Chapter 9 – The Trap

Chapter 9 – The Trap
The library remained deathly silent.
Jonathan stared at the forensic report lying on the mahogany table.
Vivian's fingerprint.
Embedded in dried blood beneath his father's hidden will.
It should have been impossible.
The will had been written nearly twenty years before Jonathan had supposedly met Vivian.
Yet the evidence suggested otherwise.
Michael carefully set the report aside.
"There are only two possibilities."
Jonathan looked up.
"Either the report is wrong..."
"...or Vivian has been part of your family's story far longer than she ever admitted."
Harold Benson sighed heavily.
"I'm afraid it's the second."
Margaret closed her eyes.
"She came into this house as a child."
Jonathan turned sharply.
"You knew her?"
Margaret nodded.
"Her father often brought Charles and Vivian to company picnics."
"She used to play in the gardens."
"She knew every hallway in this mansion."
Jonathan remembered how effortlessly Vivian had taken charge after they married. She had known where old family records were kept, where spare keys were hidden, even how to operate the antique security system.
At the time, he had admired her adaptability.
Now he realized she had never been learning the house.
She had been returning to it.
Building the Trap
Jonathan stood and walked toward the rain-speckled window.
"If Vivian has lied for this long..."
"...she won't confess simply because we confront her."
Michael nodded.
"People like her don't panic."
"They calculate."
Jonathan turned back.
"So we make her calculate."
Harold's eyes narrowed.
"What are you thinking?"
Jonathan looked around the room.
"We stop chasing her."
Everyone stared.
"We make her come to us."
The Bait
Late that evening, Jonathan gathered only the people he completely trusted.
Michael.
Harold.
Dr. Lewis.
Margaret.
Elena.
Even Lucy sat quietly, listening from the corner.
Jonathan spread the recovered documents across the table.
"We tell Vivian we've found only part of the evidence."
Michael understood immediately.
"But hide the rest."
Jonathan nodded.
"The journal stays hidden."
"The videotape stays hidden."
"The second will stays hidden."
"And the photograph of Charles remains between us."
Harold smiled faintly.
"You want her to believe she's still ahead."
Jonathan's voice was calm.
"If she's protecting something..."
"...she'll try to destroy what she thinks we've found."
The Announcement
The following morning, Jonathan requested that every household employee gather in the grand sitting room.
Vivian entered last.
Elegant as always.
Her smile returned as though nothing had happened during the past two days.
Jonathan addressed everyone.
"After reviewing recent events, I've decided to hire independent investigators."
Vivian remained expressionless.
"They'll examine the accusations made against every member of this household."
He deliberately paused.
"So far..."
"...they've recovered several letters written by my mother."
Vivian's eyes flickered almost imperceptibly.
"And one old journal."
Nothing more.
Jonathan intentionally omitted the videotape.
The hidden will.
Emily's testimony.
The altered medication.
He watched Vivian closely.
She relaxed.
Only slightly.
But Michael noticed.
She believed they had very little.
Exactly as planned.
The Phone Call
That afternoon, Vivian excused herself, claiming she had a headache.
Michael quietly activated a small audio transmitter hidden inside a flower arrangement near her private sitting room.
Minutes later...
A voice came through the receiver.
Vivian.
"I need you to come tonight."
A man's voice answered.
"You said everything was under control."
"It was."
"But Jonathan found Margaret's journal."
Silence.
Then the man spoke again.
"Did he find the tape?"
"No."
"The hidden compartment?"
"No."
"Then don't panic."
Jonathan looked at Michael.
They had taken the bait.
There was another hidden compartment.
The Second Secret
That evening, Michael searched Vivian's private sitting room while she attended a charity board meeting.
The room appeared immaculate.
Too immaculate.
Nothing personal.
Nothing out of place.
Lucy quietly wandered inside with Elena.
She looked around for several moments.
Then pointed toward a large oil painting above the fireplace.
"The flowers."
Jonathan frowned.
"What about them?"
"They're backwards."
Everyone looked closer.
Every painting in the mansion faced toward the center of the room.
Only this bouquet faced the opposite direction.
Michael lifted it from the wall.
Behind it was a digital keypad.
Six numbers.
Harold smiled grimly.
"Another secret."
Guessing the Code
"What would Vivian use?" Michael asked.
Birthdays failed.
Anniversary dates failed.
Company founding dates failed.
The keypad emitted an angry beep after each incorrect attempt.
Only three tries remained.
Everyone fell silent.
Lucy suddenly whispered,
"The picture."
Jonathan looked at her.
"What picture?"
"The little boy."
Daniel.
Michael quickly entered the date written on the back of the hidden photograph.
061206
June 12, 2006.
Click.
The wall unlocked.
The Hidden Safe
A steel door slowly swung open.
Inside rested several passports.
Stacks of cash.
A satellite phone.
Three USB drives.
And a thick black folder labeled:
CALLAWAY PROJECT
Jonathan carefully opened it.
The first pages listed offshore bank accounts.
The next detailed shell companies.
Then came something far more disturbing.
Photographs.
Dozens of them.
Margaret entering doctor's offices.
Jonathan leaving business meetings.
Emily Brooks walking through parking lots.
Every member of the Hayes family had been watched.
For years.
The final photograph stopped Jonathan cold.
It showed Lucy.
Standing outside her elementary school.
The image had been taken only two weeks earlier.
Elena gasped.
"My daughter..."
Jonathan's voice hardened.
"This isn't blackmail anymore."
"It's surveillance."
Michael examined the remaining papers.
One document stood out.
It contained only three names.
Each had a box beside it.
Emily Brooks.
Checked.
Margaret Hayes.
Checked.
Lucy Parker.
Unchecked.
The room fell silent.
Elena pulled Lucy tightly into her arms.
Jonathan slowly looked toward Michael.
"They were planning something."
Before anyone could respond, alarms suddenly blared throughout the mansion.
Michael's radio crackled.
"Security breach!"
"Report!"
The frantic guard shouted,
"Mrs. Hayes just returned!"
Jonathan frowned.
"So?"
The answer froze everyone in the room.
"Sir..."
"She didn't come alone."
Jonathan's pulse quickened.
"Who is with her?"
The guard's voice trembled.
"A man matching Charles Calloway's description..."
May you like
"...and they're heading straight for the library."
