CHAPTER ONE

CHAPTER ONE

THE WOMAN IN THE UNIFORM

The Grand Alcazar Hotel had been built for people who believed money could make anything disappear.

Guilt.

Scandal.

Broken marriages.

Bad investments.

Even grief.

Behind its enormous bronze doors, everything was polished until it looked perfect.

The marble floors reflected the chandeliers.

The crystal glasses never showed fingerprints.

The staff smiled even when guests screamed.

And the wealthy came here because they knew one simple truth.

At the Grand Alcazar, nobody asked questions.

Julian Rossi had always appreciated that.

Until tonight.

He stepped through the revolving doors at precisely 7:42 p.m.

His black coat was perfectly tailored.

His watch cost more than most people's homes.

His name alone was enough to make the concierge straighten his back.

Julian Rossi didn't enter hotels.

Hotels prepared themselves for Julian Rossi.

At thirty-eight, he had built an empire that stretched across Europe.

Luxury resorts.

Commercial towers.

Shipping companies.

Private investment funds.

He was the kind of man newspapers described as untouchable.

But tonight, his mind wasn't on business.

He was thinking about Camila.

She walked beside him in an emerald-green evening gown.

Four months.

That was how long she had been in his life.

Four months of dinners.

Four months of photographs.

Four months of carefully timed appearances.

Four months of people whispering that Julian Rossi had finally moved on.

Camila smiled as they crossed the lobby.

“I booked the rooftop table.”

Julian barely heard her.

“And after dinner, I thought we could try the private spa.”

“Mm.”

“And tomorrow morning, there's a yacht excursion.”

“Fine.”

Camila stopped walking.

“Julian.”

He looked at her.

“What?”

“You haven't heard a word I've said.”

“I've been working all day.”

She smiled.

“You're always working.”

Julian checked his phone.

Twenty-seven unread emails.

Three missed calls from his chief financial officer.

One message from his father.

We need to talk tonight.

Julian frowned.

His father rarely sent messages like that.

Camila touched his arm.

“Forget work.”

Julian looked at her.

“I'll try.”

She smiled.

Then it happened.

A voice came from behind him.

“Good evening, sir. Do you require assistance with your luggage or fresh linens for your suite?”

Julian stopped.

His entire body went rigid.

The voice.

He knew that voice.

Not from business.

Not from a hotel.

From his dreams.

From memories.

From the nights he couldn't sleep.

He slowly turned.

And the world stopped.

Elena.

His wife.

Standing ten feet away.

She wore a shapeless gray housekeeping uniform.

A name badge was pinned above her chest.

ELENA.

Her dark hair was pulled into a messy knot.

Her face was thinner.

Her skin paler.

Her hands were red and cracked from cleaning chemicals.

But Julian barely noticed any of that.

His eyes dropped to her stomach.

And his heart stopped.

She was pregnant.

Not slightly.

Not recently.

Heavily.

Seven months, perhaps.

Maybe more.

Julian couldn't breathe.

“Elena.”

The housekeeping cart beside her rattled slightly.

Her fingers tightened around its handle.

But she didn't run.

She didn't scream.

She didn't look surprised.

Instead, she lowered her head politely.

“Is there anything else I can assist you with, sir?”

Sir.

Julian felt as if she had slapped him.

“Don't call me that.”

She remained silent.

“Look at me.”

Slowly, Elena raised her eyes.

Their gazes met.

Eight months of questions collided in that single moment.

Where had you gone?

Why did you leave?

Why didn't you call?

Why did you abandon me?

Why didn't you tell me you were alive?

And most importantly—

Who was the father of her child?

Julian's eyes moved to her stomach again.

His voice became hoarse.

“Are you pregnant?”

Elena said nothing.

“Answer me.”

“I'm working.”

“That's not an answer.”

Her eyes hardened.

“You are a guest.”

Julian stepped closer.

“And you're my wife.”

Several people in the lobby turned.

Camila's expression changed.

“Your wife?”

Julian didn't look at her.

“Elena.”

The woman he had spent eight months mourning looked at him as though he were a stranger.

“You should go upstairs, Mr. Rossi.”

“Why?”

“Your room is ready.”

“I don't care about my room.”

“I do.”

“What?”

“I need to finish my shift.”

Julian stared at her.

“You're working here?”

“Yes.”

“As a housekeeper?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Elena looked away.

“Because I need the job.”

Julian felt something twist inside his chest.

“You have access to everything I own.”

“I know.”

“You could buy this entire hotel.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you cleaning floors?”

Elena's eyes flickered.

“Because I don't want anything from you.”

Julian stared at her.

That sentence hurt more than he expected.

“You disappeared.”

“I left.”

“You vanished without telling me where you were.”

“Yes.”

“I spent months looking for you.”

“I know.”

“You knew?”

She nodded.

“You knew I thought you were dead?”

Her lips trembled.

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't you come back?”

Elena didn't answer.

Julian's voice became quieter.

“Was there someone else?”

She looked at him.

“No.”

“Then whose child is that?”

Elena's face changed.

Her hand immediately moved over her stomach.

Protectively.

Julian noticed.

Something inside him cracked.

“Is it mine?”

She looked away.

“Please leave.”

“Is it mine?”

“Julian.”

“Tell me.”

“I can't.”

“You can't?”

She shook her head.

“Not here.”

“Then where?”

“Nowhere.”

Camila stepped forward.

“Julian, this is inappropriate.”

Elena looked at Camila for the first time.

Her expression was unreadable.

Camila smiled coldly.

“So you're Elena.”

Elena said nothing.

“The famous wife.”

Julian turned.

“Camila.”

“What?”

“Don't.”

Camila crossed her arms.

“I was only asking.”

Elena lowered her eyes.

Julian stepped between them.

“Go upstairs.”

Camila stared at him.

“You're serious?”

“Yes.”

“You're choosing her?”

Julian looked at Elena.

“I don't know what I'm choosing.”

Camila's face tightened.

“Then I'm going upstairs.”

She walked toward the elevator.

But before the doors closed, she turned.

Her eyes met Elena's.

For one brief second, the two women stared at each other.

And Elena's expression changed.

Fear.

Not jealousy.

Not anger.

Fear.

Julian noticed.

“Camila.”

The elevator doors closed.

He turned back to Elena.

“Why are you afraid of her?”

Elena immediately looked away.

“I'm not.”

“You are.”

“No.”

“Elena.”

She pushed the cart forward.

“I have work.”

Julian followed.

“Stop.”

She didn't.

He caught her wrist.

She flinched violently.

Julian released her immediately.

“I’m sorry.”

Elena stared at him.

He had never seen fear like that in her eyes.

“Who hurt you?”

She shook her head.

“Who?”

“I have to work.”

“Was it my father?”

Her face went pale.

Julian froze.

There.

That reaction.

He had his answer.

“My father.”

Elena looked toward the security cameras.

Then whispered:

“Don't ask questions here.”

Julian followed her gaze.

There were cameras everywhere.

One above the reception desk.

One near the elevators.

One pointed directly at the housekeeping corridor.

He looked back at her.

“Are they watching you?”

She didn't answer.

“Elena.”

She whispered:

“Please.”

Then she pushed the cart away.

Julian watched her disappear through a staff-only door.

He stood motionless.

A few seconds later, the hotel manager approached.

“Mr. Rossi.”

Julian turned.

“Who hired her?”

The manager hesitated.

“I'm sorry?”

“Who hired Elena?”

“I don't know.”

“She's my wife.”

The manager swallowed.

“I wasn't aware.”

“Everyone knows who Elena Rossi is.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Then why is she working here?”

“I truly don't know.”

Julian stepped closer.

“Find out.”

“Yes, sir.”

“And don't tell anyone I asked.”

The manager nodded.

Julian turned toward the elevators.

Then stopped.

A thought suddenly occurred to him.

If Elena had been hiding for eight months...

Why had she chosen his hotel?

There were hundreds of hotels in the city.

She could have gone anywhere.

Yet she had come here.

To the one place where Julian could eventually find her.

Unless—

She hadn't chosen it.

Someone had placed her there.

At midnight, Julian entered the security office.

The hotel manager followed nervously.

“Mr. Rossi, this is highly unusual.”

“Show me the staff records.”

“Yes.”

“Everything concerning Elena.”

The manager pulled up her file.

Julian read it.

Name: Elena Rossi.

Age: thirty-two.

Position: Housekeeping assistant.

Employment start date: eight months ago.

Emergency contact: blank.

Previous address: blank.

Bank account: newly opened.

Julian frowned.

“Who processed this?”

The manager looked at the screen.

“Human resources.”

“Name.”

“Marissa Cole.”

“Call her.”

“She isn't here.”

“Then wake her up.”

The manager hesitated.

Julian's voice hardened.

“Now.”

The manager picked up the phone.

While he waited, Julian noticed another entry.

Medical accommodation: pregnancy.

He stared.

“Why didn't I see this?”

The manager looked confused.

“Sir?”

“This.”

He pointed.

“Pregnancy accommodation.”

The manager's face changed.

“I'm sorry.”

“When was this added?”

“Six weeks ago.”

“By whom?”

The manager checked.

Then froze.

“It doesn't say.”

Julian leaned closer.

“What do you mean it doesn't say?”

“The record was manually entered.”

“By whom?”

“No name.”

Julian's eyes narrowed.

Someone had altered Elena's file.

Someone had protected her identity.

Someone inside his own hotel knew exactly who she was.

And had been helping her.

The manager suddenly received an incoming call.

He answered.

“Hello?”

His face changed.

He handed the phone to Julian.

“It's for you.”

Julian took it.

“Hello?”

A man's voice answered.

Low.

Calm.

Familiar.

“You should stop looking for your wife.”

Julian's blood ran cold.

“Who is this?”

“You've already found her.”

“Who are you?”

The man laughed softly.

“And now you're going to lose her again.”

Julian tightened his grip on the phone.

“If you touch her—”

“You still don't understand.”

“What?”

“She isn't the one in danger.”

Julian's voice lowered.

“Then who is?”

A pause.

Then:

“You are.”

The call ended.

Julian stared at the phone.

The manager looked terrified.

“Mr. Rossi?”

Julian slowly turned.

“Lock down the hotel.”

“What?”

“No one leaves.”

“Sir—”

“Lock it down.”

He walked toward the door.

Then stopped.

“Where is Elena?”

The manager swallowed.

“Staff quarters.”

“Take me there.”

The staff corridor was dark.

Unlike the glamorous lobby, this part of the hotel was narrow and cold.

Fluorescent lights flickered overhead.

Julian walked quickly.

Then stopped.

A door stood open.

Inside was a tiny room.

One bed.

One wardrobe.

One small table.

And a framed ultrasound photograph.

Julian approached it slowly.

His fingers trembled as he picked it up.

There was handwriting on the back.

He turned it over.

Five words.

Our baby deserves a father.

Julian stopped breathing.

Our baby.

Not her baby.

Not someone else's baby.

Our baby.

He turned toward the hallway.

“Elena?”

No answer.

He ran through the corridor.

He found her near the service elevator.

She was alone.

Her face was pale.

Julian held up the ultrasound.

“You wrote this.”

Elena froze.

“You knew I would find you.”

She looked down.

“I hoped you would.”

Julian's anger disappeared.

“What happened?”

Tears filled her eyes.

“I can't tell you everything.”

“Tell me something.”

She shook her head.

“Please.”

“Who is threatening you?”

She whispered:

“Your father.”

Julian's jaw tightened.

“What did he do?”

Elena looked at him.

“He told me that if I stayed with you…”

She placed a trembling hand over her stomach.

“…our child would never be born.”

Julian felt the blood drain from his face.

“And you believed him?”

“I saw what he was capable of.”

“What did he do?”

Elena looked toward the security camera above them.

“He made someone disappear.”

Julian's heart pounded.

“Who?”

She looked directly into his eyes.

“Your mother.”

Silence.

Julian stepped backward.

“My mother died of cancer.”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

“She died three years ago.”

“I know.”

“You're saying my father killed her?”

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

“I'm saying…”

She swallowed.

“…your mother was alive when I disappeared.”

Julian couldn't speak.

Elena reached for his hand.

Then stopped herself.

“Go home.”

“Why?”

“Look inside your father's study.”

“What am I looking for?”

“A blue file.”

“What is in it?”

She whispered:

“The reason your father wanted me gone.”

The service elevator doors opened.

Elena stepped inside.

Julian followed.

“I'm coming with you.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“I'm not leaving you again.”

“You already did.”

The doors began closing.

Julian's heart broke.

“Elena.”

She looked at him one final time.

“Find the file.”

The doors closed.

Julian stood alone.

Then his phone vibrated.

A message.

One photograph.

His father's study.

A blue folder lying open on the desk.

And beneath it—

a photograph of a woman Julian had buried three years ago.

His mother.

Alive.

Julian stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

NOW YOU KNOW WHY SHE RAN.

Julian looked toward the elevator.

His wife was carrying his child.

His mother might still be alive.

And his father had been lying to him for years.

The perfect life Julian Rossi thought he owned had never been real.

It had been a carefully constructed prison.

And tonight, for the first time, one of its doors had opened.

Julian stepped toward the exit.

His expression hardened.

He wasn't going to sleep.

He wasn't going to negotiate.

And he wasn't going to forgive.

Not until he found the truth.

Even if the truth destroyed the entire Rossi empire.

Even if it destroyed his father.

Even if it destroyed him.

Because somewhere inside the Grand Alcazar Hotel was the woman he had loved for seven years.

The woman carrying his child.

The woman who had been forced to scrub the floors of a luxury resort while he believed she had abandoned him.

And Julian Rossi had finally realized the cruelest part of the story.

Elena had never walked away from him.

She had been pushed away.

May you like

And the person who pushed her…

was someone Julian had trusted with his life.
