CHAPTER 5 — THE WOMAN BEHIND THE SMILE

CHAPTER 5 — THE WOMAN BEHIND THE SMILE
The paper trembled in Claire's hand.
YOUR REAL FATHER IS ALIVE.
For several seconds, no one spoke.
The emergency lights cast the basement in a sickly red glow.
Daniel lay motionless on the hospital bed, his eyes fixed on the doorway through which Evelyn had disappeared.
Richard stood beside him.
Claire stared at the message.
There was something about the handwriting.
It wasn't Evelyn's.
It wasn't Jonathan's.
It wasn't Daniel's.
She knew that because she had spent fifteen years studying Daniel's handwriting on letters he had left behind.
This handwriting was different.
Sharper.
More deliberate.
Almost elegant.
Claire turned the paper over.
Nothing.
“Who wrote this?” Richard asked.
Daniel closed his eyes.
His breathing became shallow.
Claire immediately moved toward him.
“Daniel.”
His eyes opened.
“Don't…”
“Don't what?”
“Don't look for him.”
Richard stepped closer.
“Who?”
Daniel swallowed.
“My father.”
Richard froze.
“Your father?”
Daniel nodded.
“The man everyone believes died thirty years ago.”
Claire's blood ran cold.
“Elias Blackwood.”
Daniel's eyes moved toward her.
“You remember.”
“I remember his portrait.”
“He wasn't my father.”
Claire stared.
“What?”
Daniel looked at Richard.
“He wasn't my biological father either.”
The room seemed to tilt.
Richard shook his head.
“Then who was?”
Daniel looked toward Margaret's empty chair.
“Margaret.”
Claire's eyes widened.
“Margaret knows.”
Daniel nodded.
“She always knew.”
Richard stepped backward.
“My mother knows who my real grandfather is?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did she let me believe Elias was my grandfather?”
“Because Elias controlled everything.”
Daniel's voice was weak.
“Money. The company. The police. The lawyers.”
He paused.
“People.”
Claire sat beside him.
“What happened fifteen years ago?”
Daniel looked at her.
“You already know.”
“No.”
“I remember the lake.”
“Tell me.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I remember Jonathan.”
“Your brother?”
“Yes.”
“He helped you?”
Daniel nodded.
“He discovered what Father had done.”
“What did he discover?”
Daniel looked at Richard.
“That you weren't supposed to exist.”
Richard frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
“Your birth was the beginning of the war.”
Years earlier, before Richard was born, Margaret had been a young woman working for the Blackwood family.
She met Daniel's father in secret.
Not Elias.
Another man.
A man whose name had been removed from every family record.
A man who owned more of the Blackwood fortune than anyone realized.
His name was Adrian Blackwood.
Elias's older brother.
The true founder of the family empire.
Adrian had disappeared after a dispute with Elias.
The family claimed he had died overseas.
He hadn't.
He had built a second life.
And Margaret had found him.
They fell in love.
Richard was born.
But Adrian never knew.
Elias discovered the pregnancy.
He gave Margaret a choice.
Give him the child—
or watch Adrian disappear forever.
Margaret chose her son.
But Elias lied.
Adrian disappeared anyway.
Margaret was told he was dead.
Richard was taken.
His identity was changed.
And the Blackwood family continued as if nothing had happened.
Until Daniel discovered the truth.
Richard listened without speaking.
When Daniel finished, he asked:
“Where is Adrian?”
Daniel looked toward Claire.
“That's what we spent fifteen years trying to discover.”
“And?”
Daniel smiled sadly.
“We found him.”
Claire's heart raced.
“Where?”
Daniel's expression changed.
“He found us first.”
The door opened.
Jonathan returned.
His shoulder was bleeding.
Claire stood.
“Where is Evelyn?”
“Gone.”
“Margaret?”
“Gone too.”
“Did you see them?”
“No.”
Richard turned toward him.
“Why did you let them escape?”
Jonathan's face hardened.
“I didn't.”
“Then who helped them?”
Jonathan hesitated.
Claire noticed.
“Jonathan.”
He looked at her.
“You're not going to like the answer.”
“Tell us.”
He sighed.
“Someone inside the Blackwood organization.”
Richard laughed bitterly.
“Of course.”
Jonathan stepped closer.
“There's a reason Evelyn always looked untouchable.”
Claire nodded.
“She had someone protecting her.”
“Not someone.”
Jonathan corrected.
“A group.”
Richard's expression darkened.
“How many?”
“Enough to bury three murders.”
Silence.
Claire looked at Daniel.
“Then why is Daniel still alive?”
Jonathan answered.
“Because they needed him.”
“For what?”
Jonathan looked at Richard.
“For you.”
Richard frowned.
“I don't understand.”
“Daniel was the only person who could legally identify you as his son.”
Richard stared.
“So they kept him alive to control my inheritance.”
Jonathan nodded.
“Exactly.”
Claire felt sick.
“They've been keeping him here for fifteen years.”
“Yes.”
“And who has been caring for him?”
Jonathan didn't answer.
Claire understood.
“The woman in the hospital records.”
Jonathan nodded.
“Evelyn.”
Claire's stomach turned.
“She kept him alive.”
“She kept him alive because she needed him.”
Daniel's eyes opened.
“She also hurt me.”
Richard looked at his father.
“How?”
Daniel looked away.
“She wanted me to sign documents.”
“What documents?”
“Documents saying you weren't my son.”
Richard's face hardened.
“And you refused.”
“Every time.”
Claire took Daniel's hand.
“You protected him.”
Daniel looked at her.
“I failed you.”
“No.”
“I left you alone.”
“You didn't have a choice.”
“I should have found a way.”
“You were imprisoned.”
Daniel looked at her.
“They told me you were dead.”
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
“They told me you were dead.”
For the first time, they understood.
They had both spent fifteen years mourning someone who was still alive.
Daniel squeezed her hand.
“I waited.”
“So did I.”
Richard looked away.
He couldn't watch them.
Not because he wasn't happy.
Because happiness was too painful after fifteen years of believing his father was dead.
Hours later, the basement had become a temporary command center.
Jonathan brought old files.
Claire examined them.
Most were financial records.
Some were medical.
Others were photographs.
Then she found something unexpected.
A photograph of Evelyn.
Young.
Beautiful.
Smiling.
Standing beside Adrian.
Claire stared.
“She's not just his sister-in-law.”
Jonathan looked over.
“No.”
“They were together.”
“Yes.”
Richard frowned.
“Together how?”
Jonathan looked at him.
“Evelyn loved Adrian.”
Claire's blood ran cold.
“She wanted him.”
“Yes.”
“But Adrian chose Margaret.”
Jonathan nodded.
“And that's where everything began.”
Evelyn hadn't destroyed the family because she wanted money.
She had destroyed it because she believed Margaret had stolen the life that should have been hers.
Adrian's love.
Adrian's child.
Adrian's inheritance.
Everything.
Claire stared at the photograph.
“The smile.”
Jonathan looked at her.
“What?”
“She smiled in every photograph.”
“Yes.”
“She was happy.”
“No.”
Jonathan shook his head.
“She was pretending.”
Claire understood.
The woman behind the smile had been angry for decades.
And she had learned to hide it better than anyone.
At dawn, Richard found Claire alone in the hallway.
“Do you trust Jonathan?”
Claire looked at him.
“I don't know.”
“Do you trust Daniel?”
“Yes.”
“Even after fifteen years?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because when he had the chance to save himself…”
She looked toward the basement.
“…he saved you.”
Richard nodded.
“I think I trust him too.”
They stood silently.
Then Richard asked:
“What about Margaret?”
Claire didn't answer.
“She gave me away.”
“She thought she was protecting you.”
“She let them change my name.”
“She was afraid.”
Richard looked at Claire.
“Are you defending her?”
“No.”
Claire shook her head.
“I'm trying to understand her.”
Richard looked away.
“I don't know if I can forgive her.”
“You don't have to.”
“What if she comes back?”
“She will.”
“How do you know?”
Claire looked toward the dark corridor.
“Because Evelyn isn't finished.”
That afternoon, Claire received a phone call.
Unknown number.
She answered.
“Hello?”
Nothing.
Then a woman's voice.
“You always were too curious.”
Claire froze.
“Evelyn.”
A soft laugh.
“Did you find him?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
“Where are you?”
“You know where.”
Claire's blood ran cold.
“No.”
“You've been there before.”
“What do you want?”
“I want my family back.”
“Your family?”
“Yes.”
“You destroyed it.”
“I protected it.”
“You murdered Daniel.”
“I didn't.”
Claire went silent.
“What?”
Evelyn's voice became colder.
“I didn't kill Daniel.”
“Then who did?”
A pause.
“You still haven't figured it out.”
Claire's heart pounded.
“Tell me.”
“I'll give you one clue.”
“What?”
“The man you think is helping you…”
Claire stopped breathing.
“…is the man who betrayed Daniel.”
The line went dead.
Claire stared at the phone.
Richard came running.
“What happened?”
She looked at him.
“Evelyn called.”
“What did she say?”
Claire swallowed.
“She said Jonathan betrayed Daniel.”
Richard shook his head.
“That's impossible.”
“I hope you're right.”
They walked back toward the basement.
Jonathan was standing beside Daniel's bed.
Claire watched him.
Something felt wrong.
Jonathan noticed her.
“What's wrong?”
Claire said nothing.
Then Daniel suddenly opened his eyes.
He looked at Jonathan.
His face filled with terror.
“Get him away from me.”
Everyone froze.
Jonathan stepped backward.
“Daniel?”
Daniel's voice shook.
“He's the one.”
Jonathan's face went pale.
Richard turned toward him.
“The one who betrayed you?”
Daniel nodded.
Jonathan stared at his brother.
“Daniel, no.”
But Daniel continued.
“He wasn't protecting you.”
“He was protecting himself.”
Jonathan's expression changed.
Claire stepped between them.
“What did you do?”
Jonathan looked at her.
For the first time, the calm mask disappeared.
“I can explain.”
Richard's voice was cold.
“Then explain.”
Jonathan took a breath.
“I didn't kill Daniel.”
Daniel whispered:
“No.”
Jonathan looked at him.
“I didn't.”
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
“You opened the door.”
Jonathan went silent.
Claire felt a chill.
“What door?”
Daniel looked at Richard.
“The door to the basement.”
Richard turned toward Jonathan.
“You let them take me.”
Jonathan's eyes filled with tears.
“I was trying to save you.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You were afraid.”
“Yes.”
“And because you were afraid…”
Daniel's voice broke.
“…you handed them my son.”
Jonathan lowered his head.
“I was twenty-three.”
“You knew better.”
“I was threatened.”
“You still chose.”
Silence.
Richard stepped toward Jonathan.
“You gave me to them?”
Jonathan nodded.
“I thought they would only change your identity.”
“And when you realized they wanted me dead?”
Jonathan's eyes filled with tears.
“I came back.”
“Fifteen years later.”
“I was being hunted.”
Richard stared at him.
“You left me.”
“Yes.”
“And Claire saved me.”
“Yes.”
Richard looked toward Claire.
Then back at Jonathan.
“Why should I trust you?”
Jonathan had no answer.
That night, Claire stood beside Daniel's bed.
He was asleep.
Richard sat in a chair nearby.
Neither spoke.
Then Daniel opened his eyes.
“Claire.”
“Yes?”
“There is one thing you don't know.”
“What?”
He reached beneath his pillow.
He pulled out a small photograph.
Claire took it.
Her heart stopped.
It showed Evelyn.
Margaret.
Jonathan.
And a fourth person.
A man standing behind them.
The face was blurred.
But Claire recognized the suit.
The ring.
The posture.
The scar across the hand.
She had seen that man before.
At the funeral.
At the hospital.
At the Blackwood estate.
She whispered:
“Adrian.”
Daniel nodded.
“He never disappeared.”
Claire stared at the photograph.
“Then where is he?”
Daniel looked toward the window.
“Closer than you think.”
A shadow moved outside.
Claire turned.
Nothing.
She looked back.
Daniel was staring at Richard.
“Your father is alive.”
Richard swallowed.
“Daniel is my father.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
Richard froze.
Daniel whispered:
“I am not your biological father.”
The room went silent.
Claire felt the floor disappear beneath her.
Daniel continued:
“I raised you.”
“I protected you.”
“But I am not the man who gave you your blood.”
Richard could barely speak.
“Then who is?”
Daniel looked at Claire.
Claire knew the answer.
She had seen the photograph.
She had recognized the ring.
The man who had supposedly disappeared.
The man everyone believed dead.
The man who had been hiding behind the Blackwood family's secrets.
Adrian.
Daniel's father.
Richard's biological grandfather.
But that wasn't the worst part.
Claire looked at Daniel.
“Adrian isn't your father.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“No.”
“Then who is he?”
Daniel whispered:
“The man behind all of this.”
The hallway light flickered.
And from somewhere upstairs came the sound of a woman's laughter.
Evelyn.
Claire looked toward the stairs.
The woman behind the smile had finally stopped pretending.
And somewhere in the darkness, the real Blackwood heir was waiting.
May you like
Not to claim the family.
But to destroy it.
