CHAPTER 6 — THE BROTHER WHO CAME BACK

CHAPTER 6 — THE BROTHER WHO CAME BACK

The elevator began to descend.

Not because I had pressed a button.

Because someone else had.

The display above the doors changed from P to B1.

Then B2.

Then B3.

Vanessa stood beside me, trembling.

“What is this place?”

I looked at her.

“You tell me.”

“I've never been below the penthouse.”

“You said Edward kept people here.”

“I said he watched people here.”

The elevator continued downward.

The numbers kept changing.

B4.

B5.

There was no B5 on the building plans.

I had seen the plans.

Daniel had shown them to me.

The penthouse had three basement levels.

Not five.

I stared at the display.

“This isn't on the plans.”

Vanessa swallowed.

“Edward built it.”

“Why?”

She didn't answer.

The elevator stopped.

The doors opened.

A narrow corridor waited beyond them.

No lights.

No sound.

Then a single bulb flickered on.

At the end of the corridor stood a man.

Tall.

Gray coat.

Dark hair.

His face was partly hidden by shadow.

Vanessa grabbed my arm.

“Don't move.”

The man stepped forward.

And I saw his face.

My entire body went cold.

He looked at me.

Not with surprise.

Not with fear.

With recognition.

Then he whispered:

“Emily.”

I couldn't speak.

Vanessa's fingers tightened around my arm.

The man walked closer.

He looked older than the photograph.

His hair had streaks of gray.

There was a scar across his jaw.

But I knew those eyes.

I had seen them in the old photographs.

I had seen them in my mother's letters.

I had seen them in the hidden recordings.

Lucas Hale.

My father.

The man everyone had told me was dead.

He was alive.

And he was standing ten feet away from me.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

I stared at him.

He stared at me.

Then his eyes filled with tears.

“I thought I'd never see you.”

My voice finally returned.

“Who are you?”

He flinched.

“My name is Lucas.”

“I know your name.”

His expression changed.

“Then you know who I am.”

“You're my father.”

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

The word broke something inside me.

Twenty-seven years.

Twenty-seven years of believing I had no father.

Twenty-seven years of believing I had been abandoned.

And now the man responsible for half my bloodline stood in front of me.

I wanted to run toward him.

I wanted to slap him.

I wanted to ask a thousand questions.

Instead, I asked the simplest one.

“Why did you leave me?”

Lucas looked at me.

“I didn't.”

“Then why weren't you there?”

“I was taken.”

“By Edward?”

“Yes.”

I stepped closer.

“Why didn't you come back?”

“I tried.”

“Why didn't you find me?”

“I did.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

Lucas looked at Vanessa.

Then back at me.

“I found you.”

“When?”

“Many times.”

“Then why didn't you tell me who you were?”

His voice broke.

“Because every time I got close, someone disappeared.”

I stared at him.

“Who?”

“My friends.”

“My lawyers.”

“Your mother's friends.”

“Anyone who knew where you were.”

He paused.

“Your mother told me to stay away.”

“Why?”

“Because Edward was watching.”

I looked at Vanessa.

She nodded.

“It was true.”

I turned back to Lucas.

“You knew about me.”

“I knew everything.”

“Did you know about the trust?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know my mother was alive?”

Lucas's expression changed.

“Yes.”

My blood went cold.

“Where is she?”

He looked down.

“Close.”

“That isn't an answer.”

“No.”

“Then give me one.”

He took a breath.

“She is alive.”

I almost collapsed.

Lucas reached for me.

I stepped away.

“Don't.”

He stopped.

“You don't get to touch me.”

He nodded.

“I understand.”

“No, you don't.”

My voice shook.

“You knew I existed. You knew I was alive. You knew my mother was alive. And you let me grow up believing both of you were dead.”

Lucas looked devastated.

“I had no choice.”

“There is always a choice.”

“Not when the man controlling your entire life can make people disappear.”

I stared at him.

“Then tell me everything.”

He nodded.

“I will.”

Lucas led us into a hidden room.

It looked like an underground office.

Maps covered the walls.

Photographs.

Financial records.

Old newspapers.

My mother appeared in dozens of them.

So did Edward.

And Victor Hale.

And another man I didn't recognize.

I pointed to him.

“Who is that?”

Lucas looked at the photograph.

“My brother.”

I froze.

“You have another brother?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Lucas stared at the picture.

“Michael.”

Vanessa stepped backward.

“My brother?”

Lucas nodded.

Vanessa's face went white.

“No.”

“Michael Voss?”

“Yes.”

“But Michael disappeared twenty-seven years ago.”

Lucas looked at her.

“He didn't disappear.”

Vanessa's breathing became shallow.

“He was taken.”

“By Edward?”

Lucas shook his head.

“No.”

“Then who?”

Lucas looked at me.

“Your father.”

I stared.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

I felt confused.

“You just said Michael was your brother.”

“He was.”

“Then how could he be my father's—”

Lucas stopped.

“No.”

He shook his head.

“You misunderstood.”

He pointed to the photograph.

“Michael Voss wasn't my brother by blood.”

“He was my closest friend.”

Vanessa looked relieved for half a second.

Then Lucas continued.

“He was your mother's brother.”

I stared.

“What?”

“Michael was Claire's younger brother.”

Vanessa looked at me.

“Then he was my uncle.”

Lucas nodded.

“And he was the first person to discover Edward's secret.”

Everything suddenly connected.

My mother.

Michael.

The secret accounts.

The hospital.

The trust.

Edward.

But there was one question.

“What happened to Michael?”

Lucas looked away.

“He found the original ledger.”

“What ledger?”

“The ledger proving Edward had been transferring family assets for years.”

“Where is it?”

Lucas smiled bitterly.

“That's what everyone has been looking for.”

“Where is it?”

“With your mother.”

My heart stopped.

“She has it?”

“Yes.”

“Then why hasn't she used it?”

“Because the ledger contains more than financial records.”

“What else?”

“Names.”

“Whose names?”

Lucas looked directly at me.

“People who helped Edward.”

I thought of Vanessa.

Her mother.

Victor.

Samuel.

Maybe even people I had trusted.

“Who is on the list?”

Lucas shook his head.

“I don't know.”

“You don't know?”

“Your mother never told me.”

“Why?”

“Because she was protecting someone.”

“Who?”

Lucas's expression hardened.

“You.”

I stared at him.

“Why would my mother protect me from a list?”

“Because the list isn't simply a list of criminals.”

“What is it?”

“It's a succession map.”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Lucas walked toward the wall.

He pointed at a diagram.

At the center was Edward Hale.

Around him were names.

Executives.

Lawyers.

Politicians.

Doctors.

Bankers.

Then, beneath all of them—

my name.

EMILY BENNETT.

Lucas said:

“Edward built a system designed to control the Hale inheritance.”

I looked at the diagram.

“But I was only five.”

“Exactly.”

“He was afraid of me?”

“He was afraid of what you would become.”

I frowned.

Lucas continued.

“Under the original trust, when you turned eighteen, the entire structure would have transferred to you.”

“Why?”

“Because your grandmother wanted to stop Edward.”

I stared.

“My grandmother?”

Lucas nodded.

“Your grandmother created the trust.”

“But Edward controlled it.”

“After she became ill.”

I remembered the hidden records.

Margaret's old illness.

The hospital.

The medication.

Someone had manipulated her.

“Was my grandmother poisoned?”

Lucas's eyes darkened.

“Yes.”

I felt sick.

“By Edward?”

“We believe so.”

“Then why didn't anyone stop him?”

“Because he controlled the doctors.”

The room went silent.

Suddenly, Vanessa spoke.

“My brother.”

We turned.

“What about him?” Lucas asked.

Vanessa looked at the old photograph.

“Michael was investigating the hospital.”

“Yes.”

“He told me he had found something.”

“When?”

“The week before he disappeared.”

“What did he find?”

Vanessa's hands trembled.

“A room.”

Lucas's expression changed.

“What room?”

“Room 17.”

I stared.

The blue room.

The place where my mother had hidden the records.

“What was inside?”

Vanessa looked at me.

“Your childhood medical file.”

I frowned.

“I already found it.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You found a copy.”

I froze.

“There was an original.”

“Where?”

Vanessa looked toward the floor.

“Beneath the hospital.”

Lucas nodded slowly.

“The lower archive.”

“Does it still exist?”

Vanessa looked at him.

“Yes.”

Lucas's face hardened.

“Then Edward has been keeping it.”

A sound came from above us.

Footsteps.

Lucas immediately turned off the lights.

We froze.

Someone was walking through the corridor outside.

Slowly.

Then the door opened.

A man stepped inside.

Edward Hale.

He looked exactly as he had on the monitor.

Older.

Calm.

Perfectly dressed.

He closed the door behind him.

“You should have listened to me, Lucas.”

Lucas stepped in front of me.

“You're not touching her.”

Edward smiled.

“I don't need to.”

He looked at Vanessa.

“You've been very disappointing.”

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

“I had no choice.”

“Everyone has a choice.”

His gaze returned to me.

“Your mother said the same thing.”

My heart pounded.

“You know where she is.”

Edward smiled.

“Yes.”

“Take me to her.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because you're not ready.”

I stepped forward.

“You don't decide that.”

Edward laughed softly.

“You still sound like Claire.”

I stared at him.

“You destroyed her life.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“She destroyed herself.”

“What did she do?”

“She stole something from me.”

“The ledger?”

Edward's expression changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

Real fear.

He turned toward Lucas.

“You told her.”

Lucas said nothing.

Edward's eyes returned to me.

“You have no idea what that ledger contains.”

“Then tell me.”

“I won't.”

“Why?”

“Because once you know, you will never be able to go back.”

I stepped closer.

“I don't want to go back.”

Edward stared at me.

Then he smiled.

“Good.”

He pressed a button.

The lights came on.

The monitors surrounding the room activated.

Every screen showed the same image.

My mother.

Alive.

Sitting in a small room.

Her hands were tied.

I stopped breathing.

“Mom.”

She looked toward the camera.

Her face was older.

But her eyes were the same.

She whispered:

“Emily.”

I moved toward the screen.

Edward stepped aside.

“You want her?”

“Yes.”

“Then bring me the will.”

I stared at him.

“The original will.”

“You already stole it.”

“I didn't.”

Edward smiled.

“You're wrong.”

He turned toward Lucas.

“Your father was never very good at keeping secrets.”

Lucas looked confused.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

“What?”

He listened.

Then slowly lowered the phone.

“What happened?” I asked.

Lucas looked at me.

“The will is gone.”

“I know.”

“No.”

His voice was shaken.

“The person who stole it just sent me a message.”

He showed me the screen.

There was a photograph.

The original will.

But beneath it was a second document.

A birth certificate.

My name.

And under Father

the name had been changed.

Not Lucas.

Not anyone in the Hale family.

Someone else.

Someone I had never heard of.

I stared at it.

“Who is that?”

Lucas shook his head.

“I don't know.”

Edward smiled.

“Now you understand.”

I looked at him.

“Understand what?”

He stepped closer.

“The biggest lie wasn't who your father was.”

He pointed toward the birth certificate.

“It was who your mother believed your father was.”

My blood turned cold.

Edward leaned toward me.

“And the man named on that certificate…”

He paused.

“…is the reason your mother disappeared.”

The room went silent.

Then every monitor went black.

A single sentence appeared across the screens.

YOUR FATHER IS NOT LUCAS HALE.

Vanessa gasped.

Lucas stared at the screen.

And I realized that the man I had just met—

the man I had spent my entire life searching for—

might not be my father at all.

But before anyone could speak, another message appeared.

FIND MICHAEL VOSS.

Then beneath it:

HE IS THE ONLY ONE WHO KNOWS THE TRUTH.

The screens went dark.

Edward was gone.

And for the first time, I understood the real danger.

My family had not been hiding one secret.

They had been hiding an entire bloodline.

And somewhere in the darkness—

May you like

the brother who had supposedly disappeared twenty-seven years ago…

might still be alive.
