Chapter 14 — The Night Mark Chose His Son

Chapter 14 — The Night Mark Chose His Son

The mansion went completely dark.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Leo screamed.

“Daddy!”

Mark reacted instantly.

He ran toward the sound.

“Leo!”

A door slammed somewhere below them.

Hannah grabbed Sophie's hand.

“Stay with me.”

Victoria pulled her daughter close.

“What is happening?”

Daniel's flashlight snapped on.

A narrow beam cut through the darkness.

Harris shouted from the hallway:

“Everyone stay together!”

Then the speakers crackled again.

Thomas's voice filled the mansion.

“Mark.”

Mark stopped.

“You have one hour.”

His voice was calm.

Almost amused.

“Your son is waiting downstairs.”

Mark's blood ran cold.

“Where?”

Thomas laughed softly.

“But there's a condition.”

Mark looked around.

“What condition?”

“You must choose.”

Silence.

“Choose what?”

Thomas answered:

“Your daughter…”

A pause.

“…or your son.”

The speakers went dead.

The Hidden Basement

Daniel found a concealed staircase behind the library.

Sophie had been right.

There was another basement.

The stairs descended beneath the original foundation.

The walls became older with every step.

Hannah followed Mark.

“Dad.”

He stopped.

It was still strange hearing her call him that.

“What?”

“If Thomas is telling the truth—”

“He isn't.”

“But Leo is down there.”

“I know.”

“And he wants you to choose.”

Mark turned.

“I don't choose between my children.”

Hannah's eyes filled with tears.

“That may be exactly what he wants.”

Mark shook his head.

“He doesn't understand me.”

Daniel looked at him.

“He understands you better than anyone.”

Mark stared.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Thomas built his entire plan around your greatest weakness.”

“My weakness?”

“Your children.”

Mark looked toward the darkness.

“Then he made one mistake.”

“What?”

“He thinks love makes me weak.”

Mark continued down the stairs.

“It doesn't.”

Leo's Voice

Halfway down, they heard a child crying.

“Daddy!”

Mark ran.

Harris grabbed him.

“Wait.”

“That's my son!”

“We don't know what's behind the door.”

Mark pulled away.

“Leo!”

The voice came again.

“Daddy, please!”

Mark stood frozen.

Then Hannah whispered:

“That's really him.”

“How do you know?”

“Because he's using the nickname only he uses for you.”

Mark's face changed.

He approached the door.

“Leo?”

“Daddy!”

Mark touched the handle.

Then a second voice spoke from behind the door.

“Open it.”

Thomas.

Mark stepped back.

“No.”

Thomas laughed.

“You don't want your son?”

“I want him alive.”

“Then open the door.”

Mark looked at Hannah.

She shook her head.

“It's a trap.”

“I know.”

“Then don't.”

Mark stared at the door.

“I have to.”

Hannah grabbed his arm.

“Dad.”

Mark looked at her.

“If I lose Leo because I was afraid to open a door, I will never forgive myself.”

Hannah let go.

Mark opened it.

The Room of Two Doors

The room was enormous.

Two doors stood on opposite walls.

Behind one was Leo.

Behind the other—

nothing.

A speaker hung from the ceiling.

Thomas spoke.

“Choose.”

Mark stared.

“Which one is Leo?”

“You decide.”

“Let me see him.”

“No.”

“You're a coward.”

Thomas laughed.

“Perhaps.”

Mark examined the room.

There were no windows.

No visible cameras.

No way to know which door was real.

Then Hannah noticed something.

“Dad.”

She pointed.

A tiny red light blinked beneath the floor.

“Camera.”

Daniel crouched.

“There are several.”

Harris examined the wall.

“Explosives?”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“Then what?”

“Locks.”

Mark looked at the doors.

“They're electronically connected.”

Hannah nodded.

“Thomas wants us to activate one.”

Mark stared.

“What happens if we choose wrong?”

The speaker crackled.

Thomas answered.

“Your daughter dies.”

Everyone froze.

Hannah looked up.

“What?”

Thomas continued.

“One door contains Leo.”

“The other?”

“A detonator.”

Mark stared at the two doors.

Thomas laughed.

“Choose carefully.”

Mark's Choice

Hannah stepped forward.

“Choose mine.”

Mark turned.

“No.”

“If you choose wrong, I'll die anyway.”

“No.”

“But if you choose mine—”

“I said no.”

Hannah looked at him.

“You can't save both of us.”

Mark's voice broke.

“Yes, I can.”

Thomas laughed through the speaker.

“You always were sentimental.”

Mark ignored him.

He looked at the doors.

Then he noticed something.

The left door had scratches near the bottom.

Tiny scratches.

Three horizontal marks.

Then two.

Then three again.

Mark recognized them.

Leo's secret signal.

He had taught Leo years ago that if he was trapped somewhere and couldn't speak, he should tap three times, pause, then three times again.

Mark walked toward the left door.

“This one.”

Hannah grabbed his arm.

“How do you know?”

“Leo told me.”

Thomas became silent.

Mark smiled.

“You forgot something.”

“What?”

“You don't know my son.”

He opened the door.

Leo was inside.

Alive.

Terrified.

Mark rushed forward and pulled him into his arms.

“Daddy!”

“I've got you.”

Leo buried his face against his chest.

“I knew you'd come.”

Mark held him tightly.

Hannah smiled through tears.

Then the speaker crackled.

Thomas sounded furious.

“You cheated.”

Mark looked toward the camera.

“No.”

He held Leo tighter.

“I listened.”

The Door That Opened

The opposite door suddenly opened.

A timer appeared on the wall.

09:58

Harris looked at it.

“What is that?”

Daniel's expression changed.

“Run.”

Everyone moved.

“Why?”

“Because that's a real explosive.”

Mark carried Leo.

Hannah grabbed Sophie.

Victoria followed.

They raced toward the stairs.

The timer dropped.

08:41

Thomas's voice returned.

“You cannot outrun the past.”

Mark shouted:

“Watch me.”

They reached the upper floor.

The mansion shook.

Glass shattered.

The old chandelier crashed down.

Hannah pulled Sophie away.

Victoria screamed:

“Get outside!”

Everyone ran.

They reached the front lawn.

Seconds later—

BOOM.

The basement exploded.

Fire burst through the windows.

Smoke swallowed the lower floor.

Mark fell to his knees.

Leo was still in his arms.

Hannah ran toward him.

“Are you okay?”

Mark nodded.

Then he looked at Leo.

“Are you hurt?”

Leo shook his head.

“I heard him.”

“Who?”

“Mr. Thomas.”

Mark froze.

“What did he say?”

Leo looked toward the burning mansion.

“He said Mommy would be next.”

Victoria's face went pale.

Victoria's Last Fear

Victoria grabbed Leo's shoulders.

“Did he say anything else?”

Leo nodded.

“He said Sophie was the key.”

Victoria pulled her daughter close.

“No.”

Sophie looked at her mother.

“He wasn't lying.”

Victoria stared.

“You know something?”

Sophie nodded.

“I remember.”

“Remember what?”

“The night I disappeared.”

Victoria's hands trembled.

Sophie looked toward the mansion.

“Thomas didn't take me.”

“Then who did?”

Sophie pointed toward the forest.

“Grandma Margaret.”

Everyone froze.

Mark stared at Margaret.

She stood several yards away.

Crying.

Hannah turned.

“Grandma?”

Margaret shook her head.

“I was trying to save her.”

Sophie nodded.

“She did.”

Victoria stared at her.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Sloan was watching you.”

Victoria stepped back.

“You let me believe my daughter was dead.”

Margaret whispered:

“I had no choice.”

Victoria's face hardened.

“There is always a choice.”

She turned away.

For the first time, Hannah saw something change inside Victoria.

The anger was gone.

Only grief remained.

The Woman Who Knew the Truth

Sophie walked toward Hannah.

“There is something else.”

“What?”

“Thomas isn't the person controlling everything.”

Hannah's face tightened.

“Then who is?”

Sophie hesitated.

“The person you trust most.”

Hannah looked at Mark.

Then Daniel.

Then Harris.

Then Eleanor.

Sophie shook her head.

“Not them.”

“Who?”

Sophie whispered:

“Adrian.”

Hannah froze.

Her biological father.

The man who had claimed to protect her.

The man who had spent decades fighting Thomas.

“You're saying Adrian is behind this?”

Sophie nodded.

“He was there the night Leo was taken.”

Mark's face darkened.

“No.”

“I saw him.”

Mark looked toward Adrian.

He was standing near the police vehicles.

Watching them.

And smiling.

The Betrayal

Mark walked toward him.

“Adrian.”

Adrian turned.

“You found Leo.”

“Yes.”

“You should be happy.”

Mark stopped several feet away.

“What did you do?”

Adrian's smile disappeared.

“What are you talking about?”

Sophie stepped forward.

“You took Leo.”

Adrian looked at her.

“You don't understand.”

“I remember.”

Adrian's face changed.

“You shouldn't.”

Sophie answered:

“But I do.”

Hannah approached.

“Did you work with Thomas?”

Adrian sighed.

“For a while.”

Mark stared.

“You betrayed us.”

“No.”

“You endangered my son.”

“I protected him.”

Mark's voice rose.

“You locked him beneath my house!”

“I kept him away from Sloan.”

“You manipulated Hannah.”

“I protected her too.”

Mark stepped closer.

“You don't get to decide who needs protection.”

Adrian's eyes hardened.

“You have no idea what I've sacrificed.”

Mark answered:

“Neither did my son.”

The Final Test

Adrian looked at Leo.

“Ask him.”

Mark frowned.

“Ask him what?”

Adrian pointed toward the burning mansion.

“Who gave him the recorder.”

Leo's eyes widened.

Mark looked at his son.

“Leo?”

Leo slowly reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a tiny recording device.

“I found it in the wall.”

Mark stared.

“Play it.”

Leo pressed the button.

A familiar voice emerged.

Adrian.

“If Mark chooses Leo, everything proceeds as planned.”

Mark's face went white.

Another voice answered.

Thomas.

“And if he chooses Hannah?”

Adrian replied:

“Then we know which child he values more.”

Hannah's eyes filled with tears.

Mark looked at Adrian.

“You tested me.”

Adrian said nothing.

“You wanted to know whether I'd choose my son.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Adrian's voice softened.

“Because the trust requires a sacrifice.”

Mark froze.

“What sacrifice?”

Adrian looked at Hannah.

“The guardian must willingly give up her inheritance.”

Hannah understood.

Her entire life had been constructed around this moment.

The trust had never been about money.

It had been about proving whether the family would choose blood over wealth.

Adrian continued:

“If Hannah gives up the trust, Leo inherits everything.”

Hannah stepped forward.

“Then take it.”

Mark turned.

“No.”

She looked at him.

“Dad.”

“No.”

“I don't want it.”

“You shouldn't have to give up anything.”

Hannah smiled.

“I've already spent my life fighting for a family.”

She looked at Leo.

“Now I have one.”

The Last Door

The police searched the estate until dawn.

Thomas was nowhere to be found.

Adrian was arrested.

Sloan remained in custody.

Victoria and Sophie were reunited.

But something still bothered Hannah.

The trust.

The original trust.

It had survived the explosion.

Because it had never been beneath the church.

It had never been beneath the mansion.

It had been inside Catherine's old piano.

Hannah opened the hidden compartment.

Inside was a single envelope.

Her name was written on it.

She opened it.

Catherine's handwriting filled the page.

My dearest Hannah,

If you are reading this, then the family has finally reached the moment I feared.

You will be told that this trust is about money.

It is not.

It is about choice.

Anyone can choose wealth.

Anyone can choose power.

But only a parent can choose a child when everything else is at stake.

Hannah stopped.

Mark read over her shoulder.

The final paragraph was addressed to him.

Mark, if you are reading this, then you chose Leo.

Mark's eyes filled with tears.

That is why the trust belongs to your family.

Hannah folded the letter.

Leo stepped closer.

“What happens now?”

Mark knelt beside him.

“Now?”

He smiled.

“We go home.”

Leo looked toward the ruined mansion.

“That's our home?”

Mark looked at Hannah.

Then Isabella.

Then Victoria and Sophie.

Then Eleanor.

He smiled.

“No.”

He took Leo's hand.

“Home is wherever we are together.”

Hannah reached for Leo's other hand.

The three of them walked away from the burning mansion.

Behind them, the old house continued to smoke.

The secrets buried inside it were finally coming to the surface.

But Thomas was still missing.

And somewhere beyond the forest, his car was already moving toward the coast.

He looked at the photograph beside him.

Hannah.

Mark.

Leo.

Then he smiled.

Because he knew something they didn't.

The trust had been opened.

The family had survived.

But the final beneficiary had never been Leo.

May you like

It had always been someone else.

And that person was still alive.
