Chapter 13 — The Fall of Marcus Vale

THE EMPIRE SHE TOOK BACK

Chapter 13 — The Fall of Marcus Vale

The world had a strange way of rewarding people for pretending.

For years, Marcus Vale had been rewarded for confidence.

Not kindness.

Not loyalty.

Not honesty.

Confidence.

He walked into rooms believing he belonged there, and people believed him because he never looked uncertain.

That was the secret of powerful men.

They did not always have more ability.

Sometimes they simply had more courage to pretend.

But pretending had a weakness.

Eventually…

Reality arrived.

Three days after the press conference, Marcus woke up to silence.

Not peace.

Silence.

The kind that came before destruction.

His phone, once filled with messages from executives, investors, and people wanting his attention, showed only missed calls.

His former assistants stopped answering.

The people who once surrounded him were suddenly unavailable.

Marcus knew what that meant.

He had seen it happen to others.

Power disappeared quickly.

And when it did…

So did loyalty.

The first headline appeared at 6:00 a.m.

FORMER CASTLE EXECUTIVE MARCUS VALE FACES FINANCIAL INVESTIGATION

He stared at the screen.

Then another appeared.

QUESTIONS RAISED OVER VALE’S PRIVATE BUSINESS DEALINGS

Then another.

INVESTORS DEMAND ANSWERS

Marcus threw the phone onto the table.

“No.”

But the word sounded weak.

Because deep down, he knew.

This was not random.

This was the consequence he had avoided.

Sophia arrived an hour later.

She looked different.

Less confident.

More nervous.

Marcus noticed immediately.

“What happened?”

She placed a folder on the table.

“You need to see this.”

He opened it.

And his face changed.

Inside were records.

Financial transfers.

Private communications.

Contracts.

Everything.

His own actions.

His own decisions.

His own mistakes.

“This is impossible.”

Sophia looked at him.

“No.”

Her voice was quiet.

“This is what happens when someone stops protecting you.”

The sentence hurt.

Because it was true.

For years, Isabella had cleaned up his mistakes.

Handled problems before he knew they existed.

Protected his image.

Protected his career.

And he had mistaken protection for control.

“What did I do?”

Sophia looked away.

“You want the list?”

Marcus said nothing.

She opened the folder.

“You approved deals without proper review.”

A page.

“You ignored compliance warnings.”

Another.

“You transferred company resources to projects that benefited your personal network.”

Another.

“You used your position because you believed you deserved it.”

Marcus sat down.

Because for the first time, he saw himself clearly.

Not as a victim.

Not as a betrayed husband.

Not as a misunderstood businessman.

Just a man who had been given something valuable…

And wasted it.

The investigation moved faster than anyone expected.

The board released a statement.

Castle Hospitality had completed an internal review.

Marcus Vale was no longer considered a partner.

No longer considered a representative.

No longer connected to the company.

The world watched.

The man who once stood beside Isabella Castle as an equal was now standing alone.

But Marcus’s biggest loss was not the company.

It was something he only realized after everything was gone.

Nobody called to ask if he was okay.

Nobody visited.

Nobody defended him.

Nobody fought for him.

Except Isabella.

She arrived at his apartment that evening.

Marcus looked surprised.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

She looked around.

At the empty room.

At the man who used to believe he could never fall.

“Because someone should.”

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“After everything I did?”

Isabella was silent.

That silence hurt more than anger.

“I destroyed you.”

“Yes.”

He looked down.

“I tried to destroy you.”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“Why are you here?”

Isabella answered honestly.

“Because I don’t want revenge.”

Marcus looked at her.

“Then what do you want?”

“I want you to understand.”

“Understand what?”

“That losing everything doesn’t make you worthless.”

Marcus almost laughed.

Almost.

Because those were the exact words he needed years ago.

But he was too proud to hear them.

“You hate me.”

Isabella shook her head.

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because hate means I still carry you.”

The words broke something.

Not dramatically.

Quietly.

The way real pain worked.

Marcus looked away.

“I loved you.”

Isabella’s expression softened.

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“Because I loved you too.”

The room became silent.

Not the painful silence from before.

Something different.

A goodbye.

“But love wasn’t enough.”

Marcus closed his eyes.

“I know.”

Before she left, Isabella placed something on the table.

A letter.

“What is that?”

“A recommendation.”

He looked confused.

“For what?”

“A job.”

Marcus stared.

“You’re helping me?”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I’m giving you a chance.”

He looked at the letter.

“What’s the difference?”

“Help means I save you.”

She looked at him.

“A chance means you save yourself.”

Then she walked away.

Meanwhile, Adrian Cross watched Marcus’s downfall from a distance.

But he was not satisfied.

Because Marcus falling was never the goal.

It was only a distraction.

His assistant entered.

“Everything is ready.”

Adrian nodded.

“Good.”

“The Castle family will be exposed tomorrow.”

Adrian smiled.

“No.”

A pause.

“They will expose themselves.”

The assistant looked confused.

“How?”

Adrian placed an old photograph on the desk.

The same photograph Isabella had received.

Richard.

Eleanor.

Adrian.

Together.

“You don’t destroy a family by attacking it.”

He tapped the picture.

“You destroy it by making them reveal what they buried.”

The next morning, Isabella received a message.

A video file.

No explanation.

No sender.

She opened it.

And immediately froze.

The video showed her mother.

Eleanor Castle.

Alive.

Healthy.

Standing in an old office.

Talking to someone.

Someone whose face was hidden.

But whose voice Isabella recognized.

Her father.

Then Eleanor said:

“Richard, if anything happens to me, promise me one thing.”

A pause.

“Tell Isabella the truth.”

The video ended.

Isabella stood motionless.

Because she knew one thing.

Her father had lied.

Not about business.

Not about Marcus.

About her mother.

And somewhere in the city…

Adrian Cross smiled.

Because Marcus Vale had fallen.

But the real collapse…

May you like

Had just begun.
