Chapter 11 — The Secret They Buried

Chapter 11 — The Secret They Buried

For seven seconds, nobody spoke.

The underground chamber was completely silent.

Then every monitor in the vault flickered at once.

NEW OWNER CONFIRMED.

ELENA ROSTOV.

Cassian stared at the words.

“No.”

Elena slowly turned toward him.

“What?”

“You can't own this.”

“I didn't ask to.”

“Then undo it.”

“I can't.”

Cassian stepped closer.

“Try.”

Elena looked at the console.

The interface had already changed.

Every account.

Every property.

Every encrypted archive.

Every secret holding company connected to Black Winter had been transferred.

Not destroyed.

Transferred.

To her.

She swallowed.

“This wasn't supposed to happen.”

Viktor looked at her.

“It was always supposed to happen.”

Elena turned.

“What?”

Her father looked exhausted.

“Your mother designed it this way.”

Elena stared.

“My mother?”

Viktor nodded.

“She knew one day Richard would try to take control.”

“So she made me the owner?”

“No.”

He paused.

“She made you the end.”

A scream echoed through the speakers.

Richard.

“You think you've won?”

Elena looked up.

Richard's face appeared on the central monitor.

His composure was gone.

“You have no idea what you've activated.”

Elena stared at him.

“Tell me.”

“You've opened the burial chamber.”

Cassian frowned.

“What burial chamber?”

Richard laughed.

“The secret your parents spent twenty years hiding.”

Viktor's face went pale.

“No.”

Richard smiled.

“Yes.”

Elena looked at her father.

“What is he talking about?”

Viktor didn't answer.

Richard leaned toward the camera.

“Ask your father what happened on October seventeenth.”

Elena froze.

The date from the recording.

The night Black Winter changed.

Richard continued.

“Ask him who died.”

Viktor finally whispered:

“Your mother.”

Elena's breath caught.

“I knew she died.”

“No.”

Viktor shook his head.

“You knew she was declared dead.”

Elena stared.

“What are you saying?”

Viktor's voice broke.

“Your mother didn't die that night.”

The room seemed to tilt.

Elena gripped the edge of the console.

“My mother is alive?”

Viktor closed his eyes.

“She was.”

“When?”

“Four years.”

Elena stared.

“Four years?”

“She survived the explosion.”

“Then where is she?”

Viktor looked toward the vault.

“Below us.”

Elena turned.

A second door had appeared behind the main archive.

It hadn't been there before.

Or perhaps she had simply never noticed it.

The door opened.

Cold air spilled into the chamber.

A narrow staircase descended into darkness.

Cassian looked at Viktor.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“And you left her down there?”

“I had no choice.”

Elena turned on him.

“You always say that.”

Viktor looked at his daughter.

“This time it's true.”

Elena descended.

Cassian followed.

Alexander came behind him.

Viktor remained above.

The staircase seemed endless.

At the bottom was a steel corridor.

No guards.

No cameras.

No alarms.

Just silence.

Then Elena saw a door.

A small nameplate was attached to it.

A. ROSTOV

Her mother's initials.

Elena's hand trembled.

She reached for the handle.

Cassian touched her shoulder.

“You don't have to do this alone.”

She nodded.

Together, they opened the door.

Inside was a hospital room.

An old bed.

Medical equipment.

A chair.

And a woman sitting beside the window.

Her hair was almost completely white.

She turned.

Elena stopped breathing.

“Mom?”

The woman stared at her.

For several seconds, she didn't move.

Then she whispered:

“Elena?”

Elena collapsed to her knees.

“Mom.”

Anya covered her mouth.

Tears filled her eyes.

“My little girl.”

Elena rushed forward.

They held each other.

Five years of grief.

Twenty years of lies.

All of it broke at once.

“You're alive.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you come for me?”

Anya cried.

“I tried.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“They wouldn't let me.”

“Who?”

Anya looked at Cassian.

Then Alexander.

Then toward the ceiling.

“Everyone.”

Anya slowly explained.

After the explosion, she had been badly injured.

Richard found her first.

He wanted the master code.

She refused.

So he kept her alive.

Not as a prisoner.

As insurance.

“He knew Elena would eventually return.”

Cassian asked:

“Why?”

Anya looked at him.

“Because of what happened before the explosion.”

“What happened?”

Anya's expression became haunted.

“Your father discovered Richard's real plan.”

Cassian frowned.

“What plan?”

“To create a permanent criminal dynasty.”

Alexander laughed bitterly.

“He succeeded.”

“No.”

Anya shook her head.

“He failed.”

She looked at Elena.

“Because Elena was never meant to inherit the empire.”

She pointed toward Cassian.

“She was meant to destroy it.”

Elena stared.

“Why me?”

Anya took her hand.

“Because you were the only person Richard couldn't predict.”

“But he knew about me.”

“He knew about the child.”

Anya paused.

“He never understood the woman.”

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

“What did you put inside the system?”

“The truth.”

“What truth?”

Anya looked toward the archive.

“Every crime.”

“Every payment.”

“Every politician.”

“Every judge.”

“Every police officer.”

“Every company.”

“Every murder.”

Elena's expression changed.

“The entire Black Winter network.”

“Yes.”

“And the vault?”

“Contains something more important.”

“What?”

Anya whispered:

“The names of everyone Richard blackmailed.”

Cassian understood.

“Politicians.”

“Judges.”

“Law enforcement.”

“Corporate executives.”

Anya nodded.

“People who could destroy Black Winter.”

“Or protect it.”

“Yes.”

Alexander stepped forward.

“And Richard has those names too.”

Anya looked at him.

“No.”

“What?”

“Richard doesn't.”

She smiled sadly.

“That's why he has been terrified of this vault for twenty years.”

Suddenly the lights went out.

Cassian immediately drew his weapon.

“Stay behind me.”

A gunshot cracked.

Then another.

Anya screamed.

Elena dropped behind the bed.

Alexander fired toward the doorway.

“Who's there?”

A shadow moved.

Cassian fired.

The figure disappeared.

Marcus's voice came through the radio.

“Cassian!”

“What?”

“We've got a problem.”

“What?”

“The manor is surrounded.”

Cassian looked at Elena.

“By who?”

Marcus hesitated.

“Federal agents.”

Silence.

Then another voice came over the radio.

“Cassian Thorne.”

A man's voice.

Cold.

Official.

“You are surrounded.”

Cassian frowned.

“Who are you?”

“Special Agent Daniel Mercer.”

“We have no warrant.”

“You have bigger problems.”

“What?”

“You've been named in an international criminal indictment.”

Cassian stared.

“What?”

Mercer continued.

“The evidence was delivered to us six hours ago.”

“By whom?”

A pause.

“Your grandmother.”

Cassian looked at Elena.

Evelyn.

Back in the control room, Evelyn stood beside the window.

Federal vehicles surrounded Blackwood Manor.

She watched them arrive.

Marcus entered.

“You did this.”

Evelyn didn't turn.

“Yes.”

“You handed Cassian over?”

“No.”

“Then what are you doing?”

“Buying time.”

Marcus frowned.

“For what?”

Evelyn looked at the manor.

“For Elena.”

Richard watched the federal convoy from another room.

His smile returned.

“You see?”

He turned toward the man standing beside him.

“Everything is collapsing.”

The man nodded.

“Then we move.”

Richard looked at him.

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Because Elena has opened the vault.”

“And?”

Richard smiled.

“Now we can finally take what we've been waiting for.”

Inside the underground chamber, Elena found a second recording.

The label read:

FOR ELENA — WHEN THE VAULT OPENS.

She pressed play.

Her mother's voice filled the room.

“If you're hearing this, my daughter, then I am no longer there to protect you.”

Elena closed her eyes.

Anya continued.

“I need you to know something.”

“You were never abandoned.”

“Every time you thought your father had forgotten you, he was protecting you.”

“Every time you thought I was dead, I was fighting to return.”

“And every time Richard tried to find you, someone stood between you and him.”

Elena looked at Viktor.

He lowered his head.

Anya's voice trembled.

“But there is one truth I never told you.”

The recording paused.

“The night you were born…”

Elena's heart stopped.

“…you weren't the only child.”

Silence.

Cassian looked at her.

“What?”

Anya continued.

“You had a twin brother.”

Elena stared at the recorder.

“No.”

“He was taken before we could escape.”

Alexander's face changed.

“What?”

Anya continued.

“Richard told us he died.”

Viktor stepped forward.

“He wasn't dead.”

Elena looked at him.

“You knew?”

Viktor's voice broke.

“I found out years later.”

“Where is he?”

Anya answered through the recording.

“He was raised by Richard.”

Elena's blood ran cold.

“His name…”

The recording crackled.

“…was Adrian.”

Alexander suddenly stepped backward.

Cassian stared at him.

“No.”

Alexander shook his head.

“That's impossible.”

Elena looked at him.

“Why?”

Alexander's face had gone white.

“Because Adrian Vale wasn't my brother.”

He looked at the screen.

“He was yours.”

The room fell silent.

Elena could barely breathe.

The man who had attacked Blackwood.

The man who had manipulated the war.

The man everyone had called Adrian Vale.

Her twin brother.

Raised by Richard.

Trained to destroy everything she loved.

Cassian looked at Alexander.

“You knew?”

Alexander shook his head.

“I didn't.”

Then the monitor activated.

A face appeared.

Adrian.

His eyes were cold.

But beneath the cruelty was something strangely familiar.

He looked directly into the camera.

“Elena.”

She stepped closer.

“Adrian.”

He smiled.

“Finally.”

“Why?”

“Because now you know.”

“Know what?”

He leaned toward the screen.

“Richard didn't raise me to destroy Black Winter.”

Elena frowned.

“Then why?”

Adrian's smile disappeared.

“He raised me to destroy you.”

Silence.

Cassian stepped forward.

“You're not touching her.”

Adrian laughed.

“You still don't understand, Cassian.”

“Then explain.”

Adrian looked at Elena.

“She is not the key.”

He paused.

“I am.”

The screen went black.

Then the entire manor shook.

A massive explosion erupted above them.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Anya screamed.

Cassian grabbed Elena.

“Stay down!”

Another explosion.

Then gunfire.

Marcus shouted over the radio.

“They've breached the eastern gate!”

Evelyn's voice followed.

“Cassian, get Elena out!”

Cassian looked toward the staircase.

“Which way?”

Evelyn answered:

“North tunnel.”

Viktor shook his head.

“No.”

Cassian looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because that's where Richard wants them to go.”

Elena stared at the map.

She suddenly understood.

“The trap.”

Everyone looked at her.

“Richard isn't attacking the manor.”

She pointed toward the underground map.

“He's forcing us toward the second archive.”

Viktor nodded.

“Exactly.”

Elena looked at Cassian.

“He wants me to open it.”

“And then?”

She stared at the screen.

“Then Adrian gets access.”

Alexander suddenly understood.

“That's why he needed Elena.”

“He needs both of us.”

Elena whispered.

“The twins.”

Above them, the manor doors exploded inward.

Federal agents rushed through.

Gunfire erupted.

Evelyn walked calmly into the center of the chaos.

She raised both hands.

“I surrender.”

The agents surrounded her.

One officer asked:

“Where is Cassian Thorne?”

Evelyn smiled.

“You're asking the wrong question.”

“What question should we ask?”

She looked toward the floor.

“Where is Elena Rostov?”

Deep beneath Blackwood Manor, Elena stood before the second vault.

The door was enormous.

Older than the manor itself.

Two handprints were carved into the steel.

One for her.

One for Adrian.

Cassian looked at her.

“You don't have to open it.”

Elena stared at the door.

“If I don't, this never ends.”

Alexander shook his head.

“If you open it, you may unleash something worse.”

Elena looked at him.

“Worse than this?”

He had no answer.

She placed her palm against the first imprint.

The system activated.

IDENTITY CONFIRMED.

Then another message appeared.

SECOND BLOODLINE REQUIRED.

Elena closed her eyes.

Somewhere above them, explosions continued.

Somewhere in the darkness, Adrian was waiting.

And somewhere between the buried secrets of two families lay the truth that had been hidden for twenty years.

Elena whispered:

“Adrian.”

The lights flickered.

A voice answered from the other side of the vault.

“I knew you'd come.”

Elena's eyes widened.

The steel door began to open.

And for the first time in twenty years, the Rostov twins were about to stand face-to-face.

But Elena didn't know that Adrian wasn't the only person waiting behind that door.

There was someone else.

Someone who had been buried beneath Blackwood Manor since the night Black Winter was born.

Someone whose identity would destroy everything Elena thought she knew about her family.

The vault opened.

And a child's voice whispered from the darkness:

“Mommy?”

Elena stopped breathing.

May you like

Because she recognized the voice.

It was hers.
