CHAPTER 13 — THE WOMAN WHO STOOD UP

CHAPTER 13 — THE WOMAN WHO STOOD UP

The maternity ward had been abandoned for nineteen years.

Yet when we arrived at 2:13 in the morning, every light on the third floor was on.

I stared through the windshield.

“This is where I was born?”

My mother sat beside me.

“Yes.”

“You said the records were destroyed.”

“They were supposed to be.”

“Then why are the lights on?”

She didn't answer.

Elias opened the car door.

“Because someone knew we were coming.”

Daniel checked the corridor.

“No movement.”

My grandmother remained in the vehicle.

She was too weak to walk.

Before I stepped out, she grabbed my hand.

“Emily.”

I looked at her.

“If you find her…”

“Who?”

“The woman in the photograph.”

“What about her?”

My grandmother's eyes filled with fear.

“Don't call her Mother.”

I frowned.

“Why?”

“Because you don't know what she did.”

The hospital smelled exactly like the photograph.

Old antiseptic.

Dust.

Cold metal.

Memories I didn't actually remember seemed to cling to the walls.

We reached the maternity ward.

The doors opened automatically.

I stopped.

“How?”

Daniel looked at the control panel.

“The system has power.”

“After nineteen years?”

“Someone restored it.”

We entered.

The lights flickered.

Then came on.

At the end of the corridor stood a woman.

She was wearing a white coat.

Her hair was silver.

Her face was hidden in shadow.

She didn't run.

She didn't scream.

She simply waited.

My heart started pounding.

“Who are you?”

The woman stepped forward.

I recognized her immediately.

The woman from the photograph.

The woman who had been holding me as a newborn.

My biological mother.

She smiled.

“Emily.”

My mother grabbed my arm.

“Don't go near her.”

The woman looked at Claire.

“You still call yourself her mother?”

Claire's face collapsed.

“You abandoned her.”

“No.”

The woman's voice was calm.

“You stole her.”

I stared between them.

“What is happening?”

Neither woman answered.

I stepped forward.

“Who are you?”

The stranger looked at me.

“My name is Mara.”

“Mara what?”

She hesitated.

“Mara Marlowe.”

My grandmother had warned me not to call her Mother.

But I needed answers.

“Did you give me to Claire?”

Mara nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I was dying.”

I froze.

“What?”

“I had less than six months to live.”

She touched her chest.

“I had a genetic disorder.”

I remembered Project Echo.

“The disease.”

“Yes.”

“And you gave me away because you thought you'd die.”

“No.”

She looked at Claire.

“I gave you away because I knew someone would use you to cure me.”

I felt sick.

“Who?”

“Edward.”

My mother's voice shook.

“That's not true.”

Mara looked at her.

“You know it is.”

Claire stepped forward.

“You wanted to use Emily's blood.”

“No.”

“You signed the agreement.”

“I signed it because I had no choice.”

“You could have refused.”

“And watched my daughter die?”

Silence.

I stared at Mara.

“You're saying I was created to save you?”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You were created because I wanted a child.”

My breath caught.

“The genetic sequence was already in my blood.”

“Yes.”

“And Adrian?”

“He discovered it.”

“Elias?”

“He protected it.”

“Edward?”

“He wanted to own it.”

“And Claire?”

Mara looked at her.

“She saved you.”

I looked at my mother.

The woman I had spent my entire life believing was my biological mother.

“She saved me?”

Mara nodded.

“She became your mother when I couldn't.”

Claire began crying.

“I never meant to keep you from her.”

Mara's expression hardened.

“You kept her from me for twenty-seven years.”

Claire whispered:

“Because you were dead.”

Mara froze.

“What?”

“I was told you died.”

Mara stared at her.

“Who told you?”

Claire slowly turned.

“Jonathan.”

Mara's face changed.

“He lied.”

A sound came from behind us.

Footsteps.

Daniel raised his weapon.

A man stepped into the corridor.

Jonathan.

Alive.

Again.

Mara stared at him.

“You.”

Jonathan smiled.

“Hello, Mara.”

She stepped backward.

“You told them I was dead.”

“I protected you.”

“You imprisoned me.”

“I hid you.”

“You erased me from my daughter's life.”

“I saved your daughter.”

Mara's eyes filled with rage.

“You stole her.”

Jonathan's expression hardened.

“You would have given her to Edward.”

“No.”

“You signed the agreement.”

“I signed a medical consent form.”

“For your treatment.”

“For my survival.”

Jonathan shook his head.

“You don't know what Edward intended.”

Mara stared at him.

“I knew enough.”

Jonathan turned toward me.

“Your mother was dying.”

Mara whispered:

“Don't call me that.”

He ignored her.

“She asked Adrian to study Emily's blood.”

I looked at Mara.

“Did you?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To find a cure.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

Mara's voice broke.

“Instead, they found something else.”

“What?”

“You.”

Jonathan stepped toward me.

“Your blood didn't cure Mara.”

“It contained something much more valuable.”

“What?”

“The ability to regenerate damaged tissue.”

I stared.

“And you knew?”

“Yes.”

“That's why Edward wanted me.”

“Yes.”

“That's why people died.”

“Yes.”

I looked at Mara.

“Did you know?”

She shook her head.

“Not until it was too late.”

A loud bang came from downstairs.

Daniel looked toward the stairwell.

“We're not alone.”

Jonathan's expression changed.

“Victor.”

Mara shook her head.

“No.”

“Then who?”

She looked at me.

“The people who want Emily alive.”

“Why alive?”

“Because dead, she is useless.”

I didn't like the way she said it.

“Useful for what?”

Mara hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Replication.”

The word echoed through the corridor.

“Replication of what?”

“Children.”

I froze.

“What?”

Mara looked at me.

“Your DNA can be used to create embryos.”

My stomach turned.

“That's why Project Echo existed.”

“Yes.”

“They wanted more people like me.”

“Yes.”

“How many?”

Mara's eyes filled with tears.

“Thirty-two.”

I couldn't breathe.

“Thirty-two?”

“Thirty-two embryos were created.”

“What happened to them?”

“Most failed.”

“And the others?”

Mara looked away.

“I don't know.”

Jonathan answered:

“Five survived.”

My blood went cold.

“Where are they?”

Jonathan didn't answer.

I stepped toward him.

“Where?”

He looked at me.

“Three are dead.”

“And the other two?”

He hesitated.

“Alive.”

“Where?”

“Hidden.”

“Why?”

“Because they are being hunted.”

“By whom?”

Jonathan's answer was quiet.

“By the same people hunting you.”

The corridor suddenly went dark.

Gunfire erupted downstairs.

Daniel shouted:

“Everyone down!”

We dropped behind the nurses' station.

Glass shattered.

Mara crawled toward me.

“Emily.”

“What?”

“Listen to me.”

She reached inside her coat.

Pulled out a small silver bracelet.

I recognized it.

I had seen it in my childhood photographs.

“What is that?”

“Yours.”

She placed it in my hand.

“You wore it the night I gave you away.”

I stared.

There was a tiny inscription inside.

M.E.M.

“Mara Emily Marlowe.”

She smiled sadly.

“I named you.”

I looked at her.

“You really are my mother.”

“Yes.”

The words hurt more than I expected.

Not because I didn't believe her.

Because some part of me had always wanted to hear them.

I reached toward her.

She took my hand.

Then someone shouted from the corridor.

“Emily!”

Victor.

He stepped into the light.

No weapon.

No guards.

Just him.

“Come with me.”

“No.”

“You want the truth.”

“I do.”

“Then come.”

Mara stood.

“She isn't going anywhere.”

Victor smiled.

“I wasn't speaking to you.”

He looked at me.

“I know who your father is.”

I froze.

Mara's grip tightened around my hand.

“Don't listen.”

Victor continued.

“Jonathan lied.”

Jonathan looked furious.

“Victor.”

“You were told Elias wasn't your father.”

I nodded.

“You were told Adrian wasn't your father.”

“Yes.”

“You were told Jonathan wasn't your father.”

“Yes.”

Victor smiled.

“Because none of them are.”

I stepped forward.

“Then who is?”

Victor looked at Mara.

She closed her eyes.

Victor said:

“The man you have been calling Edward Hale.”

My heart stopped.

“No.”

Mara whispered:

“Emily, don't.”

Victor continued.

“Edward Hale is your biological father.”

The hallway went silent.

I stared at my mother.

“Is that true?”

She didn't answer.

“Mom.”

Mara began crying.

“Yes.”

The word destroyed me.

Edward.

The man who had spent years trying to control me.

The man who had tried to destroy my family.

The man who had ordered people to hunt me.

My father.

I felt sick.

“How?”

Mara whispered:

“He wasn't always Edward Hale.”

“Then who was he?”

“Evan Marlowe.”

I couldn't breathe.

“Your father.”

Jonathan stepped forward.

“He changed his name.”

“Why?”

“To escape the Marlowe family.”

“Why?”

“Because he betrayed them.”

Mara continued.

“He believed your blood belonged to him.”

I looked at Victor.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“Why tell me now?”

“Because Edward is going to kill you.”

I froze.

“What?”

Victor looked toward the staircase.

“He already knows you're here.”

Mara pulled me backward.

“We have to leave.”

But it was too late.

Footsteps echoed above us.

Slow.

Measured.

Familiar.

Edward appeared at the top of the stairs.

He looked at me.

Then at Mara.

For the first time, I saw something in his expression I had never seen before.

Not hatred.

Not anger.

Recognition.

“Emily.”

I couldn't move.

He descended one step.

Then another.

Mara stepped in front of me.

“Don't come closer.”

Edward stopped.

“Claire.”

Mara's eyes hardened.

“Don't call her that.”

Edward smiled.

“I haven't seen you in twenty-seven years.”

“You were supposed to be dead.”

“So were you.”

He looked at me.

“I suppose we both disappointed everyone.”

I stared at him.

“Are you my father?”

Edward's expression changed.

He looked almost broken.

“Yes.”

The word echoed through the hospital.

I shook my head.

“No.”

He stepped forward.

“I didn't know you survived.”

“You knew my mother.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about me.”

“Yes.”

“You tried to destroy me.”

“No.”

“You sent people after me.”

“I sent people to protect you.”

“You lied.”

“I lied because if Victor found out you were alive, he would have killed you.”

I laughed bitterly.

“You expect me to believe that?”

Edward looked at Mara.

“She knows.”

Mara's eyes filled with tears.

“I know.”

Edward looked back at me.

“I was trying to keep you alive.”

I stared at the man who had been my enemy for years.

Then I asked the question that mattered.

“Why did you let me believe you hated me?”

He looked down.

“Because I knew you would hate me.”

“Why?”

“Because that was safer than loving me.”

A siren sounded outside.

Then another.

Daniel looked through the window.

“We're surrounded.”

Victor smiled.

“No.”

He looked at Edward.

“They're here for you.”

Edward's expression changed.

Victor stepped backward.

“I've given them everything.”

“What did you do?”

“I gave them Emily's location.”

Everyone froze.

Edward looked at Victor.

“You betrayed me.”

Victor smiled.

“You betrayed everyone first.”

The doors downstairs exploded open.

Armed men stormed into the hospital.

Mara grabbed me.

“Run!”

We raced down the corridor.

Elias followed.

Jonathan stayed behind.

Daniel fired.

The hallway became chaos.

Then I heard Edward shout:

“Emily!”

I turned.

He was standing alone.

“Your mother is lying to you.”

Mara screamed:

“Don't listen!”

Edward pointed toward her.

“She knows who created Project Echo.”

Mara shouted back:

“And you know who funded it!”

Edward froze.

I looked between them.

“Who?”

Neither answered.

Then Jonathan spoke.

“The truth is bigger than both of them.”

He pointed toward the maternity ward.

“Go.”

I ran.

Inside the old delivery room was a metal cabinet.

The same cabinet shown in my mother's old photograph.

I opened it.

Inside was one final file.

PROJECT ECHO — ORIGINAL PROTOCOL.

I opened it.

The first page contained a list of names.

Edward Hale.

Adrian Marlowe.

Elias Marlowe.

Jonathan Marlowe.

Claire Marlowe.

Mara Marlowe.

All of them.

But one name was different.

DIRECTOR: UNKNOWN

I turned the page.

A photograph fell out.

I picked it up.

The man in the photograph was standing beside all of them.

I knew his face.

I had seen him before.

On television.

In newspapers.

In the background of family photographs.

He was the man everyone trusted.

The man nobody had suspected.

I whispered his name.

“No…”

Mara entered behind me.

She saw the photograph.

Her face went white.

“Emily.”

“Who is he?”

She stared at the photograph.

Then whispered:

“The man who owns the entire foundation.”

“Who?”

She looked at me.

“The man who raised Edward.”

My heart stopped.

“Who?”

Mara answered:

“Your great-grandfather.”

I stared at the photograph.

The man was smiling.

And beneath his name was one title:

FOUNDER — PROJECT ECHO.

Then the hospital screens turned on.

His face appeared.

Alive.

Watching us.

And he spoke directly to me.

“My great-granddaughter.”

He smiled.

“You've finally come home.”

The screen went black.

And behind me, the maternity ward door slowly locked itself.

I turned the handle.

Nothing.

We were trapped.

Then a final message appeared on the wall.

SUBJECT EMILY: ACTIVATION BEGINS AT DAWN.

I looked at Mara.

“What does activation mean?”

She didn't answer.

She only whispered:

“It means they don't want your blood anymore.”

I swallowed.

“What do they want?”

Mara looked at my stomach.

Then at me.

“They want you to give birth.”

My blood ran cold.

I wasn't pregnant.

I knew that.

But Mara was crying.

May you like

Because she knew something I didn't.

And somewhere beneath the hospital, a machine began to turn on.
