Chapter 12 — The King Who Burned His Empire

Chapter 12 — The King Who Burned His Empire

The child's voice came from the darkness.

“Mommy?”

Elena stopped breathing.

The vault door stood open.

Beyond it was not another archive.

Not a room filled with money, weapons, or ledgers.

It was a nursery.

A small bed.

A wooden rocking chair.

A faded stuffed rabbit.

And photographs covering the walls.

Photographs of Elena as a child.

Photographs of Viktor and Anya.

Photographs of Cassian.

Photographs of a little boy who looked exactly like Elena.

Her twin.

Adrian.

But the voice had not come from him.

A figure stepped from behind the bed.

Elena's knees nearly gave out.

A little girl stood there.

Maybe six years old.

Auburn hair.

Green eyes.

A familiar scar beneath her left eyebrow.

Elena whispered:

“Who are you?”

The girl stared at her.

Then she smiled.

“You're Elena.”

Elena couldn't speak.

The girl looked at Cassian.

“Is he the king?”

Cassian frowned.

“What?”

The child pointed toward the walls.

“Grandfather said the king would come.”

Elena felt cold spread through her body.

“Which grandfather?”

The girl looked toward the darkness behind her.

“Richard.”

Cassian immediately raised his weapon.

“Everyone stay behind me.”

Adrian stepped out.

His face was expressionless.

“You shouldn't have come here.”

Elena looked at him.

“You knew about her.”

“Yes.”

“Who is she?”

Adrian glanced toward the child.

“Her name is Sofia.”

Elena's heart pounded.

“Why is she here?”

Adrian didn't answer.

Cassian stepped closer.

“Answer her.”

Adrian looked at him.

“She is Richard's last insurance policy.”

The little girl looked confused.

“I don't understand.”

Adrian's expression softened for the first time.

“You're not supposed to.”

Elena crouched beside Sofia.

“Where is your mother?”

The girl pointed toward the back of the room.

“There.”

Elena turned.

A woman lay unconscious on the floor.

She recognized her immediately.

Evelyn.

Blood stained her white blouse.

Cassian rushed to her.

“Grandmother.”

Evelyn opened her eyes.

“Get the girl out.”

Cassian looked at her.

“What happened?”

“Richard.”

Evelyn coughed.

“He found the vault.”

Above them, Blackwood Manor was burning.

Fire climbed the western wing.

Smoke poured through shattered windows.

Federal agents fought armed men in the courtyard.

And at the center of the chaos stood Richard Thorne.

He watched the mansion burn.

His mansion.

His empire.

His life's work.

Marcus approached him.

“You're insane.”

Richard smiled.

“No.”

He looked at the flames.

“I'm finally free.”

Marcus raised his weapon.

“You killed your own men.”

“They were liabilities.”

“You burned your own house.”

“It's only a building.”

“You've destroyed everything.”

Richard looked at him.

“Everything?”

He smiled.

“Not everything.”

He pointed toward the ground.

“She's still beneath us.”

In the vault, Elena helped Evelyn stand.

“You knew about Sofia.”

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Richard would have killed her.”

“Who is she?”

Evelyn looked at Adrian.

“His daughter.”

Elena froze.

“Adrian has a daughter?”

Adrian's jaw tightened.

“She isn't my daughter.”

Sofia looked at him.

“You said you were my daddy.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

Elena stared.

“Then what is the truth?”

Adrian looked at Sofia.

“I was ordered to protect her.”

“By Richard?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Adrian's expression hardened.

“Because she carries something Richard needs.”

Elena looked at the child.

“What?”

Adrian answered:

“Your blood.”

Elena went silent.

Sofia looked at her.

“Grandfather said I was special.”

Elena slowly approached.

She knelt.

“Do you know why?”

Sofia shook her head.

“No.”

Elena smiled gently.

“Neither did I.”

Sofia reached toward her.

“Are you my family?”

Elena hesitated.

Then she nodded.

“Yes.”

Sofia smiled.

“Good.”

The simple word broke something inside Elena.

After years of being alone, she suddenly had a family she had never known existed.

A twin.

A niece.

A mother.

A father.

And a criminal empire trying to destroy them all.

Cassian approached Adrian.

“You're coming with us.”

Adrian shook his head.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because Richard will follow me.”

“He's already following us.”

Adrian looked toward the vault entrance.

“He wants the girl.”

Cassian frowned.

“Why?”

Adrian's eyes darkened.

“Because Sofia is the last surviving blood relative capable of opening the original Thorne vault.”

Cassian froze.

“What?”

Adrian looked at him.

“Your grandfather spent decades searching for someone with the correct bloodline.”

“My bloodline?”

“No.”

Adrian looked at Elena.

“Hers.”

Then Sofia.

“And hers.”

Elena stared.

“You said Sofia carries my blood.”

Adrian nodded.

“She's your biological daughter.”

Elena's face went completely white.

“No.”

Adrian's expression didn't change.

“Richard took her from you six years ago.”

Elena couldn't breathe.

“I've never had a child.”

“You did.”

“That's impossible.”

Adrian shook his head.

“You were unconscious after the extraction.”

Viktor stepped forward.

“No.”

Adrian looked at him.

“You knew.”

Viktor closed his eyes.

“I suspected.”

Elena turned toward her father.

“You knew?”

“I didn't know she survived.”

Sofia looked at Elena.

“Mommy?”

Elena stared at her.

The word echoed through the room.

Then everything inside her broke.

She pulled the child into her arms.

Sofia hugged her immediately.

“I knew you'd come back.”

Elena cried into her hair.

“I didn't know I had to.”

A deep explosion shook the vault.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Cassian grabbed Elena.

“We're leaving.”

“No.”

She looked toward the archive.

“What?”

“We can't leave the evidence.”

Cassian stared.

“It's not worth dying for.”

“It isn't evidence.”

She pointed toward the servers.

“It's everyone's identity.”

Cassian understood.

“The politicians.”

“The judges.”

“The police.”

“Everyone.”

Elena nodded.

“If Richard destroys this, he survives.”

Cassian looked at the burning monitors.

“What do you want to do?”

Elena stared at the system.

Then she smiled.

“We burn it.”

Cassian frowned.

“You just said we can't destroy it.”

“Not all of it.”

She began typing.

“We're going to release it.”

Adrian stared at her.

“You can't.”

“Why?”

“You'll bring down governments.”

“Good.”

“You'll expose innocent people.”

“Then we separate them.”

“You don't have enough time.”

Elena looked at him.

“I don't need time.”

She pointed toward the system.

“I need one connection.”

Cassian understood.

“The federal network.”

“Yes.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“They'll shut you down.”

“Not if we send it through every channel at once.”

Alexander stepped toward the console.

“I can help.”

Elena looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because my entire life has been built around destroying this.”

He paused.

“Now I want to help you finish it.”

Above them, Richard entered the main archive.

He found the system already activating.

His face changed.

“No.”

The screens turned white.

Then black.

Then hundreds of encrypted files began transmitting.

Richard rushed toward the console.

“Stop!”

Nothing responded.

He smashed the monitor.

Another activated.

Then another.

Across the world, encrypted files began appearing on government servers.

Financial records.

Photographs.

Audio recordings.

Bank transfers.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

Orders.

Everything.

Richard's empire was no longer a secret.

It was becoming public.

Inside the vault, Elena watched the upload percentage.

32%.

“Faster.”

Alexander worked beside her.

47%.

Cassian guarded the door.

Evelyn held a pistol despite her injuries.

61%.

Sofia sat beneath the desk, clutching the stuffed rabbit.

74%.

Suddenly the system flashed red.

EXTERNAL ACCESS DETECTED.

Elena frowned.

“Richard.”

“No.”

Alexander stared.

“This isn't Richard.”

“Then who?”

The system displayed:

THORNE PRIME ACCESS.

Cassian went pale.

“What is that?”

Evelyn whispered:

“The original owner.”

Elena looked at her.

“Who?”

Evelyn stared at Cassian.

“Your great-grandfather.”

Cassian froze.

“He's dead.”

“Yes.”

“Then how is he accessing the system?”

Evelyn's voice trembled.

“Because he isn't dead.”

The upload stopped.

ERROR.

Elena stared.

“No.”

Alexander tried to override it.

Nothing.

Cassian looked toward Evelyn.

“You knew.”

“I suspected.”

“Who is the original owner?”

Evelyn hesitated.

Then said:

“Jonathan Thorne.”

Cassian's face went pale.

“My great-grandfather died thirty years ago.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“He disappeared thirty years ago.”

Elena looked at the screen.

“Where is he?”

Evelyn answered:

“Russia.”

Silence.

Then a new message appeared.

HELLO, ELENA.

Her blood went cold.

Another line appeared.

I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR YOU.

Cassian looked at her.

“Don't answer.”

A third message appeared.

YOUR MOTHER KNOWS WHO I AM.

Elena turned toward Anya.

Her mother had gone completely pale.

“Mom?”

Anya whispered:

“He found us.”

“Who?”

Anya looked toward the screen.

“Your grandfather.”

Richard suddenly laughed.

Everyone looked toward the monitor.

His face appeared again.

But he wasn't alone.

An older man stood behind him.

Silver hair.

Sharp eyes.

A scar across his cheek.

Cassian stared.

Richard stepped aside.

“Meet the man who built the empire.”

The older man looked directly at Elena.

Then at Sofia.

Then Cassian.

He smiled.

“My family.”

Cassian raised his weapon.

“You're Jonathan.”

Jonathan smiled.

“Yes.”

“You're behind all of this.”

“No.”

He looked toward Richard.

“Richard is.”

Richard's face changed.

Jonathan continued.

“He was always too ambitious.”

Richard stared at him.

“You said I was your heir.”

“You were.”

“Then why?”

“Because you forgot the first rule.”

Richard's jaw tightened.

“What rule?”

Jonathan smiled.

“An empire belongs to whoever survives.”

Richard suddenly realized what was happening.

Jonathan had never intended to save him.

He had used Richard to rebuild Black Winter.

And now he was taking it back.

Richard turned toward the door.

Jonathan's voice stopped him.

“Where are you going?”

Richard turned.

“I won't let you.”

Jonathan smiled.

“You already lost.”

The screen went black.

A gunshot echoed.

Then silence.

Inside the vault, Elena stared at the blank monitor.

“What happened?”

Evelyn didn't answer.

Cassian did.

“Richard is dead.”

Elena looked at him.

“How do you know?”

Cassian's expression was grim.

“Because Jonathan just took control.”

The system rebooted.

The upload resumed.

89%.

Alexander looked at Elena.

“Now.”

She nodded.

Together, they pushed the final sequence.

100%.

Every file transmitted.

Every secret.

Every name.

Every crime.

Black Winter was exposed.

The empire was finished.

But Elena knew this wasn't the end.

It was only the beginning.

Because on the final screen appeared one last message.

YOU HAVE DESTROYED MY EMPIRE.

NOW I WILL DESTROY YOUR FAMILY.

Elena stared.

Then another message appeared.

COME TO MOSCOW.

COME ALONE.

OR SOFIA DIES.

Elena's blood ran cold.

She pulled Sofia closer.

Cassian stepped forward.

“No.”

Elena looked at him.

“I have to go.”

“You're not going alone.”

“The message said alone.”

“I don't care.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“Neither do I.”

Alexander nodded.

“I'm coming.”

Evelyn sighed.

“So am I.”

Elena looked at all of them.

For the first time, she wasn't alone.

She had spent years believing survival meant disappearing.

Now she understood something different.

Survival could also mean standing together.

She looked at the burning manor through the underground camera.

The house that had once represented fear was now collapsing.

Cassian reached for her hand.

“Let it burn.”

Elena looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because we don't need it anymore.”

She nodded.

Above them, Blackwood Manor burned to its foundation.

Richard's empire was gone.

But somewhere across the ocean, the man who had built it was waiting.

And he had one thing Elena had never expected.

A secret about her birth.

A secret about Sofia.

And a secret about Cassian that could tear the family apart before they ever reached Moscow.

The war was no longer about Black Winter.

May you like

It was about blood.

And Jonathan Thorne had just declared war on his own family.
