Chapter 12 – Oliver Comes Home

Chapter 12 – Oliver Comes Home

The dial tone echoed through the library.

Jonathan kept the receiver pressed against his ear, hoping the caller would speak again.

Nothing.

Only silence.

Michael was already moving.

"Trace the call."

One of the security technicians hurried to the communications panel.

After several tense moments, he looked up.

"It lasted only twelve seconds."

"Disposable phone."

"No location."

Jonathan slowly lowered the receiver.

Daniel had called.

He was alive.

And someone had forced him to hang up.

Another Intruder

The mansion had become a fortress.

Security officers searched every hallway, every servant's passage, every storage room.

No one entered.

No one left.

Yet Michael couldn't shake the feeling that Daniel's warning had meant something else.

"They're already inside your house."

Not outside.

Inside.

He turned to Jonathan.

"We're looking for the wrong people."

Jonathan frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"If Charles planned this for years, why would he need to break in?"

Michael's eyes swept across the staff gathered in the foyer.

"He would already have someone here."

The realization spread through the room like ice water.

One of the employees...

Had been working for the Calloways.

The Old Gardener

Lucy wandered toward the front window.

She watched the rain fall across the estate.

Then she pointed toward the greenhouse.

"The old man."

Everyone followed her gaze.

An elderly gardener pushed a wheelbarrow through the rain.

Jonathan frowned.

"That's Oliver."

Margaret looked confused.

"Oliver retired six months ago."

Michael's expression sharpened.

"Then why is he here?"

Jonathan didn't wait.

He ran outside.

The Man Who Never Left

Oliver Bennett looked up as Jonathan approached.

Despite the rain, the old gardener didn't seem surprised.

"I wondered how long it would take."

Jonathan stopped several feet away.

"You've been here all night?"

Oliver nodded.

"I never really left."

Michael caught up, accompanied by two guards.

"Who are you working for?"

Oliver smiled sadly.

"For your father."

Jonathan froze.

"My father died twenty years ago."

Oliver reached into his weathered coat.

The guards immediately raised their weapons.

Oliver slowly removed...

A small brass key.

"I've been waiting to give this back."

Jonathan stared at it.

The key matched the one found inside the hidden lockbox.

A Promise Kept

They returned to the library.

Oliver carefully removed his soaked hat.

His white hair clung to his forehead, making him appear older than Jonathan remembered.

"I made a promise."

"To whom?" Jonathan asked.

"Your father."

Oliver placed the brass key beside the hidden will.

"The night Daniel disappeared."

Harold suddenly recognized him.

"You drove them."

Oliver nodded.

"I took Daniel somewhere no one would ever think to look."

Jonathan leaned forward.

"Where?"

Oliver looked directly into his eyes.

"I can't tell you."

The room fell silent.

Jonathan's patience snapped.

"People have died."

"My mother has suffered for years."

"My family has been torn apart."

"And you're still keeping secrets?"

Oliver's voice remained calm.

"Because I promised Daniel."

Why Daniel Vanished

Oliver sighed heavily.

"The boy begged us."

"He didn't want another family destroyed because of him."

Jonathan shook his head.

"He was only eight."

"He understood more than most adults."

Oliver looked toward Margaret.

"Daniel believed that if Charles couldn't find him..."

"...the Hayes family would finally be safe."

Margaret began crying quietly.

"He blamed himself."

Oliver nodded.

"Every single day."

The Second Identity

Michael unfolded the recent surveillance photograph.

"We found this."

Oliver smiled faintly.

"So they finally located him."

Jonathan stepped closer.

"His name isn't Daniel anymore, is it?"

Oliver shook his head.

"No."

"He hasn't used that name in almost twenty years."

"What does he call himself?"

Oliver hesitated.

Then answered softly.

"Oliver."

Jonathan blinked.

"You named him after yourself?"

The old gardener chuckled.

"No."

"He chose it."

"He said I was the only person who never lied to him."

Oliver Comes Home

A car engine echoed outside.

Everyone instinctively looked toward the front entrance.

Headlights swept across the rain-soaked driveway.

Michael frowned.

"No vehicle was cleared through the gate."

The front doors slowly opened.

A tall man stepped inside.

Mid-thirties.

Dark beard.

Worn leather jacket.

Rain dripped from his sleeves.

His eyes carefully studied every face in the foyer.

Until they landed on Oliver Bennett.

The old gardener smiled.

"You finally came home."

The man lowered his head.

"I'm sorry I took so long."

Margaret stared at him.

Her lips trembled.

"Daniel..."

The stranger looked at her with tears already forming.

"I haven't been Daniel for a long time."

"But..."

He smiled sadly.

"I've never stopped missing this family."

Jonathan stepped forward slowly.

"Is it really you?"

The man nodded.

"My legal name is Oliver Bennett."

"But your father always called me Danny."

Without another word, Jonathan embraced him.

For the first time in nearly two decades, the missing boy had come home.

The Truth About Vivian

Later that night, they gathered once more in the library.

Oliver held the old photograph of himself as a child.

"I've carried the truth for too long."

Jonathan sat opposite him.

"Tell us everything."

Oliver took a deep breath.

"Charles didn't kill that man."

The room went completely still.

"What?" Michael asked.

Oliver closed his eyes.

"I lied."

Jonathan stared at him in disbelief.

"The recording..."

"...wasn't the whole story."

Oliver looked devastated.

"I saw someone push the victim."

"I thought it was Charles."

"But I was hiding."

"I couldn't see clearly."

Jonathan frowned.

"Then who was it?"

Oliver slowly looked toward Vivian's photograph on the table.

"It wasn't Charles."

"It was her father."

"Thomas Calloway."

Michael leaned forward.

"And Charles?"

Oliver answered quietly.

"He spent twenty years protecting the wrong secret."

Before anyone could process the revelation, Oliver reached into his jacket and removed a small flash drive.

"I took this from Charles three days ago."

Jonathan accepted it.

"What's on it?"

Oliver's face grew pale.

"The one thing Vivian has spent twenty years trying to destroy."

"The original security footage."

Jonathan's heart pounded.

"From the night of the murder?"

Oliver nodded.

"It shows everything."

Just then, the lights in the library flickered.

The security system beeped once.

Twice.

Then every monitor in the room switched on by itself.

A woman's face appeared simultaneously on every screen.

Vivian.

She smiled calmly into the cameras.

Then she spoke.

"Welcome home, Oliver."

May you like

"I've been waiting for you."
