CHAPTER 12 — THE RECORDING

CHAPTER 12 — THE RECORDING

For several seconds, Richard couldn't breathe.

Eleanor stood in the doorway holding the newborn as though she had every right to be there.

The baby's face was mostly hidden beneath a pale blanket.

Only one tiny hand was visible.

A silver bracelet circled its wrist.

Richard stared at it.

Then at Eleanor.

Then at Claire.

“Who is that?”

Eleanor smiled.

“You already know.”

“No.”

Richard's voice hardened.

“You don't get to walk into my house holding a child and expect me to believe anything you say.”

Eleanor tilted her head.

“Your house?”

She laughed softly.

“You still haven't learned.”

Claire stepped forward.

“Where did you get that baby?”

Eleanor looked at her.

“Ask yourself.”

Claire went completely still.

Richard turned toward his wife.

“What does she mean?”

Claire shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Eleanor smiled.

“She does.”

Then she placed the baby carefully into Richard's arms.

He instinctively caught the child.

The moment he did, the baby opened its eyes.

Richard froze.

The eyes were dark.

Unusually dark.

And around the left iris was a faint ring of gray.

He had seen those eyes before.

In old photographs.

In Elena's portrait.

In Thomas.

And in himself.

Claire whispered:

“Richard…”

He looked down.

The bracelet carried a tiny engraved symbol.

A crescent.

The same mark as his.

His hands began trembling.

“This is my child.”

Eleanor's smile disappeared.

“No.”

Richard looked at her.

“What?”

“This is your blood.”

She pointed toward Claire.

“But it isn't your child.”

Claire's face crumpled.

“Stop.”

Eleanor looked at her.

“Tell him.”

“I don't know what you're talking about.”

“Then listen.”

Eleanor reached into her coat.

She pulled out a small black device.

A recorder.

She placed it on the floor.

Pressed one button.

A woman's voice filled the room.

Richard stopped breathing.

His mother.

Elena.

“If you're hearing this, then Eleanor has found you.”

The recording crackled.

Richard's eyes filled instantly.

Claire covered her mouth.

Elena continued.

“Richard, my son, I don't know how old you will be when you hear this.”

A pause.

“I don't know whether I will still be alive.”

Richard closed his eyes.

For fifteen years, he had imagined hearing her voice.

He had imagined what she might say.

He had never imagined this.

“There are things I couldn't tell you.”

“Not because I didn't love you.”

“Because loving you was exactly what made you dangerous.”

Richard opened his eyes.

Eleanor watched him silently.

The recording continued.

“Your father believes he understands the Blackwood bloodline.”

“He doesn't.”

Thomas had always been wrong.

Richard felt his stomach tighten.

“Elias believes he controls the inheritance.”

“He doesn't.”

“Eleanor believes she controls the heirs.”

A pause.

“She doesn't.”

Eleanor's face remained expressionless.

Claire whispered:

“What does she mean?”

Richard shook his head.

“I don't know.”

Then Elena said something that changed everything.

“The person who controls the inheritance is not an heir.”

Richard stared at the recorder.

“It is the person who chooses the heir.”

Silence.

Then Elena whispered:

“And I was the one who chose you.”

Richard looked at Claire.

“What does that mean?”

Eleanor didn't answer.

The recording continued.

“There are five bloodlines connected to the original Blackwood trust.”

“Four were created through marriage.”

“One was created through blood.”

“That bloodline belongs to me.”

Richard's eyes widened.

Claire stared at the recorder.

Elena's voice became softer.

“I am not merely your mother.”

“I am the final keeper of the trust.”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

The recording continued.

“Before Elias married Eleanor…”

“Before Thomas was born…”

“Before the Blackwood family became what it is today…”

“There was another family.”

“The Vale family.”

Thomas had told them the Blackwoods had inherited the fortune.

That had been another lie.

Elena continued:

“The Vales created the original trust.”

“The Blackwoods stole it.”

Richard looked at Eleanor.

She didn't move.

“My father was the last legitimate Vale heir.”

“When he died, the Blackwoods took everything.”

“But they couldn't take the blood.”

Richard slowly looked at his wrist.

The crescent mark.

“So I was born with the right to reclaim it.”

The recording paused.

Then Elena said:

“But I wasn't the only one.”

Claire's eyes widened.

Richard looked at her.

The recording continued.

“Your father had another child.”

Richard's heart stopped.

“A child born before you.”

“A child the family believed had died.”

Richard whispered:

“Sophia.”

Elena said the name.

“Sophia.”

The room fell silent.

Richard looked toward Eleanor.

“Then Sophia is the rightful heir.”

“No.”

Eleanor's answer was immediate.

“She isn't.”

Richard turned.

“Then why did Elena call her an heir?”

“Because Elena was wrong.”

“You knew her.”

“Yes.”

“You knew everything.”

Eleanor nodded.

“I did.”

Richard stepped closer.

“Then tell me the truth.”

Eleanor looked at the baby.

“The truth is that Sophia was never meant to inherit.”

“Why?”

“Because she was born without the mark.”

Richard froze.

“What?”

Eleanor pointed toward the child.

“Look.”

Richard pulled back the blanket.

The baby's wrist was visible.

No mark.

He looked at his own wrist.

Then at Claire's.

Claire slowly rolled up her sleeve.

A faint crescent appeared.

Richard's blood ran cold.

Claire stared at her wrist.

“I never noticed that before.”

Eleanor smiled.

“Because Elena hid it.”

Claire's voice shook.

“Why?”

“Because you were the one she was protecting.”

Richard stared at Claire.

“Your mark…”

Claire shook her head.

“I didn't know.”

Eleanor laughed softly.

“Of course you didn't.”

Richard's mind raced.

“You're saying Claire is the heir.”

“Not exactly.”

“Then what?”

Eleanor pointed toward the baby.

“She is the keeper.”

Richard's face tightened.

“What does that mean?”

“The child is the key.”

Claire stepped backward.

“No.”

“The blood of the Vale family is carried by Claire.”

Richard looked at her.

“And the Blackwood blood is carried by me.”

Eleanor nodded.

“Together, you created something the original trust never anticipated.”

The baby began crying.

Claire instinctively reached for it.

Richard handed the child to her.

Eleanor continued:

“An heir with both bloodlines.”

Claire held the baby tightly.

“So that's why you wanted the child.”

“Yes.”

“To control the inheritance.”

“No.”

Eleanor's eyes became cold.

“To destroy it.”

Richard stared.

“Why?”

Eleanor looked toward the recorder.

“Because Elena planned to use the trust against us.”

“Us?”

“The Blackwoods.”

“You're not a Blackwood.”

“I became one.”

“That doesn't answer me.”

Eleanor stepped closer.

“Your mother intended to dismantle everything.”

Richard's expression hardened.

“She wanted justice.”

“She wanted revenge.”

“She wanted both.”

Eleanor's voice sharpened.

“And she was willing to sacrifice you to achieve it.”

Claire shook her head.

“That's a lie.”

Eleanor smiled.

“Then listen to the rest.”

She pressed the recorder.

A different recording began.

Elena's voice.

But this time, she sounded frightened.

“Daniel, you have to take Claire.”

Richard froze.

Claire's face went white.

“If Eleanor discovers she's alive, she'll use her against Richard.”

Daniel's voice answered.

“What about the baby?”

Elena went silent.

Then:

“The baby cannot stay with me.”

Claire covered her mouth.

Richard stared.

“What baby?”

The recording continued.

“Elias already knows about Richard.”

“If he learns about the second child, he'll kill her.”

Richard looked at Claire.

“The second child…”

Claire whispered:

“Me.”

The recording continued.

“Daniel, listen to me.”

“Take my daughter.”

“Change her name.”

“Give her a normal life.”

“Never tell her who she is.”

“And whatever happens…”

Elena's voice broke.

“Never let Richard find her.”

The recording stopped.

Claire was crying.

Richard couldn't speak.

He looked at Daniel.

Daniel was standing in the doorway.

He had heard everything.

Richard's voice was barely audible.

“You knew.”

Daniel nodded.

“I knew.”

“You raised her.”

“Yes.”

“You knew she was my sister.”

“Yes.”

“And you let me marry her?”

Daniel's face collapsed.

“No.”

Richard stepped closer.

“Then what?”

Daniel shook his head.

“You were never supposed to meet.”

Claire stared at him.

“What are you saying?”

Daniel looked at her.

“You weren't supposed to be Claire.”

She froze.

“Your name was changed.”

“Why?”

“Because Eleanor was searching for Elena's daughter.”

Richard stared.

“Then how did we meet?”

Daniel looked at him.

“That wasn't an accident.”

Richard's blood ran cold.

“Who arranged it?”

Daniel hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Eleanor.”

The room went silent.

Claire stared at Eleanor.

“You brought us together?”

Eleanor nodded.

“Why?”

“To produce the child.”

Richard's face hardened.

“You manipulated our entire marriage.”

“Yes.”

“You knew we were related.”

“Yes.”

“And you still let us marry?”

Eleanor smiled.

“Bloodlines are useful.”

Richard lunged.

Claire grabbed his arm.

“Richard, no.”

Eleanor didn't move.

She simply watched him.

“You think I wanted you to love her?”

Richard's voice shook with rage.

“I don't care what you wanted.”

“You should.”

“Why?”

“Because your marriage created the only person capable of ending this.”

Richard looked at the baby.

Eleanor whispered:

“Your child.”

Suddenly the recording changed.

Static filled the room.

Then another voice.

A man's voice.

Richard recognized it immediately.

Elias.

“Eleanor, you should have killed the child when you had the chance.”

Eleanor's face changed.

The recording continued.

“You failed.”

“Again.”

A pause.

“Richard was never the target.”

“Claire was.”

Claire froze.

Richard looked at Eleanor.

“You tried to kill her.”

“No.”

The recording continued.

“If Claire survives, she will eventually remember.”

“She will remember what Elena made her do.”

Richard turned toward Claire.

“What did you do?”

Claire shook her head.

“I don't know.”

The recording crackled.

Then Elena spoke.

“Claire, if you ever remember…”

“Don't trust Richard.”

Claire's face went white.

Richard stared at her.

“Why would she say that?”

Claire backed away.

“I don't know.”

Eleanor smiled.

“Now you're beginning to understand.”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

Eleanor pointed toward Claire.

“Ask her what happened at Blackwood Lake.”

Claire's breathing stopped.

Richard turned.

“Claire?”

She said nothing.

“Tell me.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I don't remember.”

Eleanor laughed.

“You do.”

Claire suddenly grabbed her head.

A memory flashed.

Water.

Rain.

A woman screaming.

Elena.

A child crying.

A car sinking into Blackwood Lake.

Claire stood frozen.

Then whispered:

“I was there.”

Richard's heart stopped.

“When?”

“The night your mother disappeared.”

“What did you see?”

Claire began shaking.

“I saw Elena.”

“And?”

“She was holding a baby.”

Richard stared.

“Who?”

Claire closed her eyes.

“The baby…”

She looked down at the child in her arms.

“…wasn't you.”

Richard's face went pale.

“Then who?”

Claire whispered:

“It was me.”

Eleanor smiled.

“Exactly.”

Richard stared.

Claire continued crying.

“Elena gave me to Daniel.”

“Why?”

“Because someone was coming.”

“Who?”

Claire looked toward Eleanor.

“Her.”

Eleanor's expression finally changed.

“You remember.”

Claire nodded slowly.

“I remember.”

“What?”

Claire looked at Richard.

“Elena told me to hide.”

“Where?”

“Inside the car.”

Richard felt cold.

“What happened?”

“Elias arrived.”

“Then?”

“He tried to take the baby.”

Richard's voice cracked.

“Me?”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

“The other baby.”

Richard looked toward the infant.

Claire whispered:

“Your mother had twins.”

Silence.

Richard stared.

“Twins?”

Claire nodded.

“One was you.”

She looked at the baby.

“And the other…”

Her voice broke.

“…was taken.”

Eleanor stepped forward.

“And now you understand why the child matters.”

Richard looked at the baby.

“Who is she?”

Eleanor smiled.

“Your twin.”

Richard stopped breathing.

Claire stared at Eleanor.

“You're lying.”

“No.”

Eleanor looked at Richard.

“Elena gave birth to two children.”

“Why was I told there was only one?”

“Because one child was worth more alive.”

Richard's eyes filled with tears.

“My sister.”

Eleanor nodded.

“She was raised under another name.”

“Which name?”

Eleanor smiled.

“Isabelle.”

Richard turned toward the doorway.

Isabelle was standing there.

She had heard everything.

Her face was pale.

“No.”

Richard stared.

Eleanor whispered:

“You have spent your entire life searching for your sister.”

Richard looked at Isabelle.

Isabelle began crying.

“I didn't know.”

Richard took one step toward her.

“Isabelle…”

She shook her head.

“Don't.”

“You're my sister.”

“I don't know who I am anymore.”

“You're my sister.”

She looked at him.

Then at Claire.

Then at the baby.

“I thought I was the other heir.”

Eleanor smiled.

“You were.”

Isabelle stared.

“Then what am I now?”

Eleanor answered:

“The first child.”

Richard's face changed.

“What?”

Eleanor looked toward the baby.

“And she is the second.”

Richard stared.

The truth seemed to split his entire life open.

There had never been one heir.

There had never been two.

There had never even been three.

The family had spent generations lying about the children because the real inheritance had been divided from the beginning.

Then Eleanor said the one thing no one expected.

“Richard was never the heir.”

Everyone froze.

“He was the decoy.”

Richard's blood ran cold.

“The real heir…”

Eleanor looked at Claire.

“…was always you.”

Claire stared at her.

“No.”

Eleanor smiled.

“Yes.”

Then the recorder clicked one final time.

Elena's voice whispered:

“Claire, when the truth finally comes out, remember one thing.”

A pause.

“You were never abandoned.”

Another pause.

“You were the one I chose to survive.”

The recording ended.

Claire looked at Richard.

Tears streamed down her face.

“I never wanted any of this.”

Richard took her hand.

“I know.”

Eleanor watched them.

Then she smiled.

“Good.”

Richard looked at her.

“Good?”

“Yes.”

She stepped backward toward the darkness.

“Because now that you know the truth…”

She looked at the baby.

“…someone else will come for her.”

The lights went out.

A gunshot echoed.

When the emergency lights returned, Eleanor was gone.

So was the baby.

Claire screamed.

“MY CHILD!”

Richard ran toward the open window.

Outside, headlights disappeared into the darkness.

A black car was speeding away.

On the ground beneath the window was the silver bracelet.

Richard picked it up.

There was something engraved on the inside.

Four words.

NOT YOUR CHILD. YET.

Richard stared at them.

Then his phone vibrated.

One new message.

COME TO BLACKWOOD LAKE.

A second message appeared.

COME ALONE.

And beneath it:

BRING THE RECORDING.

Richard looked at Claire.

She was already crying.

But this time, there was something else in her eyes.

Recognition.

Fear.

And a memory she had spent her entire life trying to bury.

She whispered:

“Richard…”

He turned.

“I remember who took the baby.”

“Who?”

Claire stared toward the darkness.

Her voice became almost inaudible.

“It wasn't Eleanor.”

“Then who?”

Claire swallowed.

“It was your father.”

Richard froze.

Behind them, the recorder suddenly turned on by itself.

Elena's voice filled the room one final time.

“If Thomas tells you he never took the child, don't believe him.”

The recording stopped.

Richard stared into the darkness.

May you like

For the first time, he wondered whether the man he had spent his entire life trying to find…

was the person he should have feared all along.
