CHAPTER 8 — THE MONEY UNDER THE MANSION

CHAPTER 8 — THE MONEY UNDER THE MANSION

The grave was empty.

That was the first thing Vanessa told us.

The second thing was worse.

“The money is still there.”

I stared at her.

“What money?”

Vanessa looked toward the dark road where Victor had disappeared.

“The money Edward hid beneath the mansion.”

Lucas frowned.

“What does that have to do with Emily's mother?”

“Everything.”

Michael stepped closer.

“You never told me about the money.”

Vanessa looked at him.

“Because I wasn't supposed to know.”

“But you do.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

She swallowed.

“Because Edward showed me.”

My stomach tightened.

“When?”

“After Claire disappeared.”

I stared at her.

“You were there?”

“No.”

“Then how did you see it?”

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“He took me underground.”

We returned to the mansion before dawn.

Nobody spoke during the drive.

The revelation about the grave had changed everything.

My mother's supposed grave wasn't hers.

The woman buried there was someone else.

And somewhere beneath the Hale estate was a hidden fortune that had apparently been connected to the disappearance of my mother, my father, Michael, and the original trust.

When we reached the mansion, Daniel was waiting.

He had spent the night reviewing the security footage.

The moment he saw Vanessa, he walked toward her.

“You disappeared.”

“I had to.”

“You put Emily in danger.”

Vanessa looked down.

“I know.”

Daniel looked at me.

“What happened?”

I handed him the photograph.

He studied it.

Then looked at Vanessa.

“What is this?”

“The Hale cemetery.”

“And?”

“The grave marked Claire Bennett isn't my mother's.”

Daniel's expression changed.

“What?”

“She was never buried there.”

He looked at me.

“Then whose grave is it?”

“We don't know.”

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

She answered quietly.

“A woman named Nora Voss.”

Michael's face went pale.

“My wife.”

I stared at him.

“Your wife?”

Michael nodded slowly.

“Dead?”

“Twenty-seven years ago.”

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“She was my mother.”

Silence.

I looked at her.

“The woman buried under my mother's name was your mother?”

Vanessa nodded.

“And Edward used her body to fake Claire's death.”

I couldn't speak.

Daniel looked horrified.

“Why?”

Vanessa whispered:

“Because Edward needed everyone to believe Claire was dead.”

“And why was he hiding Claire?”

Vanessa looked at me.

“Because Claire knew about the money.”

The mansion had always seemed enormous.

Now it felt like a prison built over something far darker.

Vanessa led us through the west wing.

Past the library.

Past an old study.

Then she stopped in front of a fireplace.

“This is where he took me.”

Daniel looked around.

“There's nothing here.”

“There is.”

She reached beneath the mantel.

Pressed a hidden mechanism.

A section of the floor moved.

A staircase appeared.

I stared into the darkness.

“How long has this been here?”

“Since before Edward was born.”

Michael looked stunned.

“The old family vault.”

Vanessa nodded.

“That's what Edward called it.”

Daniel took a flashlight.

“We're going down.”

I followed.

The staircase seemed endless.

The air became colder with every step.

Eventually we reached a steel door.

There was no handle.

Only a fingerprint scanner.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“It won't open for me.”

Daniel tried.

Nothing.

Lucas tried.

Nothing.

Michael tried.

Nothing.

Then the scanner turned toward me.

A small light appeared.

IDENTITY REQUIRED.

I stared.

“How does it know me?”

No one answered.

I placed my hand against the scanner.

The system beeped.

Then:

EMILY BENNETT — BENEFICIARY VERIFIED.

The door unlocked.

I stepped backward.

Daniel stared at me.

“This entire vault was waiting for you.”

The door opened.

And I saw the money.

Stacks of sealed currency filled the walls.

Gold bars sat inside reinforced cases.

Boxes of diamonds.

Rare documents.

Old bonds.

Foreign bank records.

Property deeds.

Everything was organized.

Everything was catalogued.

This wasn't a hidden fortune.

It was an underground financial empire.

Michael walked toward one wall.

“These records are worth more than the money.”

He picked up a ledger.

“This is every account Edward controlled.”

Daniel looked at another shelf.

“Offshore companies.”

Lucas opened a box.

“Land titles.”

I stared at the rows of documents.

“How much?”

Michael looked at me.

“Enough to destroy the Hale family.”

“Or control it.”

He nodded.

“Exactly.”

I picked up one folder.

It contained a list of properties.

Hotels.

Hospitals.

Factories.

Private residences.

Banks.

And beneath each name was the same ownership structure.

MARLOWE-Hale TRUST.

My name appeared at the bottom.

I stared.

“This is mine?”

“Legally,” Michael said, “it always was.”

I looked at Vanessa.

“Then why did Edward control it?”

“Because he forged the succession documents.”

Michael shook his head.

“No.”

He opened another folder.

“He didn't forge them.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“He manipulated the trust before you were born.”

“How?”

Michael pointed to a document.

“The original trust required three trustees.”

“Who?”

“Your grandmother.”

“Your mother.”

“And…”

He stopped.

“And who?”

Michael looked at me.

“Your father.”

I swallowed.

“Which father?”

“That is the problem.”

A noise came from above.

Everyone froze.

Footsteps.

Daniel immediately shut the vault door.

We listened.

Someone was walking across the floor above us.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Then the sound stopped.

Daniel whispered:

“We're not alone.”

Vanessa looked terrified.

“Edward.”

Michael shook his head.

“No.”

“Then who?”

He looked at the security monitor.

“There.”

A small screen showed the hallway.

A man stood beside the fireplace.

Gray suit.

Black gloves.

He was holding a folder.

Victor.

I stared.

“How did he get inside?”

Michael's expression hardened.

“He knows about the vault.”

Daniel looked at the door.

“Can he open it?”

Michael shook his head.

“Not without Emily.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

“The system recognizes only the beneficiary.”

I stared at the scanner.

“Then why isn't he trying to get me?”

Michael looked at the monitor.

“Maybe he is.”

The vault lights suddenly went out.

A red emergency light activated.

Then the steel door locked.

I heard a mechanical click.

Daniel tried the handle.

Nothing.

“We're trapped.”

Vanessa began breathing rapidly.

Michael looked at the ceiling.

“There's another exit.”

“Where?”

“Behind the currency shelves.”

We moved.

Michael pulled the shelves aside.

A narrow passage appeared.

Before we could enter, the vault speaker activated.

Victor's voice filled the room.

“Emily.”

I froze.

“You don't know what you're holding.”

I looked at the speaker.

“Come inside.”

“Why?”

“Because this money was never yours.”

Michael shouted:

“Don't listen!”

Victor laughed.

“Michael.”

He paused.

“You've been hiding for twenty-seven years.”

“You should have stayed dead.”

Michael's face tightened.

Victor continued.

“Emily deserves to know the truth.”

I stepped toward the speaker.

“Tell me.”

“Your father stole this money.”

I looked at Michael.

He shook his head.

“That's a lie.”

Victor continued.

“He created the trust.”

“He moved the money.”

“He used your mother.”

I felt sick.

“Who is my father?”

Silence.

Then Victor said:

“You're asking the wrong question.”

“What question should I ask?”

“Who owns the money?”

I frowned.

“You said it wasn't mine.”

“Correct.”

“Then whose is it?”

Victor laughed softly.

“Your mother's.”

Everything went silent.

My mother's money.

My mother's trust.

My mother's hidden empire.

But she had been hiding for twenty-seven years.

Why?

Victor continued.

“Your mother didn't disappear because she was afraid of Edward.”

“Then why?”

“Because she was afraid of what would happen if the world discovered she was the real owner.”

I stared.

“That doesn't make sense.”

“It will.”

“Where is she?”

“Below the hospital.”

My heart pounded.

“The old hospital?”

“Yes.”

“She is there?”

“Yes.”

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“Take me to her.”

Victor's voice became cold.

“I will.”

“Then open the door.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because you need to bring something first.”

“What?”

“The original trust.”

I looked at the documents.

“You already have it.”

“No.”

“You have copies.”

“I need the original.”

“Why?”

“Because your mother signed it.”

I stared.

“What does her signature prove?”

“That she chose you.”

I frowned.

“Why does that matter?”

Victor answered:

“Because if you sign the transfer, the entire empire becomes yours.”

My heart stopped.

“And what do you want?”

“Control.”

“Of the money?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

Victor's voice dropped.

“Control of you.”

The vault door suddenly opened.

Nobody had touched it.

I stepped backward.

Victor wasn't there.

The corridor was empty.

Daniel checked the security feed.

“He's gone.”

Michael looked worried.

“No.”

“What?”

“He didn't leave.”

He pointed toward the floor.

A red light blinked.

“Motion sensor.”

Something was moving beneath us.

Then the floor shook.

A deep mechanical rumble traveled through the vault.

Vanessa screamed.

“What's happening?”

Michael looked toward the hidden passage.

“Run.”

We moved.

The passage led deeper underground.

The air became colder.

Then we reached another room.

This one contained no money.

Only machines.

Old servers.

Hard drives.

Monitors.

And hundreds of surveillance tapes.

I picked one up.

The label read:

CLAIRE — YEAR 1.

Another:

CLAIRE — YEAR 2.

Another:

CLAIRE — YEAR 3.

My heart stopped.

“She was monitored.”

Michael nodded.

“For twenty-seven years.”

“By Edward?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Michael pointed toward the server.

“The person who owned this facility.”

I looked at the screen.

A name appeared.

MARLOWE PRIVATE HOLDINGS.

Underneath:

AUTHORIZED CONTROLLER: C. BENNETT.

I stared.

“My mother.”

“Yes.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Your mother built this.”

Michael nodded.

“This wasn't Edward's vault.”

I looked around.

“It was hers.”

The realization hit me.

Edward hadn't been hiding money here.

He had been hiding inside my mother's system.

He had stolen control of it.

And my mother had spent twenty-seven years trying to take it back.

Then one of the monitors activated.

A live feed appeared.

My mother.

Claire.

She was sitting in a room beneath the hospital.

Alive.

Her hair was gray now.

Her face was thin.

But she was smiling.

She looked directly into the camera.

“Emily.”

I moved closer.

“Mom.”

Her lips trembled.

“I knew you'd find the vault.”

I began crying.

“I've been looking for you.”

“I know.”

“Why didn't you come for me?”

“Because I couldn't.”

“Why?”

“Because every time I tried, someone died.”

I looked at Michael.

Then Vanessa.

My mother continued.

“Edward wasn't the person controlling everything.”

I froze.

“He was only a servant.”

The screen flickered.

Someone entered the room behind her.

I couldn't see his face.

My mother looked frightened.

“Emily, listen to me.”

She leaned closer to the camera.

“The money under the mansion is not the real fortune.”

I frowned.

“Then what is?”

“The bloodline.”

The screen went black.

I stared at it.

“What does that mean?”

Michael whispered:

“The trust isn't just financial.”

“What is it?”

He looked at me.

“It controls succession.”

“Succession to what?”

“The entire Marlowe-Hale structure.”

I swallowed.

“Meaning?”

“Whoever controls the trust controls every asset connected to it.”

I looked at the vault.

The money suddenly seemed insignificant.

The real treasure wasn't the gold.

It was ownership.

A final screen activated.

A document appeared.

The original trust agreement.

At the bottom was my mother's signature.

Then my grandmother's.

Then a third signature.

I stared at the name.

ALEXANDER HALE.

My heart stopped.

Lucas looked stunned.

Michael stepped backward.

“That's impossible.”

I pointed.

“My father.”

Lucas shook his head.

“Alexander wasn't your father.”

“Then why did he sign the trust?”

Michael stared at the document.

“Because he was the trustee.”

I looked at the date.

It was signed one month before I was born.

Then I noticed something.

A handwritten note beneath the signatures.

In the event of Alexander's death, control shall pass to his daughter.

My name appeared underneath.

Emily.

I couldn't breathe.

Daniel looked at me.

“Your mother planned everything.”

“Before I was born.”

“Yes.”

“She knew I would inherit.”

“Yes.”

“But if Alexander died…”

Michael interrupted.

“He didn't.”

Everyone turned.

Michael stared at the document.

“Look at the signature.”

I did.

“What about it?”

“The ink.”

He pointed.

“It's fresh.”

I frowned.

“That document is twenty-seven years old.”

“Exactly.”

He turned to me.

“Which means someone signed Alexander's name recently.”

My blood went cold.

“Who?”

Nobody answered.

Then the vault speaker crackled.

A man's voice filled the room.

Calm.

Familiar.

Alive.

“Me.”

I turned.

A figure stood at the end of the corridor.

He stepped into the light.

And I saw his face.

Alexander Hale.

My supposed father.

My mother's lost love.

The man everyone had believed dead.

He looked directly at me.

Then smiled.

“Hello, Emily.”

Lucas raised his weapon.

“Alexander.”

Alexander looked at him.

“Hello, little brother.”

Lucas's hand trembled.

“You're alive.”

“I've always been alive.”

I stared at him.

“Are you my father?”

Alexander's smile disappeared.

“No.”

My heart shattered.

“But I know who is.”

He looked toward Vanessa.

“Ask her.”

Vanessa began crying.

Alexander continued:

“She betrayed your mother once.”

He paused.

“Now she's about to betray you.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.”

Alexander looked at me.

“She knows where your real father is.”

I turned toward Vanessa.

“Tell me.”

She couldn't speak.

“Vanessa.”

Tears streamed down her face.

Then she whispered:

“He's under this mansion.”

My blood turned cold.

“What?”

She pointed beneath our feet.

“Your father has been here the entire time.”

The lights went out.

A door slammed somewhere in the darkness.

And beneath us—

something began knocking.

Three slow knocks.

Then three more.

As if someone buried alive was trying to get out.

And I suddenly realized the money under the mansion had never been the secret.

It had been the bait.

May you like

The real secret was buried much deeper.

And it had just woken up.
