CHAPTER 11 — THE TRUTH ON LIVE TELEVISION

CHAPTER 11 — THE TRUTH ON LIVE TELEVISION

The television cameras were already waiting when we arrived.

I knew that before I even stepped into the studio.

There were too many security guards.

Too many reporters.

Too many microphones bearing the logos of major networks.

And, most unsettling of all, my face was already appearing on enormous screens throughout the building.

EMILY BENNETT — THE WOMAN AT THE CENTER OF PROJECT ECHO.

I stopped walking.

“This wasn't supposed to happen.”

My grandmother looked at me.

“It was always going to happen.”

Vanessa stood behind us.

She looked exhausted.

“You said we were going to the vault.”

“We were.”

“Then why are we here?”

My grandmother's expression hardened.

“Because the people hunting Emily have one advantage.”

“What?”

“They control the story.”

She pointed toward the screens.

“Tonight, we take it away from them.”

I stared at the cameras.

“You want me to go on television?”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I want the truth to go on television.”

Twenty minutes earlier, I had still believed the biggest secret of my life was hidden beneath the mansion.

Now I stood inside a private television studio while producers rushed around me.

A makeup artist approached.

I stepped away.

“No.”

She stopped.

“I don't need makeup.”

The woman looked confused.

My grandmother smiled.

“Good.”

She turned toward the producer.

“Put her on exactly as she is.”

The producer hesitated.

“Mrs. Marlowe, this is live television.”

“I know.”

“There could be legal consequences.”

“There will be.”

“For everyone.”

My grandmother looked at me.

“That is the point.”

A producer handed me a tablet.

The headline was already prepared.

MYSTERIOUS HEIRESS EXPOSES BILLION-DOLLAR FAMILY CONSPIRACY.

I stared at it.

“That isn't what happened.”

“No,” my grandmother said.

“It isn't.”

She took the tablet from my hand.

“Then tell them what did.”

The studio lights came on.

A countdown appeared.

10.

My hands were cold.

9.

Vanessa stood behind the camera.

Michael stood beside the security team.

Daniel was speaking quietly into an earpiece.

My grandmother sat in the control room.

5.

I looked at the camera.

For twenty-seven years, other people had spoken for me.

My father had been declared dead.

My mother had been declared dead.

My family history had been rewritten.

My identity had been altered.

My blood had been classified.

My inheritance had been stolen.

And every time someone asked what happened—

someone else answered.

3.

I took a breath.

2.

The red light turned on.

1.

The host smiled.

“Good evening.”

Millions of people were watching.

She turned toward me.

“Tonight, we are joined by Emily Bennett, the woman at the center of an extraordinary family scandal involving hidden fortunes, falsified records, and a secret genetic project that may have operated for decades.”

She looked directly at me.

“Emily, are you safe?”

I answered honestly.

“No.”

The host blinked.

I continued.

“But I'm finally being heard.”

The interview began calmly.

Too calmly.

The host asked about the necklace.

The cameras.

The mansion.

The hidden vault.

I explained everything.

Then she asked:

“Do you have evidence?”

My grandmother pressed a button in the control room.

The screen behind me changed.

Security footage appeared.

Vanessa planting the necklace inside my bag.

The room went silent.

The host watched.

“You're saying this woman framed you?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

I looked toward Vanessa.

She stepped into the light.

The host stared.

“Is that her?”

“Yes.”

Vanessa walked to the second chair.

She sat down.

The audience couldn't see how badly her hands were shaking.

The host turned toward her.

“Vanessa, did you plant the necklace?”

Vanessa looked at the camera.

“Yes.”

The audience gasped.

“Why?”

“Because I was told to.”

“By whom?”

Vanessa hesitated.

Then said:

“Edward Hale.”

A photograph appeared behind her.

Edward.

Then another.

Bank records.

Trust documents.

Security footage.

Hospital records.

One after another.

The story that had once seemed impossible was suddenly being displayed as evidence.

Then the host asked the question I had been dreading.

“Who is your father?”

I looked toward the control room.

My grandmother nodded.

I turned back.

“My biological father is Adrian Marlowe.”

The studio erupted.

The host stared at me.

“Adrian Marlowe?”

“Yes.”

“The founder of the Marlowe Biological Research Foundation?”

“Yes.”

“But you've also said Elias Marlowe is your father.”

“He is my father.”

The host looked confused.

“Those are two different men.”

“Yes.”

“Explain.”

I took a breath.

“Elias is the man who raised me in secret.”

I paused.

“He is the man who believed he was my biological father.”

“And Adrian?”

“Adrian provided the genetic material used in Project Echo.”

The host leaned forward.

“So you're saying you were genetically engineered?”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“I was conceived naturally.”

“The genetic sequence was introduced before I was born.”

The host looked at the camera.

“This is extraordinary.”

“No.”

I looked directly into the lens.

“What's extraordinary is that people were killed to keep this secret.”

The screen behind me changed.

A list appeared.

Names.

Dates.

Cause of death.

One after another.

Doctors.

Lawyers.

Researchers.

Accountants.

Witnesses.

People who had tried to expose Project Echo.

The host went silent.

“These people…”

“Died.”

“Were they murdered?”

“Some.”

I swallowed.

“Others were forced into hiding.”

The host looked at the list.

“Who ordered it?”

I looked toward the camera.

“Edward Hale.”

Then I paused.

“But he wasn't alone.”

The room became completely silent.

“Who else?”

I looked at Vanessa.

She nodded.

I said:

“Victor Hale.”

A photograph appeared.

The audience reacted immediately.

The host turned.

“Victor Hale is believed to have disappeared decades ago.”

“He didn't.”

“Where is he?”

“I don't know.”

My answer was honest.

“But he has been controlling people from the shadows.”

Then the studio doors opened.

Everyone turned.

Edward Hale walked inside.

Security guards surrounded him.

The audience erupted.

He looked directly at me.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he smiled.

“You really believe this will save you?”

I looked at him.

“No.”

“Then why are you doing it?”

“Because you don't control the story anymore.”

He laughed.

“You think television changes anything?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

I pointed toward the cameras.

“The evidence does.”

His smile disappeared.

The host asked:

“Mr. Hale, do you deny these accusations?”

Edward stepped toward the desk.

“I deny everything.”

“Do you deny the existence of the trust?”

“Yes.”

“Do you deny the hidden vault?”

“Yes.”

“Do you deny Project Echo?”

“Yes.”

The host turned toward me.

Emily, what do you say to that?”

I looked at Edward.

“Play the recording.”

The screen changed.

The first recording showed Edward in the mansion.

His voice was clear.

“The trust belongs to me.”

Another recording.

“She cannot inherit if she doesn't exist.”

Another.

“Change the birth record.”

Another.

“Claire must disappear.”

The studio went silent.

Edward's face drained of color.

The audience watched him.

He whispered:

“Those recordings are fabricated.”

My grandmother's voice came through the studio speakers.

“No.”

The camera cut to her.

She was sitting in the control room.

She looked directly at Edward.

“I recorded them.”

Edward stared.

“You.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

She smiled.

“You taught me everything about surveillance.”

Then the final recording played.

It was audio from beneath the mansion.

My mother's voice.

“Emily was never the weapon.”

Edward's voice followed.

“She is the key.”

My mother:

“No.”

Edward:

“If she inherits, the entire structure collapses.”

Then a third voice.

Adrian.

“She has no idea what she carries.”

Edward:

“She doesn't need to.”

The recording ended.

The host looked at Edward.

“Did you know Emily was being genetically modified?”

Edward said nothing.

“Mr. Hale?”

Nothing.

“Did you know?”

He finally answered.

“Yes.”

The audience gasped.

The host continued.

“Did you order the modification?”

“No.”

“Who did?”

Edward looked at me.

“Your mother.”

I felt my heart stop.

“My mother?”

“Yes.”

He pointed toward the screen.

“She turned you into a biological asset.”

My mother's voice suddenly came through the speakers.

“No.”

Everyone turned.

She walked into the studio.

Alive.

The audience erupted.

I stood.

“Mom?”

She walked toward me.

Tears filled her eyes.

“I should have told you sooner.”

I couldn't speak.

She turned toward Edward.

“You are lying again.”

Edward smiled.

“Then tell them.”

My mother looked at the camera.

“I never modified my daughter.”

The room went silent.

“Adrian created the sequence.”

She took my hand.

“But I never put it into Emily.”

I stared at her.

“Then how do I have it?”

My mother looked at Adrian.

He was standing near the studio entrance.

His face was pale.

“Because,” she whispered, “the sequence was already in you.”

I froze.

“What?”

Adrian stepped forward.

“I made the mistake of believing I had created it.”

My mother shook her head.

“You discovered it.”

Adrian looked at me.

“You carried it naturally.”

The host stared.

“So the genetic sequence existed before Project Echo?”

“Yes.”

“Where did it come from?”

Adrian looked at me.

“Your bloodline.”

I frowned.

“What bloodline?”

My grandmother answered.

“The Marlowe bloodline.”

The host looked confused.

“But Emily is a Bennett.”

My grandmother smiled.

“Not entirely.”

She turned toward the camera.

“Emily's mother was Claire Marlowe.”

I stopped breathing.

My mother nodded.

“I changed my name to Bennett to hide from Edward.”

The host whispered:

“So Emily is a Marlowe.”

“Yes.”

The studio erupted again.

Then my grandmother stood.

She walked toward the camera.

“The Marlowe family created the trust.”

“The Hale family was appointed to manage it.”

“Edward stole control.”

“He forged documents.”

“He manipulated medical records.”

“He buried evidence.”

“And he spent decades convincing the world that the Marlowe bloodline was extinct.”

Edward shouted:

“You have no proof!”

My grandmother looked at him.

“Actually…”

She smiled.

“We have everything.”

The screen behind her changed.

Bank transfers.

Property deeds.

Trust agreements.

Hospital records.

Original birth certificates.

Security footage.

Audio recordings.

And finally—

the original will.

My name appeared at the top.

PRIMARY BENEFICIARY: EMILY MARLOWE.

Edward stared at the screen.

“No.”

The host looked at him.

“Mr. Hale, what happens now?”

He said nothing.

My grandmother answered for him.

“He loses everything.”

But Edward wasn't finished.

He reached into his pocket.

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“Don't.”

Edward stopped.

Then he smiled.

“You think you've won.”

I looked at him.

“Have I not?”

“No.”

He held up his phone.

“I have one last secret.”

The host asked:

“What secret?”

Edward looked directly into the camera.

“Your father is not Adrian.”

I froze.

My mother closed her eyes.

Edward continued.

“And your mother knows who he really is.”

I looked at Claire.

“Mom?”

She didn't answer.

Edward smiled.

“Ask her about the night you were born.”

My heart pounded.

“Mom.”

She finally looked at me.

Her face was devastated.

“I didn't want you to know.”

“Know what?”

She whispered:

“Your birth certificate was changed.”

“I know.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“Not the one you found.”

“What?”

“The original.”

She looked at the camera.

“The original birth certificate names someone else.”

My blood ran cold.

“Who?”

Before she could answer, every television screen in the studio went black.

A message appeared.

THE LIVE FEED HAS BEEN HIJACKED.

Then another:

THE TRUTH HAS ONLY JUST BEGUN.

The audience screamed.

The lights went out.

And somewhere inside the building—

a gunshot echoed.

I felt someone grab my hand.

I turned.

It was my mother.

“Run.”

“Why?”

She looked terrified.

“Because the person who just interrupted the broadcast…”

She swallowed.

“…is the person who knows who your real father is.”

We ran through the backstage corridor.

Daniel shouted behind us.

Security guards rushed in every direction.

Then the television screens flickered back on.

One face appeared.

Victor Hale.

He looked directly into the camera.

And smiled.

“Good evening, Emily.”

I stopped.

His voice echoed through the building.

“You wanted the truth.”

He leaned closer to the camera.

“Now I'm going to give you all of it.”

A file appeared on the screen.

SUBJECT: EMILY MARLOWE

Then beneath it:

BIOLOGICAL FATHER: UNKNOWN

And a final line appeared.

MOTHER: CLAIRE MARLOWE

I stared.

Unknown.

My father was officially unknown.

Victor smiled.

“Tomorrow morning, I will reveal the name.”

The screen went black.

My mother pulled me closer.

I looked at her.

“Who is he?”

She didn't answer.

“Mom.”

She began to cry.

Then whispered:

“The man Victor is going to name…”

She looked toward the dark hallway.

“…is the reason I ran from everyone.”

I waited.

She finally said:

“And he is the only person Edward was ever truly afraid of.”

The studio fell silent.

Outside, sirens began to scream.

And for the first time, I understood that the live broadcast hadn't ended the mystery.

It had opened the door to something much worse.

Because tomorrow, the whole world would learn the identity of my father.

May you like

And whatever that name was—

it would destroy the last lie holding the Hale and Marlowe families together.
