Chapter 9 — Hannah Becomes the Target

Chapter 9 — Hannah Becomes the Target
The message remained on every screen.
THE REAL FATHER IS ALIVE.
HE IS THE MAN VICTORIA FEARED MOST.
Nobody moved.
For several seconds, the only sound inside the hidden room was the rain striking the mansion windows.
Then every screen went black.
Hannah stared at her own reflection.
Her entire life had just been dismantled in front of her.
Her birth certificate was a lie.
Her mother's disappearance was a lie.
The story she had been told about her father was a lie.
Even her connection to the Harrington family was something she had never understood.
Mark stood beside her.
“Hannah…”
She stepped away.
“Don't.”
“I didn't know.”
“I know.”
Her voice was quiet.
That somehow made it worse.
“You didn't know who I was.”
“No.”
“You didn't know who my mother was.”
“No.”
“You didn't know your father had erased your memories.”
“No.”
Hannah looked at him.
“Then what do you know?”
Mark had no answer.
Behind them, Margaret closed the hidden cabinet.
“We need to leave.”
Harris immediately turned toward her.
“Why?”
“Because whoever sent that message knows we're here.”
Daniel looked toward the corridor.
“He's right.”
Mark frowned.
“Who?”
Daniel's face had gone pale.
“The man behind the screens.”
Hannah looked at him.
“You know who he is.”
Daniel didn't answer.
“Daniel.”
He finally looked at her.
“Yes.”
“Who is my father?”
Daniel whispered:
“The only man Thomas Harrington was ever afraid to face.”
The Attack
The first bullet came through the window.
Glass exploded across the room.
Mark grabbed Hannah and pulled her to the floor.
Harris fired toward the hallway.
“Everyone down!”
Another bullet struck the wall.
Leo screamed.
Mark covered his son's head.
“Stay with me.”
Margaret shouted:
“There's another exit!”
Daniel opened a concealed panel.
“Move!”
They rushed through.
Hannah stayed beside Eleanor.
For the first time in years, she was walking beside her mother.
But there was no time for questions.
Outside, headlights appeared through the rain.
Three black SUVs surrounded the estate.
Men in dark clothing moved between them.
Harris looked through a narrow window.
“There are at least ten.”
Mark frowned.
“Police?”
“No.”
Daniel answered.
“Mercer's men.”
Mark looked at him.
“Who is Mercer?”
Daniel didn't respond.
Instead, he looked at Hannah.
“They're here for you.”
Hannah's stomach dropped.
“Why me?”
Daniel's answer was immediate.
“Because they finally know you're the third heir.”
The Chase
They escaped through the underground tunnel.
The passage led beneath the estate and emerged near the lake.
Rain poured down.
Mark carried Leo.
Hannah held Eleanor's hand.
Margaret followed behind them.
Daniel stayed at the rear.
Gunshots echoed through the tunnel.
“They're coming!” Harris shouted.
Mark looked ahead.
“How far?”
“Two hundred yards.”
They reached the lake.
A black boat waited near the dock.
Mark stopped.
“Whose boat?”
Daniel answered:
“Mine.”
They climbed aboard.
The engine roared.
As they pulled away, a figure appeared at the edge of the trees.
Victoria.
She stood in the rain.
She wasn't carrying a weapon.
She simply watched.
Hannah stared at her.
Victoria shouted:
“HANNAH!”
Hannah turned.
“Your father is not who they told you!”
Mark pulled her back.
“Don't listen to her.”
Victoria screamed:
“ASK YOUR MOTHER WHAT HAPPENED THE NIGHT YOU WERE BORN!”
Eleanor's face changed.
Hannah saw it.
And suddenly, Victoria's words felt heavier than the gunshots.
The Safe House
They reached a small island cabin before dawn.
The building was hidden beneath pine trees.
Daniel secured the doors.
Harris checked every window.
Leo fell asleep in Mark's arms.
For a while, nobody spoke.
Then Hannah turned toward Eleanor.
“Tell me.”
Eleanor looked down.
“Tell you what?”
“Everything.”
“Hannah…”
“No more secrets.”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“You deserve the truth.”
Mark stood nearby.
Hannah looked at him.
“You stay too.”
Mark nodded.
Eleanor sat at the table.
“Your father was not Thomas Harrington.”
Hannah already knew.
“But he wasn't anyone you've heard of.”
“Who?”
Eleanor hesitated.
“His name was Adrian Black.”
Daniel's expression changed.
Mark frowned.
“Adrian Black?”
Harris looked up.
“You know him?”
Mark shook his head.
“No.”
Daniel answered:
“You've heard the name.”
Mark stared at him.
“Where?”
“Your father used to call him the devil.”
Adrian Black
Eleanor opened an old photograph.
A young man stood beside her.
He had dark hair.
Cold eyes.
A small scar beneath his chin.
Hannah stared.
“I've seen him.”
“Where?”
“At the mansion.”
Mark turned.
“When?”
“In one of your father's old portraits.”
Daniel shook his head.
“That wasn't a portrait.”
“What was it?”
“A warning.”
Eleanor continued.
“Adrian was your father's closest friend.”
Mark looked confused.
“Then what happened?”
“They built the Harrington empire together.”
“And then?”
“Thomas betrayed him.”
Hannah frowned.
“Why?”
“Money.”
Daniel corrected her.
“Power.”
Eleanor nodded.
“Adrian discovered Thomas was using the family trust to control people.”
“So he left?”
“No.”
Eleanor's eyes hardened.
“He tried to expose him.”
“What happened?”
“Thomas had him arrested.”
Mark stared.
“On what charge?”
“Murder.”
Silence.
“Adrian didn't commit it,” Eleanor continued. “Thomas framed him.”
Harris asked:
“Did he go to prison?”
“No.”
“Then where did he go?”
Eleanor looked toward the lake.
“He disappeared.”
The Night Hannah Was Born
Hannah's voice trembled.
“What does this have to do with me?”
Eleanor looked at her.
“Everything.”
She opened another photograph.
A newborn baby.
Hannah.
Eleanor was holding her.
And beside her stood Adrian.
Mark stared.
“When was this taken?”
“The night Hannah was born.”
Hannah's eyes filled with tears.
“My father was there.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because he made me promise.”
“To keep him secret?”
“To keep you alive.”
Hannah stared at the photograph.
“What happened that night?”
Eleanor's voice broke.
“Thomas found us.”
Mark went still.
“He came to the hospital?”
“Yes.”
“With Victoria?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Eleanor looked toward Daniel.
“Richard Sloan.”
Harris frowned.
“The executor?”
“Yes.”
Eleanor continued.
“They came for Hannah.”
Mark's jaw tightened.
“Why?”
“Because Thomas discovered she carried the final key to the trust.”
Hannah frowned.
“I thought the silver key was symbolic.”
“It wasn't.”
Eleanor reached into her coat.
She pulled out a small silver pendant.
The same shape.
The same symbol.
But this one had a tiny compartment.
She opened it.
Inside was a microchip.
Hannah stared.
“What is that?”
“The final authorization.”
The Third Heir's Power
Margaret stepped forward.
“The trust cannot be opened with money.”
She pointed to the chip.
“It requires three things.”
“What?”
“The first heir's confirmation.”
Hannah looked at Daniel.
“Michael.”
“Yes.”
“The second heir's bloodline.”
“Leo.”
“And the third?”
Margaret looked at Hannah.
“You.”
Hannah stared at the pendant.
“What happens if I use it?”
“The entire trust becomes transparent.”
Mark frowned.
“To whom?”
“Everyone.”
Harris understood.
“Every account.”
“Every payment.”
“Every hidden beneficiary.”
“Every crime connected to the estate.”
Margaret nodded.
“Everything Thomas buried.”
Hannah's hands shook.
“And Victoria?”
“She loses everything.”
Hannah looked toward the sleeping Leo.
“And if I don't?”
Margaret's expression darkened.
“Victoria survives.”
The Phone Call
A phone began ringing.
Everyone froze.
It was an old landline.
No one had given anyone the number.
Harris answered.
“Hello?”
A man's voice spoke.
“Put Hannah on.”
Harris looked at her.
“Who is this?”
The man ignored him.
“Hannah.”
She took the phone.
“Who are you?”
The voice was calm.
“I've been waiting twenty-three years to hear your voice.”
Hannah's heart stopped.
“Are you Adrian?”
Silence.
Then:
“Yes.”
She closed her eyes.
“My father.”
“Yes.”
Mark stepped closer.
Hannah turned away.
“Where are you?”
“Closer than you think.”
“Why did you leave?”
“Because your life was more important than mine.”
“You let me believe you were dead.”
“I never told you I was dead.”
“My mother did.”
“She was protecting you.”
Hannah's voice broke.
“From what?”
“From me.”
She froze.
“Why?”
“Because the people hunting you believe I am dangerous.”
“Are you?”
A long pause.
“Only to the people who deserve to be afraid.”
Hannah tightened her grip on the phone.
“Why is Victoria afraid of you?”
“Because I know what she did.”
“What did she do?”
“She didn't kill Leo.”
Hannah frowned.
“What?”
“Victoria rescued him.”
Hannah looked at Mark.
Adrian continued:
“The person who wants Leo dead is not Victoria.”
“Who?”
“The man who hired Victoria.”
“Gabriel?”
“No.”
Hannah's stomach tightened.
“Then who?”
Adrian whispered:
“Richard Sloan.”
The Executor
Harris immediately reached for his phone.
“That's impossible.”
Adrian laughed softly.
“You've been looking in the wrong direction.”
Harris frowned.
“Where is Sloan?”
“Ask Mark.”
Mark's face changed.
“What?”
Adrian continued:
“Your father trusted Sloan more than anyone.”
Mark shook his head.
“Sloan was his attorney.”
“He was more than that.”
“What?”
“He was the architect.”
“Of what?”
“Everything.”
The call ended.
Mark looked at Harris.
“We need to find Sloan.”
Harris nodded.
But Hannah was staring at the wall.
“What?”
She whispered:
“He's already here.”
Everyone turned.
Hannah pointed toward the window.
A black car sat near the trees.
The same car from the mansion.
The driver's door opened.
Richard Sloan stepped out.
The Man at the Door
Richard Sloan walked toward the cabin alone.
He was an elderly man in a gray coat.
No weapon.
No visible security.
He knocked.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
The same code Leo had used.
Mark opened the door slightly.
“Sloan.”
Richard smiled.
“You finally remembered me.”
Mark's voice hardened.
“Stay where you are.”
Sloan looked past him.
His eyes settled on Hannah.
“There she is.”
Hannah stepped forward.
“Who am I?”
Sloan smiled.
“You're the reason Thomas Harrington destroyed his own family.”
Mark's face tightened.
“Tell us the truth.”
Sloan looked at him.
“Your father wasn't trying to protect the empire.”
“Then what?”
“He was trying to protect you.”
Mark frowned.
“From Adrian?”
“No.”
Sloan looked toward Hannah.
“From her.”
Hannah's face went pale.
“What did I do?”
“Nothing.”
“Then why?”
“Because your existence proved Thomas had lied.”
“About what?”
Sloan's expression changed.
“About who inherited the empire.”
Silence.
Sloan reached into his coat.
He removed an old document.
“The Harrington empire was never Thomas's.”
He handed it to Mark.
“It belonged to Adrian.”
Mark read the first line.
Then stopped.
The document was signed by Thomas Harrington.
And underneath his signature:
I acknowledge Adrian Black as the rightful founder and controlling beneficiary of the Harrington estate.
Mark looked up.
“Why did my father sign this?”
Sloan smiled.
“Because he was afraid.”
“Of Adrian?”
“No.”
Sloan looked directly at Hannah.
“Of what Adrian's daughter would become.”
Hannah's heart stopped.
“My daughter?”
Sloan shook his head.
“No.”
He pointed at Hannah.
“His heir.”
The Target
A gunshot shattered the cabin window.
Sloan dropped to the floor.
Harris shouted:
“DOWN!”
Mark pulled Hannah behind the wall.
Another bullet struck the door.
Sloan crawled toward the hallway.
“They're here.”
“Who?”
Sloan looked terrified.
“The people Adrian couldn't stop.”
Hannah stared.
“Who are they?”
Sloan whispered:
“The real owners of the empire.”
Mark looked toward the forest.
Several armed figures appeared between the trees.
At their center stood Victoria.
But she wasn't leading them.
A tall man stood behind her.
He was older.
Elegant.
Calm.
And when Hannah saw his face, she recognized him from the oldest photograph in the hidden room.
Adrian Black.
Her father.
He wasn't attacking them.
He was walking toward them.
Victoria stood beside him.
For the first time, she looked powerless.
Adrian stopped at the edge of the trees.
His eyes met Hannah's.
He said only four words.
“I'm sorry, my daughter.”
Hannah couldn't breathe.
Then Adrian turned toward Victoria.
“You failed.”
Victoria began crying.
“I had no choice.”
“You always had a choice.”
He raised his hand.
His men moved forward.
Mark stepped between them and Hannah.
“You're not taking her.”
Adrian looked at Mark.
“I didn't come to take her.”
“Then why are you here?”
Adrian's eyes hardened.
“Because tonight, someone else is coming.”
“Who?”
Adrian looked toward the dark road.
“The man who killed your father.”
Mark froze.
“My father died naturally.”
Adrian shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at Hannah.
“Thomas Harrington was murdered.”
Silence.
“And the person who ordered it,” Adrian continued, “is the same person hunting Hannah now.”
A car engine roared in the distance.
Adrian's expression became grim.
“He knows she's the third heir.”
The headlights appeared through the trees.
Adrian whispered:
“And he's coming for her.”
Hannah stared at the approaching vehicle.
For the first time, she understood the true danger.
She wasn't being hunted because of money.
She was being hunted because she possessed the one thing that could expose an empire built on lies.
The car stopped.
The rear door opened.
A man stepped out.
Richard Sloan looked at him and immediately began to tremble.
Adrian raised his weapon.
Mark stared.
Hannah stared.
May you like
And Sloan whispered the name nobody had expected to hear.
“Thomas.”
