CHAPTER 5 — The Secret Inside the Hospital Records

CHAPTER 5 — The Secret Inside the Hospital Records

The hospital records room was a place where secrets went to sleep.

Thousands of files.

Thousands of names.

Thousands of stories that began with pain and ended with silence.

Most people never thought about the rooms behind hospitals.

They saw the polished floors.

The smiling nurses.

The carefully arranged flowers in the lobby.

They did not see the hidden rooms where the truth was stored.

At 7:15 in the morning, Luca Moretti stood inside that room.

And he was looking for the truth.

The hospital director, Dr. Samuel Hayes, stood beside him with a tablet in his hand.

"Mr. Moretti, I understand your concern."

Luca looked at him.

"Do you?"

The doctor became quiet.

Because everyone understood when Luca Moretti asked a question, he was rarely looking for an explanation.

He was giving someone an opportunity to tell the truth before he found it himself.

"I reviewed Ms. Marsh's examination personally," Dr. Hayes said.

"Good."

"The baby is stable."

Luca nodded.

"But?"

The doctor hesitated.

"There was trauma."

The word settled heavily in the room.

"Explain."

"She experienced physical impact. The fall and the force against the mirror caused significant stress."

Luca's jaw tightened.

"Could she have lost the baby?"

A pause.

"Yes."

One word.

One answer.

One reality Luca had been trying not to imagine.

For eight years, Luca had lived with the memory of being unable to protect himself.

But now there was something different.

A woman who had protected him once...

had almost lost her child because nobody protected her.

"How close?"

The doctor looked down.

"Closer than we would like."

Silence.

The image appeared in Luca's mind.

Della on the marble floor.

Her hand around her stomach.

Her voice barely above a whisper.

"My baby."

Something cold moved through him.

"Show me the security report."

Dr. Hayes looked uncomfortable.

"The hotel investigation is ongoing."

"I didn't ask about the hotel."

Luca tapped the tablet.

"I asked about my hospital."

The doctor understood.

This was no longer a hotel incident.

This happened on property connected to him.

A few minutes later, another file appeared.

Patient: Della Marsh.

Luca looked through it carefully.

Then stopped.

"Why is this attached?"

Dr. Hayes looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

"What?"

Luca pointed.

"These records."

The doctor leaned closer.

There was a previous medical history.

Not pregnancy-related.

Something from years earlier.

November 17.

Eight years ago.

The same date.

Luca stared.

"She was treated here?"

Dr. Hayes frowned.

"I don't know."

"Find out."

The doctor immediately began searching.

Minutes passed.

Then his expression changed.

"Mr. Moretti..."

"Say it."

Dr. Hayes swallowed.

"Eight years ago, an unidentified male patient was brought into this hospital."

Luca's eyes narrowed.

"Me."

The doctor nodded slowly.

"Yes."

The room became silent.

"How is her name connected to my file?"

The doctor continued reading.

"There was a witness listed."

Luca leaned forward.

"Who?"

The doctor looked at the screen.

"Della Marsh."

For a moment, Luca said nothing.

Because he understood.

Della had not simply found him.

She had stayed.

She had signed documents.

She had answered questions.

She had sat beside him until doctors took over.

And nobody had ever told him.

"Why?"

Luca asked.

The doctor looked confused.

"Why what?"

"Why was her name hidden?"

That was when Dr. Hayes became uncomfortable.

"Mr. Moretti..."

"Why?"

The doctor took a breath.

"There was a request."

"From who?"

A pause.

"The patient."

Luca froze.

"Me?"

"No."

The doctor looked at him.

"From your family."

The temperature in the room seemed to drop.

"My family?"

The Moretti family had always been complicated.

Powerful.

Respected.

Feared.

But Luca knew one thing.

They protected their secrets.

"What request?"

The doctor hesitated.

"To remove the witness information from general access."

Luca stared.

"Why?"

The doctor did not answer immediately.

Because the answer was dangerous.

"Because someone did not want people knowing a young woman helped you that night."

Luca felt something shift.

Eight years.

He thought he had been searching for a woman.

But maybe someone had been hiding her.

Across town, Della was sitting in a small clinic room.

She had returned for a pregnancy check.

She hated hospitals.

Not because of doctors.

Because hospitals reminded her of everything she could not afford.

A nurse entered.

"Ms. Marsh?"

Della looked up.

"Yes?"

"Your appointment has been upgraded."

Della frowned.

"What does that mean?"

The nurse smiled.

"Your prenatal care is now covered."

Della immediately shook her head.

"No."

The nurse looked surprised.

"No?"

"I didn't request that."

"It has already been arranged."

Della's expression hardened.

"By who?"

The nurse hesitated.

"Mr. Moretti."

Della closed her eyes.

Of course.

When Luca entered the room later, he found her waiting.

Not angry.

Worse.

Disappointed.

"You did this."

Luca stopped.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because you need medical care."

"I need to choose my medical care."

He looked at her.

"Della—"

"No."

Her voice was calm.

But firm.

"You don't understand."

"Then explain."

She looked at him.

"When people have money, they think solving a problem means removing it."

Luca said nothing.

"But sometimes people don't need someone to erase their problems."

A pause.

"They need someone to stand beside them while they solve them."

The words stayed with him.

Because Luca had spent his entire life fixing things.

Buying solutions.

Removing obstacles.

But Della did not want a rescuer.

She wanted a partner.

"I am not trying to control you."

"Maybe not."

She softened slightly.

"But you are used to being the person who decides."

He could not argue.

Because she was right.

Later that evening, Luca returned to his office.

The old file was still on his desk.

Della Marsh.

The woman who saved him.

The woman his family had hidden.

His phone rang.

Adrian.

"Luca."

The urgency in his assistant's voice was immediate.

"What happened?"

"We found out why the records were changed."

Luca stood.

"Tell me."

A pause.

"It wasn't your father."

Luca's expression changed.

"Then who?"

Adrian answered quietly.

"It was your mother."

Silence.

Luca's mother had been dead for five years.

And yet somehow...

she had left behind one final secret.

"Why would she hide Della?"

Adrian hesitated.

"Because she knew who Della's father was."

Luca felt his heartbeat slow.

"Della doesn't have a listed father."

"I know."

Another pause.

"But the records suggest that information was deliberately removed."

Luca looked out at the city.

The woman he thought he had finally found...

was connected to his family in a way he never imagined.

And suddenly the question was no longer:

Who was Della Marsh?

May you like

The real question was:

Why had the Moretti family been afraid of her?
