Chapter 8 — The Hidden Contract

THE EMPIRE SHE TOOK BACK

Chapter 8 — The Hidden Contract

The document was only three pages long.

That was what frightened Marcus the most.

The biggest secrets in the world rarely needed hundreds of pages.

They lived in small places.

A signature.

A date.

A sentence nobody noticed.

A clause buried beneath ordinary words.

Marcus Vale had spent his entire life believing power was obvious.

A title.

A position.

A name on a building.

But as he sat alone in the dark, holding the old contract that had belonged to Eleanor Castle, he finally understood something.

Real power was hidden.

And the person who controlled the hidden things…

Controlled everything.

Marcus read the first page again.

Then again.

His eyes moved slowly across the faded ink.

CONFIDENTIAL FAMILY PROTECTION AGREEMENT

The title alone made his hands tighten.

Family.

Protection.

Agreement.

Three words Isabella had never mentioned.

Three words that suggested the Castle family had been preparing for something long before he entered their lives.

The letter from Eleanor remained beside the contract.

The handwriting was delicate.

Almost peaceful.

Which made the words more terrifying.

Marcus,

If this reaches you, then either you have become the person Isabella believed you could be…

or you have become the person I feared you would become.

Marcus stopped.

A cold feeling moved through him.

Because Eleanor Castle had known.

Not everything.

Not the future.

But enough.

He continued reading.

My daughter sees the best in people. That is her greatest gift and her greatest danger.

She believes love can transform ambition into loyalty.

Sometimes it can.

But sometimes ambition simply learns how to wear the face of love.

Marcus slowly lowered the paper.

The words felt personal.

Too personal.

The contract explained something he had never known.

Years before Isabella met him, Richard and Eleanor Castle had created a private agreement.

Not for business.

For Isabella.

A protection system.

A safety net.

If anyone ever attempted to use Isabella’s name, inheritance, or position for personal gain, the agreement would activate.

Marcus laughed quietly.

A bitter sound.

Because he suddenly understood.

He had never entered Isabella’s world as an equal.

He had entered a world that was already prepared to survive him.

The final page contained the clause.

The one that changed everything.

Marcus read it.

And froze.

In the event of betrayal by a spouse or appointed partner, all concealed assets connected to Castle Hospitality shall be transferred to Isabella Castle immediately.

Below it:

Approved by Richard Castle.

Witnessed by Eleanor Castle.

And one more signature.

A signature that made Marcus’s stomach drop.

Marcus Vale.

“No.”

The word escaped.

Impossible.

He had signed it.

But he had never understood it.

The memory returned.

Ten years earlier.

A young Marcus sitting in Richard Castle’s office.

A mountain of documents.

Richard explaining:

“Standard protection agreements.”

Marcus barely listening.

Because he was too focused on winning approval.

Too focused on becoming important.

Too focused on Isabella smiling at him.

He signed.

And forgot.

That was the part that destroyed him.

Not that Isabella had protected herself.

Not that Richard had prepared.

But that Marcus had been given every opportunity to understand.

And he chose not to.

His phone rang.

Sophia.

He ignored it.

It rang again.

He answered.

“What?”

Her voice immediately changed.

“Something happened.”

Marcus looked at the contract.

“What?”

“The media is asking questions.”

“About what?”

“About the board meeting.”

He closed his eyes.

“Already?”

“Yes.”

Sophia lowered her voice.

“And someone leaked information.”

Marcus frowned.

“What information?”

A pause.

“Your name.”

Marcus stood.

“Who leaked it?”

Sophia hesitated.

That hesitation told him enough.

“You don’t know?”

“I have a theory.”

“Who?”

She did not answer.

“Tell me.”

Finally:

“Someone from your old executive team.”

Marcus became still.

Not because he was surprised.

Because he knew exactly who.

Betrayal had a pattern.

People who betrayed once…

Often betrayed again.

Meanwhile, Isabella sat in her office reviewing the same contract.

But unlike Marcus, she had known about it for years.

She had just never known how much her parents had sacrificed to create it.

Her assistant placed a cup of tea beside her.

“You haven’t slept.”

Isabella smiled faintly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

“Because it’s true.”

She looked at the contract.

“I found something.”

“What?”

“My mother knew.”

The assistant waited.

“She knew someone would eventually try to use me.”

A pause.

“She knew I would let them.”

The assistant looked concerned.

“Do you think Marcus knew about the contract?”

Isabella was quiet.

“Yes.”

“Really?”

“He signed it.”

The assistant looked shocked.

“He knew?”

“No.”

Isabella closed the folder.

“He knew he signed something.”

A pause.

“But he never cared enough to know what.”

That was the thing that hurt the most.

Not the affair.

Not Sophia.

Not the betrayal.

The carelessness.

Marcus had never truly listened.

Not when she spoke.

Not when she warned him.

Not when she needed him.

Then Isabella’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

“Hello?”

A man’s voice.

“Isabella Castle.”

She recognized it immediately.

Her expression changed.

“Adrian.”

Her assistant looked up.

Because she had never heard Isabella say that name.

Not once.

Adrian Cross.

A name buried in Castle family history.

A man Richard Castle had warned her never to trust.

A man who disappeared fifteen years earlier after a failed attempt to take control of Castle Hospitality.

“What do you want?”

Adrian laughed softly.

“Still direct.”

“I asked what you want.”

“I want to talk.”

“About?”

“The contract.”

Silence.

Isabella’s hand tightened around the phone.

“How do you know about that?”

“Because I helped create it.”

Her blood ran cold.

“That’s impossible.”

“No.”

His voice became darker.

“It’s the truth.”

Across the city, Marcus listened to another voice.

The same voice.

The same person.

Adrian Cross.

“You promised me information.”

Marcus stared at the contract.

“And you promised me revenge.”

Adrian smiled.

“Then perhaps we should work together.”

Marcus hesitated.

“Why?”

“Because we both want the same thing.”

“What?”

A pause.

“To destroy Isabella Castle.”

The same enemy had approached both sides.

And neither Marcus nor Isabella knew why.

That night, Isabella returned home early.

For the first time in weeks, she allowed herself to sit quietly.

Then she found something waiting at her door.

An envelope.

No name.

No address.

Inside was one photograph.

Her mother.

Her father.

A younger Richard Castle.

And standing beside them…

Adrian Cross.

On the back of the photograph were six words.

Words that changed everything.

Your father betrayed us first.

Isabella stared at the message.

Because suddenly, the enemy was no longer outside the family.

The enemy was connected to the beginning of everything.

And somewhere in the city…

Marcus Vale smiled.

Because he believed he finally had the truth.

But he did not understand.

The truth was not a weapon.

Truth was a storm.

And when it arrived…

May you like

Everyone would get hurt.
