CHAPTER 4 — THE LOCKED BASEMENT

CHAPTER 4 — THE LOCKED BASEMENT

The first thing Claire noticed was the silence.

Not the ordinary silence of an empty house.

This was different.

It was the kind of silence that came after a secret had been spoken aloud.

Richard stood in the center of Margaret Vale's kitchen, staring at the doorway through which Jonathan had disappeared.

“Daniel is alive,” he whispered.

Claire said nothing.

The words were too impossible to touch.

For fifteen years, she had carried Daniel's death like a stone beneath her ribs.

She had watched the funeral.

She had seen the coffin.

She had heard the priest say his name.

She had stood beside Evelyn while the Blackwood family mourned.

She had watched Richard cry until he couldn't make a sound.

She had believed every lie because there had been too much evidence.

But now Jonathan had said something that changed everything.

The body buried fifteen years ago might not have been Daniel.

Richard turned toward her.

“You knew something was wrong.”

“No.”

“You suspected.”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

Claire looked down.

“Enough to know the story never made sense.”

“Then why did you never investigate?”

“I did.”

Richard stared.

“What?”

“I spent years searching.”

“Where?”

“Everywhere.”

“Then why didn't you find him?”

Claire swallowed.

“Because someone was always one step ahead of me.”

Richard's expression hardened.

“Who?”

Claire looked toward the broken window.

“I thought it was Evelyn.”

“And now?”

“I don't know.”

Margaret was still sitting beside the window.

She looked exhausted.

Richard turned toward her.

“You knew Daniel was alive?”

Margaret shook her head.

“I knew he might be.”

“That isn't good enough.”

“I saw him once.”

“When?”

“Three months after the fire.”

Claire stepped closer.

“Where?”

“Here.”

Margaret pointed toward the floor.

“Under this house.”

Richard frowned.

“There is a basement?”

Margaret nodded.

“A locked one.”

Claire felt a chill.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I was afraid.”

“Of Daniel?”

“No.”

Margaret looked at Richard.

“Of what he had become.”

Richard's face tightened.

“What does that mean?”

Margaret didn't answer.

Instead, she stood and walked toward a wooden cabinet.

She opened the bottom drawer.

Inside was an old ring of keys.

She selected one.

It was black with age.

“The basement door is beneath the kitchen.”

Richard stared.

“Then why have we never heard about it?”

“Because the entrance was sealed.”

Claire stepped closer.

“Who sealed it?”

Margaret's voice dropped.

“Your grandfather.”

Richard looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because he wanted something buried.”

Claire's eyes narrowed.

“What?”

Margaret looked at her.

“The truth.”

They moved the cabinet.

Beneath it was a square wooden panel.

Richard knelt and pulled it open.

A narrow staircase descended into darkness.

Cold air rose from below.

Claire shivered.

She remembered another staircase.

Another locked door.

Another night when Richard had been trapped underground.

She almost stepped back.

Richard noticed.

“You don't have to come.”

Claire looked at him.

“Yes, I do.”

They descended.

Each step creaked beneath their weight.

The deeper they went, the colder it became.

At the bottom was a steel door.

Margaret remained at the top.

“I won't go in.”

Richard looked back.

“Why?”

Margaret's eyes filled with fear.

“Because the last time I opened that door, someone died.”

Claire stopped.

“Who?”

Margaret whispered:

“Daniel.”

Richard stared at her.

“You just said he might be alive.”

“He might be.”

“That isn't an answer.”

Margaret looked away.

“Some questions have answers that destroy the person asking them.”

Richard opened the steel door.

The lock clicked.

The darkness beyond seemed endless.

The basement was enormous.

It wasn't a normal basement.

It looked like a laboratory.

Old equipment lined the walls.

Medical cabinets.

Metal tables.

Boxes of documents.

A rusted examination chair.

Richard stopped.

“What the hell is this?”

Claire walked slowly into the room.

Her skin prickled.

“I don't know.”

A large observation window covered one wall.

Behind it was another room.

A bed.

A sink.

Chains attached to the wall.

Richard stared.

“Someone was held here.”

Claire nodded.

“Not someone.”

She walked closer to the glass.

“A child.”

On the wall were faded drawings.

Crude pictures made with crayons.

A house.

A lake.

A man.

A woman.

And two children.

Richard touched the glass.

“Who were they?”

Claire looked at the drawing.

“Daniel.”

“And?”

She pointed.

“The second child.”

Richard stared.

“Me?”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

She pointed to the smaller figure.

“That was Daniel's son.”

Richard's breathing stopped.

“Then who am I?”

Claire looked at him.

“I don't know.”

The words terrified them both.

They searched the laboratory.

The first cabinet contained medical records.

The second contained photographs.

The third was empty.

Then Richard found a metal box hidden beneath the floor.

Inside were dozens of documents.

Birth certificates.

Hospital records.

Adoption papers.

DNA reports.

Claire picked up the first document.

Her hands began shaking.

“Richard.”

He looked at her.

“What?”

She handed it over.

It was his birth certificate.

Except the name of the father had been blacked out.

The mother's name was:

MARGARET VALE.

Richard stared.

“No.”

Claire took another document.

A hospital record.

Same mother.

Same date.

Same child.

Richard's face went pale.

“Margaret is my mother?”

Claire didn't answer.

Behind them, the basement door slammed shut.

They spun around.

Margaret was standing at the top of the stairs.

But she wasn't alone.

Evelyn stood beside her.

And in her hand was a gun.

Richard stepped backward.

“Mother?”

Evelyn stared at him.

“Don't call me that.”

He looked stunned.

“What?”

Evelyn descended one step.

“You have no idea what you've been told.”

Claire moved in front of Richard.

“Stay back.”

Evelyn laughed.

“Still protecting him?”

Claire glared.

“Always.”

Evelyn looked at the documents scattered across the table.

“You found them.”

“Yes.”

“You weren't supposed to.”

Richard stared at her.

“Who am I?”

Evelyn's expression hardened.

“Someone who was never supposed to survive.”

Richard froze.

Claire's stomach twisted.

“What did you do?”

Evelyn pointed the gun toward Claire.

“You should have left this family fifteen years ago.”

Claire didn't move.

“You tried to kill me then.”

“Yes.”

“You tried to kill Richard.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Evelyn's eyes moved toward Richard.

“Because Daniel was going to expose everything.”

Richard whispered:

“Everything?”

Evelyn nodded.

“The Blackwood fortune was built on fraud.”

Claire stared.

“That isn't the secret.”

“No.”

Evelyn smiled bitterly.

“The secret is that the rightful heir was never Daniel.”

Richard looked confused.

“Then who?”

Evelyn looked directly at him.

“You.”

Silence.

Richard shook his head.

“I don't understand.”

“You were born before Daniel's son.”

Claire's eyes widened.

“What?”

Evelyn continued.

“Your mother was Margaret.”

Richard looked toward the woman standing behind her.

Margaret was crying.

“I didn't want this,” she whispered.

Richard stared at her.

“You're my mother.”

Margaret nodded.

“I gave birth to you.”

“Then why did you give me away?”

“Because they told me you would die.”

“Who?”

Margaret looked at Evelyn.

“She did.”

Evelyn's expression didn't change.

“I gave them a choice.”

Margaret's voice broke.

“Keep silent or lose both children.”

Richard looked at Claire.

“Both?”

Claire felt her blood run cold.

Evelyn lowered the gun slightly.

“Daniel's son was born the same year.”

Richard's eyes widened.

“Where is he?”

Evelyn smiled.

“You're looking at him.”

Richard froze.

Claire's heart stopped.

“What?”

Evelyn laughed.

“You've spent fifteen years searching for Daniel's son.”

She pointed the gun at Richard.

“You never realized you were him.”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

Evelyn smiled.

“The DNA records were altered.”

Richard stared at the documents.

“My identity…”

“Was changed.”

“Why?”

“To protect the inheritance.”

Claire understood.

They hadn't stolen Richard's identity to hide him.

They had stolen it to control him.

Daniel had discovered the truth.

He had tried to protect his son.

And that was why he had disappeared.

Richard looked at Evelyn.

“Where is Daniel?”

Evelyn's smile vanished.

“You still don't understand.”

“Tell me.”

“Daniel isn't coming back.”

“But Jonathan said—”

“Jonathan lied.”

A voice came from the darkness.

“No.”

Everyone froze.

The lights flickered.

Then went out.

A man's voice echoed through the basement.

Jonathan.

“You're the one who has been lying.”

Evelyn spun around.

“Where are you?”

A gunshot cracked.

Evelyn dropped her weapon.

Richard pulled Claire behind the table.

The emergency lights came on.

Jonathan stood at the bottom of the stairs.

Blood covered his shoulder.

He looked at Evelyn.

“It's over.”

Evelyn stared at him.

“You should be dead.”

Jonathan smiled.

“I've been dead for fifteen years.”

He looked at Richard.

“But I came back for you.”

Richard stared.

“Why?”

Jonathan stepped forward.

“Because Daniel asked me to.”

Claire's heart pounded.

“Where is he?”

Jonathan looked at her.

“He's here.”

Claire froze.

“What?”

Jonathan pointed toward the observation room.

“There is a second door.”

Claire ran to it.

She searched the wall.

Then found a small metal handle.

She pulled.

The wall opened.

Beyond it was another room.

A hospital bed stood in the center.

Someone was lying on it.

Connected to machines.

Older.

Thin.

His face scarred.

But unmistakable.

Claire stopped breathing.

Richard stepped beside her.

The man slowly opened his eyes.

His lips moved.

One word.

“Claire.”

She covered her mouth.

Tears streamed down her face.

Daniel.

Alive.

After fifteen years.

Richard stared at the man.

“Dad?”

Daniel looked at him.

His eyes filled with tears.

Then he whispered:

“My son.”

Richard collapsed to his knees.

Claire couldn't move.

Everything she had believed had been destroyed in a single night.

Daniel was alive.

Richard was his son.

Margaret was Richard's biological mother.

Evelyn had spent fifteen years hiding the truth.

And the locked basement had been the place where Daniel had been kept alive all this time.

But then Daniel's eyes moved toward Evelyn.

His expression changed.

Fear.

Pure, unmistakable fear.

“Get her away from me.”

Claire turned.

Evelyn was smiling.

Not frightened.

Not defeated.

Smiling.

Because she knew something they didn't.

She looked at Claire.

“You think finding him ends this?”

She laughed softly.

“No.”

She looked at Richard.

“It only begins.”

Then the basement lights went out again.

And somewhere in the darkness—

a second gunshot echoed.

When the emergency lights returned, Evelyn was gone.

So was Margaret.

And on Daniel's hospital bed lay a single sheet of paper.

Claire picked it up.

Five words were written across it:

YOUR REAL FATHER IS ALIVE.
