Chapter 13 – The Mask Falls

Chapter 13 – The Mask Falls
Every monitor in the library displayed Vivian's face.
She sat in an elegant leather chair, dressed in black, her posture flawless, her expression composed. Behind her was a floor-to-ceiling window overlooking a city skyline. There was no panic in her eyes.
Only confidence.
"Welcome home, Oliver," she repeated softly. "I've been waiting for this reunion for almost twenty years."
Jonathan stepped closer to the largest screen.
"Where are you?"
Vivian smiled.
"If I told you, the game would end too quickly."
Michael immediately signaled the security technician.
"Trace the signal."
The technician's fingers flew across the keyboard.
"It's bouncing through multiple servers."
"She's masking her location."
Vivian laughed as if she had heard him.
"I expected better, Michael."
The technician froze.
"How does she know my name?"
"Because," Vivian answered calmly, "I've been watching all of you."
No More Pretending
Jonathan stared at the woman he had once loved.
"You can stop pretending."
"For years, I believed every lie you told."
"I believed you married me because you loved me."
"I believed you cared for my mother."
"I believed you wanted a family."
His voice hardened.
"I was wrong."
Vivian didn't deny it.
Instead, she slowly removed her wedding ring.
She held it between two fingers.
"For a businessman, Jonathan..."
"...you invested in the wrong illusion."
She let the ring fall onto the desk in front of her.
The metallic sound echoed through the speakers.
"I never loved you."
Margaret quietly closed her eyes.
Even after everything, hearing those words out loud felt like another wound.
The Flash Drive
Jonathan placed the flash drive Oliver had brought onto the table.
"You've been trying to destroy this."
Vivian's smile faded for the first time.
"So."
"You found it."
Oliver stepped beside Jonathan.
"I stole it from Charles."
Vivian looked directly into the camera.
"No."
"You stole it from me."
The room fell silent.
Jonathan frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Vivian leaned forward.
"Charles never controlled the evidence."
"I did."
The Truth About Charles
Oliver looked stunned.
"You're lying."
Vivian slowly shook her head.
"Charles believed he was protecting the family."
"My family."
"But he never realized he was protecting me."
Michael narrowed his eyes.
"You manipulated him."
Vivian smiled.
"Charles was loyal."
"Loyal people are easy to use."
Oliver remembered every conversation he'd had with Charles over the past few weeks.
The old man had constantly spoken about "fixing old mistakes."
Never once had he spoken about revenge.
Jonathan finally understood.
"Charles wasn't the mastermind."
Vivian nodded.
"Finally."
"You've started asking the right questions."
The Recording They Never Heard
Michael inserted the flash drive into the library computer.
Several encrypted files appeared.
One was labeled:
ORIGINAL SECURITY FOOTAGE
Another read:
PRIVATE AUDIO
Jonathan clicked the audio file first.
A conversation began.
The date matched the night of the murder.
Thomas Calloway's voice filled the room.
"This partnership is over."
Jonathan's father's voice answered.
"It never should have started."
Then came another voice.
Vivian.
She sounded barely eighteen.
"If he talks..."
"...everything ends."
Thomas sighed.
"Leave this to me."
But Vivian interrupted.
"No."
"I'll do it."
The room fell silent.
Jonathan felt his heartbeat pounding in his ears.
The audio ended abruptly.
No struggle.
No scream.
Only those four chilling words.
I'll do it.
The Video
Jonathan clicked the security footage.
The grainy black-and-white recording appeared.
A warehouse office.
Time stamp:
July 18 - 9:42 PM
Thomas Calloway argued with another businessman.
Jonathan recognized him immediately.
Richard Evans.
The company's chief financial officer.
The argument escalated.
Thomas shoved Richard.
Richard stumbled backward.
His head struck the corner of a steel cabinet.
He collapsed.
Not moving.
Oliver whispered,
"I thought Charles pushed him."
Michael paused the video.
"No."
"He was standing across the room."
Jonathan watched in silence.
Then Vivian entered the frame.
She looked at Richard's motionless body.
Then calmly picked up a heavy bronze paperweight.
She walked over.
And struck Richard once.
Then again.
Then a third time.
Margaret gasped.
"Oh, God..."
Vivian's voice came calmly through the monitor.
"He was already dead after the fall."
Jonathan looked at the screen in disbelief.
"You still hit him."
She shrugged.
"I wanted to make sure."
The Perfect Smile
The room stared at the woman on the monitor.
Not one trace of regret crossed her face.
"I learned something that night," Vivian said.
"People don't fear evil."
"They fear confidence."
She smiled the same perfect smile she had worn at charity galas, board meetings, and family dinners.
"So I smiled."
"And no one ever questioned me."
Jonathan realized that Lily had been the first.
A seven-year-old child had seen what dozens of adults had refused to notice.
Not evidence.
Not crimes.
The emptiness behind Vivian's smile.
Charles Calls
Michael's phone suddenly rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A tired voice spoke.
"This is Charles."
Everyone in the room froze.
"I've seen the video."
Jonathan took the phone.
"Where are you?"
Charles ignored the question.
"I've spent twenty years believing I was protecting my brother."
"I was wrong."
Jonathan remained silent.
Charles continued.
"I'll testify."
"I'll tell the police everything."
Oliver closed his eyes in relief.
Finally...
The truth would come from the only surviving witness besides Vivian.
Then Charles whispered,
"There's only one problem."
Jonathan's stomach tightened.
"What?"
"I don't think I'll make it."
A loud crash echoed through the phone.
Someone shouted.
A gunshot exploded in the background.
The line filled with static.
Then disconnected.
The Mask Falls
At that exact moment, every monitor switched back to Vivian.
Her smile was gone.
For the first time since Jonathan had known her...
She looked angry.
"You should have stayed out of this."
Jonathan met her gaze.
"No."
"You should have told the truth."
Vivian stood from her chair.
"You still don't understand."
She picked up a small remote control.
"There is one last secret."
She pressed a button.
The library lights dimmed.
The computer screen flashed.
A hidden document automatically opened.
At the very top, in bold letters, it read:
CONFIDENTIAL ADOPTION RECORD
Jonathan frowned.
Then he read the first line.
Child's Name: Lily Parker
His blood turned to ice.
Biological Father: Jonathan Hayes
The room erupted into stunned silence.
Maria looked at Lily in disbelief.
Jonathan slowly turned toward the little girl.
His voice barely escaped his lips.

"...What?"
