Chapter 10 — The Betrayal Inside the Family

THE EMPIRE SHE TOOK BACK
Chapter 10 — The Betrayal Inside the Family
The hardest betrayal was never the one that came from an enemy.
Enemies were easy.
You expected them to hurt you.
You expected them to lie.
You expected them to take everything they could reach.
But family?
Family was different.
Family was where you placed the things you could not protect yourself.
Your childhood.
Your memories.
Your trust.
Your heart.
And that was why Isabella Castle felt something she had not felt since Marcus walked away.
Not anger.
Not fear.
Disappointment.
Because the person standing in front of her was the one person she believed would never become a threat.
Her father.
Richard Castle sat alone in the library.
The same room where he had taught Isabella how to read financial reports.
The same room where he had explained the importance of patience.
The same room where he told her:
“Never let emotion control your decisions.”
Now he sat surrounded by the consequences of his own.
Isabella stood across from him.
Waiting.
For an explanation.
For a reason.
For anything that could make the pain easier to understand.
“Tell me everything.”
Her voice was quiet.
Richard looked at her.
And for the first time in her life…
She saw fear in her father’s eyes.
“I made a mistake twenty years ago.”
Isabella said nothing.
Richard continued.
“Before Castle Hospitality became what it is today, there were investors.”
“I know.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“You know the official story.”
A pause.
“You don’t know what happened.”
Richard walked to the old cabinet near the fireplace.
He removed a small wooden box.
Isabella watched.
Inside were documents.
Photographs.
Letters.
Pieces of a past she had never been allowed to see.
“I thought I was protecting you.”
“That’s what everyone says before they admit they hurt someone.”
The words surprised him.
Because they were not angry.
They were tired.
Richard opened the first document.
“Adrian Cross was my closest friend.”
Isabella frowned.
“Friend?”
“Yes.”
Not enemy.
Not rival.
Friend.
The word changed everything.
“He helped me build Castle Hospitality.”
She looked at the photograph.
Young Richard.
Young Adrian.
Standing together.
Smiling.
“Then what happened?”
Richard looked away.
“I chose the company over him.”
The truth began slowly.
That was always how painful truths arrived.
Not as explosions.
As pieces.
Richard and Adrian had built the foundation of Castle Hospitality together.
Adrian was brilliant.
Ambitious.
Fearless.
But he wanted something Richard refused to give.
Complete control.
“He believed the company belonged to whoever had the vision to create it.”
Richard said.
“And I believed it belonged to whoever could protect it.”
Isabella understood.
Two men.
Two beliefs.
One empire.
“Then why did you hide him?”
Richard’s expression changed.
“Because he crossed a line.”
“What line?”
Richard hesitated.
And Isabella immediately noticed.
The hesitation.
The same hesitation she had seen when people lied.
“What did he do?”
Richard sat down.
“He tried to remove me.”
“Legally?”
A pause.
“No.”
The answer was heavier.
“He tried to destroy me.”
Isabella looked at the documents.
The lawsuits.
The accusations.
The leaked information.
The beginning of the war.
Suddenly everything connected.
Adrian was not attacking randomly.
He was finishing something that started years ago.
“But why now?”
Richard looked at her.
“Because Marcus gave him an opening.”
Isabella froze.
“Marcus?”
“Yes.”
Richard sighed.
“Adrian knew Marcus was vulnerable.”
“Because of me.”
“No.”
Richard looked at her.
“Because of himself.”
That sentence stayed with her.
Because everyone kept saying the same thing.
Marcus was a victim.
Marcus was betrayed.
Marcus lost everything.
But the truth was more complicated.
Marcus made choices.
Again and again.
Meanwhile, Marcus was discovering his own version of the truth.
The folder Adrian gave him contained a document he could not stop reading.
It was an agreement from fifteen years earlier.
A private agreement between Richard Castle and Isabella.
Before Marcus ever entered her life.
The title:
SUCCESSION AND PROTECTION PLAN
Marcus stared.
“Why would she need protection?”
Adrian smiled.
“Because Richard knew.”
“Knew what?”
“That someone would eventually try to use her.”
Marcus looked at the signature.
Isabella.
She had signed it at twenty-two.
Before marriage.
Before him.
Before everything.
“She knew.”
Adrian nodded.
“She always knew power was dangerous.”
Marcus felt something strange.
Not victory.
Not satisfaction.
Something closer to shame.
Because he had spent months telling himself Isabella manipulated him.
But the truth was:
Isabella had spent her entire life preparing to survive people like him.
“Why are you showing me this?”
Marcus looked at Adrian.
The question mattered.
Because Adrian never gave anything freely.
Adrian smiled.
“Because you and I have something in common.”
“What?”
“We both thought Isabella belonged to us.”
Marcus became still.
“And?”
Adrian’s smile disappeared.
“We were both wrong.”
Back at the Castle estate, Isabella continued reading the documents.
Then she found the final page.
A letter.
Written by her father.
Never sent.
Never delivered.
Addressed to her.
She looked at him.
“You wrote this?”
Richard nodded.
“Years ago.”
“Why didn’t you give it to me?”
“Because I was afraid.”
Again.
That word.
Fear.
Her father.
The strongest man she knew.
Afraid.
She opened the letter.
The first sentence broke her heart.
Isabella, if you ever learn the truth, it means I failed to protect you.
She stopped.
Then continued.
I spent my life believing protection meant controlling every danger before it reached you.
But I forgot something your mother always understood.
People cannot be protected from life.
They can only be prepared for it.
By the time she finished, tears filled her eyes.
Not because she forgave him.
Not yet.
But because she finally understood.
Her father had not hidden the truth because he did not trust her.
He hid it because he loved her.
And sometimes…
Love made people do terrible things.
“I’m angry.”
Richard nodded.
“You should be.”
“I don’t know if I can forgive you.”
“I understand.”
“But…”
She stopped.
Because the next words were difficult.
“But I don’t want to lose you.”
Richard looked down.
And for the first time in years, Isabella saw not a billionaire.
Not a founder.
Not the head of Castle Hospitality.
Just her father.
An old man who had spent his entire life fighting battles.
Then her phone rang.
Her assistant.
She answered.
“Isabella.”
The voice was urgent.
“What happened?”
“There’s a problem.”
“What kind?”
A pause.
“The media has obtained another document.”
Her heart tightened.
“What document?”
The assistant hesitated.
Then:
“Your marriage agreement with Marcus.”
Silence.
Richard looked at her.
“What?”
Isabella closed her eyes.
Because she knew.
That document contained personal information.
Information Marcus should never have shared.
“How bad is it?”
Her assistant’s voice lowered.
“Bad.”
“Tell me.”
A pause.
“They’re saying you manipulated Marcus from the beginning.”
Isabella felt the old pain return.
Not because she believed it.
Because she knew what was coming.
The world would not care about the truth first.
It would care about the story.
Across the city, Marcus watched the news.
His face was on every screen.
But this time…
So was Isabella’s.
The headlines were brutal.
DID ISABELLA CASTLE BUILD HER EMPIRE BY CONTROLLING HER HUSBAND?
Sophia watched beside him.
“Is this what you wanted?”
Marcus did not answer.
Because for the first time…
He was not sure.
He wanted revenge.
He wanted to prove Isabella was not perfect.
He wanted the world to see she had secrets.
But he never wanted to see her destroyed.
Not really.
The phone rang.
Adrian.
Marcus answered.
“Congratulations.”
Marcus’s voice was cold.
“You leaked the marriage agreement.”
“Yes.”
“You said we would expose the truth.”
“We did.”
Marcus looked at the screen.
At Isabella’s face.
At the woman he once loved.
“No.”
Adrian smiled.
“You’re starting to understand.”
“What?”
“This was never about proving Isabella was wrong.”
A pause.
“It was about making everyone stop believing she was right.”
Marcus looked at the city.
And suddenly he realized.
He had not joined a war against Isabella.
He had joined a war against the person who wanted to destroy her.
And Adrian Cross had never cared who won.
May you like
Only who suffered.
