Chapter 12 — The Truth About Leo’s Mother

Chapter 12 — The Truth About Leo’s Mother

The message on Mark's phone disappeared.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

I KNOW WHERE LEO IS.

The words remained in Mark's mind even after the screen went dark.

Hannah stood beside him.

“Call him.”

Mark immediately dialed the number.

One ring.

Two.

Three.

Then a voice answered.

“Mark.”

Mark recognized it.

“Samuel.”

“Yes.”

“Where's my son?”

A pause.

“Alive.”

Mark closed his eyes.

“Let me speak to him.”

“Not yet.”

“Put Leo on the phone.”

“You're going to have to trust me.”

Mark laughed bitterly.

“Trust has destroyed my family.”

Samuel's voice became quiet.

“Then perhaps it's time you learned who your family really is.”

Mark's grip tightened around the phone.

“What do you want?”

“Nothing.”

“Then why take Leo?”

“I didn't.”

Mark froze.

“What?”

Samuel continued.

“Leo came to me.”

Hannah looked at Mark.

Mark whispered:

“That’s impossible.”

“No.”

Samuel's voice hardened.

“It's the truth.”

“Where is he?”

“You'll find him where your father buried the first lie.”

The line went dead.

The Empty Chair

They returned to the Mercer estate two hours later.

Police had secured the property.

The mansion looked different now.

Not safer.

Smaller.

As if every hidden passage and locked door had lost its power.

Hannah walked into the library.

Leo's chair sat beside the fireplace.

Empty.

She touched the back of it.

“He always sat here.”

Mark stood behind her.

“He'll sit here again.”

Hannah looked at him.

“You believe Samuel?”

“I don't know what I believe.”

“That makes two of us.”

Mark looked toward Eleanor.

She had barely spoken since leaving the courthouse.

Hannah approached her.

“Mom.”

Eleanor looked up.

“You knew Leo's mother.”

Eleanor's face changed.

“Yes.”

“Who was she?”

Eleanor lowered her eyes.

“That's what you're asking me?”

“I've asked you for the truth before.”

“I know.”

“And you still haven't told me everything.”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“You're right.”

Hannah sat opposite her.

“Then tell me now.”

Eleanor's hands trembled.

“Leo's mother is not dead.”

Hannah froze.

Mark looked at Eleanor.

“What?”

Eleanor whispered:

“She has been alive all these years.”

The Woman Behind the Door

A noise came from the hallway.

Everyone turned.

Daniel drew his weapon.

“Stay here.”

He walked toward the door.

Harris followed.

A moment later, Daniel returned.

His face was pale.

“There is someone here.”

Mark stood.

“Who?”

Daniel stepped aside.

A woman entered.

She was wearing a dark coat.

Her hair was pulled back.

She looked exhausted.

But there was something familiar about her eyes.

Mark stared.

He knew her.

Not personally.

From photographs.

From old files.

From the stories Victoria had told.

He whispered:

“Isabella?”

Eleanor began crying.

The woman looked at Mark.

“Yes.”

Mark's voice disappeared.

Isabella Mercer.

His first wife.

Leo's mother.

The woman everyone had told him died in a car accident nine years earlier.

She was alive.

Hannah stared at her.

“You're Leo's mother.”

Isabella nodded.

“Yes.”

Mark couldn't move.

“I saw your coffin.”

“I know.”

“I watched them bury you.”

“It wasn't me.”

“Then who was it?”

Isabella looked at Eleanor.

“Ask her.”

Hannah turned.

“Mom?”

Eleanor couldn't meet her eyes.

The Woman Who Took the Fall

Eleanor finally spoke.

“Isabella was supposed to disappear.”

Mark's face hardened.

“Why?”

“Because Thomas discovered that she knew about the trust.”

Isabella interrupted.

“He discovered more than that.”

“What?”

Isabella looked at Hannah.

“She discovered who Leo really was.”

Mark frowned.

“He's my son.”

“Yes.”

Isabella's voice softened.

“He is your son.”

Then she looked toward Eleanor.

“But he's also the child the trust was created to protect.”

Hannah remembered the recording.

Leo is the final heir.

“Why him?”

Isabella answered:

“Because his bloodline connects every branch of the family.”

Mark stared.

“What bloodline?”

Isabella hesitated.

“Your mother knew.”

Eleanor nodded.

“She did.”

Mark's voice rose.

“Then tell me!”

Eleanor flinched.

“Leo carries Adrian's blood.”

Silence.

Hannah stared at her.

“Adrian?”

Isabella nodded.

“His grandfather.”

Mark shook his head.

“That makes no sense.”

“It does if you know the truth about your father.”

Thomas.

Again.

Always Thomas.

Mark stepped back.

“Leo isn't just my son.”

“No.”

Isabella looked at him.

“He is the living proof that Thomas's entire inheritance claim was false.”

The Night Isabella Disappeared

Mark remembered that night.

Rain.

A phone call.

A police officer at the door.

The words:

Your wife is dead.

He had collapsed.

He had identified a body.

Or what he thought was one.

Isabella sat across from him now.

“You weren't supposed to see me.”

“Why?”

“Because Thomas wanted you broken.”

“Why would he care about Isabella?”

“Because he knew I had the original documents.”

“What documents?”

“The real birth records.”

Mark stared.

“Leo's?”

“Yes.”

“And what did they prove?”

Isabella looked at Hannah.

“That Leo was born under a different name.”

Hannah's stomach tightened.

“What name?”

Isabella whispered:

“Leo Black.”

Mark stared.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“Why would his name be Black?”

“Because Samuel Black was listed as his biological grandfather.”

Mark shook his head.

“That isn't possible.”

Isabella looked at him.

“Samuel is Adrian's brother.”

Mark frowned.

“So?”

Isabella answered:

“And Adrian is not Hannah's biological father.”

Hannah's heart stopped.

Everyone went silent.

The Family Tree

Isabella spread several documents across the table.

“Adrian had a brother.”

“Samuel.”

“Yes.”

“Samuel had a child.”

Isabella looked at Hannah.

“No.”

Hannah's face tightened.

“Then who?”

Isabella pointed to the documents.

“Your grandmother's sister.”

Hannah stared.

“That's impossible.”

“No.”

Isabella continued.

“Your family tree was deliberately altered.”

Mark looked at the papers.

The names connected.

Thomas.

Adrian.

Samuel.

Eleanor.

Margaret.

But one name had been erased.

Isabella pointed to the blank space.

“This person was the original beneficiary.”

“Who?”

Isabella looked at Hannah.

“Clara Black.”

Hannah whispered:

“My great-aunt?”

“Yes.”

“What happened to her?”

“She disappeared.”

“When?”

“Twenty-three years ago.”

The same year Hannah was born.

Hannah's breathing slowed.

“Why?”

“Because she knew where the original trust was hidden.”

Mark looked at Isabella.

“Where?”

She shook her head.

“I don't know.”

“Then why did Samuel say he knows?”

“Because he does.”

“Then why hasn't he told us?”

Isabella looked toward the window.

“Because he's waiting for the right person to ask.”

Hannah understood.

“Me.”

Isabella nodded.

Victoria's Real Motive

Hannah turned toward Isabella.

“Victoria.”

“What about her?”

“Why did she help Thomas?”

Isabella's expression became bitter.

“She believed Thomas could bring back her daughter.”

Hannah frowned.

“Her daughter died.”

“That is what everyone believes.”

Hannah froze.

“She's alive?”

“No.”

Isabella shook her head.

“Victoria had a daughter before Ethan.”

“Then what happened?”

“She was born sick.”

Victoria was desperate.

Thomas promised her access to experimental treatment.

“In exchange for what?”

Isabella answered:

“Leo.”

Mark's expression hardened.

“She wanted my son?”

“Thomas promised that if Victoria delivered Leo to him, he would save her daughter.”

“But the girl died anyway.”

“Yes.”

“And Victoria blamed Thomas?”

“No.”

Isabella looked at Hannah.

“She blamed herself.”

Hannah understood.

That explained the hatred.

The lies.

The obsession.

The desperation.

But there was something Isabella still wasn't saying.

“What happened after her daughter died?”

Isabella looked at Mark.

“Victoria stopped working for Thomas.”

Mark frowned.

“But she still attacked us.”

“Because Thomas threatened her.”

“With what?”

“Her daughter's medical records.”

Hannah shook her head.

“That can't be enough.”

“It was.”

Isabella looked down.

“The records showed that Victoria's daughter wasn't born sick.”

Silence.

“She was poisoned.”

Mark stared.

“By whom?”

Isabella whispered:

“Richard Sloan.”

The Man Who Controlled Everything

Harris immediately stood.

“Sloan.”

Daniel nodded.

“It always comes back to him.”

Mark looked at Isabella.

“Why would Sloan poison a child?”

“Because the child was a witness.”

“To what?”

Isabella's face hardened.

“To Thomas's first murder.”

Mark swallowed.

“Whose murder?”

Isabella looked toward the fireplace.

“Your grandfather's.”

Everything stopped.

Thomas had blamed Adrian.

Adrian had blamed Thomas.

Sloan had blamed everyone.

But the truth was darker.

Sloan had orchestrated the murder.

And a child had seen it.

Victoria's daughter.

“She knew what happened,” Isabella said.

“So Sloan poisoned her.”

“Yes.”

“And Victoria never knew?”

“She learned years later.”

Mark stared.

“That's why she went after Sloan.”

“She did.”

“Then why didn't she expose him?”

“Because Sloan threatened to reveal that Victoria had helped conceal Leo.”

Hannah closed her eyes.

Every person in this family had been trapped by another person's secret.

And Sloan had built the cage.

Leo's Message

A phone rang.

Everyone froze.

It was Isabella's.

She looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

She answered.

“Hello?”

A child's voice came through.

“Mommy?”

Isabella's face collapsed.

“Leo!”

Mark rushed toward her.

“Put him on.”

Isabella handed him the phone.

“Leo?”

“Daddy?”

Mark's eyes filled with tears.

“Where are you?”

“I'm with Uncle Samuel.”

“Are you safe?”

“Yes.”

“Is he hurting you?”

“No.”

Leo paused.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“Uncle Samuel says I have to tell you something.”

“What?”

“He says Grandma didn't die.”

Mark froze.

“Which grandma?”

Leo whispered:

“Grandma Margaret.”

Hannah stared.

Margaret was standing across the room.

She suddenly looked terrified.

Leo continued:

“She came here.”

“Where?”

“She was with Uncle Samuel.”

Mark looked at Margaret.

“You knew.”

Margaret didn't answer.

Hannah stepped toward her.

“Grandma?”

Margaret began to cry.

“I wanted to tell you.”

“But you didn't.”

“I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

Margaret whispered:

“Of the man who has been pretending to be Samuel.”

The room went silent.

Mark looked at the phone.

“Leo?”

No answer.

“Leo!”

The line went dead.

The Wrong Man

Harris immediately began tracing the call.

Daniel looked at Margaret.

“Explain.”

Margaret shook her head.

“I can't.”

Hannah stepped forward.

“You will.”

Margaret looked at her.

“The man who called you is not Samuel.”

Mark's face went pale.

“Then who?”

Margaret whispered:

“Gabriel.”

Everyone froze.

Gabriel.

Victoria's former ally.

The man who had disappeared after the courthouse escape.

The man they thought was working for Victoria.

Hannah suddenly understood.

“Then where is Samuel?”

Margaret's eyes filled with tears.

“Dead.”

Mark stared.

“When?”

“Twenty-three years ago.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“No.”

Margaret looked at him.

“I found him.”

Adrian shook his head.

“That's impossible.”

“I found his body.”

“When?”

“The night Hannah was born.”

Hannah's heart stopped.

“You knew?”

Margaret nodded.

“Yes.”

“Then why did you say he was alive?”

“Because someone wanted us to believe he was.”

Mark's voice became cold.

“Who?”

Margaret looked toward the door.

“Thomas.”

The Real Recording

Daniel suddenly remembered something.

“The cassette.”

He pulled it from his pocket.

“The third track.”

Mark stared.

“You said there were only two.”

“I was wrong.”

Daniel inserted it.

Static.

Then Samuel's voice.

Not the fake voice from the phone.

The real one.

Weak.

Dying.

“If anyone hears this, Thomas has already found me.”

Hannah covered her mouth.

Samuel continued.

“I did not father Hannah.”

Hannah closed her eyes.

“But I know who did.”

A pause.

Then:

“Her father is not Adrian.”

Mark looked at Eleanor.

The recording continued.

“He is not Thomas.”

Everyone stared.

Then Samuel whispered:

“Her father is Mark.”

Silence.

Mark stopped breathing.

Hannah stared at him.

“What?”

The tape continued.

“Mark is Hannah's biological father.”

Mark's knees nearly gave way.

“No.”

Eleanor began crying.

Hannah couldn't speak.

The recording continued.

“But Mark doesn't know.”

A long pause.

“Because Thomas altered the hospital records.”

Mark stared at Hannah.

She stared back.

Everything suddenly made sense.

The blood connection.

The erased memories.

The trust.

Leo.

Hannah.

Mark.

They weren't strangers brought together by a conspiracy.

They were father and daughter.

And someone had spent twenty-three years making sure neither of them knew.

The tape ended.

Nobody moved.

Then Hannah whispered:

“Why?”

Eleanor looked at her.

“Because Thomas knew that if you ever discovered Mark was your father…”

She stopped.

Hannah waited.

“…you would have the legal right to claim the entire trust.”

Mark stared at the floor.

Hannah stepped toward him.

“So you were my father all along.”

Mark looked at her through tears.

“I didn't know.”

“I know.”

She reached for his hand.

“And Leo?”

Mark looked at Isabella.

Isabella answered quietly:

“Leo is your half-brother.”

Hannah closed her eyes.

The family tree had finally become clear.

And with it came the most painful truth of all.

The people who had spent years fighting over the inheritance had never understood what Catherine had actually protected.

It wasn't money.

It was the family itself.

Then Mark's phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

LEO IS SAFE.

A second message followed.

BUT VICTORIA IS NOT.

Then a third.

SHE HAS BEEN TAKEN TO THE ORIGINAL TRUST.

Hannah looked up.

“Where is the trust?”

Margaret's face went pale.

“Beneath the old church.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

Mark asked:

“Why?”

Daniel looked toward Hannah.

“Because that's where Thomas killed your grandfather.”

Hannah stood.

“Then that's where we're going.”

Mark grabbed his coat.

“No.”

She looked at him.

“You're not going alone.”

Mark hesitated.

Then he nodded.

Outside, thunder rolled across the dark sky.

The family had finally discovered the truth about Leo's mother.

But they had also uncovered something far more dangerous.

Leo was not merely a missing child.

He was the final heir.

Hannah was his guardian.

Mark was her father.

And somewhere beneath an abandoned church, Victoria was being held by the one man who had manipulated them all.

Thomas Harrington.

May you like

Only this time, he wasn't running.

He was waiting.
