CHAPTER 1 — The Woman Behind the Scar

CHAPTER 1 — The Woman Behind the Scar
The first thing Della Marsh noticed when she opened her eyes was the sound of rain.
Not the soft, peaceful kind.
The violent kind.
The kind that struck windows like impatient fingers.
For a few seconds, she did not know where she was.
Then the memories returned.
The mirror.
The marble floor.
The pain in her stomach.
Cordelia Vance's hand.
And Luca Moretti.
The name alone felt unreal.
Luca Moretti.
The man whose face appeared in newspapers.
The man people whispered about at expensive restaurants.
The man whose name made executives lower their voices.
The man who owned the hotel where she had nearly collapsed.
Della slowly turned her head.
White hospital walls surrounded her.
A heart monitor beeped beside the bed.
A nurse stood near the window, checking her chart.
"Mrs. Marsh?"
Della blinked.
"I'm not..."
She stopped.
The nurse smiled gently.
"It's okay. Many people assume things."
Della looked down.
Her hand immediately moved toward her stomach.
"My baby?"
The nurse's expression softened.
"Your baby is okay."
A breath she did not realize she was holding finally escaped.
"Thank God."
For several minutes, Della simply lay there.
Alive.
Her baby alive.
That was enough.
Everything else could wait.
Except one thing.
The man sitting beside the hospital door.
She had noticed him the moment she woke.
Black suit.
Still posture.
Silent.
Two security officers stood outside the room.
Della frowned.
"Why is he here?"
The nurse looked toward the door.
Then lowered her voice.
"Mr. Moretti insisted."
Della looked away.
Of course he did.
She remembered his hands.
Not in a threatening way.
In a careful way.
The way he had wrapped her injured palm.
The way he had looked at her scar like he was seeing a ghost.
The door opened.
The man entered.
Luca Moretti.
Without the crowd around him, he looked different.
Less like a powerful businessman.
More like someone carrying a weight nobody else could see.
"How are you feeling?"
His voice was calm.
Della pushed herself slightly higher.
"I'm fine."
Luca's expression changed.
Not much.
But enough.
He had heard that answer before.
From people who were not fine.
"You almost lost consciousness."
"I'm okay now."
"You were pushed into a glass mirror while pregnant."
Della looked down.
The words sounded worse when someone else said them.
Luca pulled a chair closer.
"Why didn't you tell anyone?"
Della looked confused.
"Tell anyone what?"
"Who you are."
A pause.
Della almost laughed.
"Who am I?"
The question surprised him.
"You don't know?"
She looked at him.
"I'm Della Marsh."
Simple.
No pride.
No attempt to impress.
Just the truth.
Luca studied her.
Eight years.
Eight years of searching.
Eight years of wondering whether the woman who saved him was alive.
Eight years of asking why she disappeared.
And now she was sitting in front of him.
Not wearing expensive clothes.
Not living a glamorous life.
Working a banquet job while pregnant.
"You saved my life."
Della became quiet.
"I remember helping someone."
"Someone?"
Her eyes moved toward the window.
"It was a long time ago."
November seventeenth.
Fulton Street.
Eight years earlier.
Della had been twenty-four.
She had just finished a late shift at a small restaurant.
It was cold.
The kind of cold that made the city feel empty.
She was carrying a paper bag with leftover bread when she heard something.
A sound.
Not loud.
Almost hidden.
A person falling.
She found him behind an abandoned building.
A stranger.
Bleeding.
Barely conscious.
His expensive coat was torn.
His watch alone probably cost more than Della's entire apartment.
But she did not think about money.
She thought about life.
"Hey."
No response.
She dropped her bag.
"Hey, can you hear me?"
The man opened his eyes.
Barely.
"Leave."
Della remembered being offended.
"Excuse me?"
"You don't know who I am."
"I know you're bleeding."
He almost smiled.
Almost.
Then he lost consciousness.
Della should have walked away.
Everyone would have understood.
A young woman alone at night.
A dangerous-looking man.
Blood.
Risk.
But she stayed.
She pressed her jacket against his wound.
Called emergency services.
Held his hand.
Kept talking.
"Don't close your eyes."
She remembered saying that.
Over and over.
"What's your name?"
No answer.
"Okay. Fine. Don't tell me."
A pause.
"But I'm still not letting you die."
The ambulance arrived.
Before the doctors took him away, he grabbed her wrist.
Weakly.
His eyes opened.
"Why?"
Della looked confused.
"Why what?"
"Why help me?"
She had answered without thinking.
"Because someone should."
Then she disappeared.
Not because she wanted to.
Because her life changed overnight.
Her mother became seriously ill.
Medical bills consumed everything.
The hospital called constantly.
The restaurant cut her hours.
And by the time she tried searching for the injured man, she had no information.
No name.
No hospital.
Nothing.
She never knew who he was.
Until today.
Della looked at Luca.
"You were him."
He nodded.
"Yes."
She shook her head slowly.
"I didn't know."
"I know."
"You never told me."
"You never gave me a chance."
There was no accusation in his voice.
Only sadness.
Della looked away.
"I didn't do anything special."
Luca stared at her.
"You stayed with a dying stranger."
"I thought you were going to die."
"I almost did."
Silence.
"Why didn't you take the reward?"
Della looked back.
"What reward?"
Luca almost smiled.
"The one I offered."
She frowned.
"I never knew."
That surprised him.
He had spent years believing she rejected him.
But the truth was simpler.
She never knew.
"I searched for you."
The words escaped before he could stop them.
Della looked at him.
"Why?"
Because nobody had ever done what she did.
Because everyone else saw danger.
She saw a person.
Because during the darkest moment of his life, a stranger gave him something his own family had not given him.
Compassion.
But Luca Moretti was not a man who explained his feelings easily.
So he only said:
"Because I owed you."
Della shook her head.
"You don't owe me anything."
His expression hardened slightly.
"You don't get to decide that."
The answer surprised her.
Not because it was rude.
Because it sounded personal.
Before Della could respond, the hospital room door opened.
A doctor entered.
"Mrs. Marsh?"
Della turned.
"We reviewed your examination."
Her heart tightened.
"Is something wrong?"
The doctor looked serious.
"The baby is stable."
Relief.
"But..."
Della froze.
"The impact caused some stress. We need you monitored for at least twenty-four hours."
Della closed her eyes.
Twenty-four hours meant missing work.
Missing work meant losing pay.
Losing pay meant—
Luca noticed.
"What is it?"
"Nothing."
Again.
That word.
Nothing.
"Della."
She looked at him.
"Tell me."
She hesitated.
Then quietly said:
"I can't afford to miss work."
For the first time, Luca looked genuinely confused.
"You were attacked."
"I know."
"You are pregnant."
"I know."
"You nearly lost your child."
Her eyes lowered.
"I know."
"Then why are you worried about work?"
Della gave a small, tired smile.
"Because the world doesn't stop being expensive just because something terrible happens."
The sentence stayed with him.
Because Luca Moretti lived in a world where problems were solved with money.
Della lived in a world where problems continued because she didn't have enough of it.
He stood.
"You're not going back to that job."
Della immediately shook her head.
"No."
"Della—"
"No."
The firmness surprised him.
"I appreciate what you did."
A pause.
"And I appreciate what you remember."
Another pause.
"But I don't need someone saving me."
Luca stared.
Most people wanted something from him.
Money.
Connections.
Protection.
Della was refusing all three.
"Then what do you need?"
The question came out quieter.
Della looked at him.
"Respect."
That answer affected him more than any request could have.
Outside the hospital room, Cordelia Vance watched through the glass.
She had not left.
Not yet.
Her dress had been replaced.
Her makeup was perfect.
But her confidence was gone.
Because she had discovered something terrifying.
Della Marsh was not protected because she was powerful.
She was protected because she mattered.
And Luca Moretti had spent eight years looking for her.
Cordelia picked up her phone.
"Evan."
Her fiancé answered immediately.
"Where are you?"
She ignored the question.
"Find out everything about Della Marsh."
Silence.
"Why?"
Cordelia looked through the glass.
At the pregnant woman lying in the hospital bed.
At Luca Moretti standing beside her.
"Because I need to know what she has."
But Cordelia was asking the wrong question.
Della had no secret fortune.
No hidden empire.
No powerful title.
What Della had was something Cordelia had never understood.
Something money could not buy.
A person who remembered her kindness.
And that was far more dangerous.
Because Luca Moretti was not protecting Della Marsh out of obligation anymore.
May you like
He was protecting her because, after eight years...
he had finally found the woman who reminded him that he was still human.
