CHAPTER NINE
THE RESORT'S SECRET
Julian Rossi had always believed the Grand Alcazar was one of the safest places in Europe.
That belief lasted until he discovered the basement.
The resort had been built to impress the world.
Its marble lobby had appeared in magazines.
Its rooftop restaurant had hosted presidents, actors, princes, and billionaires.
Its private villas had been booked years in advance.
But beneath the polished floors and crystal chandeliers was another world entirely.
A world Julian had never known existed.
And Elena had been living inside it.
For eight months.
Julian arrived at the Grand Alcazar before sunrise.
He didn't tell Camila.
He didn't tell Richard.
He didn't tell Marcus.
He only brought one thing with him.
The photograph of Elena.
The woman he had believed was hiding from him.
The woman he now understood had been hiding from something far more dangerous.
He walked through the revolving doors.
The same lobby.
The same marble.
The same chandeliers.
But everything felt different.
Eight months ago, he had walked through these doors with Camila.
He had seen Elena in a housekeeping uniform.
He had watched her lower her eyes.
He had asked:
What are you doing here?
She had answered:
I am on shift. Please proceed to your suite.
At the time, he had been furious.
Now he understood.
She hadn't been refusing to speak to him.
She had been warning him.
Not here.
Not in public.
Not where they could hear us.
Julian walked to the concierge desk.
“I'm looking for the general manager.”
The concierge recognized him immediately.
“Mr. Rossi.”
“Where is he?”
“He's in his office.”
“Take me there.”
The concierge hesitated.
“Is there a problem?”
Julian looked at him.
“There has been a problem for eight months.”
The general manager's office overlooked the gardens.
Mr. Adrian Bell stood when Julian entered.
“Mr. Rossi.”
“Close the door.”
Bell did.
Julian placed the photograph on the desk.
“Where is Elena?”
Bell looked at the photograph.
His expression changed.
“You know her.”
Bell didn't answer.
Julian's voice hardened.
“You employed my wife.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“She needed work.”
“That's not what I asked.”
Bell looked away.
“She came here under a different name.”
“What name?”
“Mrs. Elena Moreau.”
Julian frowned.
“Why?”
“She requested confidentiality.”
“You knew she was my wife.”
“I discovered it later.”
“When?”
“Three months after she arrived.”
“And you didn't tell me?”
Bell's face tightened.
“She asked us not to.”
Julian leaned forward.
“Why?”
Bell was silent.
Then said:
“Because she told us you were dangerous.”
Julian froze.
“She said that?”
“Yes.”
Julian looked at the photograph.
The words hurt.
But he knew why she had said them.
Someone had forced her to create distance.
“What else did she tell you?”
Bell hesitated.
“She said if you ever came looking for her, we were not to give you any information.”
“Who gave her those instructions?”
“I don't know.”
“Then find out.”
Bell shook his head.
“You don't understand.”
“Make me understand.”
Bell locked the office door.
Then lowered his voice.
“The Grand Alcazar isn't just a resort.”
Julian stared at him.
“What is it?”
“A safe house.”
“For whom?”
Bell looked toward the window.
“People who need to disappear.”
Julian said nothing.
Bell continued.
“For years, wealthy families have used the hotel to hide scandals.”
“That's not illegal.”
“No.”
Bell swallowed.
“But some guests aren't hiding from journalists.”
“Who?”
“Witnesses.”
Julian's expression changed.
“Witnesses to what?”
“Financial crimes. Political corruption. Corporate theft.”
“And Elena?”
“She wasn't hiding from the law.”
“Then who?”
Bell stared at him.
“People like Adrian Voss.”
Julian's blood went cold.
“You knew Voss used this place?”
Bell nodded.
“He has a private floor.”
“Where?”
“Below the main hotel.”
Julian's eyes narrowed.
“I've owned part of this resort for years.”
Bell looked at him.
“Your family owns the building.”
“What's the difference?”
“The building is yours.”
Bell paused.
“The basement isn't.”
Julian stared.
“What does that mean?”
“There is a separate ownership agreement.”
“With whom?”
Bell handed him a document.
Julian read the name.
VOSS PRIVATE SECURITY GROUP.
His stomach dropped.
“The basement belongs to Voss.”
“Yes.”
“And my father knew.”
“Yes.”
“Does Elena know?”
Bell nodded.
“She discovered it.”
“When?”
“Shortly after she started working here.”
Julian looked up.
“How?”
“She found a door.”
“What door?”
“Service corridor B.”
Bell led Julian downstairs.
The elevator required a keycard.
Bell inserted his.
The doors opened.
They descended.
One floor.
Two.
Three.
Then the elevator continued.
Julian looked at the display.
There was no fourth floor.
Yet the elevator kept moving.
He stared at Bell.
“What is this?”
Bell didn't answer.
The doors opened.
A corridor stretched into darkness.
No marble.
No chandeliers.
No luxury.
Only concrete.
Steel doors.
Security cameras.
Julian walked out.
“This is under the hotel?”
“Yes.”
“How many rooms?”
“Twenty-four.”
“Who stays here?”
Bell whispered:
“People who officially don't exist.”
Julian stopped.
“Was Elena here?”
“Yes.”
“How many times?”
“Six.”
Julian's heart raced.
“When?”
“The first time was eight months ago.”
“The night she disappeared.”
Bell nodded.
“She didn't disappear.”
Julian turned.
“She came here voluntarily.”
“Why?”
“To escape the house.”
“What happened?”
Bell hesitated.
“She wasn't alone.”
Julian's face changed.
“Who was with her?”
Bell opened a door.
Inside was a small room.
A bed.
A chair.
A table.
And a security monitor.
Julian looked at the screen.
A recording.
Elena.
Eight months ago.
She was sitting in the chair.
Her face was bruised.
Julian's breathing stopped.
She looked directly into the camera.
“If Julian comes here, don't let him see this.”
The recording continued.
“I need him to believe I abandoned him.”
Julian closed his eyes.
His wife had planned everything.
Not because she wanted to leave.
Because she wanted to survive.
Elena continued:
“Richard knows about the children.”
Julian opened his eyes.
She looked terrified.
“He knows about the twins.”
Julian's heart stopped.
“He knows about Amelia.”
The screen went black.
Julian stared.
“Why didn't you show me this?”
Bell said quietly:
“Because we were ordered not to.”
“By Voss?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Bell looked at him.
“Your mother.”
Julian froze.
“My mother?”
“Yes.”
“She's been here.”
Bell nodded.
“Many times.”
Julian looked toward the corridor.
“Where is she now?”
“She left yesterday.”
“With Elena?”
Bell shook his head.
“No.”
“Then who?”
Bell hesitated.
“Your grandfather.”
Julian's blood ran cold.
“Matteo.”
“Yes.”
“He came here?”
“Last night.”
“Where did he go?”
Bell pointed toward the final door.
“Room 24.”
Julian walked toward it.
The door was locked.
He tried the handle.
Nothing.
Bell handed him a key.
“Your family has had access for generations.”
Julian inserted it.
The lock clicked.
He opened the door.
The room was empty.
But there was a table.
On the table—
three passports.
Julian picked up the first.
ELENA ROSSI.
Second:
AMELIA ROSSI.
Third:
LUCA ROSSI.
Julian froze.
His son's name.
Luca.
The child he had believed dead.
His hands trembled.
Then he noticed something beneath the passports.
A folder.
He opened it.
Inside were financial records.
Millions of dollars.
Transfers from Rossi Holdings.
Payments to private investigators.
Security firms.
Medical facilities.
Hotels.
And one recurring payment:
GRAND ALCAZAR — PROTECTION SERVICES.
Julian stared.
The resort had been paid to protect Elena.
But by whom?
He turned the page.
The payer wasn't Richard.
It wasn't Camila.
It wasn't Voss.
It was Julian's own account.
Again.
Someone had been using his identity.
But this time there was a signature.
His signature.
Perfectly copied.
Julian's face hardened.
The conspiracy had access to everything.
His money.
His legal identity.
His marriage.
His father's company.
Even his name.
Then he saw the date of the first payment.
Six years ago.
Three days after Luca and Amelia were born.
Julian's heart pounded.
The resort had been protecting his children long before he knew they were alive.
Which meant someone had planned their disappearance from the moment they were born.
A sound came from behind him.
Footsteps.
Julian turned.
Nobody.
Then the lights flickered.
Bell's face went pale.
“We need to leave.”
“Why?”
“Now.”
“Why?”
Bell pointed toward the security monitor.
A red light had appeared.
Someone had activated the system.
Then every door in the corridor locked simultaneously.
Click.
Click.
Click.
Click.
Julian looked at Bell.
“What is happening?”
Bell whispered:
“Someone knows you're here.”
A voice came through the speaker.
Calm.
Male.
Familiar.
“Julian.”
Julian froze.
Richard.
“Dad?”
The voice laughed softly.
“You should never have opened that room.”
Julian stepped toward the speaker.
“Where is Elena?”
“Safe.”
“Where?”
“You're asking the wrong question.”
“Then what should I ask?”
“Why did your wife choose this hotel?”
Julian's eyes narrowed.
Richard continued:
“Because she knew what was underneath it.”
“What?”
“A vault.”
Julian looked at the walls.
“What vault?”
“The Rossi family vault.”
Bell's expression changed.
“You knew?”
Julian looked at him.
Bell shook his head.
“I thought it was a rumor.”
Richard laughed.
“Your grandfather built it before you were born.”
“What is inside?”
“Everything.”
Julian's heart raced.
“Everything what?”
“The original trust.”
Silence.
Richard continued:
“The real one.”
Julian looked at the folder.
The payments.
The passports.
The records.
“This resort was built around the vault.”
“Yes.”
“And Elena discovered it.”
“Yes.”
“Why did she hide here?”
“Because she knew no one would search for her in a place you owned.”
Julian's voice became cold.
“You knew.”
“Of course.”
“You let me believe she abandoned me.”
“I had no choice.”
“You always say that.”
Richard's voice hardened.
“You don't understand what you're fighting.”
Julian looked at the screen.
“Then explain.”
A pause.
Then:
“Adrian Voss doesn't want the Rossi fortune.”
Julian frowned.
“What does he want?”
“He wants what's inside the vault.”
“What?”
“The original ownership records.”
Julian's heart stopped.
“Of what?”
“The entire empire.”
Julian stared.
Richard continued:
“Your grandfather never legally owned Rossi Holdings.”
“What?”
“He held it in trust.”
“For whom?”
Richard was silent.
Julian waited.
Then Richard said:
“For someone who isn't dead.”
The line went silent.
Julian's mind raced.
His grandfather.
His mother.
The hidden children.
The false divorce.
The resort.
The trust.
Everything was connected.
Then a metal door opened at the far end of the corridor.
Julian turned.
A woman stepped out.
Elena.
She was holding a small envelope.
Julian's heart stopped.
“Elena.”
She looked at him.
For one beautiful second, neither moved.
Then she ran toward him.
Julian caught her.
He held her tightly.
“You're alive.”
She cried against his chest.
“I told you I would survive.”
He pulled back.
“Where are the children?”
“Safe.”
“Where?”
“Not here.”
“Why?”
“Because this place isn't safe anymore.”
Julian looked at the envelope.
“What is that?”
Elena hesitated.
“The document that started everything.”
She handed it to him.
Julian opened it.
The first page contained an old legal agreement.
His grandfather's signature.
Then a second signature.
A name Julian had never seen before.
MATTEO ROSSI.
But the third signature—
made his blood freeze.
It belonged to Elena's father.
Julian looked at her.
“What does your father have to do with my family?”
Elena's face went pale.
“He wasn't my father.”
Julian frowned.
“What?”
Elena whispered:
“He was Voss's brother.”
Silence.
Julian stared at her.
The woman he loved had been connected to Adrian Voss from the beginning.
Her family.
His family.
The trust.
The children.
The resort.
Everything had been intertwined long before either of them knew.
Then the lights went out again.
This time, the emergency doors opened.
A dozen armed men entered the corridor.
Elena grabbed Julian's hand.
“Run.”
“Who are they?”
“Voss.”
Julian looked back.
“Where is Bell?”
Gone.
The general manager had disappeared.
Julian understood.
The resort had never been their sanctuary.
It had been a trap.
Elena pulled him toward a hidden passage.
They ran.
Behind them, footsteps thundered through the corridor.
Julian looked at Elena.
“How do we get out?”
She pointed ahead.
“There is another exit.”
“Where?”
“Under the ballroom.”
They emerged beneath the grand foyer.
Above them, guests were laughing.
Champagne glasses clinked.
Music played.
Nobody knew what was happening beneath their feet.
Julian looked up at the chandelier.
The perfect illusion.
Then Elena whispered:
“The vault is underneath us.”
Julian looked at her.
“Where?”
She pointed toward the ballroom floor.
“Exactly beneath the place where you first saw me.”
Julian remembered.
The housekeeping cart.
The marble floor.
Camila beside him.
Elena standing there.
Pregnant.
Exhausted.
Acting like a stranger.
It hadn't been an accident.
She had wanted him to find her.
She had chosen the Grand Alcazar because she knew he would eventually come there.
And now Julian finally understood the message hidden inside her silence.
She hadn't been waiting for rescue.
She had been waiting for him to discover the truth.
A siren suddenly sounded.
Guests began screaming.
The ballroom doors slammed shut.
Julian looked at Elena.
“What did you do?”
She stared at the floor.
“I opened the vault.”
Julian's heart stopped.
“You opened it?”
“Yes.”
“What did you find?”
Elena looked at him.
“The truth about who owns the Rossi empire.”
She paused.
“And Julian…”
“What?”
“The person who legally owns everything…”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“…isn't you.”
Julian stared.
“Then who?”
Elena looked toward the sealed ballroom.
“The child you were told died.”
Julian's heart stopped.
Luca.
His son.
The supposed dead heir.
Alive.
And according to the documents beneath the Grand Alcazar—
he was already the legal owner of the empire.
The lights came back on.
The ballroom doors opened.
And standing at the center of the room was a man Julian had believed dead for twenty years.
Matteo Rossi.
His grandfather.
Alive.
May you like
Holding a gun.
And smiling.
