Chapter 4 — The Mistress Who Wanted Everything

THE EMPIRE SHE TOOK BACK

Chapter 4 — The Mistress Who Wanted Everything

Sophia Laurent had always believed she was smarter than other women.

That was her greatest strength.

And eventually…

It became her greatest weakness.

She believed wives were weak because they tolerated too much.

She believed loyalty was just another word for fear.

She believed love was something people used when they had nothing else to offer.

And when she looked at Isabella Castle, she saw everything she thought was wrong with powerful women.

Quiet.

Patient.

Elegant.

Controlled.

Sophia mistook silence for weakness.

She made that mistake because she had never understood something important.

A woman who chooses not to fight is not always powerless.

Sometimes…

She is simply waiting for the right moment.

For years, Sophia studied Marcus Vale.

Not casually.

Not romantically.

Strategically.

She knew the restaurants he visited.

The people he wanted to impress.

The investors he feared.

The executives who secretly disliked him.

She knew which compliments worked.

Which questions made him feel important.

Which insecurities he tried to hide.

Sophia did not fall in love with Marcus.

She studied him.

And Marcus loved being studied.

Because he confused attention with affection.

The first time Marcus met Sophia, he was already unhappy.

That was what made him easy.

Successful men rarely fall because someone offers them something new.

They fall because someone makes them believe they deserve more.

Sophia knew exactly what to say.

“You’re wasted here.”

“You’re smarter than these people.”

“Your wife doesn’t appreciate you.”

“You built everything.”

Every sentence fed the version of Marcus he wanted to believe.

The version where he was a genius surrounded by people who failed to recognize him.

But now that version was collapsing.

And Sophia was starting to panic.

Because the man she thought she was winning…

Was becoming useless.

“You’re not doing enough.”

Marcus looked up from the documents on his desk.

“What?”

Sophia stood near the window.

“You’re just sitting here.”

He stared at her.

“I’m handling things.”

“No.”

Her voice sharpened.

“You’re waiting.”

Marcus leaned back.

“You think I’m afraid?”

Sophia turned.

“I think Isabella knows something you don’t.”

That sentence bothered him.

Because he had already been thinking the same thing.

“What are you saying?”

Sophia walked closer.

“I’m saying she didn’t just take the hotel.”

Marcus watched her carefully.

“She took your confidence.”

The truth irritated him because it was accurate.

Marcus hated that Isabella could still affect him.

Even after everything.

Even after he left her.

Even after Sophia convinced him he was finally free.

He still compared everything to Isabella.

The way she handled problems.

The way she spoke.

The way she never needed to prove herself.

Sophia noticed.

And it made her angry.

“You need to stop thinking about her.”

Marcus looked at her.

“I’m trying.”

“No.”

Sophia smiled coldly.

“You’re still married to her in your head.”

The words landed.

Because somewhere deep inside, Marcus knew.

Sophia had expected a reward.

That was the arrangement she created in her mind.

Marcus would leave Isabella.

He would become CEO.

They would appear together.

She would become the woman beside the most powerful hotel executive in the city.

She imagined magazine covers.

Luxury apartments.

Designer clothes.

Invitations.

Respect.

She did not want to be a mistress.

She wanted to be the woman everyone envied.

But now?

Now she was standing beside a man who had lost everything.

And Sophia did not like losing.

Three days after Marcus was removed from Castle Hospitality, Sophia made her first move.

She contacted investors.

Not Marcus.

Not his lawyers.

Investors.

She arranged private meetings.

She presented herself as someone who understood the future.

A businesswoman.

A partner.

A woman with vision.

The problem?

Nobody cared.

Because Sophia had made the same mistake Marcus made.

She confused being close to power with having power.

One investor finally told her the truth.

“You are asking us to trust a woman whose only connection to this company was an affair with a former executive.”

Sophia’s smile disappeared.

“That’s not fair.”

The investor looked at her.

“Business rarely is.”

That night, she returned to the penthouse furious.

Marcus was drinking.

“You’re useless.”

He looked at her.

The old Marcus would have exploded.

The new Marcus just stared.

“What did you say?”

Sophia immediately regretted the tone.

But not the meaning.

“I’m saying we need a better plan.”

Marcus laughed quietly.

“Interesting.”

“What?”

“You used to tell me I was the smartest man you knew.”

Sophia looked away.

“And now?”

“Now I’m a problem you need solved.”

Silence.

Because he had finally seen her.

Sophia softened her voice.

“Marcus.”

But something had changed.

He no longer heard comfort.

He heard calculation.

“I need you to understand something.”

She waited.

“I lost my company.”

A pause.

“My reputation.”

Another pause.

“My marriage.”

He looked at her.

“But you lost nothing.”

Sophia frowned.

“What?”

“You walked into my life after everything was built.”

The words shocked her.

Because they sounded exactly like the accusations Isabella could have made.

“You think I used you?”

Marcus did not answer.

And that answer was worse.

Sophia left the room.

But she did not cry.

She was not that kind of woman.

She did not break.

She adapted.

And adaptation was dangerous.

The next morning, Sophia met someone from Marcus’s past.

Someone Marcus thought he could trust.

Someone who knew secrets about Castle Hospitality.

And someone who hated Isabella Castle.

The meeting happened in a quiet restaurant outside the city.

The man arrived wearing an expensive suit and carrying a thin folder.

Sophia looked at him.

“You said you had information.”

He placed the folder on the table.

“I do.”

“What kind?”

The man smiled.

“The kind that can destroy Isabella.”

Sophia opened the folder.

Inside were old documents.

Financial records.

Contracts.

Names.

Her expression slowly changed.

Because she realized something.

Marcus was not the only person who had underestimated Isabella.

Everyone had.

“What do you want?”

The man smiled.

“Nothing complicated.”

He leaned forward.

“I want Castle Hospitality to fall.”

Sophia studied him.

“And if it does?”

“Then everyone loses.”

She closed the folder.

“And you’re okay with that?”

The man laughed.

“Some people would rather destroy the kingdom than admit they were never the king.”

Sophia understood that sentence.

Because it described Marcus.

And maybe…

It described her too.

That night, Sophia returned to Marcus.

But she did not tell him everything.

Not yet.

She needed him.

But only temporarily.

Because Sophia Laurent had learned something important.

Marcus Vale was no longer useful as a husband.

But he could still be useful as a weapon.

Meanwhile, across the city, Isabella sat in her office reviewing reports.

Her assistant entered.

“Ms. Castle.”

“Yes?”

“There’s something you should know.”

Isabella looked up.

“What?”

“Sophia Laurent has started contacting investors.”

Isabella sighed.

Not surprised.

Disappointed.

“Of course.”

Her assistant hesitated.

“She may have help.”

That made Isabella pause.

“Who?”

The assistant placed a file on the desk.

A name was written on top.

Isabella read it.

And for the first time in days…

Her expression changed.

Because she knew that name.

She knew exactly what kind of danger it represented.

“Get me everything about him.”

Her assistant nodded.

“Who is he?”

Isabella looked out at the city.

A city full of people who wanted her empire.

People who thought power was something they could steal.

“He is the reason Marcus was never the biggest threat.”

Because Marcus wanted revenge.

Sophia wanted everything.

But the person behind them…

May you like

Wanted destruction.
