Chapter 11 – The Recording

Chapter 11 – The Recording

Rain hammered against the ambulance roof as paramedics wheeled the unconscious woman through the gates of the Hayes estate.

Jonathan stood beside the stretcher, drenched from head to toe, unable to take his eyes off the black folder clutched tightly against the woman's chest.

"Careful!" one paramedic called.

"It's locked in her hands."

Michael gently pried her fingers loose.

The leather folder was scorched around the edges but otherwise intact.

Jonathan exhaled slowly.

"They didn't get it."

The woman suddenly coughed.

Her eyelids fluttered open.

Jonathan recognized her immediately.

"Emily Brooks."

The Woman Everyone Thought Was Gone

Emily looked around in confusion.

Smoke lingered in the night air, and red emergency lights reflected across the soaked driveway.

"Jonathan..."

Her voice was barely audible.

"They came back."

Jonathan knelt beside her.

"Who?"

Emily swallowed painfully.

"Charles..."

"And Vivian."

Michael's expression hardened.

"Did they attack you?"

Emily nodded weakly.

"I followed Vivian after she left the house."

"I saw her meet Charles near the old greenhouse."

"They argued."

Jonathan frowned.

"About what?"

Emily closed her eyes, trying to remember.

"Charles wanted the folder."

"Vivian wanted the tape."

Jonathan exchanged a glance with Michael.

So the videotape and the folder had been separated.

Someone no longer trusted the other.

The Fireproof Envelope

Back inside the library, Jonathan placed the fireproof envelope on the table.

Everyone gathered around.

Margaret.

Harold.

Dr. Lewis.

Elena.

Lucy, wrapped in a blanket, sat quietly beside her mother.

Jonathan carefully broke the seal.

Inside was another letter from his father.

But this time, there was also a small digital voice recorder.

Unlike the old VHS tape, this recorder had survived untouched.

Jonathan unfolded the letter.

Jonathan,

If this message reaches you, then the tape has probably been destroyed. I prepared a second copy because I never believed the truth should depend on one piece of evidence.

Do not judge what you are about to hear too quickly. Listen until the very end.

The greatest lie was never about money.

It was about family.

Jonathan looked at the recorder in silence.

His thumb hovered over the Play button.

Then he pressed it.

Twenty Years Earlier

Static filled the room.

Then came the unmistakable voice of Jonathan's late father.

"If you're hearing this..."

"...I'm probably dead."

Margaret covered her mouth.

Tears rolled silently down her cheeks.

The recording continued.

"Today's date is July 18."

"I've just finished speaking with Daniel."

A second voice entered.

Small.

Shaky.

A frightened boy.

Daniel.

Jonathan had never heard him before.

Daniel's Story

"Mr. Hayes..."

"I didn't mean to hear them."

His father's calm voice answered.

"I know."

"You've done nothing wrong."

Daniel sniffled.

"They were yelling."

"Mr. Thomas kept saying the papers had to disappear."

"And Mr. Charles said if anyone found out..."

The boy hesitated.

Jonathan's father spoke gently.

"It's alright."

"You can tell me."

Daniel took a deep breath.

"I saw him push the man."

Silence.

"He hit his head."

"There was blood."

"I wanted to help..."

"But Mr. Charles saw me."

Every person in the library sat frozen.

Harold slowly lowered his head.

Dr. Lewis closed his eyes.

The recording continued.

"What happened next?" Jonathan's father asked.

Daniel whispered,

"He smiled."

"And told me accidents happen."

A Child's Fear

Daniel's breathing became uneven.

"He said if I ever told anyone..."

"...my new family would disappear too."

Jonathan clenched his fists.

Even as a child, Daniel had carried a burden no one should bear.

His father spoke again.

"Listen to me carefully."

"I'm going to protect you."

"No matter what happens."

Daniel asked the question every child would ask.

"Will you tell Mrs. Hayes?"

There was a long pause.

"No."

"Not yet."

"The fewer people who know where you're going..."

"...the safer you'll be."

The Voice No One Expected

The recording crackled.

Footsteps echoed.

Then another voice entered the room.

Female.

Young.

Confident.

Jonathan felt his pulse quicken.

Vivian.

Only much younger.

She laughed softly.

"I told you he couldn't keep secrets forever."

Margaret gasped.

Harold went pale.

Jonathan's father sounded startled.

"Vivian?"

"What are you doing here?"

She answered calmly.

"My father sent me."

Jonathan looked toward Michael.

This recording proved she had known his father decades before she claimed they had ever met.

But it got worse.

The Offer

Vivian's younger voice was disturbingly composed.

"Give Daniel to Charles."

"And none of this has to happen."

Jonathan's father replied firmly.

"Absolutely not."

"You have no idea what Charles is capable of."

Vivian chuckled.

"Oh..."

"I know exactly what he's capable of."

The room fell into stunned silence.

Jonathan felt a chill run down his spine.

She hadn't been manipulated by Charles.

She had been working with him willingly.

Even then.

The Gunshot

The recording suddenly erupted into chaos.

A door slammed open.

Someone shouted.

Daniel screamed.

Then—

A gunshot.

Lucy instinctively covered her ears.

Margaret sobbed openly.

Static overwhelmed the recorder for several seconds.

Finally, Jonathan's father spoke again, breathing heavily.

"If anyone ever hears this..."

"...Daniel escaped."

"I repeat..."

"Daniel escaped."

The recording ended with one final sentence.

"Trust no one carrying the Calloway name."

Click.

Silence.

A New Discovery

No one spoke for nearly a minute.

Finally, Michael broke the silence.

"Daniel survived."

Harold nodded.

"That's why your father created the fake death."

Jonathan stared at the recorder.

His father hadn't failed.

He had bought Daniel time.

Emily suddenly remembered something.

"The folder..."

Michael opened the recovered black folder.

Inside were financial records, surveillance reports, and dozens of coded documents.

Tucked into the very back was a recent photograph.

Not twenty years old.

Taken only three months earlier.

It showed a bearded man stepping out of a small country church.

On the back, someone had written:

Subject: Daniel Hayes
Status: Located
Awaiting Final Instructions

Jonathan's breathing stopped.

Daniel wasn't dead.

He wasn't missing.

Someone had found him.

Before anyone could absorb the discovery, the library phone rang.

Jonathan answered immediately.

A frightened male voice whispered,

"Mr. Hayes..."

"They found me."

Jonathan's heart pounded.

"Daniel?"

The caller hesitated.

Then came six words that turned the room ice cold.

"They're already inside your house."

The line went dead.
