Chapter 5 – The Forgotten Nurse

Chapter 5 – The Forgotten Nurse

The words flashed across Michael's tablet in bright red.

REMOTE DATA DELETION IN PROGRESS...

"No!" Michael shouted.

He immediately switched the tablet to airplane mode and yanked the memory card from its slot.

The screen went black.

For a long, terrifying second, no one spoke.

Then Michael inserted the card into a portable forensic reader that operated without a network connection.

The loading bar crawled across the screen.

Twenty percent...

Thirty-five...

Fifty...

Finally, it stopped.

Michael exhaled.

"We saved most of it."

Jonathan let out a slow breath he hadn't realized he was holding.

"Can it be recovered?"

"Not all of it," Michael admitted. "But whoever tried to erase the files was interrupted. We still have dozens of recordings."

Jonathan's eyes shifted toward Vivian.

She stood by the library window, composed as ever, but one gloved hand was clenched so tightly that her knuckles had turned white.

For the first time, Jonathan wondered how many secrets his wife had buried—and how far she would go to keep them hidden.

A Name from the Past

Dr. Lewis closed his medical bag and frowned thoughtfully.

"There is someone you need to find."

Jonathan looked at him.

"Who?"

"The nurse who cared for your mother before Vivian insisted she could manage everything herself."

Margaret blinked.

"Emily..."

The name escaped her lips like a forgotten prayer.

"Emily Brooks."

Jonathan searched his memory.

A kind woman in her late fifties.

Always smiling.

Always reading mystery novels while Margaret rested.

"What happened to her?"

Vivian answered before anyone else could.

"She resigned."

Dr. Lewis immediately shook his head.

"No."

"I never accepted her resignation."

The room fell silent.

Jonathan slowly turned toward Vivian.

"You told me she left because she wanted to retire."

Vivian folded her arms.

"That's what she told me."

Dr. Lewis reached into his briefcase again and produced an old personnel file.

"I visited Emily at her apartment after she disappeared from work."

Jonathan frowned.

"And?"

"She was gone."

"No forwarding address."

"No phone number."

"No explanation."

He paused before adding quietly,

"It was as though she had vanished overnight."

The Empty Apartment

Michael quickly contacted one of his investigators.

Within an hour, a report arrived.

Emily Brooks' apartment had remained vacant for nearly eighteen months.

Neighbors remembered the day she left.

One elderly resident had spoken with the investigator only minutes earlier.

Michael read from his notes.

"Mrs. Wilson, apartment 4B."

He looked up.

"She says Emily didn't move willingly."

Jonathan's expression darkened.

"What happened?"

Michael continued.

"Mrs. Wilson saw two men loading Emily's belongings into a black SUV."

"Emily was crying."

"She kept saying..."

He hesitated.

"...'Mr. Hayes has to know the truth.'"

Margaret covered her mouth.

Jonathan's fists slowly tightened.

Lucy's Drawing

While the adults spoke, Lucy quietly sat at the library table with her sketchbook.

She drew silently.

When she finished, she walked over to Jonathan.

"I remembered something."

Jonathan looked down.

It was a child's drawing of the upstairs hallway.

Margaret's bedroom.

Vivian standing beside the hidden passage.

And another woman.

A woman with short gray hair wearing blue medical scrubs.

Lucy pointed at the drawing.

"She was crying."

Jonathan stared.

"Emily?"

Lucy nodded.

"Mrs. Vivian told her to leave."

"What exactly did she say?"

Lucy squeezed her pencil tightly.

"I couldn't hear everything."

She closed her eyes, trying to remember.

"She said..."

"...if you cared about your family..."

"...you'd disappear."

The room grew cold.

The Phone Call

Just then, Michael's phone rang.

He answered immediately.

"Michael."

A voice spoke rapidly on the other end.

Michael's expression changed.

"What?"

He looked at Jonathan.

"We found Emily."

Everyone froze.

"Where?"

"A private nursing home in Kentucky."

Jonathan frowned.

"Working there?"

Michael slowly shook his head.

"No."

"She's a patient."

A Visit to Ashwood Manor

The following morning, Jonathan, Margaret, Dr. Lewis, Michael, Elena, and Lucy drove to Ashwood Manor, a quiet care facility nestled among rolling hills.

Rain drizzled against the windows as they entered.

The receptionist greeted them politely.

"We're here to see Emily Brooks."

She hesitated.

"You must be Mr. Hayes."

Jonathan nodded.

"I am."

Her face softened.

"She's been waiting a long time for you."

Jonathan's heart skipped.

"What do you mean?"

The receptionist looked down.

"Every week she asks if you've finally come."

Emily Brooks

Emily looked older than Jonathan remembered.

Her once-dark hair had turned almost completely silver.

A faint scar crossed her forehead.

She sat by the window knitting a small blue blanket.

When Jonathan stepped into the room, she looked up.

For several seconds, she simply stared.

Then tears filled her eyes.

"You came."

Jonathan knelt beside her chair.

"I'm sorry it took so long."

Emily smiled sadly.

"I knew someday you'd learn."

Margaret walked forward.

Their eyes met.

Emily immediately began crying.

"I'm so sorry."

Margaret embraced her tightly.

"You tried to help me."

Emily nodded.

"I failed."

"No."

Margaret whispered.

"You survived."

The Truth About the Nurse

They spent nearly an hour talking.

Emily's memories were painfully clear.

"I noticed the medication first."

She looked toward Dr. Lewis.

"The pills didn't match your prescriptions."

"I confronted Vivian."

Jonathan listened without blinking.

"What happened?"

Emily took a slow breath.

"She offered me money."

"She said your mother was becoming difficult."

"She wanted me to stay quiet."

"And when you refused?"

Emily's hands began trembling.

"I was fired."

"I threatened to tell you."

She looked down.

"The next night..."

"...someone forced my car off the road."

The room fell silent.

Jonathan felt every muscle in his body tense.

"I survived."

Emily touched the scar on her forehead.

"But I suffered a severe concussion."

"When I woke up..."

"I couldn't remember much."

Dr. Lewis nodded sadly.

"The hospital contacted me."

"They said your memory might return."

Emily smiled faintly.

"It finally did."

She looked directly at Jonathan.

"I've been waiting for someone to ask me what happened."

The Journal's Secret

Before they left, Emily reached into her bedside drawer.

She removed a small envelope.

"I kept this hidden."

Jonathan opened it carefully.

Inside was a single photograph.

Taken in the Hayes library.

Margaret sat reading peacefully.

Behind her, barely visible near the bookshelf...

Vivian was replacing a bottle of medication.

The timestamp in the corner showed the picture had been taken nearly two years earlier.

Emily explained quietly,

"I took it because I knew no one would believe my word alone."

Jonathan stared at the image.

It was the first undeniable piece of physical evidence connecting Vivian to the altered medication.

But there was something else in the photograph.

Michael leaned closer.

"Zoom in."

Jonathan enlarged the image.

In the reflection of the library window stood a man.

Tall.

Wearing a dark suit.

Watching Vivian.

His face was partially hidden, but one detail stood out.

A distinctive silver signet ring engraved with the letter C.

Jonathan looked at Michael.

"Do you recognize him?"

Michael's face grew serious.

"I've seen that ring before."

"Where?"

Michael looked toward Vivian's photograph one last time before answering.

"On the hand of Claire Whitmore..."

He corrected himself.

"...No."

"On the hand of Charles Calloway."

Jonathan frowned.

"Who's Charles Calloway?"

Michael's voice dropped to a whisper.

"Your wife's older brother."

"And according to every public record..."

May you like

"...he died five years ago."
