Chapter 10 — The Woman Who Walked Into the Trap

Chapter 10 — The Woman Who Walked Into the Trap
Elena knew the moment she stepped through the hidden door that she had made a mistake.
Not because the passage was dark.
Not because the air smelled of damp stone and old machinery.
And not because somewhere far behind her, Blackwood Manor was still echoing with gunfire.
She knew because the door closed without a sound.
And when she turned around, there was no handle.
She was trapped.
For several seconds, Elena simply stood there.
Then she heard footsteps.
Slow.
Measured.
Coming from somewhere ahead.
She tightened her grip around the pistol.
“Who’s there?”
No answer.
Another step.
Then a man's voice emerged from the darkness.
“You always were impatient.”
Elena froze.
She knew that voice.
She had heard it once before.
Five years ago.
On a recording her father had forbidden her to listen to.
“Dad?”
The footsteps stopped.
A light flickered on.
And the man standing beneath it looked exactly as Elena remembered him.
Older.
Thinner.
His dark hair streaked with gray.
But unmistakably alive.
Viktor Rostov.
Her father.
Elena's pistol dropped slightly.
“You're alive.”
Viktor looked at her.
“I've been alive every day you've spent believing I was dead.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Why?”
He didn't answer.
She stepped closer.
“Why did you let me believe you were dead?”
“Because believing I was dead kept you alive.”
“You don't get to say that.”
“I know.”
“You let me grieve you.”
“I know.”
“You watched me build an entire life around a lie.”
Viktor's face tightened.
“I know.”
Elena's voice broke.
“I buried you.”
Viktor looked down.
“And I buried you too.”
For five years, Elena had imagined this moment.
She had imagined screaming.
Hitting him.
Demanding answers.
Instead, she simply stood there.
A daughter facing a father who had become a ghost.
Viktor stepped forward.
“You need to leave.”
Elena laughed bitterly.
“Leave?”
“Yes.”
“After I finally found you?”
“You shouldn't have found me.”
“Too late.”
He looked toward the corridor.
“They're coming.”
“Who?”
“Richard.”
Elena's expression hardened.
“Richard told us you were dead.”
“Richard tells everyone what they need to hear.”
“And Evelyn?”
“Worse.”
Elena stared at him.
“Everyone keeps saying Evelyn is the real enemy.”
Viktor shook his head.
“No.”
“Then who is?”
He looked directly at her.
“You are.”
Elena went still.
“What?”
Viktor's voice was quiet.
“You're the trap.”
Cassian had never been this angry.
He stood in the center of the control room while Evelyn watched him.
“Where is Elena?”
Evelyn didn't answer.
Cassian slammed his hand against the table.
“Where is she?”
“She went where she needed to go.”
“You knew she would enter the passage.”
“Yes.”
“You allowed it.”
“Yes.”
Cassian's jaw clenched.
“You used her.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“No.”
“You sent her into a trap.”
“No.”
“You knew Richard was waiting.”
“Yes.”
“Then what's the difference?”
Evelyn's expression remained calm.
“The difference is that Richard believes he captured her.”
Cassian stared.
“And he didn't?”
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because Elena chose to enter.”
Cassian frowned.
“She didn't know what was waiting.”
“She didn't need to.”
Evelyn walked toward the monitor.
“She has been preparing for this moment her entire life.”
Cassian looked at her.
“You're saying she knew?”
“No.”
Evelyn paused.
“She remembered.”
The hidden chamber beneath the manor was far larger than Elena expected.
Metal doors lined the walls.
Computers hummed.
Security cameras watched every corridor.
And at the center stood a long table covered in photographs.
Elena walked toward it.
Her photograph was there.
Cassian's.
Alexander's.
Mikhail's.
Her mother.
Viktor.
Richard.
Evelyn.
Every person connected to Black Winter.
At the center was one name.
ELENA ROSTOV.
Underneath it:
THE FINAL KEY.
Elena looked at her father.
“What does that mean?”
Viktor didn't answer.
She turned toward him.
“Dad.”
He sighed.
“Your mother and I were never ordinary members of Black Winter.”
“I know.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“You don't.”
He picked up a folder.
“We were architects.”
Elena stared.
“We helped design the original network.”
“Before Richard.”
“Yes.”
“Before Evelyn.”
Viktor hesitated.
“No.”
Elena frowned.
“Evelyn came first?”
“She created the financial structure.”
“Then Richard?”
“Richard militarized it.”
“And you?”
“I built the information network.”
Elena looked at the photographs.
“And my mother?”
Viktor's eyes darkened.
“She built the failsafe.”
“What failsafe?”
He placed a small metal box on the table.
“This.”
Elena stared.
It looked ordinary.
Almost worthless.
“What is it?”
“The only thing capable of destroying Black Winter.”
Elena looked up.
“Then why hasn't anyone used it?”
Viktor's answer chilled her.
“Because it requires your memory.”
Elena stepped backward.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“You said I was four.”
“You were.”
“I couldn't possibly remember something like that.”
“You didn't have to remember consciously.”
Viktor opened the box.
Inside was a small strip of film.
“Your mother encoded the access sequence into a children's lullaby.”
Elena stared.
“The song she used to sing.”
“Yes.”
“The one I couldn't remember?”
“You remembered it every night.”
Elena's breathing stopped.
She suddenly heard the melody.
Four notes.
Three.
Two.
Five.
Then seven.
One.
Nine.
Six.
She whispered:
“43257196.”
Viktor nodded.
“That is only the first sequence.”
Elena stared at him.
“There are more.”
“Yes.”
“How many?”
“Three.”
She looked toward the box.
“What's the final sequence?”
Viktor looked away.
“I don't know.”
Elena frowned.
“You built it.”
“Your mother changed it.”
“Why?”
“Because she knew one day Richard would find us.”
Elena closed her eyes.
“And she chose me.”
Viktor nodded.
“She trusted you.”
A door slammed somewhere in the corridor.
Viktor's expression changed.
“They're here.”
Elena raised her weapon.
“Richard?”
“No.”
“Evelyn?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Viktor whispered:
“Alexander.”
Elena frowned.
“He helped me.”
“That's what he wanted you to believe.”
She stared.
“You said he was your enemy.”
“I said nothing.”
“You knew he was here.”
“Yes.”
“You knew he'd come.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you warn me?”
Viktor's face hardened.
“Because I needed you to choose.”
“Choose what?”
“Whether to trust your brother.”
Elena looked toward the door.
“Do you?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because Alexander has spent twenty years trying to destroy Black Winter.”
Elena frowned.
“That sounds like a good thing.”
“It would be.”
Viktor paused.
“If he weren't trying to replace it.”
The door opened.
Alexander entered.
His hands were empty.
“Elena.”
She raised her weapon.
“Stay where you are.”
Alexander stopped.
He looked at Viktor.
“So you finally told her.”
Viktor said nothing.
Alexander smiled.
“I was wondering how long you'd keep lying.”
Elena stared at him.
“What do you want?”
“You.”
“Why?”
“Because you're the only person who can open the vault.”
“What vault?”
“The original vault.”
Viktor stepped forward.
“No.”
Alexander's expression hardened.
“You've hidden it long enough.”
“I won't let you use her.”
“You already used her.”
Viktor flinched.
Elena looked between them.
“What is he talking about?”
Alexander turned toward her.
“Your father didn't disappear to protect you.”
Elena's eyes narrowed.
“Then why?”
“Because he needed you to remain hidden.”
“From Richard?”
“No.”
“From Evelyn?”
“No.”
Alexander looked directly at her.
“From me.”
Silence.
Elena stared.
“You?”
Alexander nodded.
“I was hunting you.”
“Why?”
“Because I believed you were the key to everything.”
“And now?”
“I know better.”
“What changed?”
Alexander looked at Viktor.
“Your father.”
Cassian heard the explosion before he saw the smoke.
He ran toward the underground corridor.
Marcus followed.
Dante, injured but conscious, limped behind them.
Evelyn remained in the control room.
Cassian stopped at the sealed door.
“Open it.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.”
“Open it.”
“If you go down there, you may never come back.”
“I don't care.”
“You should.”
Cassian turned.
“Why?”
Evelyn stared at him.
“Because Richard doesn't want Elena.”
Cassian frowned.
“Then what does he want?”
Evelyn answered:
“You.”
Cassian's expression hardened.
“Why?”
“Because you are the last person who can activate the inheritance.”
“What inheritance?”
Evelyn sighed.
“The Thorne inheritance.”
Cassian laughed bitterly.
“You mean Black Winter.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“Something much older.”
Inside the chamber, Elena heard Cassian's voice.
“ELENA!”
She turned toward the door.
Viktor grabbed her arm.
“No.”
“That's Cassian.”
“You can't let him in.”
“Why?”
“Because Richard wants him.”
“And?”
Viktor stared at her.
“If Cassian enters this room, Richard wins.”
Elena froze.
“What?”
Viktor looked at the metal box.
“The failsafe doesn't destroy Black Winter.”
Elena's eyes narrowed.
“Then what does it do?”
Viktor's voice dropped.
“It transfers ownership.”
“To whom?”
He looked at her.
“To you.”
Elena went completely still.
Alexander's face changed.
“No.”
Viktor nodded.
“Yes.”
Alexander shook his head.
“That wasn't the original design.”
“Your father changed it.”
“When?”
“Before he died.”
Alexander stared.
“He knew?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't he tell me?”
“Because he didn't trust you.”
Alexander's face hardened.
“You're lying.”
Viktor looked at Elena.
“He trusted only her.”
Elena looked at the box.
Then at her father.
“You want me to control Black Winter?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
“To destroy it.”
“How?”
Viktor opened another compartment.
Inside was a key.
Not electronic.
Not digital.
An old brass key.
“Every empire has a foundation.”
He handed it to her.
“Remove the foundation.”
“And the empire collapses.”
“Yes.”
Elena stared at the key.
“What is this?”
“The master key.”
Alexander stepped forward.
“Don't.”
Elena looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because once you use it, every person connected to Black Winter will become your enemy.”
“Already are.”
“Not like this.”
“What happens?”
Alexander looked at Viktor.
“You become the legal owner of everything.”
Elena's expression changed.
“Everything?”
“Accounts.”
“Companies.”
“Safe houses.”
“Political connections.”
“Files.”
“Names.”
“Debts.”
“Enemies.”
She looked horrified.
“That isn't freedom.”
“No.”
Alexander whispered:
“It's a crown.”
The door exploded inward.
Cassian rushed through the smoke.
“Elena!”
She ran toward him.
He grabbed her.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“I thought—”
“I know.”
He looked at Viktor.
His face changed.
“Dad.”
Viktor stared at him.
“Cassian.”
Cassian froze.
“You're alive.”
“Yes.”
“You knew?”
Viktor looked away.
“I knew.”
Cassian stepped closer.
“Why didn't you come home?”
“Because I couldn't.”
“You could have.”
“No.”
“You could have called.”
“No.”
“You could have told me.”
“I couldn't.”
Cassian's voice broke.
“You let me think you were dead.”
Viktor's eyes filled.
“I thought that was the only way to keep you alive.”
Cassian stared at him.
“And was it?”
Viktor looked at Elena.
“No.”
Suddenly every monitor activated.
Richard appeared.
He was standing somewhere inside the manor.
“Enough.”
Cassian turned toward the screens.
Richard smiled.
“Family reunions are always emotional.”
Cassian raised his weapon toward the monitor.
“Show yourself.”
“I will.”
Richard held up a small device.
“The master key.”
Elena looked down.
Her hand tightened around the brass key.
Richard smiled.
“Give it to me.”
“No.”
“Then Cassian dies.”
A camera activated.
Cassian saw Marcus.
Dante.
Several guards.
All kneeling.
Weapons pointed at their heads.
Cassian's expression hardened.
“Let them go.”
“Give me the key.”
“No.”
Richard smiled.
“Then watch.”
A gun was raised behind Marcus.
Elena stepped forward.
“Stop.”
Cassian grabbed her.
“Don't.”
Richard looked at Elena.
“Smart girl.”
She stared at the screen.
“You don't want the key.”
Richard smiled.
“You understand quickly.”
“You want me.”
The smile disappeared.
Elena continued.
“You've been using Cassian as bait.”
Richard said nothing.
“You wanted me to come underground.”
Silence.
“You wanted me to remember.”
Richard's eyes narrowed.
“And now you're here.”
Elena looked at the brass key.
“Because you need me to activate the vault.”
Richard smiled again.
“Exactly.”
Cassian looked at Elena.
“Don't do it.”
She looked at him.
“If I don't, they die.”
“We'll find another way.”
“There isn't one.”
Viktor stepped forward.
“Elena.”
She shook her head.
“I know.”
She walked toward the vault door.
Alexander watched.
“Don't.”
Elena looked back.
“You said I was the trap.”
Alexander nodded.
“You were.”
She smiled faintly.
“Then let me spring it.”
She inserted the brass key.
The vault began to unlock.
Every light in the underground complex turned red.
Alarms screamed.
Richard's smile vanished.
“What are you doing?”
Elena turned the key.
“You wanted the empire.”
The vault door opened.
She looked directly at the camera.
“Now you can watch me destroy it.”
Richard's face went pale.
“No.”
The system began counting down.
10.
9.
Cassian stared.
“Elena!”
8.
Viktor shouted:
“Get back!”
7.
Alexander realized the truth.
“She changed the sequence.”
6.
Richard screamed:
“STOP HER!”
5.
Elena looked at Cassian.
He understood.
This wasn't destruction.
It was a transfer.
4.
Every screen in Blackwood Manor displayed the same message.
OWNERSHIP TRANSFER INITIATED.
3.
Richard's voice became desperate.
“Elena, don't!”
2.
She turned toward him.
“You should have killed the housekeeper when you had the chance.”
1.
The system went black.
Then one final message appeared.
NEW OWNER CONFIRMED.
ELENA ROSTOV.
Silence.
Cassian stared at her.
Evelyn's voice came through the speakers.
“No…”
Alexander looked terrified.
Viktor closed his eyes.
Elena stood in the center of the vault.
The woman who had spent years hiding beneath a uniform had just inherited the most dangerous criminal network on the continent.
And she had no intention of keeping it.
Because now she understood something Richard had never considered.
May you like
The person who controlled Black Winter didn't have to become its queen.
She could become its executioner.
