CHAPTER 11 — WHAT CLAIRE DID

CHAPTER 11 — WHAT CLAIRE DID

The scream vanished into darkness.

Then came the sound of something heavy striking the floor.

Richard reached for Claire.

“Claire!”

“I’m here!”

Her voice came from only a few feet away.

He caught her hand.

She was trembling violently.

The emergency lights flickered on.

For one terrible second, everyone stood frozen.

Then Richard saw the blood.

Not on Claire.

On Daniel.

He was lying against the vault door, one hand pressed against his side.

Jonathan was already moving toward him.

“What happened?”

Daniel shook his head.

“Not me.”

Richard looked around.

“Where is Eleanor?”

No one answered.

The woman was gone.

So was Sophia.

And the silver seal was missing from Richard's hand.

Richard looked down.

His fingers were empty.

“Where's the seal?”

Claire stared at him.

“I don't know.”

Then Isabelle screamed.

“Richard!”

He turned.

She was pointing toward the center of the vault.

The glass case had shattered.

Inside it, beneath the broken glass, was a small black envelope.

Richard approached slowly.

His name was written across it.

But beneath his name were three words.

FOR THE FOURTH HEIR.

Richard didn't touch it.

Claire stepped closer.

“No.”

He looked at her.

“What?”

“Don't open it.”

“Why?”

“Because Eleanor wanted us to find it.”

Richard stared at the envelope.

“You're right.”

Jonathan struggled to stand.

“She's setting a trap.”

Daniel nodded.

“She always does.”

Richard looked at Claire.

“Then why leave it here?”

Claire's eyes remained fixed on the envelope.

“Because she wants us to think the trap is the envelope.”

Richard frowned.

“What else?”

Claire pointed toward the ceiling.

“The vault.”

Everyone looked up.

Tiny red lights were blinking.

Cameras.

Dozens of them.

Claire whispered:

“She isn't watching the vault.”

“She is watching us.”

Richard's phone suddenly rang.

Everyone froze.

The screen showed an unknown number.

He answered.

“Who is this?”

A woman's voice replied.

“You.”

Richard's face hardened.

“Eleanor.”

A soft laugh.

“No.”

Richard frowned.

“Then who?”

The woman whispered:

“Your mother.”

The call ended.

Richard stared at the screen.

Claire stepped closer.

“Richard…”

He couldn't speak.

Thomas moved forward.

“Give me the phone.”

Richard handed it over.

Thomas looked at the number.

His face changed.

“That number hasn't existed in twenty years.”

Richard swallowed.

“Then who called me?”

Thomas looked toward the locked chamber.

“Someone who knows your mother's old code.”

Richard turned.

“The code?”

Thomas nodded.

“Every member of the original family had one.”

“What was Elena's?”

Thomas hesitated.

“Claire.”

Everyone looked at her.

Claire went still.

“Me?”

Thomas nodded.

“Elena chose that name for a reason.”

Richard stared at Claire.

“What does that mean?”

Thomas looked at him.

“Your mother named her final daughter Claire.”

Silence.

Claire's eyes widened.

“No.”

Thomas nodded.

“She was supposed to be the fourth heir.”

Richard stared.

“But you said my child was the fourth heir.”

Thomas looked toward Claire.

“I said what Eleanor wanted us to believe.”

Claire slowly stepped backward.

Richard followed her.

“What aren't you telling me?”

Claire shook her head.

“I don't know.”

“Claire.”

“I swear.”

She was crying now.

“I don't know what they're talking about.”

Richard looked at Thomas.

“Tell me.”

Thomas lowered his eyes.

“Claire isn't who you think she is.”

Richard's face hardened.

“What does that mean?”

Thomas whispered:

“She is Elena's daughter.”

The room seemed to tilt.

Richard stared at Claire.

“My sister?”

Claire covered her mouth.

“No.”

Thomas continued:

“She was born three years after you.”

Richard shook his head.

“You're lying.”

“I wish I were.”

Claire looked at Richard.

“I didn't know.”

Richard's voice cracked.

“Then who raised you?”

Claire wiped her tears.

“My parents.”

Thomas shook his head.

“Not your biological parents.”

Claire stared.

“Who?”

Thomas looked toward Daniel.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I did.”

Claire turned toward him.

“You?”

Daniel nodded.

“I took you away.”

“Why?”

“Because Elena asked me to.”

Claire shook her head.

“Why would she give me away?”

“Because she knew what would happen if Eleanor found you.”

Richard looked between them.

“So Claire has Blackwood blood.”

Daniel nodded.

“And she's an heir.”

Richard's expression changed.

“How many heirs are there?”

Thomas answered:

“Five.”

Everyone froze.

“Five?”

Thomas nodded.

“Richard.”

“Isabelle.”

“Sophia.”

“Claire.”

“And the child.”

Richard stared at Claire.

“So Eleanor wants the baby because…”

“Because the child is the only heir who can unite the bloodlines.”

Claire's face went pale.

“Why?”

Thomas pointed toward the silver seal.

“The original trust was divided when the family began killing its own heirs.”

“What does the baby have?”

“The blood of two branches.”

Richard looked at Claire.

“You and me.”

Thomas nodded.

“Your child would carry both.”

Claire instinctively placed a hand over her stomach.

“No.”

Richard stepped beside her.

“She won't touch our child.”

Thomas's eyes darkened.

“You don't understand Eleanor.”

Richard's voice became cold.

“I understand enough.”

“She has been waiting for this for twenty years.”

“Then she'll wait forever.”

The vault began shaking again.

A deep rumble passed beneath the floor.

Jonathan looked toward the entrance.

“We need to leave.”

Daniel nodded.

“Now.”

Richard grabbed Claire's hand.

They moved toward the corridor.

Then Isabelle appeared.

She was holding the missing silver seal.

“Stop.”

Richard froze.

“Give it to me.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“Isabelle.”

“You don't understand what this thing does.”

“Then tell me.”

She looked at Claire.

“It doesn't just open the trust.”

“What does it do?”

“It chooses the bloodline.”

Richard stared.

“And?”

Isabelle's eyes filled with fear.

“If Claire carries your child…”

She swallowed.

“…the seal can erase every other heir.”

Silence.

Richard understood.

“The child would become the sole heir.”

“Yes.”

Claire shook her head.

“That's why Eleanor wants the baby.”

“No,” Isabelle said.

“That's why everyone wants the baby.”

A gunshot echoed.

Isabelle dropped the seal.

Richard pulled Claire down.

Another shot.

Jonathan fired back.

A man appeared at the end of the passage.

Black suit.

Black gloves.

Face covered.

Daniel whispered:

“Elias.”

Richard looked at him.

“Elias is dead.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

The masked man removed his hood.

An elderly face appeared.

Scarred.

Thin.

But unmistakable.

Richard stared.

The man smiled.

“I've been waiting for you.”

Thomas stepped forward.

“You.”

Elias looked at him.

“Brother.”

Thomas's face hardened.

“You should have died.”

Elias laughed.

“I did.”

He looked at Richard.

“But death was only useful while everyone believed it.”

Richard stepped forward.

“You killed my mother.”

“No.”

“You destroyed my family.”

“No.”

“You controlled Eleanor.”

“No.”

Richard's voice rose.

“Then what did you do?”

Elias smiled.

“I created the conditions.”

Richard stared.

“For what?”

“For you.”

Elias raised his hand.

The masked men behind him lowered their weapons.

“Richard, you have spent your entire life believing you were a victim.”

“You weren't.”

“You were an investment.”

Richard felt sick.

“What does that mean?”

Elias smiled.

“Your mother was chosen because of her blood.”

“Your father was chosen because of his loyalty.”

“Daniel was chosen because of his fear.”

“Claire was chosen because of her innocence.”

“And you…”

He paused.

“…were chosen because you could survive.”

Richard clenched his fists.

“I don't belong to you.”

“No.”

Elias looked toward Claire.

“But your child might.”

Claire stepped behind Richard.

Elias laughed.

“Exactly.”

Then Daniel stepped forward.

“Elias.”

The old man looked at him.

“You betrayed me.”

Daniel's face was grim.

“I betrayed everyone.”

“Why?”

Daniel looked at Richard.

“Because I finally realized what you were doing.”

Elias smiled.

“Too late.”

“No.”

Daniel reached into his coat.

Elias raised his weapon.

But Daniel wasn't holding a gun.

He held a small black drive.

“The complete records.”

Elias's smile disappeared.

“What did you do?”

“I copied everything.”

Daniel looked at Richard.

“Every account.”

“Every name.”

“Every transaction.”

“Every death.”

“Every child.”

“Every lie.”

Elias stared at him.

“You wouldn't.”

“I already did.”

Jonathan looked at Richard.

“If those records reach the authorities, the Blackwood network collapses.”

Elias laughed.

“You think I care?”

Daniel smiled.

“You should.”

He held up the drive.

“Because I sent a copy.”

Elias's face changed.

“To whom?”

Daniel looked at Claire.

“To the press.”

For the first time, Elias looked afraid.

“How long?”

Daniel smiled.

“Seven minutes.”

Elias looked at his watch.

Then at Richard.

“You have seven minutes to decide.”

“Decide what?”

“Whether you want your family destroyed.”

Richard stared.

“My family was destroyed long ago.”

“No.”

Elias's eyes hardened.

“Not yet.”

He pointed toward Claire.

“If those records are released, they will come for her.”

Richard froze.

“Who?”

“The people who built this.”

Elias lowered his weapon.

“They don't care about money.”

“What do they want?”

“Blood.”

He looked toward Claire's stomach.

“And the child.”

Richard stepped in front of her.

“You'll never get them.”

Elias smiled.

“Then watch.”

He pressed a button.

The vault doors began closing.

Behind them, a second explosion shook the chamber.

Claire screamed.

The ceiling cracked.

Richard grabbed her.

“Run!”

They raced toward the exit.

Jonathan carried Daniel.

Isabelle followed.

Thomas limped behind them.

The entire underground structure began collapsing.

They reached the stairs.

Richard pushed Claire upward.

Then stopped.

“Thomas!”

His father was trapped beneath a fallen beam.

Richard turned back.

“Go!”

Thomas shouted.

“Take Claire!”

“No.”

Richard lifted the beam.

Pain tore through his back.

Thomas pushed himself free.

They climbed.

Behind them, the vault collapsed.

The old family secrets disappeared beneath tons of stone.

But the truth had already escaped.

They emerged into the forest.

Sirens were approaching in the distance.

Claire stood beside Richard, shaking.

Daniel sat against a tree.

Jonathan remained beside him.

Isabelle stared toward the burning estate.

Thomas looked at Richard.

“It's over.”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

“What?”

“Elias is still alive.”

Thomas nodded.

“And Eleanor.”

“And Sophia.”

“And whoever else is behind them.”

Claire looked at Richard.

“And our child.”

Richard placed his hand over hers.

“We'll protect the baby.”

Claire looked at him.

“You're not angry?”

He stared at her.

“About what?”

“That I didn't tell you.”

“I believe you.”

She began crying.

“I should have known.”

“No.”

He touched her face.

“You were another victim of their lies.”

Claire shook her head.

“I remembered something.”

Richard frowned.

“What?”

“The first time I met you.”

He waited.

“You weren't a stranger.”

“What do you mean?”

“I had seen you before.”

“Where?”

“At the Blackwood house.”

“When?”

Claire's face went pale.

“When I was six.”

Richard stared.

“You were there?”

She nodded.

“I saw you through a basement window.”

Richard's heart tightened.

“You remember?”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

Claire whispered:

“You were crying.”

“Why?”

“Because someone had taken you away from your mother.”

Richard closed his eyes.

Claire continued.

“I wanted to help you.”

“What stopped you?”

“Eleanor.”

Richard opened his eyes.

“What did she say?”

Claire looked at him.

“She told me…”

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“…that if I ever told you I knew you, she would kill us both.”

Richard pulled her into his arms.

For the first time, the truth didn't feel like a weapon.

It felt like something they could finally carry together.

Three days later, the first news reports appeared.

The Blackwood network had collapsed.

Secret accounts were exposed.

Shell companies were seized.

Investigators uncovered decades of illegal activity.

Several officials resigned.

Others disappeared.

Elias vanished before authorities arrived.

Eleanor was nowhere to be found.

Sophia was also missing.

Isabelle stayed with Richard and Claire.

Thomas entered protective custody.

Daniel survived his injuries.

Jonathan refused to leave his side.

For the first time, the family was beginning to rebuild itself without secrets.

But one question remained.

Who had sent the final records to the press?

Daniel claimed he had.

Richard didn't believe him.

Then one night, Richard received an anonymous message.

YOU STILL DON'T KNOW WHAT CLAIRE DID.

He stared at the screen.

A second message appeared.

ASK HER ABOUT THE NIGHT YOUR MOTHER DISAPPEARED.

Richard's heart stopped.

Claire was asleep beside him.

He looked at her.

Then at the message.

Another arrived.

A photograph.

Claire.

Six years old.

Standing outside the Blackwood house.

Beside her stood Elena.

Alive.

And holding Claire's hand.

Richard stared at the photograph.

The timestamp was dated three years after Elena's supposed death.

His blood ran cold.

He turned toward Claire.

She opened her eyes.

“What happened?”

Richard held up the phone.

“Who took this photograph?”

Claire looked at it.

Her face drained of color.

“I don't know.”

“Claire.”

“I swear.”

Richard showed her the date.

She stared.

Then suddenly covered her mouth.

“I remember.”

Richard's heart pounded.

“What?”

Claire began trembling.

“The night Elena disappeared…”

She looked directly into his eyes.

“She didn't disappear.”

Richard froze.

“What are you saying?”

Claire whispered:

“She gave me something.”

“What?”

“A key.”

Richard's breathing stopped.

“Where is it?”

Claire looked toward the bedroom wall.

“I buried it.”

“Where?”

She pointed beneath the floorboards.

Richard tore them open.

A small metal box lay beneath them.

Inside was a key.

And a final photograph.

Richard picked it up.

It showed Elena.

Claire.

Richard.

And another child.

A newborn.

On the back, Elena had written:

I am sorry I lied.

Below it was one final sentence.

Richard, the child you think is yours was never meant to be yours.

Claire looked at him.

Neither spoke.

Then the bedroom door slowly opened.

A woman's voice whispered from the hallway.

“Now you know what Claire did.”

Richard turned.

Eleanor stood in the doorway.

May you like

Smiling.

And in her arms was a newborn baby.
