CHAPTER 9 — The War Between Two Families

CHAPTER 9 — The War Between Two Families

The war between the Morettis and the Vances did not begin with a gunshot.

It began with silence.

A contract left unsigned.

A phone call not returned.

A meeting canceled without explanation.

A door that had always opened suddenly locked.

That was how powerful families fought.

Not with noise.

With pressure.

And by Monday morning, the entire city knew something was happening.

The newspapers called it a business dispute.

The analysts called it a corporate conflict.

The investors called it a risk.

But the people closest to both families knew the truth.

This was personal.

At the center of everything stood one woman.

Della Marsh.

The same woman who had spent most of her life trying not to be noticed.

Now her name appeared beside two of the most powerful families in the country.

And she hated every second of it.

"I don't want this."

Della's voice was quiet.

Luca looked across the table at her.

They were sitting inside a private room at one of his restaurants.

A place where nobody could interrupt them.

"I know."

"Do you?"

The question made him pause.

Della looked down.

"I spent my whole life trying to build something simple."

A hand moved protectively over her stomach.

"A home."

"A safe place."

"A normal life."

She looked around the expensive room.

"This isn't normal."

Luca understood.

Because his entire life had been the opposite.

Normal had never been an option for him.

"I never wanted you involved in this."

Della looked at him.

"But I already am."

The truth hurt because it was undeniable.

The moment Cordelia pushed her into that mirror, everything changed.

But Luca knew something else.

The moment he found her again...

his life changed too.

"I can make it stop."

Della immediately shook her head.

"No."

Luca frowned.

"No?"

"Not like that."

"What do you mean?"

"You can't destroy everyone who hurts me."

The sentence was simple.

But it carried weight.

Because Luca knew she was talking about more than the Vances.

She was talking about him.

The part of him that solved every problem through power.

"Della—"

"I know who you are."

A pause.

"I know people are afraid of you."

Luca became still.

"But I don't want to become another person who only feels safe because everyone else is scared."

That sentence followed him for days.

Because nobody had ever challenged the foundation of his entire world.

Meanwhile, the Vance family was preparing their attack.

Richard Vance stood in the family conference room.

The same room where generations of Vances had celebrated victories.

Now everyone looked worried.

"We have one advantage."

The family attorney said.

Richard looked up.

"What?"

"Della Marsh."

The room became quiet.

"What about her?"

The attorney opened a file.

"If we prove the Moretti family hid information about her identity, we can create public doubt."

Richard frowned.

"You want to attack her?"

"No."

A pause.

"We attack the story."

The attorney continued.

"The public loves a hero until they discover the hero has secrets."

Richard looked at the documents.

For the first time, he wondered if they were making another mistake.

Because Della was not like them.

She did not seek attention.

She did not chase power.

Trying to destroy her might only reveal exactly why people respected her.

But Cordelia had no such hesitation.

"Do it."

Everyone looked at her.

She stood near the doorway.

"Release everything."

Richard stared.

"Cordelia."

"No."

Her voice was cold.

"She took everything from me."

The room went silent.

Evan, standing behind her, looked disappointed.

"She didn't take anything from you."

Cordelia turned.

"Excuse me?"

"You did that yourself."

The words shocked everyone.

Because Evan had spent his entire life avoiding confrontation.

Not anymore.

"You hurt her because you thought she was beneath you."

A pause.

"You lost because you believed your name mattered more than your actions."

Cordelia stared.

And for the first time, she realized something.

She was losing everyone.

That night, Daniel Reed arrived at the Moretti estate.

Luca was waiting.

The two men stood facing each other.

One powerful.

One desperate.

"You know why I'm here."

Daniel said.

Luca looked at him.

"Yes."

"You want revenge."

"No."

The answer surprised him.

"I want answers."

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"From me?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

Luca stepped closer.

"Because Della deserves the truth."

Daniel looked away.

For the first time, guilt appeared on his face.

"I never wanted to hurt her."

Luca's expression hardened.

"But you did."

"I had no choice."

"There is always a choice."

Daniel was silent.

Then he finally said:

"They threatened me."

"Who?"

Daniel looked at him.

"Your family."

The words were expected.

Still, they hurt.

"My father?"

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

"Your mother."

Luca froze.

Again.

His dead mother.

The woman whose secrets seemed to continue controlling his life even after death.

"Why?"

Daniel swallowed.

"Because she knew about Della."

"How?"

"Because Della wasn't just some woman who helped you."

A pause.

"She was connected to the Moretti family before you ever met her."

Luca's eyes narrowed.

"Explain."

Daniel looked at him.

"Her mother was Evelyn Marsh."

"I know."

"No."

Daniel shook his head.

"You don't."

He took a breath.

"Evelyn wasn't just a woman who worked three jobs."

A pause.

"She was once part of the Moretti family."

Silence.

"Impossible."

"Her name was changed."

"Why?"

Daniel answered:

"Because she ran."

At that moment, across the city, Della opened the door.

The woman standing outside looked older.

Tired.

But familiar.

"Della."

She could barely speak.

"Who are you?"

The woman's eyes filled with tears.

"I'm the person your mother spent her entire life trying to protect you from."

Della stepped back.

"What?"

The woman held out an old photograph.

A photograph of Evelyn Marsh.

A photograph of the Moretti family.

And a young girl.

Della.

But the date on the back made her heart stop.

Because it was taken years before Della was born.

Meanwhile, Luca stared at Daniel.

"Tell me everything."

Daniel looked exhausted.

"Your family didn't hide Della because she was dangerous."

A pause.

"They hid her because she was the rightful heir."

The room went silent.

Luca understood.

The Vance family thought they were fighting a woman with no power.

They were wrong.

They were fighting someone connected to an empire older than theirs.

And the woman at the center of the war...

still had no idea who she truly was.
