably dead.”
Hannah closed her eyes.
“There is one truth I could never tell you.”
A pause.
“Your father is alive.”
Hannah looked at Mark.
Eleanor continued:
“But he is not Adrian.”
Everyone went silent.
“He is not Thomas.”
Another pause.
Then:
“He is the man both of them spent their lives trying to destroy.”
The recording crackled.
Eleanor whispered one final name.
“Samuel Black.”
The tape stopped.
Hannah stared at the lake.
Mark's face went pale.
Adrian stood behind them.
He heard the name.
And for the first time since returning from the dead, Adrian Black looked genuinely terrified.
Because Samuel Black was not a stranger.
He was his brother.
And he had been imprisoned for twenty-three years.
For a crime he never committed.
A crime Hannah's existence could finally prove.
Then Mark's phone rang.
One message appeared:
SAMUEL HAS ESCAPED.
A second message followed.
HE IS COMING FOR HANNAH.
May you like
And beneath it:
THIS TIME, NO ONE CAN STOP HIM.
