Chapter 7 — The Father’s Secret

Chapter 7 — The Father’s Secret

The road to the Thorne family cemetery was supposed to take forty minutes.

It took two hours.

Cassian refused to use the main roads.

Dante drove the first vehicle while Cassian sat beside Elena in the second.

Viktor and Anya followed behind them.

No one trusted the silence.

Every turn could have been monitored.

Every abandoned road could have been a trap.

And beneath Elena's coat, the small black pendant felt heavier with every mile.

She finally broke the silence.

“My father said the archive is beneath the cemetery.”

Cassian nodded.

“Yes.”

“You believe him?”

“I believe he knows something.”

“That isn't the same thing.”

“No.”

She looked through the window.

“You don't trust my father.”

“I don't trust anyone who spent nineteen years hiding from his own daughter.”

Elena looked at him.

“Fair.”

Cassian glanced at her.

“But you trust me?”

She smiled faintly.

“I haven't decided.”

“Good.”

She turned back toward the darkness.

“Neither have I.”

The cemetery appeared just before dawn.

It sat behind an enormous iron gate, surrounded by ancient oak trees and stone walls.

The Thorne family mausoleum stood at the center.

Cassian stared at it.

“I've never been here at night.”

Elena looked at him.

“Why?”

“My father wouldn't allow it.”

Viktor's voice came through the radio.

“Because he knew what was underneath.”

Cassian turned.

“Get out of the car.”

Viktor approached.

“You don't understand what you're about to find.”

Cassian's expression hardened.

“Then explain it.”

Viktor looked toward the mausoleum.

“Your grandfather didn't build Black Winter.”

Cassian frowned.

“You said he did.”

“I said he controlled it.”

“What did he build?”

Viktor hesitated.

“A contingency.”

“For what?”

“If Black Winter ever collapsed.”

Elena stepped closer.

“And what's inside?”

Viktor looked at her.

“Everything.”

They entered the cemetery.

The fog was thick.

Gravestones emerged like silhouettes.

Elena walked beside Cassian.

Viktor and Anya followed.

Dante remained near the gate.

Suddenly, Elena stopped.

Cassian turned.

“What?”

She pointed.

A gravestone.

MICHAEL THORNE.

Cassian stared.

“My grandfather.”

Elena looked at the date.

Twenty-seven years ago.

Cassian shook his head.

“This isn't possible.”

Viktor said:

“It's not his grave.”

Cassian turned.

“What?”

“Richard Thorne never died here.”

“Then whose grave is this?”

Viktor's answer was quiet.

“A man who agreed to disappear.”

Cassian looked at him.

“Who?”

“His brother.”

Silence.

Cassian's expression changed.

“My grandfather had a brother?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't I know?”

“Because Richard erased him.”

They reached the mausoleum.

Cassian placed his hand against the stone door.

It opened.

Inside stood six coffins.

Five were marked.

The sixth had no name.

Cassian looked at Viktor.

“That one?”

Viktor nodded.

“Open it.”

Cassian stared.

“Why?”

“Because the entrance is beneath it.”

Cassian and Dante moved the stone coffin aside.

A metal hatch appeared underneath.

Cassian entered a code.

Nothing happened.

Elena looked at the pendant.

“Try this.”

Cassian inserted it.

The lock clicked.

The hatch opened.

Cold air rose from below.

A staircase descended into darkness.

Cassian looked at Elena.

“Stay behind me.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

He almost smiled.

“I knew you'd say that.”

The stairs went down much farther than expected.

Thirty steps.

Then fifty.

Then eighty.

The walls changed from stone to reinforced steel.

Lights activated automatically as they descended.

At the bottom was a massive metal door.

A black triangle had been engraved into it.

Elena touched the symbol.

The door opened.

The archive was enormous.

Rows of shelves.

Computers.

Documents.

Photographs.

Hard drives.

Boxes.

And walls covered with names.

Cassian stared.

“This is impossible.”

Viktor nodded.

“This is the heart of Black Winter.”

Elena walked toward the wall.

Thousands of names were listed.

Politicians.

Judges.

Business leaders.

Military officers.

Bankers.

Criminals.

She recognized several names from international headlines.

People who had publicly spent decades fighting organized crime.

They were all connected.

Cassian walked deeper.

Then stopped.

A photograph was pinned to the wall.

His father.

Beside him stood Viktor.

And Richard.

But there was something written beneath it.

FOUNDERS.

Cassian's face changed.

“My father was a founder.”

Viktor said:

“Yes.”

Cassian turned.

“You lied to me.”

“No.”

“You said he tried to destroy it.”

“He did.”

“After helping build it.”

“Yes.”

Cassian looked sick.

“How?”

Viktor's voice was quiet.

“He believed he could control it.”

Elena looked at Cassian.

“And he couldn't.”

“No.”

Viktor pointed toward another photograph.

A younger Richard.

Standing beside a group of men.

One of them was Elena's father.

Another was Adrian Vale.

Another was Cassian's father.

“This was before Black Winter became what it is now.”

Cassian stared.

“What changed?”

Viktor answered:

“Richard.”

Elena found another folder.

It was labeled:

ROSTOV — FAMILY FILE

She opened it.

Inside was a photograph of her as a child.

Then another.

Then another.

Someone had monitored her entire childhood.

School.

Medical records.

Friends.

Travel.

Every detail.

Elena's hands shook.

“He watched me.”

Viktor nodded.

“For years.”

“Why?”

“Because of what your father hid.”

“What?”

Viktor looked at Cassian.

“Not a key.”

Cassian frowned.

“What did he hide?”

Viktor didn't answer.

Elena slammed the folder onto the table.

“You owe me the truth.”

Viktor looked at her.

“You're right.”

He took a breath.

“Your father discovered something inside Black Winter.”

“What?”

“The identity of the person who truly controlled it.”

Elena stared.

“Richard?”

Viktor shook his head.

“Richard was only the public face.”

Cassian stepped forward.

“Then who?”

Viktor looked at Elena.

“A woman.”

Silence.

“Who?”

“Your grandmother.”

Cassian froze.

“My grandmother?”

Viktor nodded.

“Richard's wife.”

Cassian's face went pale.

“She died before I was born.”

“No.”

Viktor looked toward the archive.

“She disappeared.”

Elena stared.

“So my entire family…”

“Was built on false deaths.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because the people behind Black Winter understood one thing.”

Viktor paused.

“Dead people cannot be questioned.”

Cassian moved deeper into the archive.

He found another section.

THORNE FAMILY — PERSONAL FILES

He opened the first folder.

His father's diary.

Cassian hesitated.

Then began reading.

The first pages were ordinary.

Business.

Family.

Finance.

Then the entries became darker.

I was wrong.

Richard has gone too far.

The organization is no longer controllable.

They have begun targeting Elena Rostov.

Cassian stopped.

He read faster.

Viktor believes his daughter possesses the archive key.

He is wrong.

Cassian's breathing changed.

Elena noticed.

“What?”

He handed her the diary.

She read.

Her face went pale.

The next entry:

The key isn't in Elena.

Another:

The key is in me.

Elena looked at Cassian.

“What does that mean?”

Cassian didn't answer.

He turned the page.

If I die, Cassian must never know the truth.

His hands began shaking.

The next line was almost unreadable.

My son is the final safeguard.

Cassian stopped.

“What?”

Elena stared at him.

“What does it say?”

Cassian couldn't speak.

Viktor took the diary.

His face changed.

He whispered:

“Oh God.”

Elena looked between them.

“What?”

Viktor looked at Cassian.

“Your father didn't leave you out of Black Winter.”

Cassian stared.

“He built it into you.”

A sound echoed through the archive.

Footsteps.

Everyone froze.

Dante raised his weapon.

“Someone's here.”

Cassian looked toward the entrance.

The lights flickered.

Then a voice came through the speakers.

“Hello, Cassian.”

Cassian froze.

His father's voice.

Dead for four years.

Elena looked at him.

The recording continued.

“If you're hearing this, you've found the archive.”

Cassian stepped closer to the speaker.

“Dad?”

The voice continued.

“I knew one day you'd come here.”

Cassian's eyes filled.

“I wish I could have told you the truth.”

Elena whispered:

“What truth?”

The recording answered.

“Your grandfather didn't create Black Winter.”

A pause.

“He inherited it.”

Cassian's expression hardened.

“And I…”

Another pause.

“…tried to destroy it.”

The lights came on.

A hidden screen activated.

Cassian's father appeared.

He looked directly into the camera.

“I failed.”

Cassian whispered:

“Why?”

His father's recorded voice answered.

“Because the organization had already infiltrated our family.”

The screen changed.

A family tree appeared.

Names connected by lines.

Richard.

Cassian's father.

Cassian.

Then another name.

A woman.

EVELYN THORNE.

Cassian's grandmother.

The screen highlighted her.

CURRENT CONTROLLER.

Cassian stared.

“She was alive.”

His father's recording continued.

“She is still alive.”

Elena looked at Viktor.

“You knew.”

Viktor nodded.

“I suspected.”

The recording continued.

“She is the person you must fear.”

Cassian stepped toward the screen.

“Where is she?”

His father's voice became quieter.

“She knows you're coming.”

The screen went black.

Then a final message appeared.

SHE IS ALREADY INSIDE YOUR HOUSE.

Cassian froze.

Dante's radio crackled.

A guard's voice.

“Sir?”

Cassian grabbed the radio.

“What?”

“Someone has entered Blackwood Manor.”

“Who?”

The guard hesitated.

Then:

“An elderly woman.”

Cassian's blood went cold.

“Description.”

“White hair.”

“Anything else?”

“She says her name is Evelyn Thorne.”

Cassian stared at Elena.

His grandmother was inside his home.

The woman who had supposedly died before he was born.

The woman who controlled Black Winter.

The woman his father had spent his life trying to stop.

And she had chosen the exact moment Cassian left the manor to walk straight into it.

Cassian turned toward the stairs.

“We're going back.”

Viktor grabbed his arm.

“No.”

Cassian pulled free.

“My grandmother is inside.”

“That's why you can't go.”

“She has my people.”

“She wants you there.”

Cassian looked at Elena.

“And if she has Elena's mother?”

Anya stepped forward.

“She doesn't.”

Cassian looked at her.

“How do you know?”

“Because Evelyn has never cared about me.”

Anya's expression darkened.

“She cares about one person.”

“Who?”

“Her grandson.”

Cassian stared.

“Me?”

Anya nodded.

“She wants you to inherit Black Winter.”

Cassian's face hardened.

“I don't want it.”

Anya looked at him.

“She doesn't care.”

They hurried back toward the surface.

But before they reached the stairs, every light shut off.

A voice echoed through the archive.

Evelyn.

“Cassian.”

He stopped.

“Grandmother.”

Her voice sounded strangely calm.

“You finally found your father's secrets.”

Cassian looked around.

“Where are you?”

“Where I've always been.”

He raised his weapon.

“You're not taking anything from me.”

She laughed softly.

“My dear boy…”

A pause.

“…I already did.”

The lights returned.

A screen appeared.

Cassian's face went pale.

It showed Blackwood Manor.

Then the camera moved through the house.

Past the guards.

Past the corridors.

Into Cassian's private office.

A woman stood behind his desk.

White hair.

Elegant black dress.

Evelyn Thorne.

She looked directly into the camera.

Then smiled.

Beside her stood Marcus.

And Dante.

Both had weapons pointed at each other.

Cassian's breathing stopped.

Evelyn spoke.

“Come home.”

The screen went black.

Cassian looked at Elena.

“We're going.”

Viktor shook his head.

“You're walking into her trap.”

Cassian loaded his weapon.

“Yes.”

Elena looked at him.

“Why?”

Cassian stared toward the stairs.

“Because she's holding my family.”

Elena stepped beside him.

“Then she's holding mine too.”

Cassian looked at her.

For a moment, they said nothing.

Then they started climbing.

Neither realized that the moment they returned to Blackwood Manor would change everything.

Because Evelyn Thorne had not simply taken control of the house.

She had opened the final chapter of Black Winter.

And the secret Cassian's father had buried for decades was about to be revealed.

Cassian wasn't merely the heir to an empire.

He was the final piece of the empire.

May you like

And Evelyn intended to make him rule it.

Whether he wanted to or not.
