CHAPTER THIRTEEN

CHAPTER THIRTEEN
THE NIGHT OF THE RECORDING
The recording began with a door closing.
That was all.
One quiet click.
One ordinary sound.
Yet years later, Elena would remember it as the sound that divided her life into two halves.
Before the recording.
And after it.
The hidden room beneath the Rossi mansion had been abandoned for years.
Dust covered the shelves.
Old ledgers were stacked against the walls.
A single desk stood beneath a dead chandelier.
Elena entered alone.
Julian had gone upstairs with Luca.
Camila was searching the eastern wing.
Richard had disappeared after their confrontation.
And somewhere inside the mansion, Sophia Rossi was hiding with a child everyone believed was dead.
Elena knew they were running out of time.
She also knew something else.
The documents they had found were powerful.
But documents could be forged.
Signatures could be disputed.
Witnesses could change their stories.
They needed something nobody could explain away.
A recording.
The original conversation.
The one that had started everything.
Elena remembered something Matteo had told her years ago.
“When paper lies, find the voice.”
At the time, she hadn't understood.
Now she did.
She searched the desk.
Nothing.
She opened the drawers.
Nothing.
Then she noticed the wooden panel behind the bookshelf.
It was slightly crooked.
Elena pushed it.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside was a small black recorder.
Her heart stopped.
There was a date written across it.
Six years ago.
The night her first child disappeared.
Elena's hands began to shake.
She pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then—
a voice.
Richard.
“She cannot know.”
Elena covered her mouth.
Another voice answered.
Sophia.
“She already suspects.”
Richard:
“Then make her doubt herself.”
Elena stopped breathing.
Sophia laughed softly.
“And Julian?”
Richard:
“I'll handle my son.”
The recording continued.
“What about the child?”
Silence.
Then Sophia answered:
“The child is the problem.”
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
She remembered that night.
The hospital.
The screaming.
The nurse who had told her the baby was gone.
The empty bassinet.
The doctor's expression.
The papers she had been forced to sign.
She had believed her child was dead.
But now she heard Sophia's voice.
“If the child survives, the trust remains protected.”
Richard asked:
“Then what do you want me to do?”
Sophia replied:
“Make sure Elena never sees the child again.”
Elena froze.
The recording continued.
Then came another voice.
A male voice.
Calm.
Cold.
Familiar.
Adrian Voss.
“You are making this more complicated than necessary.”
Elena's blood ran cold.
Sophia answered:
“You promised me control.”
Voss:
“And you will have it.”
Richard:
“What about Julian?”
Voss laughed.
“Julian is irrelevant.”
Elena's hands trembled.
Then Voss said the sentence that changed everything.
“The trust was never designed for Julian.”
Silence.
“It was designed for the children.”
Elena stopped the recording.
Her breathing became shallow.
She knew what that meant.
The entire marriage.
The divorce.
The affair.
The resort.
The lies.
The missing children.
Everything had been built around one objective.
Control the heirs.
Not Julian.
Not Elena.
The children.
She pressed play again.
Voss continued.
“If you want the Rossi empire, you don't destroy the father.”
“You control the mother.”
Richard asked:
“And Elena?”
Voss answered:
“Make her believe Julian betrayed her.”
Elena closed her eyes.
That was it.
The lie that had destroyed her marriage.
Not an accident.
Not a misunderstanding.
A plan.
A deliberate psychological attack.
They had wanted her to leave.
They had wanted Julian to believe she abandoned him.
They had wanted the marriage destroyed without either of them realizing who was responsible.
Then came the final revelation.
Sophia whispered:
“And Camila?”
Voss answered:
“She will take care of Julian.”
Elena's eyes widened.
Camila.
Everything had been planned before Camila ever entered Julian's life.
The recording ended.
Elena stood completely still.
Then she heard footsteps.
Someone was behind her.
She turned.
Richard stood in the doorway.
His face was pale.
“You found it.”
Elena gripped the recorder.
“You knew.”
Richard didn't answer.
“You knew this existed.”
“Yes.”
“You knew my child survived.”
Richard closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
“You knew Sophia took my baby.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Voss was behind everything.”
“Yes.”
Elena's voice broke.
“And you let me suffer for six years.”
Richard looked at her.
“I was trying to keep you alive.”
“You call this alive?”
“I had no choice.”
Elena stepped closer.
“You always say that.”
Richard looked exhausted.
“You don't understand what Voss is capable of.”
“I don't care.”
“He controls governments.”
“I don't care.”
“He controls banks.”
“I don't care.”
“He has killed people.”
Elena raised the recorder.
“And now I have his voice.”
Richard stared at it.
For the first time—
he looked afraid.
Julian entered the room.
“What happened?”
Elena turned.
She held out the recorder.
“I found it.”
Julian took it.
“What is it?”
“The truth.”
He pressed play.
They listened together.
When the recording ended, Julian stood motionless.
His father.
His mother.
Voss.
All three conspiring.
His face was devastated.
But Elena wasn't looking at him.
She was staring at the final line in the transcript.
A line she hadn't noticed before.
SUBJECT: PROJECT AURELIA
Julian noticed it.
“What is Project Aurelia?”
Elena shook her head.
“I don't know.”
They searched the hidden room.
Under the desk, they found another box.
Inside were medical records.
Birth records.
DNA reports.
And photographs.
Three children.
Luca.
Amelia.
And the first child.
Elena picked up the photograph.
Her hands trembled.
The child was six years old.
Dark hair.
Green eyes.
A small scar beneath the left eyebrow.
Julian stared.
“I know that scar.”
Elena looked at him.
“You do?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“It's from a photograph of me when I was six.”
Elena's heart stopped.
Julian looked closer.
The child's face resembled his.
But there was something else.
The eyes.
Elena whispered:
“She's ours.”
Julian nodded.
“Our daughter.”
A voice came from behind them.
“No.”
They turned.
Sophia stood in the doorway.
She was holding the child.
The little girl looked at Elena.
Then at Julian.
Sophia's voice was cold.
“She isn't your daughter anymore.”
Julian stepped forward.
“Give her to me.”
Sophia smiled.
“You don't understand.”
“I understand perfectly.”
“No.”
She looked at Elena.
“She was never meant to be yours.”
Elena's voice shook.
“She is my child.”
Sophia laughed.
“She is the heir.”
Julian stared.
“That doesn't change anything.”
“It changes everything.”
Sophia held the child closer.
“The moment she was born, the trust belonged to her.”
Julian's expression hardened.
“So you stole her.”
“I protected her.”
“You kidnapped her.”
“I saved her from you.”
Elena stepped forward.
“You lied to me.”
Sophia looked at her.
“I made you strong.”
“You destroyed me.”
“No.”
Sophia's eyes became cold.
“I made you leave.”
Elena froze.
Sophia continued.
“Because if you had stayed, Voss would have killed all three children.”
Silence.
Julian looked at her.
“Then why work with him?”
Sophia didn't answer.
Elena understood.
“You betrayed him.”
Sophia smiled.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I never intended to give him the empire.”
Julian's face changed.
“Then what did you intend?”
Sophia looked at the little girl.
“To give it to her.”
The child looked confused.
“To my granddaughter.”
Elena stepped closer.
“What is her name?”
Sophia hesitated.
Then answered:
“Aurelia.”
Elena's heart stopped.
The name.
The forbidden name.
The name that could activate the trust.
The name that could destroy Voss.
The name that could change everything.
Julian looked at Elena.
“You were carrying her.”
Elena nodded.
“But you didn't know.”
“No.”
Sophia smiled.
“You were never supposed to.”
Suddenly, the lights went out.
A gunshot echoed.
Sophia screamed.
The child slipped from her arms.
Julian lunged forward.
He caught her.
Elena grabbed both of them.
Then another shot shattered the wall.
Camila appeared in the doorway.
“DOWN!”
They dropped.
Camila fired toward the corridor.
“Voss found us.”
Julian held Aurelia tightly.
“How?”
Camila looked at the recorder.
“He has a copy.”
Julian froze.
“What?”
Camila's face was grim.
“There were two recorders.”
Elena's blood ran cold.
“One in this room.”
“And one in Voss's possession.”
Julian stared.
“Then he knows everything.”
Camila nodded.
“He knows about Aurelia.”
She looked at the child.
“And now he knows she's alive.”
Aurelia began crying.
Elena pulled her close.
“It's okay.”
But Camila shook her head.
“No.”
She looked toward the dark hallway.
“It's not.”
Then they heard footsteps.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Approaching.
Adrian Voss appeared at the end of the corridor.
He wasn't holding a gun.
He didn't need one.
He smiled.
“You found the recording.”
Julian stood between him and the children.
Voss looked at Aurelia.
“My granddaughter.”
Elena's blood ran cold.
Voss continued:
“After six years, you're finally back where you belong.”
Julian tightened his grip on the child.
“She belongs with us.”
Voss smiled.
“We'll see.”
Elena stepped forward.
“No.”
Everyone looked at her.
She held up the recorder.
“You're finished.”
Voss laughed.
“You think one recording destroys me?”
“No.”
Elena looked at Julian.
Then Camila.
Then the child.
“It doesn't.”
She pressed another button.
A small red light appeared.
Recording.
Voss's smile disappeared.
Elena had started recording him.
“You've spent years controlling everyone through fear.”
She stepped closer.
“But tonight, you're going to tell us everything.”
Voss stared at her.
“You think I'll confess?”
Elena smiled.
“No.”
She held up the recorder.
“I think you'll threaten us.”
Silence.
“And that's enough.”
Voss's expression changed.
For the first time—
he realized Elena had learned his greatest weakness.
He could control people.
He could manipulate documents.
He could buy silence.
But he couldn't erase his own voice twice.
Elena looked directly at him.
“Tell me what happened to our first child.”
Voss said nothing.
“Tell me who ordered the kidnapping.”
Silence.
“Tell me why Aurelia's name was erased.”
Still nothing.
Then Voss smiled.
“You really want the truth?”
“Yes.”
He looked at Julian.
“Then ask your father.”
Julian's face changed.
Voss continued:
“Because Richard didn't merely help us.”
“He started it.”
The room went silent.
Elena turned toward Richard.
He stood behind them.
Crying.
Julian stared at his father.
“Dad?”
Richard whispered:
“I was trying to protect you.”
Julian's voice broke.
“Protect me from what?”
Richard looked at Aurelia.
“From the truth.”
Elena's fingers tightened around the recorder.
The recording was still running.
May you like
And Richard finally began to speak.
Not knowing that every word he said would soon destroy the entire Rossi conspiracy.
