CHAPTER 6 — The Billionaire’s Promise

CHAPTER 6 — The Billionaire’s Promise
Luca Moretti had built his entire life around promises.
Most people thought powerful men became powerful because they were willing to break promises.
Luca knew better.
A promise was not valuable because it was spoken.
A promise was valuable because of what a person was willing to sacrifice to keep it.
For years, Luca had made promises to business partners.
To investors.
To employees.
To people who depended on him.
But none of those promises had ever felt as serious as the one he made standing outside Della Marsh's apartment.
It was raining again.
Just like the night he found her.
Just like the night she saved him.
Della stood in the doorway, confused.
"Luca?"
He looked at her.
There was something different in his expression.
Not the cold businessman.
Not the man who controlled entire companies with a phone call.
Just a man.
"What happened?"
She immediately knew something was wrong.
"Nothing happened to you."
The answer should have comforted her.
Instead, it made her more suspicious.
"Then why are you here?"
Luca looked past her.
At the small apartment.
The old furniture.
The quiet life she had built.
A life that had somehow survived without anyone protecting it.
"Because I need to tell you something."
Della stepped aside.
"Come in."
He entered.
The apartment was simple.
Clean.
Warm.
Different from his world.
Luca Moretti owned buildings where people paid thousands of dollars a night to sleep.
But this small apartment felt more like a home than any place he had ever lived.
Della sat down carefully.
Her pregnancy was beginning to show more.
Luca noticed.
He noticed everything now.
"What is it?"
He hesitated.
That alone frightened her.
Luca Moretti did not hesitate.
"My family hid information about you."
Della frowned.
"What?"
"Eight years ago."
A pause.
"When you saved me."
Her expression changed.
"What kind of information?"
"Your name."
She stared.
"Why?"
"I don't know yet."
That answer surprised her.
"You don't know?"
"No."
For the first time, Della saw something unusual.
Luca Moretti did not look powerful.
He looked lost.
"My mother changed hospital records."
Della became quiet.
"Your mother?"
"Yes."
"Why would she care about me?"
Luca had asked himself that same question.
"I don't know."
The room became silent.
Della looked down.
Her hand rested over her stomach.
"So what now?"
Luca looked at her.
"Now I make sure nobody ever hurts you again."
Della immediately shook her head.
"No."
He blinked.
"No?"
"I appreciate that."
A pause.
"But no."
Luca almost smiled.
She was the only person who could reject him without fear.
"Della—"
"No."
She looked at him.
"You keep saying that like protection is something you give someone."
"What is it then?"
"Something they choose."
The answer stayed between them.
Luca had spent his life deciding what was best for others.
Della was teaching him that love without choice was just another kind of control.
"I am not trying to control you."
"I know."
She softened.
"I believe you."
That mattered.
More than she realized.
"But I need you to understand something."
Luca waited.
"I survived before you found me."
The words hit him.
Not because they hurt.
Because they were true.
Della continued.
"I survived losing my mother."
"I survived being ignored."
"I survived people treating me like I was less important."
She looked directly at him.
"I don't need someone to turn me into a princess."
A pause.
"I need someone who remembers I'm already a person."
For several seconds, Luca said nothing.
Then he nodded.
Slowly.
"Okay."
Della looked surprised.
"Okay?"
"Okay."
He sat across from her.
"Then I promise something different."
"What?"
"I won't make decisions for you."
A pause.
"I will stand beside you."
Della looked at him.
Trying to decide if she believed him.
Luca Moretti was many things.
Dangerous.
Powerful.
Intimidating.
But right now, he was simply a man asking her to trust him.
"I don't know if I can."
"I know."
The honesty surprised her.
"But I will give you time."
That was the first promise Luca made that wasn't about power.
It was about patience.
The next morning, the Vance family learned about Luca's decision.
Richard Vance stared at the report in disbelief.
"He is protecting her?"
The lawyer nodded.
"Yes."
"Why?"
Nobody answered.
Because they all knew the reason.
Della Marsh mattered.
And that made her dangerous.
Cordelia entered the room.
"What happened?"
Richard looked at his daughter.
"Moretti has made his decision."
"So?"
"He is standing with her."
Cordelia laughed.
"Over a waitress?"
Richard's expression hardened.
"You still don't understand."
"What?"
"You think her importance comes from her status."
A pause.
"It doesn't."
Cordelia looked annoyed.
"Then what makes her important?"
Richard answered quietly:
"She was kind to him before she knew he was powerful."
The room became silent.
Because everyone understood the difference.
Meanwhile, Della received another surprise.
A letter.
No sender.
No company logo.
Just her name.
Inside was an old photograph.
Her mother.
Evelyn Marsh.
Standing beside another person.
Della froze.
Because she recognized him.
Not from memory.
From the news.
The man beside her mother was:
Anthony Moretti.
Luca's father.
Her hands began shaking.
There was a handwritten note beneath the photograph.
Della, if you are reading this, then the truth has finally found you.
She stopped breathing.
Another line.
I am sorry I kept this from you.
Her eyes moved lower.
Your father was never the man you were told he was.
Della stared.
The baby moved beneath her hand.
And suddenly the entire world she understood began shifting.
Because the woman who believed she had no family...
might have been connected to one of the most powerful families in the country.
At the same time, Luca received a message from Adrian.
We found the missing records.
A second message followed.
Della Marsh is not unrelated to the Moretti family.
Luca stared at the screen.
Then the final message arrived.
She is the last living person connected to the original Moretti inheritance.
For the first time in years...
Luca Moretti had no idea what tomorrow would bring.
May you like
Because he had promised to protect Della.
But he never expected that protecting her would mean protecting the woman who might inherit everything he owned.
