CHAPTER 10 — The Woman Who Refused the Crown

CHAPTER 10 — The Woman Who Refused the Crown

The first thing Della noticed was not the photograph.

It was the woman's hands.

They were shaking.

Not the hands of someone bringing a threat.

Not the hands of someone who had come to demand something.

They were the hands of someone carrying a burden for far too long.

Della stood inside her apartment doorway, unable to move.

The woman in front of her looked like a stranger.

But somehow...

she also looked familiar.

"Who are you?"

Della asked again.

The woman swallowed.

"My name is Clara Moretti."

The world seemed to stop.

Della had heard that name before.

Everyone had.

Moretti.

The name connected to power.

Money.

Influence.

Secrets.

But the woman standing in front of her did not look powerful.

She looked tired.

"I don't understand."

Clara looked down at the photograph in her hand.

"Your mother wanted you to live a normal life."

Della's expression changed.

"My mother?"

"Yes."

"How do you know my mother?"

Clara took a slow breath.

"Because Evelyn was my sister."

Silence.

Della felt like the floor had shifted beneath her.

"My mother had a sister?"

Clara nodded.

"She spent her entire life making sure nobody knew."

"Why?"

The question came out immediately.

Why would someone hide their own family?

Why would someone erase their own history?

Clara looked at her.

"Because the Moretti name was not always a blessing."

Across the city, Luca was hearing the same truth from Daniel.

"Evelyn Marsh was born Evelyn Moretti."

Luca stared.

"No."

Daniel nodded.

"Your father's older sister."

The words hit harder than expected.

"My aunt."

"Yes."

Luca walked away from the table.

His mind was moving faster than he could control.

Della.

The woman who saved him.

The woman his mother hid.

The woman carrying a child connected to him through blood.

Everything was connected.

"Why didn't my family tell me?"

Daniel looked down.

"Because your father believed power destroyed people."

Luca turned.

"My father?"

Daniel nodded.

"He watched the Moretti family lose itself chasing control."

A pause.

"He wanted someone in the family to escape."

"And Evelyn?"

"She did."

Back at Della's apartment, Clara sat quietly.

She did not touch anything.

She did not act entitled.

That surprised Della.

Because every story she had heard about wealthy families involved people taking.

Taking space.

Taking control.

Taking from others.

Clara simply waited.

"My mother never told me."

Della whispered.

"No."

"Why?"

Clara looked heartbroken.

"Because she loved you."

Della almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was painful.

"People always say that."

Clara looked at her.

"Who?"

"People who leave."

The answer was quiet.

"My mother died."

A pause.

"She didn't choose to leave."

Della looked away.

"I know."

But grief did not always listen to logic.

Clara reached into her bag.

She placed an old journal on the table.

"This belonged to Evelyn."

Della froze.

"My mother's?"

"Yes."

"Why do you have it?"

"Because she asked me to keep it until you were ready."

Della looked at the journal.

"Ready for what?"

Clara's voice softened.

"The truth."

That night, Della read the first page.

The handwriting was unmistakably her mother's.

If you are reading this, my little girl, then I failed to keep you away from this world.

Della's eyes filled.

I wanted you to have a life where people loved you because of who you were.

Not because of your name.*

She continued reading.

The Moretti name gives people power.

But power attracts people who want to own you.

I wanted you free.

Della pressed the journal against her chest.

Her mother had not abandoned her.

She had protected her.

The next morning, Luca arrived.

He found Della sitting by the window.

The journal was open beside her.

"You knew."

It was not an accusation.

But it hurt.

Luca stopped.

"What?"

"You knew there was something about my family."

"I suspected."

"But you didn't tell me."

"Della—"

"No."

She stood.

For the first time, Luca saw anger in her eyes.

"I spent my entire life believing I had nobody."

A pause.

"And all this time there were people who knew?"

Luca had no defense.

Because she was right.

"I was trying to protect you."

Della shook her head.

"That's what everyone says."

Silence.

"The people who hide things from me always say they are protecting me."

The words cut deeper than anger.

Because Luca realized something.

He had become dangerously close to becoming the kind of person who controlled her life.

The very thing she feared.

"I'm sorry."

Della looked at him.

A billionaire.

A man feared by others.

A man who could make entire companies disappear.

And he was apologizing.

Not because he lost.

Because he understood.

"I don't want a crown."

Della whispered.

Luca looked at her.

"What?"

"I don't want their money."

A pause.

"I don't want their buildings."

Another pause.

"I don't want people bowing because of my last name."

She touched her stomach.

"I just want my child to grow up knowing love."

Luca watched her.

And in that moment, he understood something.

Della was more powerful than every person fighting over her inheritance.

Because everyone else wanted the crown.

She was the only one who could refuse it.

Later that day, the Moretti family gathered.

The announcement was simple.

Della Marsh was the rightful heir to the original Moretti family estate.

The media exploded.

The public reacted.

The Vance family panicked.

Because they had prepared to fight a poor pregnant woman.

They had not prepared to fight someone who had the legal right to challenge everything they built.

Richard Vance threw the newspaper across the room.

"Impossible."

His attorney looked nervous.

"It has been verified."

"By who?"

"Independent investigators."

Richard's face darkened.

"And Luca?"

The attorney hesitated.

"He supports her."

Cordelia stood near the window.

For the first time, she did not look angry.

She looked afraid.

Because she finally understood.

Della had never wanted their world.

But their world had attacked her anyway.

And now the woman they ignored had the power to take everything.

Except she didn't want to.

That was what made her dangerous.

That evening, Luca found Della outside the garden.

"You could have everything."

Della looked at him.

"No."

"You could."

She smiled faintly.

"That's the difference between us."

"What?"

"You think having everything means owning everything."

A pause.

"I think having everything means knowing what you cannot lose."

Luca looked at her.

"And what can you not lose?"

Della placed his hand gently over her stomach.

"The people who choose me."

For once, Luca Moretti had no answer.

Because the woman who had inherited an empire...

was the first person he knew who had no desire to rule.

And that was exactly why the next battle would be harder.

The Vances could fight money.

They could fight lawyers.

May you like

They could fight power.

But how do you fight someone who does not want anything from you?
